Welcome to a new episode of the Johnny's World Cup Podcast. Podcast. This is your co-host BW. I'm here with Johnny this morning. Johnny's got uh his co-host with him, Natty. Uh she she's gonna give us our pick as well today. Um, but we're recording this a little bit early. It'll it'll probably come out next week before the game. I'm heading down to the beach, and so we're gonna get this one knocked out. Figure there's not a whole lot to talk about here with this game this week, but there's some famous alumni, some things we'll go over. So um, so how are we doing today, Johnny? Doing well, BW.
SPEAKER_00I just dropped uh buddy, my buddy Naddie off at uh Shaggy Hound, give them a little plug. I take her once a week, usually, uh Shaggy Hound. She loves it there. She's always uh that place is so cool because I used to take Bo there back in the day, but he did not like other dogs, really. He didn't get along with other dogs, so I really couldn't take him as much. But Naddie, I took her once a week because she she loves everybody. But they post pictures every day of the dogs, his daycare pretty much for dogs and uh of the dogs playing. And uh so Natty was in the uh medium-sized group for the longest time. And a few times, a few weeks ago, they told me that they bumped up to the large group because she was running circles around all the medium dogs. So she had so much energy. So she's in with the big dogs now, and they'll post pictures of like uh today at daycare or whatever, and you'll see. I mean, they're big dogs in the group, and that is off inside looking over, like, uh, yeah, I don't think I want to mess with that dog right there. But she loves it, has a good time. So I just dropped her off. And uh yeah, uh week one, you know, week zero technically is this weekend while we're recording this, but week one will be next week, and that's when all the the big games start. And uh, you know, we we got uh we talked about this the other day. Uh happy that we're gonna get a little warm-up game, you know, because usually in the past we've known to play teams like Oregon, Oklahoma State opening game and then drop them, and you're already 0-1. So it's good to get a little tune-up game coming in with Louisiana Monroe. Hopefully we can take care of business and and before we head off, because uh, as we talked about, the September stretch is crucial to get wins because October is brutal. So uh, but Louisiana Monroe, BW, you know anything about Louisiana Monroe? Ever been there or anything about it?
SPEAKER_01I I've passed through Monroe. That's that's about all I know about it. I I don't know that I've ever seen the actual school, but I mean you sent me a list of some of the famous alumni that went there. Man, there's there's a pretty uh I mean I'd say the the alumni from a celebrity standpoint may be bigger than Mississippi State.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, uh the only thing I really know about Monroe is I've stopped there a few times driving over to Dallas, and I always have to stop at the Duck Commander. I don't even know if it's still there, but the Duck Dynasty headquarters is in Monroe. Remember that? Right. Yeah. Yeah. Did you ever go there? The Duck Dynasty uh Duck Commander. I never did. No. Okay, it's it I don't know if it's still there or not, but it was uh such a huge store with all member member billion merchandise from from Duck Dynasty, and uh, and they all they all live in Monroe, but uh yeah, I I Googled just to see. I was curious about who the notable alumni's were and uh BW, but yeah, I was I would ask you, but you uh I sent this to you so you you already know it. But I'd say the biggest uh alumni at um Louisiana Louisiana Monroe, Tim McGraw. Who knew Tim McGraw went to went to Louisiana Monroe? No idea, I did not know that. Uh and Laney Wilson. So it's Laney Wilson, too. Yeah. Country singers, yeah. Tim McGraw and Laney Wilson are probably the two most notable. Uh other guys that are on this list, uh Doug Peterson, former NFL head coach, Super Bowl winning coach. Andrew Whitworth, uh he he's uh uh longtime NFL star offense tackle. I think he won, he's retired now. I remember he won the Super Bowl when the Rams won it against uh Burrow and the Bengals a few years ago. And now I remember seeing him because he was he's our age. And when he won it, he had like all great, he had a great beard, long and gray hair. And I'm thinking, gosh, man, he's our age, and he's he's retiring from the NFL after a long career. This is just really weird. Uh yeah, he went to LSU. Stan Humphreys, I remember he was a uh quarterback for the San Diego Chargers when we were we were kids. They played in the Super Bowl in 1994 or five, somewhere around there. Uh Ben Sheets, MLB pitcher, Chuck Finley, MLB, all-star pitcher as well. Bubba Brister, I remember him. He played quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers when we were young. Um, and then Marty Booker, I don't remember him. NFL Pro wide receiver pro bow wide receiver. But then the two other guys that we had mentioned, uh Willie Robertson, CEO of Duck Commander, and the star of Duck Dynasty. So the whole Robertson clan, you remember Bill Robertson, uh Willie. Did you watch Duck Dynasty BW? Oh, yeah, for sure. Okay, Bill Robertson, Willie Robertson, Jace Robertson, um, and Uncle Cy. I can't leave out Uncle Cy and his sweet tea. Uh that was they were a big thing. But and then uh last but not least, friend of the show, we've had him on twice. He's probably holding the record for our longest running uh uh interview because he I remember we were interviewing you had to go to your kids, you had to go to your kids' game, and he was still talking. And I and we couldn't shut him up. That's right. We love it. We were talking Mark's Madness and uh and Jim Nance and everything. Um and uh we couldn't he went on and on. It was a great, great interview. He gave us so much of his time, and uh uh but Tim Brando is it is nationally known as sportscaster, CBS Sports, Fox Sports, a legend in the business. So uh those are pretty much the notable alumni for Louisiana Monroe Warhawks. Uh pretty cool. You think any of them will be there, be at the game in Starfield?
SPEAKER_01Do it now? You think any of them will be at the game?
SPEAKER_00I don't think so. I think uh I know Brando calls football games, he'll be working for Fox Sports. Uh I don't think any of the other ones would be there. However, Laney Wilson, this is wild. Uh at Rick's, you know, uh for those who are not familiar with Starville, Rick's is the local bar in town where we have good music acts come up there. And man, a few years ago, um, you ride by Rick's and on the marquee, it said Laney Wilson and Morgan Wallen performing. Who would have thought? Who would have thought years later, yeah I mean they're country music superstars now. Uh it's pretty wild how places like that, you know, you get you get young people, um, artists coming in to play, and then they blow up. Man, when we were in college, I was uh I was backstage at Riggs. Someone gave me a backstage pass one day, and I was hanging out with this guy talking SEC football, Georgia football specifically, because he was a big Georgia Bulldog fan. And we were talking about SEC football and about Mississippi State and everything. You know who it was, BW?
SPEAKER_01Well, was it Kenny Chesney? Wasn't he there?
SPEAKER_00I wish it would have been Kenny. I love Kenny. He's he's not a Georgia fan, he's a Tennessee volunteer fan. Right, right, right. Oh, look at the biggest thing. The guy I was talking to. Do I know what Luke Luke Bryan? Nope, nope. You're in the realm of country artists, though. He's he's a massive, well-known country music celebrity now. Back in the this was probably in 2004, three, four, five, somewhere around there. It was Jason Aldean. Jason Aldeen. Oh kickback at Rick, just talking to him like like who is this guy? Everybody's like, you know, nobody knew who he was. Big, big guy, big, big time country guy now, country senior, big Georgia Bulldog fan, great guy. But uh it's fun to see that, you know. That's how that's one special thing about growing up and just going to college town and stuff, because you'll get young acts and uh coming in singing, and you never know, they might blow up. So yeah, right. Laney Wilson, alumni of Louisiana Monroe. Played at Riggs with Morgan Wallen of all things. So uh pretty cool, uh, pretty cool deal. But yeah, so as far as the game goes, I mean, Mississippi State is much more superior opponent than Louisiana Monroe. Um, I remember when I was a kid to come into games and and uh I I think I remember Louisiana Monroe playing. I think that back then they were called like north northeast Louisiana or Northwest, would it be West? Yeah, I think that's right. Yeah. Yeah, they changed the name because uh in yeah, they did. They changed the name. It was North Northwest Louisiana, I believe. Um no, I think it was northeast, but and like and then and then our buddy the Darbone, uh Chuck Darbone, friend of the show, friend of us, uh his family is Louisiana Lafayette Ranging Cajun uh alumni, and they were south east, southwestern Louisiana, because uh, you know, the team in Hammond is southeastern Louisiana. So they were all the directional schools, but then they switched up and Louisiana Lafayette, uh southwestern Louisiana became Louisiana Lafayette, which now just became Louisiana, and then North Northweed, Northeast Louisiana became Louisiana Monroe. So uh switch the names, everything. So I remember playing them years ago when they were known as that, um, and and we took care of business then. So I don't think I'm not worried at all about the game. I think it'll be a good game to show out, uh show out to Mario, let him do his thing. But like we said earlier, we don't need to have him if if we're up with a sizable lead in the fourth, we don't need him out there risking getting hurt. Uh because Levy did that with Shapin last year, had him playing when we were playing northern Illinois or Awkward and blowing him out, and they he was at the end of the game. So we need to we need to uh get our guys some reps in and take them out if we got a big lead and play the younger guys. And and uh it's more of a tune-up game to get ready for for Minnesota because that's the first true road test. And um it's just uh like we talked with Anthony the other day, we need to get off to a good start in September because what lies ahead is really, really tough. And if you're start sitting with uh three and one, four-o record going in October, you're sitting good. But if you go, if you if you just win this game, Monroe, Louisiana Monroe, and then drop the others and start off uh one and three. I mean, you're looking at one and seven right in the face. And levy levy's out. I mean, there's no there's no ins-ins or buts. So uh September is crucial. Uh, but getting off to start one and oh, getting back at Davis Wade, opening the game, college football's back. Uh I'd see us rolling, BW. Uh I'm gonna say 42-7. Our defense might let up at the end and might let a touchdown go through maybe our field goal, but I'm I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt. I think our Nat's gonna have the guys ready. Um, and I'm gonna say 42-7. What are you saying?
SPEAKER_01I was gonna say something like that too. 45-10 is what I'm thinking.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I think we put up some points, and I think our defense plays really well. And man, what a what a uh it'll be just a fresh start, man. It'll be get all the fans excited. We don't we don't need this to be a close game. I know uh we we played Louisiana Tech a few years back in the opening game. And it was uh I think you were at that, were you at that game? I think you were at that game. Uh it was one of the first games. I was there, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, in fact, we left because I thought we were about to lose.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. First game, I think it was 21 season. I didn't go because it was uh right after the pandemic. But I remember watching it and I turned it off and I had to turn it back on in the and the car, went for a ride with the bo at the time, and uh and we we won at the end. So it's like we can't have a game like that, BW. We can't have a have a game where it's down to the wire against Louisiana Monroe because we do uh that's not a good time. Bright soon is gonna come. But we need to come in and take care of business and roll on to week two. Uh uh other games in the week, man. The one that I'm really, really excited about is uh is LSU Clemson. Uh that's gonna be, I think, a heck of a game. Yeah. So uh can't wait to see that. Uh I'll be at Death Valley, which you know both stadiums are known as Death Valley, which is the real Death Valley. I believe it's LSU, and that's where they're gonna be playing. And uh Lane Kiffin versus Dabo, what what's your take on LSU Clemson, BW?
SPEAKER_01Man, I I made my picks the other day, and I I had to I had to look at that one for a minute. Um, but I feel like LSU takes it. I think it's gonna be close, but um, I think LSU wins it.
SPEAKER_00I do too. I think LSU wins it. Uh but I can tell you what, man, if LSU drops it, can you imagine all the criticism Lane's gonna get at losing his first game to Dabbo? You know, he's gonna and then and then if he loses to Ole Miss in a few weeks, that'll I mean oh man, that's that'd be bad. But I think LC will take it. But uh it'll be a real good game. And uh just glad college football is back. I'm glad you mentioned that about the picks. I forgot to say it uh in our podcast the other day. We're doing another uh uh Johnny's world 5.0 Pick Em League. Uh we've been doing it for uh five years now, but we switched it. We're always doing on Yahoo. Um tried to do CBS Sports this year, just change the pace of things and see how that that uh that link works. Um so if y'all want to uh get in on the end of the show notes, PW can put the link in and uh sign up. Free to play. We really just do it just as a way to keep up with the games and all that sort of stuff. So I think we have a few people in the standings right now. Uh so get in if you want. Um there, I don't believe there's any week zero games on there. I think he starts in week one, which um which is good. So uh yeah, get in there and see how you do, and best of luck to you, and it'll be a fun way to keep up with the games.
SPEAKER_01That's right. Um, I was I was looking, looks like Ole Miss plays Louisville. I I don't know much about Louisville, but um maybe that's a close game. We'll see.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, uh, I think that's gonna be a close game, BW. Uh I think uh neutral side game too. I believe it's in Nashville. Uh oh it is. Okay. Yeah. Neutral side. So I think there's a big alumni base in uh up old minutes in the Nashville area. But Louisville, I mean, they they probably travel good too. So I would think the stadium would be half and half. Um but uh Louisville's a good good program too. So that's not a that's a tough game for Old Menace in week one, week one of the Pete Golding area. So I mean, it wouldn't surprise me if Louisville comes out on top and wins. Uh kind kind of if they do, kind of like what I said about Lane Kiffin, can you imagine the criticism Pete Golding's gonna get for losing the opening game when the expectations are so high with Trinidad? But I don't think they'll do it. Uh I picked old miss my and when I picked it because I just think Trinidad and Kewan Lacey are the real deal. I think they'll take care of it. But but that is not in a gimme game like we got. So it'll be a fun game to watch.
SPEAKER_01They uh ESPN put out like the top 100 players in college football. I don't know if you saw that list. Um but Trinidad and and Kiwan Lacey were like top five. Yeah. And they it's funny though that the picture they had of Keywan Lacey, he looks like a 10-year-old kid. Um, they need to they need to get a better picture of him up there. That's funny, man. We had uh one of our DBs was in there at like 45, uh surprisingly, he was pretty high up there. Um Kelly Jones. Kelly Kelly Jones. Yeah, and uh we had somebody else on defense that was up there. Um, but then Ole Miss, you know, had some linemen and stuff like that. So they, you know, according to according to that, I think they've they've still got quite a bit of talent, but we'll see.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I think I think uh I think they're gonna be good. But like I said in the preview podcast, I see Ole Miss dropping a few games this year. Um I don't think they're gonna have quite the special season they had last year. But they will be good. Um when you've got two guys that are top five on your team in the offense, the protection should should be there.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Uh I see them having a successful year, but I just don't think they're gonna uh I might you might be we 12 weeks down the road looking back at me saying, What why do you say they weren't gonna make it there in the playoffs? But I just don't see it happening right now because um kind of what we talked about. I think about three SEC teams uh are gonna get in. Um so we'll see, but that's a long way uh from right now when we're recording this. But uh but week one is back, BWB uh football's back, and uh it's awesome, man. We made it. We made it, made it start of college football. So can't wait to see uh to get to get the uh toe hit hit meets leather. And uh the kickoff will be on our way, and we'll be back best time of the year.
SPEAKER_01That's right. And y'all check the show notes uh for that link to the uh CBS Sports Pick'em League. And um don't forget to make your picks like I did last year. I I missed a week and it just set me aback the whole year.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's a cumulative thing. So if you miss a week, you're kind of in trouble. Uh, but it is fun. Just it's just a way to keep up with all the different games going on. And uh yeah, they'll have we'll have some top 25 games in there, SEC games, all sorts of stuff. So it'll be fun to to uh to play along. But yeah, y'all check that out, and the link will be in the show notes, and then we'll be back the next week to talk about the Minnesota Golden Govers. Uh I'm gonna talk to you. I met some friends of mine, BW. You know anybody from Minnesota? Uh I don't know anybody from Minnesota. Uh I met some friends of mine uh in Omaha in 2018 when I went to uh College World Series when we were at the state was playing. Um and I met these people and they take a trip to Omaha every every June. They go to College World Series every year, and they're from Minnesota. Uh they have no ties. Minnesota, I don't even know if they have a baseball team. I don't think they do. Uh, but they go and they love the College World Series. So every year, man, I get a text. I don't hear from them throughout the year, but every year in June, I get a text saying, hey, we're in Omaha, we're looking for Mississippi State. Are in there, are they here this year? Um, we're we're gonna be cheering for them. So uh I'll have to shoot them a text and tell them that Mississippi State is actually coming to their neck of the woods the next week against uh against Minnesota. I think they went to school in Minnesota. But yeah, the Golden Gophers. Uh don't know much about them, but we'll we'll dig into that next week. But uh it'll be uh the first true uh road test. So look forward to that. We gotta get this uh first win down and then and move on from there. But uh yeah, Louisiana Monroe, take care of business and move on, and hopefully we'll be sitting at one and oh next week, BW.
SPEAKER_01That's right. Well, y'all keep listening. Thank you everybody for listening, and uh we'll talk to y'all next week. Sounds good. See you next week. Bye.
