Defining the 'Promised Land'

Editor: In Deuteronomy, Moses tells the Israelites that if they remain loyal to God, God will enable them to conquer the Canaanites who already live in the “promised land.” If they fail to obey, they will perish. In this context, God functions as the rallying force behind a military campaign. “Choose life” effectively means to obey God so you can succeed in taking the land, including driving out or killing its current inhabitants. In later centuries, however, religious traditions reframed this language. The church now interprets these passages as a call to conquer moral evils rather than people. The “enemies”...
