Israel & Rachel Campbell "SOUP" Podcast
Welcome to Season 3 of the Campbell Soup Podcast with Israel and Rachel Campbell. We are celebrating over 10,800 downloads and counting, thanks to listeners like you. We started this podcast with a simple idea: discipleship should be more than a classroom, it should be a way of life. When Jesus walked with His disciples, the lessons did not happen behind a podium but along the road, around meals, and through conversations about real life. That is exactly what we do here.
Each episode is like sitting down to a hearty bowl of soup, warm, nourishing, and full of flavor. We talk about life, love, parenting, relationships, faith, and whatever else bubbles up along the way. Some moments will make you laugh, others might make you think, but every conversation is stirred with honesty, hope, and a little humor. So pull up a chair, grab your spoon, and join us for another season of real talk, real life, and real discipleship, one spoonful at a time.

IF YOU ARE GOING TO CANCEL SOMETHING, CANCEL THE NOISE"
The cabin was chaos, the baby was wailing, and the migraine was winning—until noise‑canceling earphones turned the whole flight into honey. That small shift became our map for a louder world: attention is a stewardship, and peace starts when we choose what gets in.
We talk candidly about tech habits, secondhand AirPods, and why unfollowing someone to guard your spirit isn’t rude—it’s wisdom. From there, we unpack three simple rhythms: turn down distraction by limiting inputs and muting notifications that hijack your mood; crowd out the junk by adding scripture, worship, service, and purpose so your appetite changes; and turn up devotion until the still, small voice can be heard again. Along the way, we name the link between doomscrolling and anxiety, laugh about car stereo volume wars, and reflect on how Jesus withdrew to quiet places to pray. We also confront a tricky truth: loud, confident, even religious voices aren’t always right. The safeguard is to test every message by the Bible and its fruit—does it lead to love, joy, and a sound mind?
If your inner voice has turned into a bully, we walk through practical ways to renew your mind, capture spirals, and replace fear with power, love, and self‑control. And when the static finally drops, guidance gets practical: Isaiah’s promise of “This is the way; walk in it” meets your calendar with small, clear next steps—text the friend, forgive quickly, say no to the thread that breeds strife, and make room to listen. Ready to cancel the noise and recover your focus? Hit play, subscribe, and share this with someone who needs a quieter channel. If it helps, leave a review—tell us where you listen and what noise you’re turning down this week.
Oh, yes, Rachel. Season three and episode two. That means we survived episode one, and we're still doing it together, and it's season two. Come on. Season three, you're right. Season three. Plus, we've got our little Campbell soup. Yes, if you can see them, don't touch them, Rachel, because I feel like they're gonna fall off if you touch them the wrong way. And then, of course, we also have uh our own little kind of Campbell soup t-shirt today.
SPEAKER_00:Special shout out to Carolyn at our church, who was on vacation overseas and saw these cute Campbell's shirt, Campbell's soup t-shirts, and knew she had to get them for us because she thought of our podcast. That's so cool. Sweet, we feel so loved by you. That was a really sweet gift.
SPEAKER_01:Sweet things. Next, we'll be getting cans of Campbell's soup for Christmas or something like that. But anyhow, going on to today's podcast, we are doing if you are going to cancel something, cancel the noise. Amen. And this is going to be a good podcast. Those of you who know us know that in the family, I am kind of the techie. And Rachel doesn't necessarily always get the new techno. You get this stuff kind of passed down for me sometimes.
SPEAKER_00:You're talking about something that just actually happened last night. I was hanging out with Silas, our youngest, and he had a new set of AirPods. And I was like, Silas, where'd you find those AirPods? He's like, Oh, dad sold me his for a hundred dollars. And immediately I knew why you sold your poor little boy a used pair of your iPods because AirPods, because you wanted the new stuff, didn't you?
SPEAKER_01:Oh, busted, busted, busted.
SPEAKER_00:Does anyone else have a husband who's addicted to No, no, no, no.
SPEAKER_01:These are good things, honey. Number one, they are the new AirPods or whatever, and it's for translating. So when we're going on the mission field speaking, I can have them in and I can hear. It'll translate what it says to me.
SPEAKER_00:I want those for my pedicures because I've been curious. Oh, that's they keep telling me that they're saying I'm pretty, but I don't know if I believe it.
SPEAKER_01:Well, you will now know. And then also these are also can be used for hearing aids, and I'm deaf in one ear, and you bought me some god-awful hearing aids a month ago for I what was it for our anniversary? Why did you give me those ear hearing aids? They're terrible.
SPEAKER_00:I know. I saw this commercial that was so convincing. And if you know Israel, he is deaf in one ear completely, 100%. And so the other ear hasn't been hearing as well now that he's 53 years old. And so I bought him a little gift, and they're ridiculous.
SPEAKER_01:They're so bad.
SPEAKER_00:We won't be doing those, but all right. I guess it's okay. He is Israel is definitely addicted to technology.
SPEAKER_01:Well, and so I mean, go into what happened. I bought some ear pods, air pods, or whatever, and they have the, you know, everybody knows that they have the noise canceling, and it's just an awesome thing. But I think Rachel has still like wired earbuds or something like that. Nothing wrong with that. Nothing wrong with her flip phone. And so what happened?
SPEAKER_00:So I we were on a flight from LA to Sydney, and it's 14 and a half hours, and I had a migraine headache because there was just this sweet little baby butt crying like the loudest vocal cords ever and just screaming for the whole flight. And so I Israel's like sound asleep, and I'm, you know, agitated and just trying to get through the whole thing. And then he wakes up and I told him, I'm just like, this is just kind of stressed out from all this loud crying. And then I but mama's out there, I've been there too. I know babies cry, so I'm not judging. But it was a lot, it was a lot. And I wanted to cry for the mom, but Israel's like, try my earphones, they're noise canceling. And I put them in, and immediately the entire atmosphere, like the crackers they served us, tasted like honey. Everything was better about this whole flight because the count the noise was gone and the entire environment changed to peace, and I slept the rest of the way. It was beautiful.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, so that is a great story. And we were talking about that, like, wow, that is so true of today. Isn't it true? Like, there is so much noise out there, and one of the spiritual things that is really important to do, it's spiritual, and it's you do it in the natural, is you we need to learn how to eliminate some of that noise that's out there. And so, like the title says, if you're gonna cancel something, cancel the noise. And a phrase that I love to just say and even acknowledge is if the devil can't destroy you, he'll distract you. And so it's so easy to get distracted by noise of the world, and so not just crying babies, but just the crying of society, the the pain of people, not that we're trying to ignore it, but then the loudness of pride and the shouting of anger and everything around us is so loud. And according to the Bible, there's so many different scriptures, whether it's Psalms 46, 10, be still and know that I am God, or in Isaiah chapter 30, verse 15, in quietness and trust is your strength. 1 Kings chapter 19, verses 11 through 12 says, Elijah heard God in the gentle whisper. And then Luke says about Jesus that he often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. He often, part of his habit was to get away from the noise. And and so that's what we want to talk about. Learning how to do it. And the other day, Rachel, you were you you are like, Can you? You I'll just tell on you, but you came to me. Really? You never do that. Oh no, I never, but you came in and you were like, I cannot believe that this person posted this. And I just like laughed, like, wow, that was really a crazy thing to post. But then I just was like, Why do you follow them? And and I and you and you said something like, you don't follow them? And I'm like, no. And I love them and I respect them and I honor them, but I don't need their noise in my life. And you were like, but I don't, you you were like so hesitant to like unfollow because you were like, maybe that would hurt them or something. And I just had no problem with it. I have no problem with putting in my spiritual airpods and putting noise counseling and just going, now in this season, I don't need to hear that noise. I need to hear God's voice more than that. And I don't really care if I hurt somebody's feeling following them or not. And to be honest, I don't think anybody even knows.
SPEAKER_00:I don't know if they know or they don't know. We'll soon find out. Because Israel literally unfollowed them on my phone. I just want to say I couldn't do it. I, you know, and it's such a good conversation to have, Israel, because the reason why I didn't want to unfollow them is because I did not want to be rude. I did not want them to feel like I did, I wasn't for them. And so I was allowing this consistent negativity and really things that weren't what God has called me to be on mission for to kind of crowd my spirit and and make me frustrated. And, you know, I think about when I was on the plane with that baby, and the baby was beautiful. The baby was sweet. There was nothing wrong with that little child, but the atmosphere that was being created because of that baby's discomfort was making me not a very good person. It was making me have wrong thoughts. It was making me agitated when I really there's I would have never been mad at a baby. And so I think that happens to us in life is that we just keep allowing things because we don't want to be rude. And so we'll allow voices, we'll allow noises, we'll allow an opinion, all of these things because we want people to feel so loved. And sometimes, you know, I I love that you read the scripture that says Jesus got away to the quiet and he prayed and he he filled himself back up. And I think that that's the point, right? That's what we're talking about. We're not talking about canceling people because we don't care, but maybe we're talking about getting away from the noise so that we can actually be useful and having pure hearts instead of bitter and agitated and saying the wrong things at the wrong time, which I can do when I'm too overcrowded. But I love, we're gonna talk about three different ways that maybe we can cancel out the wrong noise so that we can hear the right voice of God, that we could really hear what the Holy Spirit wants us to be hearing. And so we just want to talk about a couple of ways that maybe we do that on a spiritual and practical level and pray that maybe it will help you or get you on your journey to figure out, okay, God, what are the things that would work for my life? And so these are some things that have started working for us.
SPEAKER_01:And before you get into it, let me just empower you, like I empowered Rachel. We get to, it's the great thing is we get to control the volume. And so in my car, there is a difference between when I'm in the car and Rachel's in the car. I will get into the car and know who drove it last based on the volume of the music. And Rachel's trying to get me hearing aid. I'm actually more concerned about her hearing because she has it on so loud.
SPEAKER_00:I just like to feel it in my soul.
SPEAKER_01:I think that's awesome. Yes, amazing. But I can control the volume, and so I can turn it down or up. And and you know, it'll vary because of conversations. There'll be a time where it's really loud and I love it, and whatever. And then there's times I turn it down because I want to have a conversation with the person next to me or have a conversation on the phone, or maybe even have a conversation with God, and so I have to turn it down. So just before we start with these three things, just know you're empowered to control the volume of the noise that comes in from the outside.
SPEAKER_00:It's so true. And I there have been seasons when I've really had to have the quiet. Like when I was grieving and I was, I could just tell that I was tender and fragile. There were moments where I just needed to become very small and hide myself under the shadow of my Almighty God's wing. And there are seasons where the volume will change, isn't there? Yeah. Seasons we can handle certain things, and then seasons our spirit's not able to handle what it handled before. And so that's so good. Okay, so the number one thing that we wanted to talk about is turn down the distraction, how to limit inputs that aren't the right input for your season. And so for me, campaigning season definitely needs to be quieter for me because it does start affecting my spirit. It affects how I hear from God and and and even why I'm going to God. It'll it'll begin to distract me so much from mission. And I think that's the enemy's goal, right? Is the enemy's goal is not to just get us busy, but to get us off mission. And I was thinking about this turning down distraction. I think sometimes we think about what we can take away, but I maybe want to just invite you to think about what you can add to make the other things less significant. And there's this diet that's kind of a new fad right now, and it's called the crowding out method. And you might have heard about it, you might not have. I love this method. They use it for dieting with food, but they also use it for people that have addiction issues. And what they're saying is that if you're always cold turkeying things, if you're trying to quit smoking and you just take away all of the cigarettes and just you're miserable, you have a headache, you get the shakes, whatever it might be, it's actually like the percentage of going back to it after fighting through a few days is way higher than this new method that's called the crowding out method. And what they're saying is if you're trying to lose weight or if you're trying to stop smoking and it's really difficult for you to stop doing things, instead of taking things away, it's overcrowding with the right things. Starting to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, high fiber foods. And then you're not telling yourself no to the sugary foods. But once you start filling yourself with the right things, not only do you crave those things more, but you also aren't hungry and craving for the wrong things. I feel like spiritually, that's one of the best ways to turn down the volume is and to cancel, do noise canceling, is not shaming and going negative, but maybe strengthening the positive. And we all know whatever we feed grows and whatever we starve dies. And so when we think about that with the things that we're listening to and the things that we're inputting, maybe thinking about turning down the distraction by adding the things that are right, by adding an overcrowding so that you're being filled and you're not as hungry. I was thinking about this just the other week. I got so busy with ministry. There were so many people that were just having issues and needing me to be on a one-on-one personal ministering to them. And you know what? That was one of the best feeling weeks because I was so busy with doing what God's created me to do and pouring into other people and literally getting to see change in their life that I did I wasn't watching the news, I wasn't listening to negative because I was overcrowded with being on mission. I think that's a big answer to what we're talking about.
SPEAKER_01:So good, Rach. And I think that really goes into the next point. But before we get into that, I think it is really good to just be aware of like what you said, Rachel, is you win a week without listening to the news, and you're you're still alive. Oh my goodness, you're okay. And uh just we want to be aware, we're not trying to be Amish and away from society, away from culture, but we are wise with how much our spirits and our souls can handle. And there is, I believe, an incredible tie-in to anxiety and fear with news. Because what it used to be is news used to be when I was a kid, I was a newspaper deliverer. We delivered the newspaper by hand and it was paper format. You had to sit and read it. And oftentimes I would deliver to homes and they would stay wrapped up in the rubber band for three or four days. And oftentimes I'd see them in the recycle. They never even opened them. But we live in now a cycle that is social media would cut most of us get our news from social media. That's scary in itself. But so we have all of this stuff coming to us, and our soul cannot handle it. It used to be the radio show once a week was the news, your television shows, 60 minutes. That was the big news program once a week. But now it is every second, every day, notifications. This is what's happening. And, you know, news makes money by not showing you good things. News makes money by getting you afraid so that you'll keep scrolling. That is how they make money. And so we as Christ followers have to be wise with if we're gonna cancel something, cancel that noise. And I would say, like what you said, is turn down those distractions, limit the inputs, limit the social media. The scariest thing to do is at the end of the week, look at how many hours you spent on what apps, and it will convict you. And you're like, oh, I cannot believe I've spent that much time with that much noise coming in. And uh, and so I love that. And kind of going on to what you said is you can, in a sense, uh, what was the word? What's the new kind of diet? What's it called? Crowding out crowding out is, I think it is, it's not just about limiting, but then putting in. And so mine was to turn up the devotion, really make space for worship, really make space for prayer, really make space for word. And so it really goes back to what you're saying is crowd out some of those other things. Be so involved with the word that that you don't even have time for maybe news, or you're get so involved with worship, you know, that you don't even have time to do that on your commute. And so I think that that sounds like well, that's your answer for everything, Israel worship, word, and prayer. Yeah, it really is, and it's life-changing. And going back to where uh Elijah heard from God, it was the still small voice. So he turned down the volume of Ahab and Jezebel, he turned down the volume of Obadiah, of the nobody's for me. I've had to hide the other prophets. He had to even turn down his own volume because his own volume was, I'm the only one. I should just die. But it was in that still small voice. It was that moment of I'm gonna listen to God. It was that moment of prayer, it was that moment of God, what is your word saying to me today? I need a Rhema word that God speaks. And we have to not just turn down the noise of the world, but we really do have to turn up the volume of our devotion. If this really is the last days, if the world really is going to hell in a handbasket, how much more do we need God's word more than dancing with the stars? How much more do we need God's word than a tick-tock dance? How much more do we need to be in the presence of God and worship than stuck on the freeway, mad at the car in front of us, and listening to the news that is only going to get us more riled up? Are you kidding me? The government is shut down, they can't even fix the budget. It'll only increase your blood pressure and it will only increase being distracted.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, it's so true. I, you know, Israel, what you just said is so true. And the inner voice is a bully, mostly. You know, if we are not full of the word of God, if we're not constantly washing off the soot of life and um filling our souls and our spirits and our minds with the word of God and what he says about us, we are going to be believing so many lies. And I don't know if this is a girl thing, maybe it's a guy thing too. You can confirm or deny. But for me, my inner voice is constant. Yeah, it is a constant inner voice. Have you ever been like before you are confront someone, like maybe like with Israel? If I was like, I'm gonna tell Israel that this happened and that he needs to change doing that, and and my voice, I'll just build this whole entire argument in my head. And then all of a sudden I realize I'm not in a fight with Israel. I'm not arguing with my husband, who actually God has called me to be in unity with. But there is like this temptation. And if you we don't control our minds, and Paul talks so much about not being conformed to this world, but being transformed by the renewing of our mind, which just tells us our worldly thoughts and our mind, we are being force fed division, we're being force fed negativity, we're being force fed that our opinion matters, then it really does. All of these worldly thoughts that are intrusive in our life can cause our inner monologue to really take this crazy path that is against what God wants us to be doing and against our what we're called to be healthy. And so I agree with you so much. It's not only just the outside voices, but sometimes the voice that is the worst is our own voice from the inside. And I'll just say too, there's also another voice that's very loud right now, and that is religious voices. There are religious voices that are on microphones and on media and speaking and just and Israel, you said something to me a couple of days ago that was so powerful. And you said, just because a voice is loud does not mean that it's the right voice. Yeah. And I think that as God's people, our spiritual maturity comes by discerning the voice of God. And sometimes you will hear a Christian speaking and you'll feel something in your in your gut that's like, no, that's not, that does not line up with what God's word says. That does not line up with health for my own soul. And so I think we have to be people who filter everything, unfortunately. And I hate to have to say that. I hate to have to say, I wish that I could say you can trust everyone who says that they're a preacher of the word of God, but really you have to filter everything through the word of God, including us. Including us. We invite you to cancel the noise, even if it's us. Like keep your line with the work of the word of God and the Holy Spirit. Keep that stronger than anyone else's voices in your life. And if you do that, it'll keep you safe.
SPEAKER_01:And so the third thing is that you're saying that I want to say something to that because what you said was so good, and it really is true, is just because the voice is loud does not make it right. And I think that that is something that is really, really apparent right now is just because you're dogmatic about it, and just because you are bold about it, and just because you are maybe a Christian, does not make it right. The Bible says that Jesus says to his disciples, his disciples go, should we call down fire? And Jesus says to his disciples, who he has been training for three years, he says, You don't know what spirit you are of. And I just always think of that in not of, oh, going out and telling people you don't know what spirit of you are. I go about it going, God, please forgive me, because I can hang out with you and I can hang out with the Holy Spirit. And it's still human nature to get in the wrong spirit. And so again, listening to the still small voice, there are some times in the Bible that God was really, really audible, but there was also some times that God spoke in the still small voice. And so just being loud, authoritative, dogmatic doesn't make the voice right. And you know, the Bible says that Elizabeth greeted Mary, Mary, the mother of Jesus. And the Bible says, or Mary rather greeted Elizabeth. And while when she greeted, didn't say she yelled, didn't say a prophetic word, didn't say uh how bad Herod was, just her greeting made what was in Elizabeth leap in her spirit. And so what you we should be looking for is not things that we agree with, not things that make us mad, also, and things that we're like, oh yeah. No, what is is it speaking to your spirit? Those are the kind of things that I'm looking for and limiting and also encouraging in my life.
SPEAKER_00:I think that we don't want the Baldur Dash effect. I when I was in high school, my family got this game. You know, we had 10 people and two parents. I mean, is it Canadian too? I don't know. But it's called Baldur Dash. Some of you will know what it is. But basically, it was a game where there were all these words that didn't make sense. They were made up long words, and then everyone had to write out their definition of that word and they would pass it in. And then the person that it was their turn, they would read each one and they would guess which one was the true meaning of the word. So I guess it was a real word, but then everyone made fake up meanings. Oh, and I think we had to say our meaning, like we had to say it confidently. And I remember I was the queen of that game because I was so good at selling a lie. Like, you know, I just said it confidently and I used words that sounded very educated, and that was the whole point, is that this whole game was about fooling people into believing the truth about something that was not the truth. And we live in a world, there's a lot of balder dash, there's a lot of that going on, which is can be very scary. But what I'm so thankful for is that the Bible says that if we root our lives, if we anchor our life, if we anchor our mind in the word of God, we have the Bible for this very reason. And you know, we have so many pastors and teachers that are criticizing other pastors and and critiquing worship songs, but really when the word of God says to study and approve and to test the word that people are speaking, I believe that it's for this, for this very thing. It's so that we can go. Does that line up with what God's word is really saying? Or is that a bunch of balder dash? Is that somebody trying to sell me something confidently and loudly that's not true? And so we just gotta be, we have to be as Christians. It is a responsibility of ours to be aware of studying the word for ourselves and testing people's words against scripture. And, you know, we're told to do that, and that's what keeps us safe. That's what keeps us in the safety of knowing what God is doing on earth today, and also it helps us to be able to speak the word of God with truth and boldness because we're we're living by his word. And I think the goal, Israel, is the less of my personality that I can speak God's truths, the better.
SPEAKER_01:It's so true. I mean, and that is the part where maybe we talked a little bit about it last week, but like, you know, a person can be very passionate, and a person can really be heartfelt on a subject, and it still doesn't make them right because the Bible says that the heart is deceitfully wicked. And so passion, heart doesn't that doesn't mean go, well, yeah, but and that's how they feel. No, all of those things give way to, but yeah, but what does God say? Because his thoughts and his ways are higher than our ways, and so this isn't a us against them, this isn't a everyone else's, you know, we got to turn down the no, it's it's again, we're conscious of our thoughts are not his thoughts, our ways aren't his ways, and so we're careful about it with others, and we're also careful about it with us, and so I love that.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, and and Paul, when he talks about capturing our vain imaginations and making them obedient to the word of God.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Wow, that is so good, is thinking about wow, I'm afraid right now. I need to capture that spirit of fear, and then I need to take it to the word of God, and I need to make my thoughts obey what God's word says. God has not given me a spirit of fear, He has given me a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind. That's so good. So the last one is just tuning into direction. Once the noise fades, our guidance can become clear. I love Isaiah 30, 21. It says, whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, This is the way, walk in it. And I love Matthew 11, 15 says, Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear. I love these portions of scripture because the truth is hearing God is not that hard. But when we're hearing a million voices and God, it's impossible. It's confusing, it sounds quiet. And I just want to encourage you, my own personal experience and Israel and my personal experience, our personal experience together as a couple, leading a church, leading a family, leading our lives, hearing from the Lord on world issues going on. We've just learned that when we ask the Lord to speak, when we say, Holy Spirit, will you tune my ears to what the Lord wants to speak right now through the word of God? He always does. If we if we seek, we will find. If we ask, he will answer. That is a principle. And I think it's so intimidating for us sometimes to think that little old us could hear from the Almighty God, but he wants to guide you, he wants to be the voice behind you, saying, This is the way, walk you in it. And I love that portion of scripture that just says, To him that has ears to hear. Well, that verse is written to everyone with two ears, but it's the listening. Well, two ears. You have two ears. This is the perfect example, but one's not hearing. Yeah, and uh, what God is saying through that scripture is listen. If you want to hear, you will listen. And I think practicing listening, practicing being still enough long enough to allow God to say something, to to impress something, to show us. In his words, something there that is a Christian superpower, but sometimes the world is so loud we forget that we could even have ears to hear.
SPEAKER_01:And it's what we said in the very beginning: if the devil can't defeat you, he'll just try to distract you. And so, what I hope this podcast helped. We're so glad that you listened today. And maybe um take a moment after this podcast, turn off even this noise just for a moment. You know, I love what Samuel says. Speak, Lord, your servant is listening. But uh still your spirit, still the noise around you, and just really say, Holy Spirit, I am waiting to hear from you and make it part of your habit of life, is making sure that you, if you're gonna cancel anything, cancel the noise. So we're out of time.
SPEAKER_00:Father, we just declare open ears and open hearts. Lord, I pray that as your people get into your word, that you will make it life to them, that you will quicken it into their spirit in the name of Jesus.
SPEAKER_01:Amen. Share this with somebody, follow it. We had a bunch of people last week download it and uh even had one person, you know. We say, All right, do you listen to it in traffic? Do you do it on the treadmill? What do you do? Is it folding socks? And they said they do it walking their dog. They walk their dog every morning and listen to Campbell Soup Podcast. Isn't that cool? So big shout out to you guys. All dogs go to heaven.
SPEAKER_00:We love you guys.
SPEAKER_01:See you next week.
