Israel & Rachel Campbell "SOUP" Podcast
Welcome to Season 3 of the Campbell Soup Podcast with Israel and Rachel Campbell. We are celebrating over 10,800 downloads and counting, thanks to listeners like you. We started this podcast with a simple idea: discipleship should be more than a classroom, it should be a way of life. When Jesus walked with His disciples, the lessons did not happen behind a podium but along the road, around meals, and through conversations about real life. That is exactly what we do here.
Each episode is like sitting down to a hearty bowl of soup, warm, nourishing, and full of flavor. We talk about life, love, parenting, relationships, faith, and whatever else bubbles up along the way. Some moments will make you laugh, others might make you think, but every conversation is stirred with honesty, hope, and a little humor. So pull up a chair, grab your spoon, and join us for another season of real talk, real life, and real discipleship, one spoonful at a time.

Spot the Knockoff
A broken purse handle, a crowded green room, and a flush of embarrassment, funny on the surface, but it points to something deeper: how easily we’re drawn to convincing copies. We kick off season three by tracing that everyday story to Jude’s urgent call to contend for a faith that’s the real thing, not a polished knockoff.
We unpack why Jude shifted from writing about shared salvation to warning about counterfeits already creeping into the church. Instead of stoking exposé culture or training our “spiritual suspicion,” we explore a better way to discern: know the genuine so well that the fake feels wrong. That begins with Scripture shaping our instincts, not just our opinions. It continues with a daily, honest walk with the Holy Spirit who counsels, convicts, and comforts without shame. And it grows inside communities where iron sharpens iron—humble people who have suffered, stayed, and kept their hearts soft—so life change happens in circles, not just in rows.
We also press into radical honesty as the antidote to pretense. God desires truth in the inward parts, and pretending to be further along erodes the soul. By sharing personal stories and practical practices, we point to a culture where leaders and learners can tell the truth early, seek help, and keep going. If you’re tired of outrage threads and hungry for resilient, non‑performative faith, this conversation offers clarity and courage to build on the Word, walk with the Spirit, choose honest friends, and refuse the counterfeit when it whispers loud.
If this resonates, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs encouragement, and leave a quick review—what helps you stay close to the real?
Welcome to season three, Campbell Soup Podcast.
SPEAKER_00:I've been waiting for this moment for a while now.
SPEAKER_01:We are back and we are excited about this season. And what's been fun is actually traveling and things like that, getting people to come up and go, when are you guys going to do another season of your podcast? And so this is fun. Not only do we do it for our church, but then all of our friends that are from everywhere around the world. And so whether you are maybe on a treadmill, maybe you're on a commute, maybe I like to say this. You don't really like to say me saying it, but maybe you are trying to match orphan socks together.
SPEAKER_00:Why would I not like that? Because I don't like laundry.
SPEAKER_01:I hate laundry. Yes, but I always know you're doing something while you're doing it. So I was just thinking maybe you could be listening to a podcast.
SPEAKER_00:So podcasts are fun because you can just join whenever, wherever. We have a lot of people that commute with traffic. So we hope that you tune in while you're doing that.
SPEAKER_01:Yes, so we are back. We're excited about this season. And just practically, if there's a subject that you want to talk about, you can email us at the church at info at flourishing.church. Tell us, hey, love your podcast, but would love for you guys to talk about this. And not only will we talk about it, but we will talk a lot about it, right, Rach?
SPEAKER_00:Well, I like to keep Israel random and he likes to keep me organized. And so we will probably be covering every subject you ever wanted in this next series.
SPEAKER_01:And it's season two.
SPEAKER_00:That's my guarantee to you.
SPEAKER_01:We will cover everything. But today's podcast, season three, episode one, is how to spot a knockoff. And this is something we are good at. I'll never forget the time we were in New York. Big shout out to all of our New York friends. They would always ask us what we wanted to do. So we do the tourist things, but also we wanted to go to Canal Street. And Canal Street.
SPEAKER_00:And by we, we mean Israel.
SPEAKER_01:Yes, and Canal Street is where you get the knockoffs. And so many times, many trips to New York, we have been to Canal Street. We knew and know the routine. And one time I remember being there, Rachel, we were in one of the little stores. Next thing I know, you were gone. They had opened up a little closet and you had gone through.
SPEAKER_00:I got caught up in the moment and I forgot to tell you I was going to the dungeon.
SPEAKER_01:Yes, came out with black garbage bags full of things, and I knew that those were knockoffs. And then, of course, our favorite famous knockoff story is the time we were going to a conference, and you know, just a bunch of people that were there that we were wanting to maybe try to impress or be cool. I had gone to you know, to New York, bought this purse, and as we came in, Rachel, to this like green room or waiting room, somebody said that we really liked. Oh, Rachel, I like your purse. And as you brought it up, I'll never forget, I can still see it today in slow motion. The knockoff handle broke, and then everything in your purse fell to the floor. And I think he knew that that was not a real Louis Vuitton, that it was a fooie baton.
SPEAKER_00:And then we're in the green room, and of course, when it breaks, I yell, it's not real. And Israel's sitting there, like, get me out of here. And also, I'm not the kind of girl that has like a super organized purse. I just shove everything in there. So, like, I think my in-ear monitors from leading worship the week before came out. There's a baby pacifier, who knows? Our garage door opener. And poor Israel, like for me, it's just another adventure. And for him, he's just dying.
SPEAKER_01:I was mortified because I think as you lifted up, I think you said, Oh, Israel just bought it for me. And as that happened, so yes, so we are talking about how to spot a knockoff. We've been doing a series at our church called Hey Jude, which has to do with Jude, who is Jesus' little brother, writing a book. And he says this, Jude chapter one, uh verses three through four. Dear friends, I have been eagerly planning to write to you about the salvation we all share. But now I find that I must write about something else, urging you to defend the faith that God has entrusted once for all time to his holy people. I say this because some ungodly people have wormed their way into your churches, saying that God's marvelous grace allows us to live immoral lives. The condemnation of such people was recorded long ago, for they have denied our only master and Lord Jesus Christ. And so what we've been talking about is just the counterfeits that sneak in. A little history behind what Jude is saying is Jude, who is a contemporary of Peter, reads Peter's epistle, 2 Peter, actually even quotes it word for word later on in Jude. But Jude was planning on writing kind of a common salvation book, a book about basic Christianity. And then all of a sudden he reads Peter's book, whose Peter says, in the end times, you're going to see these counterfeits. And Jude writes, hey, it's not only in the future, it's happening now. And so Jude begins to write about it. And when Jude writes about counterfeits and knockoffs, Rachel, he isn't just pointing out other people. He's also pointing out the attitudes, the spirits behind it. That's why he brings up Balaam and Cain and even Sodom and Gomorrah. So it's not just about people, but it's also about mentalities, it's about spirits, and it's even about how we can bring that knockoff counterfeit Christianity into our churches or into the faith. And so that's what we're going to talk about today. And I think it's so powerful. It's so um relative to today. And so that's it.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, I've been loving the series on Hey Jude. And if you want to kind of listen to it, it's on the Flourishing website. I think you can just go there and watch the YouTube because these last four weeks of Flourishing Church, if you're a member of the church, you know. But they've been so good and so you we had no idea what was going to be going on in the world when you began that series four weeks ago. But it has been just Holy Spirit led because it's exactly what the church needs to hear right now, I believe, is just that there is a spirit and there is our flesh that try to worm things into our faith. And Judas saying, contend for the faith, you know, fight for the faith, fight for the truth of God's word so that you don't begin to have this fake Christianity that's actually a counterfeit of what God really wants to do on earth in 2025. And that's what we're going to talk about today.
SPEAKER_01:I love that. When I was going to Bible college, I worked at a home improvement warehouse.
SPEAKER_00:And you're the best-looking cashier. I used to visit all the time.
SPEAKER_01:Such a cool cashier, bright yellow, orange aprons. Those were the days. Do not despise the days of small beginnings. But one of the things that we did was that they taught us how to find what counterfeit money was. And what they trained us, and what they trained bank tailors, is how you find out what is counterfeit is by knowing what the real bills feel like. And so we would feel the difference between a real bill, a real bill, a real bill, a real bill. And then when a counterfeit, it would feel different, and we'd go, hey, this isn't right. And so that's what we're wanting to talk about today. And that's such a good analogy. It's such a good story because I do know that today we have those little pins and you can come in and kind of highlight and see if it's real or if it's not. But I I feel like one of the best things that you and I can do as Christ followers is if we're going to know what a counterfeit is, we have to know what the real thing is, or we have to be the real thing first. Yeah. And if you get that wrong, you'll never know what's real. Because if all you do is spot counterfeits and know what a counterfeit is, and you just know that, then a real one would get in and you wouldn't even know it was real because you're so gung ho on finding counterfeits. And so one of the greatest ways for you and I to spot knockoffs, spot counterfeits is being the real deal.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. And, you know, we live in a world that is loving to expose things. You know, documentaries have never been more famous. You know, we've got the American gospel, I think it's called. And I do not watch them because it really is studying counterfeits and it's emphasizing things that are wrong instead of things that are right about the faith. And I think it's really important for us to guard our heart. And we live in a world that excuses wrong behaviors and judgment and shame culture and all of these things that are anti-contending for the faith. And if we're going to remain strong in days that are heavy and dark, we have got to be people that refuse to study and be searchers of the fake and accusers of the brethren and shamers of other churches and shamers of other ministries. And, you know, all of those things is what our world is caught up in. But actually in Jude, it says in the last days that there will be spirits that creep its way into our faith, but we're supposed to strengthen and contend for the faith that Jesus came to bring us on earth. And so I think it's such an important conversation to talk about that there is a spirit in the church right now. There is a spirit on Christians right now. We're not even talking about sinners, we're talking about the spirit that's creeping its way into the church right now and trying to affect and weaken our faith instead of strengthening our faith. And we just want to encourage you, it doesn't have to be that way. That doesn't have to be your focus, and maybe even say it shouldn't be your focus. And we need to run with the wise. We need to strengthen our faith. We need to start studying what it's what is real so that it's easy to separate. Wait, that's not the right spirit. That's not the heart of God. That's not what the Holy Spirit is doing on earth right now. And I just told Israel this morning when we were kind of going over our notes. I just don't want to be a woman who my greatest spiritual gifting is suspicion. Yeah. I don't want to spend my days looking at who isn't doing their faith right, because the Bible talks about working out my own faith with fear and trembling. And that that job is big enough for me. And I found Israel, and maybe you can speak to this, but for me, when I am not working on my faith is when I'm the most critical of someone else's faith. But when I'm really caught up in what the Holy Spirit is speaking, what I'm reading in the Word of God, being challenged on my own and leading the church well with pure hands and a clean heart, that's when I'm really not that concerned about other people's faith and I'm not criticizing other pastors and ministries, but it's when I'm actually not working on my own faith, when I'm not contending for the faith on a personal level, that I get into trouble of starting to be letting that spirit creep in that's a counterfeit gospel.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, and I it goes back to just that analogy is they teach bank tellers how to know what's counterfeit is by by spending time with the real. And so this isn't a a podcast on, oh, just ignore everything that's out there. This isn't a podcast on, well, dude was wrong. That was 2,000 years ago. It's not sneaking in now. No, no, we are very much knowing it's sneaking, but the best way of knowing is not listening to a podcast that is always going off on who the other is. Following somebody on Twitter who is the church exposer doesn't make you know what's counterfeit. Now you'll just be like you said, your greatest new spiritual tool is suspicion on everything. And that doesn't bring change and transformation to your life, right? Because again, then something real could come in, but because you're so suspicious of everything, you would even think something that was genuine, you wouldn't know it. And so part of developing our genuine faith is what we want to talk about today, is that is so good, Rachel. It's between us and God. And the more you're with God, the more you're tuned into Him, it'll be so easy for you to go, that's of a wrong spirit. That's not the right thing. And that's what we want. And to not be like those people that have the little earphones and the little metal detectors and just looking everywhere and then pulling up this little thing. Can you believe what I found? And it's like, I don't want to live that way. So I want to live wise, but I do understand I want to start with me first. Amen. Let's see what's in my heart that need that is counterfeit, and then go on. So we have a couple different things that we think that would be so um practical to me. This is the Monday practicality of how do we do that? How do we keep our faith genuine? And I think that the first one is the word of God, and that may sound like, oh, that's what they always say, but no.
SPEAKER_00:That's always point number one.
SPEAKER_01:That's always point number one. But you know, we live in a world in a society that says, you know, be your own, trust your heart. That's your that's your thoughts or whatever. And the Bible says that the heart is deceitfully wicked, and and so we don't make decisions on how we feel about something. We don't make decisions how, because that's what creeps in. Well, it's not really bad if I watch that and it just creeps in or I listen to that. No, we make decisions based on the word of God, and we've got to have more of the word of God in us than the latest Twitter feed of somebody that is pointing out all the flaws of all the people or the YouTube channel that is, you know, the the scandal finders. No, no, no, no. We've got to have more word than that. Let it not be that's what we spend two hours on versus five minutes of the word. No, be a pig, be a hippo for the word of God. That I have a massive appetite for what does God's word say? What does God's word say about this? What is God's word saying to me? What is the word pointing to me? What is the word exposing in my life? What is the word speaking to my family? That will change that so dramatically, you'll begin to be genuine because then when you know the word and you know what it says, that is what it we go back to that story. Is then you'll know when somebody's saying something, you're like, that's not the word. That is new age, that is selfish, that is, you know, the world's thinking, not what God says about something.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. And I just think, you know, right now, there are a lot of emboldened Christians that have a lot to say that is not, you know, sometimes it can come across really heavy-handed, very judgmental, very shame-driven. But when you read the word of God, it strengthens you from the inside. It's like this Holy Spirit, it's like this iron strength inside of you where you're strengthened to believe the truth. You're strengthened to see God in the midst of chaos. And, you know, when there's a big difference between strengthened by the word and the power of the Holy Spirit and being emboldened by being mouthy.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, can you say that again, please?
SPEAKER_00:I really feel like God is not calling us to be emboldened on our stances, but to be strengthened in our faith. And there is a big difference. And the world will be attracted, the lost who are looking for something stable, some hope, they are going to be very attracted to the strengthening of the word of God from the inside of you when you know who you are, more than you being an emboldened Christian that is mouthing off what you believe and it's us against you, and you're wrong, and I'm right. That is not what the word of God does for us. The word of God brings us low, it humbles us, it reminds us where we actually are in our walk with Jesus, and then it empowers us and it strengthens us to be able to walk out the promises of God. That's so good, Israel. And I love that you lead our family by the word of God. Every time that we're in the middle of something that just feels too big for our family, like something heartbreaking or something difficult, Israel always comes to our family and he reads the word of God. This is what the scripture says that Nehemiah, he fought with one hand and he built the house of God. Like our kids know that Israel's response is his first point is always going to be read the word of God. And it's not because he's a traditional, this is what I always have been told. It's it's actually how he lives and it makes me feel safe. But number two, how do we strengthen and have a genuine faith in a world that has a lot of counterfeit going on? Number two is really having a strong relationship with the Holy Spirit. And you know, for me, it's so easy to memorize scripture. I'm good at memory, I can make little songs, I can have the scripture, I know scripture, I know where to find scripture, but that's actually not enough. You know, to know scripture is different than allowing the scripture to become a mirror and asking the Holy Spirit, really submitting to the Holy Spirit and including the Holy Spirit and saying, How am I doing on this scripture? Have I personally, God, have I let things creep in that I think are truth that aren't truth? And it's so it's so easy. And I think sometimes we can be so good at the Christian. I studied the word this morning. I had my quiet time. But I think the most important part, especially in days like we're living in, where there are so many confusing voices, we have got to use the word of God as a mirror and allow the Holy Spirit to really convict us and help us walk it out on a daily basis. I feel like if you have less scripture, but you're actually allowing it to mirror you and change you and chisel away, it's better than having a lot of scripture that you've been this studious person, but you're not changing.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, and I maybe it's both and it is so powerful to have the Holy Spirit, who the Bible says is the counselor. The Bible says that the Holy Spirit is the teacher. And so to like what you're saying is getting that scripture and letting the Holy Spirit, how does that apply to you? Like I love that. You know, the thing about the Holy Spirit, too, is the Holy Spirit wants you to change. The Holy Spirit brings conviction, brings not condemnation, but conviction. You can do better. You're better than that. You you can change that area. That that's not like you said, I love the word mirror. That's not how Jesus would be. And so I love that, Rachel. The more and more we get good at the Holy Spirit, good morning, Holy Spirit. Yeah, Holy Spirit, not my will, but your will be done. And so I do agree with you. We can get in a religious. Well, I just read these verse I'm reading the Bible plan and I check off the box and then leave. No, it should be interactive with the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit is speaking, the Holy Spirit is reminding what the word of God says, so you can't actually even be reminded unless you've been told. And so getting the word of God in you, then having the Holy Spirit remind you, it is so, so powerful. And and and he wants to, right? The Holy Spirit wants to, and so so many times us doing a counseling session in a situation that wasn't necessarily a sit-down counseling situation, it was a traumatic situation. And under my breath, I'm just like, Holy Spirit, speak to me, Holy Spirit. So I I really agree with you. If you want to be authentic, if you want to not be a knockoff, allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you and speak through you and really allow there. Should be some, shouldn't there be like we all have opinions, we all have things that we're really passionate about, but the Holy Spirit will change those. The Holy Spirit will go, hey, that's what you're passionate about, but not what I'm passionate about, and really convicting and doing that. And so I think that if you're reading, you could couldn't you just read scripture to reaffirm what you're frustrated with?
SPEAKER_00:Absolutely. If we look for scripture to back up our, you know, dysfunction, we will absolutely be able to, but you won't be able to if you ask the Holy Spirit to bring you revelation. You'll be convicted. And it's beautiful because when the Holy Spirit convicts me, it feels like love. You know, when I give a boundary to our kids, it's because I really love them and want them to be their best. Same with the Holy Spirit is the Holy Spirit knows us and also knows what we need. And so when the Holy Spirit convicts, it's not judgment and shame, it's love.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, so good. I think that this was good. And this was again, you and I were talking, and this was actually something that you brought up, but it's my point to say. But uh, having a relationship with people who you know are genuine in their faith. And the Bible says it in a very simple metaphor: iron sharpens iron. So real sharpens real, helps create real. And so it's so important to get around healthy people. In fact, a lot of times you hanging around somebody that is really healthy in a marriage, and you see that they don't yell at each other. You see that maybe they have healthy boundaries. Oh, they don't even go off and and talk alone to somebody on the opposite. All these kind of things that you don't see or even allow to be in your life unless you're around healthy people. And so I think that that's so good, Rachel, is that's why, of course, church is not perfect, but that's why we do is because it's a group of people that are all wanting to be genuine. We're coming on a Sunday, wanting to be genuine. That's why you know, groups are so good. What's the phrase that you said that was so good? Is that like church happens in squares, but commute? What was that was so good?
SPEAKER_00:Well, just like you know, the church service, you know, God moves in a church service in lines, all of our seats are in lines, but life change happens in circles. And so when you're doing life with people and you're in that circle setting and you have those relationships, your circle of people, that's where your life changes. And you know, we've all heard it, but show me your friends and I'll show you your future. And it's true. And that doesn't mean that it does not mean that we don't have people that are behind us or who haven't arrived, because none of us have really arrived. But the whole point is that we look for the people that are honest. I would rather be with someone who doesn't know everything, but they're really honest and they're they're hungry to become all that God has called them to be, and they're humble enough to know they're not there yet. Those are my people because they're being honest, they're being real, they're hungry for the truth. And I think that that's a lot better than being in a circle of people who are all trying to out-spiritualize each other and who knows more and all of those things. Sometimes who's more discerning? It can that can actually birth without it's like an unintended consequence that everyone thinks they have to be something they're actually not yet. And that is that will stop up your authenticity.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, I love that. I was just thinking so true of, you know, I want to hang out with you. Said people that know that they haven't arrived yet and they're still working on it. I also want to, I want to hang out with people that have had this not knocked out of them and they're still in the game. Amen. Do you know what I mean? I I don't want to hang out with people that like are done with church and just, you know, critical and and suspicious. Every all of that. No, give me somebody that has been in the church and was wronged, but is still in the church, yeah, and loves Jesus and is like those are the people I want to hang out with, not just all the ones that are like, you know, deconstructing or just mad and and and have a list of I've been to these 10 churches and they all hurt me and never realizing maybe you could have been the reason. You know what I mean? And so I I like people that are still in the game, still in the faith, still fighting and saying, hey, it's not perfect, but neither am I, which really goes to um our last point.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. And so the last thing that we really want to just talk about, because we think that in our heart we need more of this. And we also feel like right now the church needs more of this, but Christians need more of this. And it's the last point, it's be honest with where you really are. And I love Psalms 51, six. It says, God, you desire truth in my inmost parts. And you know, I think that there's this pressure to be something that we're not, and it's an unspoken pressure that can happen in church, it can happen for leaders, it can happen for new Christians, it can happen for pastors, but we can start feeling like we need to portray this place that we are instead of where we really are, and it's the biggest enemy to health. And, you know, Israel and I, we have had to go to a recent, we've had some really heartbreaking friends moments where we really had to walk through some valleys and things that we walk, we come away together and say, that shouldn't be the story. That should not be their story. But, you know, the pressure of being all things to all people instead of being honest with I'm struggling, I'm I need help, I need to be honest. I think really is what the enemy wants from our life is the shame culture of Christianity, where if you're struggling, then you're not strong and you're not you're not pleasing the Lord. It's not true. The Bible says that all of us have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. And you were talking about Paul just saying that he was the greatest of sinners. I think that when we're able to be honest with where we are, that kills the counterfeit. And you know, my story is that my dad was a pastor and he was addicted to pain medication and he was abusive at home. And then he would, you know, preach. And it really messed up my faith for a season where I was calloused, I was numb, I didn't understand the heart of God because I didn't see it modeled well in my home. And I think that it's easy to do. My dad was not an evil man, he was a man who never felt like he was safe to be honest with other leaders and other Christians. And that is what breaks my heart. Yeah. Because I wish that there was someone who would have empowered him to say, it's okay that this is the struggle. Can I get help? I wish that was the story.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, so good. Because that uh kind of does a couple different things. Number one, it starts with us, right? Like Paul being able to say, here's this apostle who has, you know, started churches, has raised the dead, done miracles, survived shipwrecking, you know, shook off the serpent. I mean, so many different things of Paul's life, but he says, I'm chief of sinners. So, number one, just being able to admit, come on, I still have a long ways to go. I'm not perfect. And then number two, creating an atmosphere where that's okay. Because what you're you're saying is that your dad wasn't authentic, he was a knockoff in some areas, great man of God, but in some other areas it was a secret sin that nobody knew. But then the culture that he was in, you couldn't be that way. That was, and so we want to foster the. I think that Paul does that so well is when Paul says, I'm chief of sinners, then it lets everyone else know. John, Mark know, it lets Luke know, it lets Jude know, it lets everybody else that, hey, we have not arrived, and by God's grace, so let's, you know, let's create an atmosphere that we're authentic, we're genuine, and for our own lives, but then for others. And I think that that changes everything, and then we stop having foo-evotain or old Lexes instead of role Lexes. I don't know what other fake things that there are out there, but let's be genuine and let's really go into these next years in these next seasons of church life, saying, God, I want everything that you would have for us. So, Rach, could you pray for us as we close?
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, Father, I just thank you that it is a lie that we cannot be on. With where we are. Lord, I thank you that it is in the place of our honesty and truth that we can only begin to go higher. Lord, I just pray that you help us as your people to be honest. Holy Spirit, will you convict us and show us places just like the psalmist David said that search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, know my anxious thoughts. See if there be any wickedness in me and lead me into your way everlasting. God, that's our prayer. Lord, I pray that you help us to be people who create safe places for other Christians. Lord, I thank you that that doesn't take us lower. It gives us space to build on firm foundations. God, that's what we want. We want health. We want to be your people. We do not want the counterfeit. We want the genuine because that's where you are moving. And I just thank you for every person watching. I pray that you'll just encourage their spirit today. You'll encourage them that you're for them and not against them. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
