K9 hero Gerben set to retire after cancer diagnosis

Local K9 hero Gerben is preparing for a new chapter in his life — retirement! Gerben, K9 officer for the 81st Judicial District Attorney’s Office, returned home Dec. 11 from a leg amputation, after the discovery of bone-eating cancer on one of his front legs. While no additional cancer was found, District Attorney Audrey Gossett Louis said his diagnosis means he will be retiring on Jan. 16, 2026, complete with a celebration to honor his service to the community.
