Was it ironing, or lifting weights?

Ironing the family’s clothes for the first day of school was quite a chore in years past. Imagine using this iron to press the wrinkles from your clothes! This 5-lb. iron had to be heated on the stove before use. If it was too hot, it would scorch the fabric and ruin the item being pressed — from clothing to curtains and more. Later innovations included irons that had a compartment for charcoal or coal, so you didn’t have to heat them on a stove or burner. Then came electric irons that made the job even easier!
