Community restores historic Cruse Colony Cemetery

LA VERNIA — Cruse Colony Cemetery, a historic burial ground dating back to the 1800s near La Vernia, has been restored through the dedicated efforts of local families and community volunteers. Located near the junction of C.R. 341 with U.S. 87, the cemetery serves as the final resting place for many African American families from the La Vernia area, including numerous members of Zion Fair Baptist Church. The church is located on C.R. 342 near the cemetery. In recent years, the cemetery fell into disrepair after longtime caretakers became ill or passed away.
