Winning stops being a score and starts being a personal definition you test in real life. We explore the South Star principle, why action creates wisdom, and how rejection can be proof you are moving forward.

We can define the thesis for winning by understanding the antithesis of winning. We often talk about The North Star as guide, but what if we looked at the South Star for wisdom as well?

What Winning Means To Guests

SPEAKER_03

Welcome to a segment of Winning Is. Over the past year, I have taken time to, at the end of every interview, to understand from every guest what winning means to them. It was more of a curiosity quest at first, thinking if this podcast is called Win Today and we are designed to give everybody a tool to equip you to win in some aspect of your life, well, what does winning really mean? And so over the past year, it has been such a fun quest to see what winning means to high performers and thought leaders all over the world. And I have yet to find somebody or meet somebody that has tied winning to some sort of key performance indicator in their life, some sort of dollar figure in their bank account. Oftentimes it's not something that you can quantify. And if you do define winning that way, that is okay.

Meet Jack And The South Star

SPEAKER_03

What I've discovered now is there's no singular definition and no definition that is even remotely the same as you're about to find out here with Jack Wagoner, who I had on the podcast, episode 264. Jack is the host of the Grateful Podcast and also a 19-year-old that is filled with wisdom. This is a kid that you want to bet on, but he is sitting down from the highest performers and thought leaders in the world, and already at 19 just crushing it, and there's so much that we can learn from him. So his response is one of the more unique ones that I've had, in that you'll see here, winning, to define winning, understand what does the opposite of that look like. So what is the antithesis of winning? Hence the South Star principle, which is maybe even why you clicked on this episode. And the only way that you can find out the antithesis of winning is through taking action. One thing that I often talk about on the podcast is that everything that you want is on the other side of the things either that you don't want to do or it's on the other side of rejection. Meaning that winning can be facing the other side of rejection, redirection, if you will. So without spoiling Jack's episode or Jack's segment, I highly recommend going back and checking out his full interview on 264. But if not, then the South Star principle, and one last thing of encouragement, one last thing that has helped me a lot, and a lot of coaches have recommended this as well.

Celebrate No As Progress

SPEAKER_03

When we think about our journey to winning, and however we define it, we'll just say journey to success. Start celebrating the no's that you get along the way because every no is getting you closer to that yes. Every, I don't like the word failure, but I'll say every opportunity created, because if someone says no to me, that just means you gave me a new opportunity. N-O. Every new opportunity created is one step closer towards a win. Every step back that the world might say is a step back because you didn't get that sale, you didn't get that thing, is actually a step forward because it teaches you how to be better. So follow the stealth star principle and check out Jack and win today.

Try And Fail To Define Winning

SPEAKER_01

If someone came to you and asked how can they craft a meaningful relationship definition of what winning means to them.

SPEAKER_02

What would you tell them?

SPEAKER_00

I think that in order to know what winning means to you, you have to try to find it and fail at finding it. So my one of my first jobs was being a catching coach. I'm a baseball I was a base huge baseball player and I was a catcher. Pretty good catcher, especially defensively. And I would teach kids and my first catching coach, my biggest catching mentor, um, he would always tell me that in order to find like the perfect point, I would have to first go too far, then go not far enough. And go too far and go not far enough and continue to find that dynamic place. And so I think that our definitions of winning it's always gonna be dynamic. But if you wanna find out what winning means to you, you have to first try it. You have to say, Hey, for this season, like I wanna see if money is winning to me. It's not gonna be. Money won't be it, but in order to know that, you gotta try. And then you can you can see it's like, oh, is winning like going out in the woods and camping and leaving things behind? And probably not after a long period of time. But I I genuinely think that like wisdom is a combination of information and action, and you have to take action in order to find out like what does a life in which I win actually look like. Before you do that, you gotta say what does a life in which I don't win look like and live that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, sometimes looking at the opposite can give you the answers for what you want.

SPEAKER_01

What's the antithesis of winning?

Cost Of Inaction And Next Steps

SPEAKER_01

Okay, now I can form my thesis for winning.

SPEAKER_00

The South Star principle. We talk about having a North Star. Well, if you find a South Star, just do the exact opposite of whatever that is.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Sometimes I also think things can become more clear or a piece of encouragement for people to take action is to understand and look at what's the cost of inaction. What's the cost of delaying your dreams?

SPEAKER_03

What's the cost of not moving forward because you're scared? There's your inputs right there. And in what there, there's how you create your inputs and so many other things.
