K9 Officer Gerben sniffs out retirement

Crime-fighting K9 Officer Gerben has officially retired from his services in the 81st Judicial District. Gerben celebrated his retirement Jan. 16, surrounded by a compassionate team of law enforcement, judicial district officials, his life-saving veterinarian care team from Chapparal Vet, and a room full of bright yellow bouncing tennis balls — his favorite toy. The Dutch Shepherd, partnered with Investigator Daniel Kaufman since 2017, was diagnosed in 2025 with a bone-eating cancer in one of his legs.
