Elmendorf city Councilman George Dziuk Jr. managed to snap photos of this elusive visitor to his property May 5. Roadrunners, known for their swiftness — they’ve been reported to run up to 26 mph — are good hunters, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and are particularly fond of lizards and snakes, even small rattlesnakes. Circling around a snake, a roadrunner will rush in and stab the snake with its beak; repeated blows stun the prey, and then the bird can seize it or slam it against the ground repeatedly, breaking its bones and softening it.
