Elmendorf City Council appoints new mayor, new alderman

Elmendorf has a new mayor and a new alderman, after a series of votes at the May 21 city council meeting. The actions were prompted by the resignation of Mayor Michael Gonzales in April. Alderman Linda Peña Ortiz moved to appoint Alderman Manuel Decena as mayor. Decena, who had opened the meeting as mayor pro tem, seconded the motion. After discussion involving all the aldermen and several members of the public present, a vote was taken. The motion was defeated on a 3-2 vote.
