Recently, I’ve seen a run of bad alternators on various vehicles. So, what exactly is an alternator? The alternator is a fan or serpentine belt-driven electric motor that recharges your battery after a start, then maintains the voltage to somewhere around 14 volts while the vehicle is running. Alternators charge but are regulated by a regulator (imagine that) or they would overcharge like crazy.
