Tonight we're going to be in Ephesians chapter 2, starting in verse 13. But now in Christ Jesus, you who were once far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made both one and has broken down the middle wall of separation. See, I used to be over here, but because of Christ, it wasn't me walking towards, it was by Christ breaking down the wall. His name is Jesus Christ, and he holds on to me. I just have to allow him to hold on to me. If I don't fight and kick and fuss, he holds on to me. And it makes me have his peace. And we just have to rely in the work and trust in him who has finished the work. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Well, we're gonna be um we're gonna be shifting gears here just a little bit. We've been um on serving leadership for the last several weeks. And now we're gonna shift on something back to something else. Um something I'm titling Garden Theology. And so if you want to get your Bibles ready, we're gonna be primarily in Genesis chapter 2. Um, but before we before we jump into that, I I uh I felt prompted from Holy Spirit to read something that I wrote. Um about a ram that I have, his name is Bosephus. And it's important for what we're gonna be talking about from now until I leave to go out of the country. Um, and then whenever I leave to go out of the country, you are gonna be shifting on Wednesday nights to walking through the book of ice. And so I just want to read this to you and then we'll dive in. A few weeks ago I started paying attention to the ram in my backyard. I don't really know what started it. Maybe I just slowed down enough to notice him. Most mornings, if I get outside before my phone starts demanding my attention and before the day begins telling me who it needs who it needs me to be, I find him somewhere out in the pasture. He's almost always doing the same thing. Eating, walking, stopping, looking, breathing. But one morning I stood out there longer than I normally would, and he wasn't eating. His head was lifted into the wind, and he stood there so still that for a moment I wondered, what is he looking at? Then I realized I don't think he was looking. I think he was receiving. The breeze moved through his hair, the grass bent beneath his feet, the morning was waking up around him. He wasn't trying to possess any of it, he wasn't trying to improve it, he wasn't trying to hurry it along. He simply stood there as though everything he needed for that moment had already been provided. That thought had f has followed me for weeks. Not because I learned something about a ram, because I think I saw something about myself. I've become incredibly good at moving through life without ever really receiving it. I move from one responsibility to the next, one meeting to another, one prayer to another, one sermon to another. Sometimes I wonder if I'm actually living in the moment or simply passing through it on my way to the next one. The strange thing is, I don't think I've lost my love for God. I think I've lost my awareness. Those aren't the same thing. It's possible to love God deeply while becoming dull to his nearness. That realization unsettles me. Because the more I watched that ram, the more I realize he wasn't anxious about creating in the morning. He was simply alive to it. And somewhere in that field I found myself asking a question, I haven't been able to shake. What if one of the first things humanity lost wasn't merely a place called Eden? What if we lost the ability to receive the word as it was always meant to be received? What if before sin filled humanity with guilt, it filled humanity with distraction? What if before we hid from God, we stopped noticing Him? I know those are big questions. I'm not pretending to have all the answers. I just know they've stayed with me. I've begun wondering if the greatest poverty in our generation isn't that we lack information about God. Maybe we've simply forgotten how to pay attention. The older I get, the more I'm convinced that love is revealed by attention. Whatever captures your attention eventually shapes your heart. Whatever continually holds your gaze quietly forms the person you're becoming. Maybe that's why Scripture speaks so often about fixing our eyes, setting our mind, beholding the glory of the Lord, remaining, abiding, and watching. Maybe attention has always been more spiritual than we realized. Maybe worship begins long before we sing. Maybe it begins with learning to notice. So I find myself standing at that fence and just watching. Sometimes things getting cold in my hands, like coffee or tea, watching a ram breathe, listening to the wind move through the pasture, trying not to rush the moment, trying not to rush God, trying to remember that before I ever ask him to speak, he's already been giving himself away. And I've started wondering. Maybe the journey back to God doesn't begin with learning something I've never heard. Maybe it begins by waking up to what has been true all along. So I wanted to share that. Yeah.

Boseepus is pretty awesome. My wife saw Bosefus in a vision long before we ever met him. She actually drew him out, and we thought it was a dairy cow, but it was a it was a goofy-looking dairy cow. I just thought she couldn't draw. Come to find out she can draw perfectly, it just wasn't a cow, it was a sheep. So that's pretty awesome. That's that'll preach right there. We start drawing pictures in our mind and start thinking we know what it means and all along or wrong until it shows up, and then we realize, man, our perception was off a little bit. And so I want, as I said, I want to start in in Genesis chapter 2. And tonight I really I really want to move through this slowly because even though I only got an hour, I'm I'm not in a hurry. Y'all know how hard that is for me. Because I want to say a lot and get it out there, and I just I just want to use it. I want to just keep going. We could preach for four or five hours just walking through the word. Um but I don't believe God was in a hurry when he gave us Genesis chapter 2. I I've learned a lot over the years. And sometimes the greatest revelations aren't hidden because they're complicated. Sometimes they're hidden because we read too fast. We move too quickly. We've read Genesis our whole lives looking for the fall. We're looking for sin. We're looking for Satan. We're looking for that forbidden fruit. But as I was studying this out, I just begin to think, what if Moses wasn't trying to get us to look at the forbidden tree? What if he wanted us to notice another tree entirely? What if we become fascinated with the one thing God barely talks about? And we've overlooked the thing he put in the very middle of the garden. Because when when we think Genesis 2, especially Genesis 3, we start thinking a lot about sin. We start thinking a lot about the fall. We start thinking a lot about Satan. We start thinking a lot about eating of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. But I don't want, you've heard me say this a lot. We spend so much time being sin conscious that we're not sun conscious. We're so focused on sin when we're supposed to be focused on the sun. And if we're focused on the sun, the lamb that was slain, Jesus Christ, and that was our focus, we wouldn't have to worry about sin.

Because in him there is no darkness.

And what we behold, we become. And if we're beholding light, light will get in us. And light extinguishes the darkness and it cannot comprehend it. It would be a great day if we walked in so much light that sin got confused when it got around us and didn't know what to do with us. But I I want to begin tonight focusing with life, talking about life, because if if we misunderstand life, we'll misunderstand everything else. And I want I want you to be thinking, you know, and don't answer too quickly, you know, because if you're gonna start writing in your journal during this, what is life?

Because it's it's gotta be more than breathing or existing or surviving. It can't be not having a pulse. Like what what is life?

SPEAKER_02 12:11

Because I I believe there there are people whose hearts are beating, but something inside them has died. There's marriages that still exist, but life has disappeared. And there are churches that that still meet every Sunday, but life has grown quiet and sometimes has left the room. You know, I I I know I know me, I've met a lot of Christians that know doctrine, who who know scripture, they know how to pray, they know how to worship, but but somewhere inside, like they just feel dry.

There's no oil.

They they like apparently life is more than just breathing. And Jesus settles the issue because he doesn't say, I came that they might have religion, or I came that they might have better theology, or that they might behave better. I came that they may have life.

So Jesus came to bring life, and if Jesus came to bring life, we better know what life is.

SPEAKER_02 14:02

Because if we don't, because I don't want to spend my life pursuing something Jesus never promised. He promised life and life more abundantly, but what is life? Because if I don't know what life is, I don't know what abundant life is supposed to look like. So now I live with a misconception of what life is, therefore I'll govern abundant life based on my misconception, and it will always fall short.

Let's let's go to Genesis 2 7. That's where I want to start. And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground. And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. And man became a living being.

I want to challenge you. You're walking through life, and you wake up in the morning, and the Holy Spirit's speaking to you. He's speaking to you about the vine. So immediately your heart leaps to John 15. And so you're gonna get there. I've got to get to John 15. I've got to get to John 15. I've got to get to John 15 because he spoke to me about the vine. So I've got to get to John 15. So I need to see about the vine. And then we get to John 15. I am the true vine, and my father is the vine dresser. Yes, the vine, but we miss the father. Because when Holy Spirit directs us, we already think that we know the destination. But he's just trying to get us in the realm of understanding the Father.

And when we read Genesis and we hear garden theology, we immediately start thinking about the garden. We've skipped one of the greatest mysteries in all scripture. Why did God breathe?

SPEAKER_02 17:23

Have you ever thought about it? He spoke stars into existence. He spoke oceans into existence. He spoke fish into existence. He spoke galaxies into existence. Why didn't he speak Adam alive?

He could have done it. Why take the time to bend down? Why take the time to breathe?

See, what you'll find throughout scriptures, you study it, is every miracle reveals something about the one performing it.

So this is a miracle.

He takes dirt, forms it, breathes in it, the breath of life, and Adam becomes a living being. Why bend down? Why come that close? Why breathe that essence? What does this miracle reveal? It reveals a God who is not content to create humanity from a distance.

He draws near. Much closer than he came to the mountains. It's closer than when he created the oceans.

And one of my favorite questions that he asked Job was, Where were you? Where were you? When I told the oceans they could only come this far. And we hear that, we think, oh, he's he's putting Job in his place. He's reminding Job that he's God and Job's not. When all along I think he's reminding Job of exactly who he is and where he exists. Where were you when I told the oceans they could only come this far? I was with you. Because you picked me before the foundation of the earth. I was already on your mind before I was ever created. I believe even in that moment, God is breathing union into existence into the heart of Job. You started pretending and living as if you were far from me, but I've never been far from you. You you became the most righteous man upon the earth.

You feared me and you shunned evil, but you were speaking to me as if I was distant. When I come to remind you that I've always been there. I love to imagine these moments.

If we were there and we were watching God, he's like putting the stars in the sky and he's speaking, and all of a sudden there's all this vast ocean, and then all this land starts to appear, and all this stuff is happening, and then watching he bends down to the dirt and he starts forming something. We're all like, what is he doing?

Why is he playing in the dirt? What's he gonna do next?

SPEAKER_02 22:27

It's like when you when you go to the gospels and and Jesus is about to go into the temple and flip tables and drive out the thieves with the thieves with the whips. He had to fashion that whip. Can you imagine being a disciple watching him fashion this whip together? What's he doing? Because every detail matters. Because, like the God, the God who stretched out the heavens is kneeling before dirt.

And the dirt didn't deserve it.

That's not why he was doing it. It's because love wanted sons and daughters. Love wanted sons and daughters, not slaves, not worms, not those constantly trying to measure up. Church, you gotta understand, before Adam ever reached for God, God was already reaching towards Adam. Adam didn't come into existence because he wanted God. Adam came into existence because God wanted Adam. This is what it means before the foundation of the earth I picked you. He's saying, before you even existed, I desired you. You are birthed from desire.

You exist from desire, and you'll return to desire. Before Genesis 3 ever happens. And you've got to notice that like Adam has everything.

He has lungs and he has eyes and ears and a brain, he has muscles and bones.

He's perfectly formed. Everything's there. God formed man, he's a man.

SPEAKER_02 24:56

Of the dust of the ground.

SPEAKER_01 25:00

And everything's there except life. And I wonder if we've if we've misunderstood humanity. We we spend our lives trying to improve the dust.

SPEAKER_02 25:33

But God knew that dust would never be enough. Because the issue is not that Adam needed better dirt. Right? The parable of the sower, all must be bad soil. We make it all about the dirt.

SPEAKER_01 26:01

The issue was that dirt can't live by itself. That's why the seed was scattered. Because God wanted life in dirt.

SPEAKER_02 26:23

And we we talked about that quite a bit because we we think that like he was like, you know, I gotta make sure it lands in the right dirt, and like he's just throwing a little bit of seed, and the actual the actual breakdown of the Hebrew is that he's actually just throwing it like crazy. Because he knows if he can get enough life around any dirt, that dirt will come alive. And he's not sowing life sparingly. He's sowing it abundantly. It's I was just talking about this at dinner tonight. The man with leprosy comes up to Jesus and he says, if you're willing, you can make me clean. And he says, I'm willing.

And he reaches out his hand and breaks the law. Now the law wasn't wrong.

That law was there to protect them. You cannot touch a man with leprosy. They have to stay ten paces away and stay unclean, unclean, unclean. Don't come inside the city. And all of those things were there to protect from the spread of disease. But the reason the law existed wasn't because God couldn't stop leprosy. The law existed because God couldn't find a way to bridge the gap between him and man. Because he created systems of sacrifices. He gave structure. He gave layout for them to abide within these things because he longed to be with them, but nothing they could do could get enough darkness off of them that darkness couldn't have a hold on them. So when Jesus reaches out and touches the man that has leprosy, he's not afraid of leprosy getting on him because he knows God's about to get on the man. His light was greater than the darkness. And he understood something. This is why every time that Jesus heals someone, every time that he has this encounter, he tells them, make sure you tell no one who did it. And religions at play still in them because they immediately go and disobey.

Intimacy with the Father.

SPEAKER_02 29:32

Because we were designed for this face-to-face encounter with God, not incrementally, not occasionally, but constantly. And he says it is a man. And then he says, Walk as I walk. Former glory meaning face-to-face encounter. John 1, in the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God. The word with means eye to eye, nose to nose, and mouth to mouth. In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God. Father, restore me to the former glory that we knew. Father, restore them to the former glory that they knew. Father, I long that they would be one as you and I are one. This is the longing of Jesus Christ, the Lamb that's going to be slain.

This is what I desire.

I want them to live face to face with you. I want them to never have to live from distance again. And what Jesus tore when he said it was finished, religion put back up as quick as it could. Distance. The need for somebody else to do it for you. That's why Christians have lived vicariously through spiritual leaders most of the church life. When all leaders are in existence, too, is to give you permission to come boldly before the throne of grace.

Without limitation, with full access. Dust can't live independently.

Dust requires God. And before we think that's bad news, you have to remember that God designed it that way. That dependency is not some flaw in creation. Dependency is the glory of creation. I just want to be self-sufficient. I just want to be self-sufficient. You'll never be self-sufficient until you learn to live dependent upon God. Let me figure out what I'm going to do tomorrow. You already messed up. As many as they're led by the Spirit of God, those are the sons of God. That's what qualifies you as a follower of Jesus. If anyone should come after me, they first must deny themselves. Jesus is the first requirement of following me, whom I'm the only one that can lead you into this union and this delight that you've been so separated from, the first thing you have to do is deny yourself. That should tell us something. The number one thing now actually getting between us and the Father is not some veil, but it's ourselves. What if I told you the veil wasn't about you being able to enter into the Holy of Holies, and it wasn't about some temple and some actual veil. It was the fact that you thought you could live independent from God. Because Jesus comes only revealing the Father, not bearing witness of Himself, saying, I don't even exist, because if you've seen me, you saw Him, and I'm only here to show you Him. Paul says it's no longer I who live, but Christ in me. The greatest fulfillment of any believer is not for you to be seen, but for him to be seen through you. To live so dead to self that all they see is Jesus.

But the pride of life won't allow it. The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, won't allow it. But living dependent upon God is glory.

It's the very glory of creation.

Everything God made depends on him.

The trees depend on him. The stars depend, the ocean, all of creation is groaning for the manifestation of sons and daughters. So we could equally take that and say, all of creation is groaning for the leading of the Holy Spirit. Because as many are led by the Spirit of God, those are the sons of God. All of creation is groaning for the manifestation of sons and daughters. How long must I be with you? He's not upset. He's saying, Be led by the Spirit. Be sons and daughters of revelation light.

We don't want people in our family to be sick and die. We don't need more faith. We need more intimacy. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God, but you can't hear if you're not intimate with the one that is the word.

No distance, no separation, no question of what you're doing or what you're saying, because we're so close we can't miss it.

And it's not close, it's not proximity naturally.

Most of us have all experienced first love with an individual. And when that thing hit you, they were all you could think about. Because it was the birth and understanding that first love is this, that he first loved us, that means he never stopped thinking about us. And now we should live in an existent reality to where we can never stop thinking about him. That's why any conversation that doesn't include him is not a conversation worth having.

And you can talk about him without ever saying his name.

Because he's more than his name. Many have relationship with his name, very few have it with his person. Paul says in him we we live and move and have our being. Not because dependency is weakness, but because dependency is reality. God is the only one that has life in himself. Everything else receives. This is why w in in John in John chapter five, as the Father has life in himself.

Twenty-one, five twenty-one.

For as the father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the son gives life to whom he will.

In himself. You can't give what you don't possess.

SPEAKER_02 40:53

No one else can say I have life in myself. You can't give life. Only the Father can give life, and he can do it through you, but you can't do it on your own. Like Adam can't say that. Moses can't say that. Abraham, Abram, David, Peter, Esther, Paul, Elijah, Elijah, Nehemite. None of these guys can say. Only God possesses life in himself.

Everything else receives. But somehow we try to build a life without life.

And somehow we disconnect from life, from being intimate with Yahweh, from being in presence of Him, in pursuit of Him, and we wonder why all that is being produced is things that will not sustain. Because He said, Apart from me, you can do nothing. What he was saying was, no matter what you do, if it's not with me, it'll amount to nothing.

Because glory in heaven will be determined by proximity on earth.

This is not bad news, guys. This is the best news you've ever heard. Because it means you were never designed to carry the weight of being your own source. I feel like I can't keep up. You were never supposed to. You were supposed to yield to the one that would carry you, the one that would lead you, the one that would guide you, the one that would teach you.

Wisdom herself. You can't create your own peace.

SPEAKER_02 43:04

You can't sustain your own joy. You can't even hold your own identity.

Because you were never designed to hold your own world together. That's the burden that only God can carry. And the moment you try, you'll collapse under the weight you were never created to bear.

You read Philippians, it's the most joyful book in the Bible, and Paul's in prison. Where did he find that joy? He didn't. It found him on the road to Damascus. And it got on him and never left. And it carried him through every moment like who who's who's in chains and then asking to go to Caesar why because God loves Caesar and Paul was the the beacon of light to be carrying the light into the chambers of Caesar you don't you don't get to pick where the spirit leads you just get to follow not too many amens on that one because when we hear that we and if we do amen it we start thinking of great things and places we want to go and then you end up on an island getting bit by a snake nobody picked that I don't want to be shipwrecked on an island bit by a snake I bet that hurt and he had joy and and and maybe because we don't want to be led where where the spirit might take us maybe that's why so many people are exhausted because rest doesn't come from you getting what you want rest comes from you living by the Spirit not you trying to be your own source just give me a minute I'll figure it out no you won't no you won't you're going to try that long enough to where you get broken enough that you finally get on your knees and you come to the word of God and you realize the Spirit is the only one holding the truth and in order to have the inheritance of my father's house I need to wake up a son. I need to wake up a daughter and the only way I can do that is to be led by the Spirit of God you know I've never I've never had a meeting like I've never been been in a prayer meeting with the Lord and him come to me and go, all right I'm really worried about your finances All right I know I know I told you to go on this trip but I'm really concerned for your safety I asked you to do something really big but I'm starting to doubt whether or not you can do it. Nobody's ever had those conversations with God because God doesn't think that way God breeds life how do you how do you find out if you're being led by the Spirit or not where you're going should produce life you ever notice something chaotic grabs hold of you and it only leads into more chaos and division but he came to give life and life more abundantly he was saying when you get life it'll multiply into more life abundantly a seed bears fruit of its kind the enemy sowing seed and so is Jesus. How do we know what the difference is life back back to Adam the the the first thing because I just I just think about stuff like I just I just read the word and I linger long enough to think about it. And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living being and I'm like man you know what as soon as he became a living being he felt something and I was thinking about what what was the first thing he felt what like we know the first thing that he heard the voice of God we know the first thing that he saw God creation but the first thing he felt the breath of God he was he was he was so close that a face to face encounter with the goosebumps himself you know every everything in his body just responded to that like we like God barely blows in and we're like whoa my gosh we we feel the presence of Jesus come we feel the power of Holy Spirit and it's like whoa but this is God the Father there in reality and the first thing Adam feels is the breath of God that's just beautiful to me the first sensation humanity ever experienced was the nearness of love not like oh I love you no love himself I don't know how he didn't say and then Adam wept because that's all I could have done. Maybe he hadn't given enough water in his body yet to create tears. I don't know maybe there's no tears in the garden. I don't know it doesn't really show us there's no reference of him ever crying he's getting kicked out of the presence of God telling him all this horrible stuff's gonna happen it's gonna be you're gonna sweat and oh yeah woman it's gonna hurt when you have babies nobody's crying maybe tears didn't exist Adam's Adam's first memory is not fear or failure or shame or rejection his first memory is God father restore me to the former glory that we knew I long that they would be one as you and I are one so the only memory that they have is you not not how rough last month was not not their bank account balance not how they wish they could just get that breakthrough that they've been longing for but that if they would just remember you and only you they would need no breakthrough because you already broke through like I can't I can't imagine Solomon the first time I opened my eyes there's God just staring at me with longing like watching what he breathed into me go to work not not looking at me wondering when I'm gonna mess up when I'm gonna make a mistake when he's gonna have to punish me when he's gonna have to discipline me but just watching love and life do its work Adam wasn't questioning whether he was loved he wasn't comparing himself to to another human being he didn't wake up feeling insecure he he didn't wake up thinking oh I need to pray oh I need to bust out the Bible and read it he doesn't have to ask where God where are you it's the understanding reality that God was trying to re-establish in Job's heart you you started getting distant from me but I never looked away from you There has never been one moment where you existed apart from his presence That's life living from the understanding that when I was but yet a sinner Christ died for me and we've made it about location and it's always been about communion I don't think Adam's greatest gift was the garden I think that Adam's greatest gift was every moment of his existence was sustained by the presence of God the garden the garden wasn't beautiful because trees were there the garden was beautiful because God was there one of my favorite things is Adam walked with God in the cool of the day that means Adam was in the garden and God came to him and when Adam eats of the tree of knowledge and good and evil life still shows up for the walk and it wasn't because God didn't know what they had done he knew it's what will you do with what you've done will you hide it or will you run to the only source that can sustain it life and life more abundant is the fact that you're always invited into his presence we talked about the difference between King Saul and David because Saul made mistakes and David made worse ones Saul ran from God David ran to God it was never about mistakes that you'll make it's about where you run to when they're made because the Father didn't create sin so we would have to be distant from him sin didn't enter into existence because God didn't want us to be with him sin becomes the barrier from which we operate from a distance but sin never actually distanced us from the Father our choices did us choosing to live outside of communion instead of abiding in union Jesus said if you've seen me you've seen the Father the Father Jesus said he discerned the hearts of men and then the father shows up and asks God ask Adam where are you?
