Postmark change could impact property-tax payments

A recent change in how the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) applies postmarks could create problems for Texas property taxpayers who mail payments close to the deadline. USPS now applies postmarks in regional mail-sorting facilities in the mail-sorting process, rather than at initial pickup. This means that a payment mailed on time could receive a later postmark date and be treated as late — triggering penalties and interest.
