Israel & Rachel Campbell SOUP Season 2 Episode 6 "Stay Refreshing"
In this episode of the Israel and Rachel Campbell Soup podcast, the hosts dive into the idea of refreshing others and how it leads to personal refreshment.
The episode's focal point is Proverbs 11:25, which states, "The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed." Israel and Rachel reflect on the significance of this verse and how it applies to our lives.
They discuss the misconceptions of self-refreshment and how often we turn to temporary and costly forms of self-indulgence when we're feeling overwhelmed. Instead, they propose a counterintuitive approach – refreshing others first, which ultimately brings the blessing of personal refreshment.
Rachel shares practical ways to put this concept into action, including self-awareness and recognizing selfishness in our lives. They reference the example of Jesus, who broke the cycle of selfishness by serving others. The hosts also mention the apostle Paul's commitment to living his life as a drink offering poured out, exemplifying the value of a life poured out in service.
The episode highlights the idea that living a life of giving and refreshing others is not only rewarding but aligns with God's way and leads to a deeper sense of personal refreshment.
Yes, come on, baby, we are back again. What's?
Speaker 2:up everybody. Good to hear from you, even though we're the ones talking, yeah.
Speaker 1:I guess it's just good to join in with people. I was just talking to somebody on Sunday and they were actually telling me that they enjoy our podcast. Thank you, which I was like oh, and then we're saying that their son was listening and was like is that Pastor Israel?
Speaker 2:and.
Speaker 1:Pastor Rachel. So they knew our voice Isn't that cute. And it was Theo, and that makes it even more special.
Speaker 2:Oh my goodness, theo, if you're listening, you're my favorite.
Speaker 1:Shout outs to. And you too, joe, joe.
Speaker 1:Theo and Joe Joe. So this week is a really big week for us and our church and it is something that was probably birthed. Maybe it was birthed a long time ago, but we really came into fruition just a few years ago and when we just started to invite some of our friends that were pastors and said, hey, we're not going to do a conference, but this is just kind of like a get together, a pastor's refresh, and we had people we've had people from all over, even outside of the United States, but all around the United States, come in and we have just kind of we haven't advertised it, we haven't really marketed it or anything like that, but we just invited some of our pastor friends that we have relationships with, some of our ministry friends and just really focused on refreshing them. Because I think that one of the big things that kind of put inside of us is, if you can refresh a pastor, big shout out for churches. It is, I think it's pastor appreciation month and we don't we're not saying that to our congregation because we are appreciated too much.
Speaker 1:Yes, but if you're listening, in a way, appreciate your pastor, and then, but if you can refresh a pastor, that pastor then can refresh a congregation, and if a congregation can be refreshed, then it can refresh a city. You impact a city, you have a chance to impact your state. You impact a state, you have a chance to obviously make an impact in your nation. And then, of course, if we're saying, from there we can even go into the world, and so just refreshing others, and so that is our assignment this week be praying for us. That's what we're doing for pastors, and it's funny because we wake up early in the morning telling each other, oh, I want to say this or I want to speak this into, or I want to encourage this person. But we also didn't want this to just be a podcast on refreshing pastors, but really getting a hold of this key verse. And so maybe, rach, you want to talk about that, and then we'll get into it.
Speaker 2:Well, you have the verse, so you read it. Okay, it's in front of you.
Speaker 1:The verse is actually Proverbs 11, verse 25. And it says this it says the generous will prosper. And then it says those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed. So there's a lot to unpack from that.
Speaker 2:Yeah, those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed, and something I think that you and I have learned a long time ago is when we're hurting is when we need to pour, and, you know, whenever you're walking through a season where you just feel like life is harder, those are the crucial moments to worship, and worship is not on a platform. Worship is not a song in particular, although that is an act of worship. But our lives being acts of worship, our lives being worship, is when we are hurting. We pour out because we're having faith and we're taking a step towards God, saying God, your word and your promise is that when I refresh others, I'll be refreshed, and I think that the enemy wants to come in and he wants us to wallow in our poor me, in our.
Speaker 2:Look what happened to me. And you know, even this pastor's refresh Israel. It was birthed from tears. It was birthed from loneliness of like God. Are we the only ones who live this way or think this way?
Speaker 2:You know, there have been so many situations and this is not in a hurt or broken attitude, like we're not broken from it, but there have been so many times when we're the only ones who might be in a crowd of pastors who really feel convicted by God about a certain issue, or really feel like God's asking us to live a certain way or do a certain thing, or pastor in LA, when everyone's like you're so dumb to pastor in LA, you could have a huge megaturk if you just moved Idaho, or whatever.
Speaker 2:And I think that you know like we have to go. Hey, all of us walk through seasons that are going to be hard. All of us walk through seasons that are going to take all of our faith, and we're also going to walk through seasons of like wearing us in disappointment. And we love the scripture verse because it's so true Our greatest act of worship is refreshing others, pouring into someone else when they know they were the ones who really need to be poured into. It's kind of like that saying that says it's better to give them to receive. That comes from God.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and this you know, we live. Number one. Let's just say this you need to be refreshed. I mean, life is difficult. We were talking to a couple not too long ago. Just the story is they've got two dogs, they've got three girls and there's a cuss.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it's all I mean this dad that's living with them.
Speaker 1:Both of them have been divorced. Now they're married alimony. Somebody raised their rent. I mean, it's just like life can be overwhelming, and just listening to the stories of life and if you're listening right now you can probably outdo that story we could all be Jerry Springer let's bring it back for a little bit. Jerry, jerry I think we talked about it last week is like we love those shows because it makes us go huh. Okay, we're not the only one or we're not as crazy, but life is tough and you need to be refreshed. The problem is, the world will also tell you you need to be refreshed, but it won't tell you how to be refreshed. You can go on a vacation and need a vacation from your vacation. You can go to a therapist and need therapy from the therapist. You can go to the beach and bring a load of sand back and be frustrated at your kids because they made a mess in the car even though you were just at the beach, and so trying to get refreshed on our own can be exhausting in itself right, rach.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and you know, refreshing ourselves is super expensive. It is usually like the form of a vacation or in the form of alcohol or whatever it is that maybe medicates you to make you happy, and there's a couple things about that that are really good to think about. Is refreshment in the natural usually is super temporary and it usually costs to you more than what it gave you. And we love vacations, we love. Israel loves cruises, because he likes paying one time and then everything being free.
Speaker 2:For him that is refreshing, but you know what I think that sometimes, when we're walking through it and we're going through a season where we need to be refreshed, we make excuses on why we can't be refreshed and why we need to just tough enough, and that's the worst thing that we can do. That's why God created community. That's why God created us, not to just be these lone rangers, but to have people in our world who can see what we're walking through and then be used by God to bring refreshing. It's a principle of our life.
Speaker 2:I think that Israel and I, every single day, try to wake up and not go. Oh, let's make a list of all of the things that are really hard right now, and there is one or we could wake up every day and go God, who do you want me to be your hands and feet to? Who do you want me to do, say a word to, or bring a dinner to, or include in my life that they really need to be refreshed? And what happens every single time, isn't it? We've said it over and over, but you just can't out give God. Yeah, you can't out give God. And so it's a lifestyle and it's also an act of worship to be a refreshing person.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and it takes just as much energy to be refreshing than it takes to be disappointed. There's no energy calculation that says, oh, this is going to be more, but the reward is so much greater. And it really is kind of like what you said earlier, rachel it's better to give than to receive. I mean on Christmas time, like it's cool that you get me gifts. I love it, but I, more than anything, look forward to ooh, I thought about this, I found it. Ooh, I got it on sale. She would never buy this for herself. I can't wait for her to open this up on Christmas. Versus. Look, I'm 51 and I'm looking through the tree at my presence and still trying to guess what they are. Like oh, I hope I got this, or I hope I get this. Do you know what I mean? I'm like I'm at the age. If I want something I can go buy.
Speaker 2:No, you're not, and we have a rule in our family that he is not allowed to shop for anything online or in person from November on.
Speaker 1:Yes.
Speaker 2:Because Israel is like the most difficult. He just likes all these fun little weird things and if I can hear him or see something that you'd like, I get so excited about what is happening over and over, and I'm not bitter.
Speaker 1:No, no, you're refreshing.
Speaker 2:But you go and do it for yourself. And do you know what is such a principle, honestly? Is that sometimes we do that with God? Isn't it Like we'll go and refresh ourselves instead of going to the fountain?
Speaker 1:Never run, stuck Like this was not on our production notes. Whatsoever about me on this. I was going to the house. You need to start thinking about not shopping.
Speaker 2:You can do this, I believe in you. Okay, but honestly, as Christians, babe, we do this. As believers, we always go to the wrong things, we always try to self fulfill, and God wants to be the one, he wants to be our source, and sometimes we just don't even let him. Okay, he's our last option.
Speaker 1:Well, let's go. You totally hijacked my point where I was talking about something, another direction, and I feel rebuked.
Speaker 1:And this is what makes it Campbell soup Refresh others and then it will be themselves. So we talked about that. Just that it is. It's counterintuitive. When you're exhausted, when you're overwhelmed, when you are lonely, when you are frustrated, that's not the time, naturally, that it feels like, oh, I should actually get out and refresh others. But the kingdom of God is so different than this world, and so we get that with.
Speaker 1:What about tidying? Why would we tie first before we get the blessing? Why do we serve? I mean, there's so many things that why would we forgive so many things that we live in that are counterintuitive to the world? But man do? They bring a blessing. And so scripture says if you will begin to refresh others first, you will be refreshed. And I think that we've settled for semi-refreshing or artificial refreshing instead of full refreshment of God. And there is nothing like the atmosphere, the tone, the feeling of being refreshed by God versus all the alternatives. And God gives us a way to do it is begins to refresh others. So I guess maybe my question would be Rachel, how is that in a practical way, like it's a cute scripture. I mean you could get something from Etsy, etsy, etsy and get it, you know a nice little design on your wall and put that and it'd be so cute. You know what I mean. Or what's the practical. How do we do that?
Speaker 2:Yeah, I think for me, practical ways to do it is recognizing when I'm becoming selfish, and recognizing and having the self-awareness and asking the Holy Spirit to convict me and show me when I am beginning to be like self-driven and self-cute, setting in and my world's becoming smaller. You know, that's the thing is like. The thing that breaks a selfish spirit is generosity. It's going outside of ourselves and we live in a society that not only excuses being selfish but it champions me first, me first, me first. And it sounds good. It sounds like it sounds really good, like almost like counseling jargon, you know, like it's really good sounding. But God's ways are completely different and Jesus did not come to be served, but to serve. Jesus broke lack off of our life, not only in our soul, but he broke lack off of our life in having no peace and having no joy and being unrefreshed. He broke that by giving his life and he's our model. And so the way that we break feeling in the rut of not being refreshed is by giving our life.
Speaker 2:And Paul said I have a scripture verse, it's one of our life verses. I love it so stinking much, but we talk about it all the time and it's just. I have lived my life as a drink offering poured out. And he's just talking about how he didn't live his life to Buy houses, have nice cars, have the perfect family. He lived his life to pour out, like his father, god, did, and that that scripture convicts me a lot, because we live in a world that doesn't encourage living a life poured out. But the greatest like to live, the most rewarding way to live, is by pouring out, and what's so beautiful about it is the Scripture verse when we are empty, he refills us. When we pour out for the right things, he's faithful to continually refresh us, and so that's what I, that's what I do. I think that you've been really amazing at that too is when you're feeling discouraged.
Speaker 1:I know you have a hit, don't, don't take my point.
Speaker 2:That's gonna be your point.
Speaker 1:Don't take my point. You had so many points, this is, and then you added like, oh, and this is what you do. Like that? That would be the only thing that I have.
Speaker 2:As we give our points, god gives us more.
Speaker 1:Oh, so I saw so my points into your place with you for so long.
Speaker 2:Your points are my point. Okay, that's the whole point. Your point, or more my point.
Speaker 1:Everybody that just heard that that, um, our points are shared. That is so good here, because normally I am accused of stealing her points.
Speaker 2:I can. Literally the only way that this podcast works is if I secretly write my notes Because he wants to go over them, and then he will literally hijack the one point that I had that God gave me. That was really good. He'll say it before I get to you. And now you're saying I'm doing that, but I'm just in the spirit of you, babe, I'm just I'm not.
Speaker 1:I am not actually a just for the whole listening audience, I am not. And watching audience, I am not a point. Um, hijacker, I am the one that coordinates this whole thing and I can bring my wife back on the subject by bringing up her point that she wrote before. And then she says I'm stealing it. I am definitely uh, I'm not going anywhere and you are my ride and die.
Speaker 2:I know when you say that we are best friends.
Speaker 1:We are, we are, so we get it Okay.
Speaker 2:Um so.
Speaker 1:So refreshing. Uh, one of the practical things, because we're talking about practical things, or at least that's what I asked you to talk about.
Speaker 2:Wow, you're feisty today.
Speaker 1:What are the practical things that I do is, yes, when I'm feeling discouraged. Maybe we had a terrible church service, maybe attendance was down and it was just like where is everybody in LA? They all go to the beach on the same day and I hate beach festival days. You know these moments like are we making a difference? And I can feel discouraged that that is a time that I go through my phone and I encourage people and, um, it's usually not what I'm feeling like a billion bucks that I encourage them. I usually feel like it's when I'm not doing good.
Speaker 1:Hey, I'm gonna encourage some people and I encourage people that I am A pastor over. I encourage people that I'm a pastor with and I even encourage some generals in the faith that I just hey, don't need anything from. This is a pretty classic statement from israel hey, don't need anything from you. Because if somebody is maybe in a position Of influence or something, you don't always want to be texting them that you need something. So I'm just hey, don't need anything from you and just was thinking about you. So grateful for you. What an impact you have made my wife and I's life.
Speaker 1:Maybe, depending on who it is hey, we wouldn't even be in ministry if it wasn't for you, or man, I see you blowing it up so proud of you, cheering you on from North Korea, I mean la and uh, little things you know kind of funny or whatever. But just refresh, and um, I Love doing that, I get done doing that maybe three, four people or real quick. Sometimes it's at a light, you know where you. It's those long la lights where you have enough time to actually write a whole book and then I just send it, and Sometimes I'll even send the same thing to somebody else. Just kind of kind of change it a little bit, maybe make it more personal. But I'm just like what I want to think.
Speaker 2:I want to refresh as many people Text from you and you copypaste, is that, hey, bro, don't want anything from you, and I'm like, okay, you never got one before in your life.
Speaker 1:I will say this, though One time I was texting a guy, two people and I did cut a copy paste and two of the people, who don't even live in the same state, were together they're my friends and they both got the same and they busted me and I was like Quick it, but it was good. I was like, but I believe it for both of you wasn't like a bust, say the lord, or anything.
Speaker 2:I didn't vote for you doing separate texts that are like really personal from now on okay, chat gbt. Oh no, that is our other favorite. I get it and I'm like this is not a text from me. Rachel, I'm thinking about you and as I think about that date that we got married.
Speaker 1:I'll set Never have gotten the chat gbt text from. I have gotten chat gbt never.
Speaker 2:Maybe not to me, but about things and I'm like, wow, this is not israel camp.
Speaker 1:I need it. I can't spell and I have grammar issues, so I use it.
Speaker 2:Okay, so that was my. Practical is very refreshing for you.
Speaker 1:Yes so I send out text messages. What do you do, Rachel?
Speaker 2:Okay, I know some practical. Really, do you want to guess what mine are?
Speaker 1:Yeah, I know one for you for sure. Let's see, try to say it, let's just see okay, that one of your number one ways to refresh people is you want to invite them over to the house and you want to cook for them.
Speaker 2:That's true.
Speaker 1:But that wasn't on your list.
Speaker 2:No, but that is true. I like to do that.
Speaker 1:You do.
Speaker 2:What's refreshing for me is, when my life is crazy, to have my house not crazy, and so it's really important for me to have our house a home, probably more than most people, because I feel like there's a lot that we are willfully willing to pour out. But because of that, if our house feels chaotic, then I feel a little bit ripped off, and the enemy will come in in that way and make me feel like, look, your family suffers from what you do, and so, to combat that, I just always try to make sure our house is just a place of peace, that we hang out here, that at least about three times or more a week, I'm cooking and trying to catch up on laundry there's usually a little bit or two that are still sitting there unfolded, but that brings me peace and refreshing, but that's not my point. My point is, I guess, though, is a good thing, but my point is really spiritual and that is just, honestly, when I'm feeling dry, the last, it's hard for me to get into God's presence.
Speaker 2:And so, instead of trying to be a prayer warrior I don't put that on myself because that's really just trying to be something that I'm really not feeling and I really believe in having a genuine relationship with God that's in it for the long haul. And so when I'm feeling far off, sometimes I'll soak and I won't try to have an hour of prayer because my spirit's tired and God can handle that. And I think sometimes we feel guilty about having a season of maybe a little bit of a desert season or dryness, and it doesn't mean that you've done something wrong and it doesn't mean that God's backed away from you. It just means that life is distracted or life is. Maybe there's even a little bit of a spiritual attack. And so just being quiet and receiving from the Holy Spirit in a sacred place is really important and I just breathe in the presence of God until I can get up and start to fight again. And that's a really big one for me.
Speaker 1:I love it, that's good.
Speaker 2:Sometimes you'll walk in on me and I'm just laying there receiving and you're like what are you doing?
Speaker 1:I'm soaking, I'm soaking, okay. So another practical one for me. If you want to be refreshed and again it's counterintuitive because I think our schedules, everybody's schedules, are so busy We've got kids in soccer, you've got kids in baseball, we have girls doing ballerina, we have PTA, we have an office party, we have, I mean, just all of these things crammed into life. And one of the things if you want to stay refreshing I think this scripture talks about again it's so different is you have to refresh others. One of the people that the people that I love and it's amazing is the people at our church, and maybe I'll just throw out Corbin Jones, since we threw out his boys earlier, but he is on the go. He is running traveling gigs, projects, you know all this kind of stuff, and he comes in early on Sunday and is serving on the team. He's refreshing the congregation because he's on the worship team. I think of somebody like Skyler that works at SpaceX, works in a billion hours a day, it seems like, because their shirts that they wear is Occupy Mars and so they've got all these initiatives they're trying to do. But then he comes in and he serves and I have talked to these guys and I'm like, oh, I'm so sorry you were there early and so whatever. And they're like this is where I get refreshed. And it's like, oh and so the concept again is counterintuitive.
Speaker 1:When we talked about it last week, people saying church hurt and you know, burnout and all those kind of things, and they're real, they're so true. But if you can grab ahold of this thing, you'll go to God's house and be a greeter. You'll go into God's house and be in the children's ministry. You'll go into God's house and serve. Do you know what God's word says? You'll actually be refreshed, more than if you stayed at home and just vaged on the couch. You know what I mean. Just like, oh, life is so tall, I'm so tired. And then by Monday you're exhausted again, actually going to God's house and becoming refreshing for others, having a mindset. This church isn't about just me, me, me, me, me, me, me, but it's about pouring out. You'll actually go in Monday revived. People go like what kind of coffee are you on? What kind of vitamins are you taking? Oh, I've been refreshed by God because I've been refreshing others. So that's my last practical. You got one more practical.
Speaker 2:My last practical is start doing something that makes you happy. I think sometimes we get so serious and life gets so business transaction with everything. Our schedules are full, our lives are full, the pressure is on, we see bad news on the news, all the things, and I think that doing something that makes you happy should not make you feel guilty. And even if you can't stop and do something that makes you happy for a couple hours, but could you do something that makes you happy for half an hour? And for Israel and I, that's a walk at the beach and I know not everyone has a beach, but I promise you if you did, you'd be happy.
Speaker 1:When we lived in North Carolina, we walked.
Speaker 2:There were no good walking places and we would get a Starbucks and we would walk around the target parking lot together and it would be refreshing. And so it's not really the scenery, it's the taking in something new, it's the breathing air outside, it's getting a different perspective that I think begins to refresh you. And then something that I do that I absolutely love to do and some people hate it, but I love to go thrifting a little bit, like for 20 minutes I'll go look for a treasure in our cool thrift stores here, and a lot of things in our house are like amazing finds, like that big, huge, giant black lamp. It's that black mirror, it's like four feet round and I got that at Salvation Army for $19. And that is refreshing. But you know, just that's something that I've always loved to do.
Speaker 2:I think it's because we are in the business of helping people get restored. But sometimes restoration in people take 20 years, 10 years, doing it slowly, with purpose and having patience and all of those things, and I can get something and I can spray paint it or I could strip it and refinish it. And my house is filled with those things because it's instant gratification of seeing something be changed and it really is refreshing to me. And it might not be refreshing to everyone. You hate it. I usually do it when you're out of time. You're like, why are you sanding our entire dining room table? But for me it's refreshing. And so, finding the things, what's refreshing to you, israel, what are the things that you love? You love your working out. You love football.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I mean Monday night football. Come on, how refreshing is that.
Speaker 2:But finding those opportunities, and it doesn't have to always be spiritual.
Speaker 1:Yeah, no, I think that's so good. I remember one time Casey Treat had mentioned on Mondays he would go on like a 60 mile bike ride and I was like you're like I didn't get it, but it was like what he was saying is, after you know, five services on a Sunday, just staying at home wasn't refreshing. What was refreshing was actually doing something to get his mind off of everything. So when you're doing 60 miles, you're not thinking about the church service, you're not thinking about all the different things that still need to go. You know what I mean, and so I think that that is really powerful. You know we want to stay refreshing. How do you do that?
Speaker 1:And I go into your point it's kind of find those little micro things that can keep you refreshing. And you know, not all of us can are schedule wise. You know we don't have the luxury of vacation or maybe the luxury of a weekend getaway, but the microbes can actually add up and be greater than eight days somewhere with nothing to do, you know, and we come back still exhausted versus taking those micro refreshing moments and really taking them and depositing them. And so, and then I think that the only I didn't have another point. But just talking about that is, we gave some practical, but the spiritual is really taking some. Maybe some of those mini moments of just Holy Spirit refresh me.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and the Holy Spirit of God is with us everywhere we go. It's not just in our worship services, but literally while I'm out and just spending time, you know, looking for some sort of a cool antique or something, I include the Holy Spirit and living a lifestyle of continual prayer and not prayer, closet prayer. I think sometimes we can really minimize taking the Holy Spirit with us and creating opportunities to bring God along. It's really powerful.
Speaker 1:Yeah, that's the way and that was the title of our podcast today is Staying Refreshing, and we want that to happen in your own life and we. You know it is a mindset sometimes of, no, I'm going to stay refreshed, and then it's also a mindset of getting into God's word and saying, hey, I can't do this on my own. I need God to help me do that, and so somebody just pray for everybody. Yeah, I think we should definitely pray for everybody.
Speaker 2:All right. So if you could just kind of receive right now, god, we just thank you that you are the author of life, lord, you know our beginning to our end and you know us intricately. So I pray, god, that you help us learn how to be refreshed by you. And then, god, I also pray that you'll give us creative ways to be refreshing to others as we live out our days, lord, that as we live lives that are poured out as worship to you. Lord, all that you ever do is pour in more. So we ask for that in Jesus' name, amen.
Speaker 1:Amen, I love that and obviously we would love for you to follow us, share this podcast with your friends or coworkers or family members and that you can follow. You know, follow and find out more podcast information on our Instagram and then if you have questions, you can actually email us at info at flourishingchurch. And maybe it's a question about life family minister you want us to address on the podcast. You know, I actually, rick, I didn't tell you this. I actually had somebody wanted to talk about Israel and Hamas and say to do that, and I was like I texted them back and said I don't feel like I'm an expert on that, but I will find somebody that I trust and I will send that to you. And so that was cool. Just like you know, send us a question and if we don't know the answer, we could definitely point you towards somebody. I have no problem saying oh, I'm not an expert on that, I have some thoughts about it. Of course, with my name being Israel, I'm definitely very pro-Israel, whether or not my name was, I love.
Speaker 2:God's people. I know, I know, I've just said. And we're pro-people. Yes, and you know what I've been praying? This is just a side note. I've been praying that, through this, even the worst enemy will have an encounter with Jesus. They're all created by God, and some of us are just in a lot of deception, and so we need to just be praying for the spirit of God to hover.
Speaker 1:Absolutely we want, and it really shows us how much you know the end times and things that are happening, and so we need to be intentional about everything we do. But those are the things. We love you. And we'll see you next week.
