Editor: The first screwworm case in Texas was discovered and confirmed by the USDA in Zavala County near La Pryor. It was found in the umbilical area of a 3-week-old calf. The screwworm fly lays eggs at the site of an open wound or opening of the flesh, such as the umbilical area of newborn calves or the gumline. This was a serious problem for many years until the eradication project finally declared them gone in 1966. A massive effort involved sterilizing male flies with a radiation process, then air dropping them by the millions over the entire affected areas....
