Nixon fire leaves Smiley postmaster in critical condition

A woman is in police custody, and a man is in critical condition, following a July 14 fire in Nixon. According to Nixon police Lt. Travis Beck, fire crews responded to a structure fire in the 700 block of E. 4th St. early on July 14. First responders transported a male occupant of the home — Israel Perez, 62, the postmaster in Smiley — to San Antonio Military Medical Center in San Antonio with severe burns, the lieutenant said.
