The Quiet Strength
In a world that worships pride, Guru Amar Das Ji showed what true strength is —
not in retaliation, but in forgiveness.
His silence shook heavens louder than any scream could.

Waheguru ji ka Khalsa
Waheguru ji ki fateh
Hello friends, welcome to season 3 of sikh history sakhi podcast, I am harpreet kaur your host
· Introduction
In our last episode, we witnessed a storm — not of nature, but of human ego.
And in the center of that storm stood Guru Amar Das Ji — calm, radiant, and divinely composed. It was a horrifying and deeply emotional moment in Sikh history — a moment that tested the very spirit of humility and faith.
We discussed how an angry Bhai Datu ji consumed with jealousy, anger and ego arrived in goindwal. And then, in a moment that still makes hearts tremble, Datu Ji kicked Guru Amar Das Ji. Guru ji fell to the ground, his body trembled with pain.
But friends, what happened next… is what defines a true saint is…..and what true Gurmat means.
· Guru ji massages his foot
Now, Guru amar das ji in his divine grace and utmost compassion steadied himself And said as mentioned in sri suraj parkash:
Meaning:
My dear friends, Instead of being angry guru amar das ji did something that no one could ever imagine! He softly caressed bhai datu’s foot and apologised to him saying:
“My body has grown old and stiff from all this seva.If my hard bones hurt your foot, please forgive me. You are my Guru’s son, far higher than me —I should have welcomed you with honor.
Perhaps you did this to remind me of my mistake.”
· Guru ji’s humblesness, bhale gun amardas tere, beanta beant gun tere
My dear friends, on a personal note, I truly believe no words can ever capture the depth of Guru Amar das Ji’s humility and grace. His compassion was not just divine — it was boundless, beyond what the human heart can realise Even today, centuries later, his humility remains unmatched as mentioned in Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji on Ang 1396
bhale amaradhaas gun tere teree upamaa toh ban aavai ||1||22||
Meaning; O blessed Guru Amar Das Ji, how wondrous are your virtues. All praises belong to you!
· Bhai datu further abuses and asks to leave
Further Guru Ji then gently asked him,all the while massaging his foot
“Bhai Datu Ji, tell me, what do you wish from me?”
However, bhai Datu Ji lost in anger, eyes filled with rage, words dripping with pride not realising what he was doing demanded, “How,” he shouted, “can a man who once served in our home now sit on the Guru’s throne? This seat belongs to me“Leave this place! Stop this fake show of yours. My father only sent you here to build Goindwal, not to rule it. Go away, and never return!”
· Fareed ji
Friends…I wonder what kind of strength it takes to respond to such dishonour with love? This wasn’t weakness… this was divine strength, that only a heart filled with Naam can hold.
Even Gurbani reminds us of this eternal truth, as mentioned in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji on Ang 1381:
fareedhaa bure dhaa bhalaa kar gusaa man na haddai ||dhehee rog na lagiee palai sabh kichh pai ||78||
Meaning: Fareed ji says answer evil with goodness, don’t fill your mind with anger, doing this you shall not suffer from any disease and obtain everything.
· Reminder of bravery, of martyrs
However, my friends remember that while Sikhism teaches us compassion and silence, it also teaches us courage. As December approaches, we are reminded of our martyrs — those who stood fearlessly against injustice, so that Sikhi could shine as a light of truth in the darkest times.
· Guru ji leaves
Back to episode, Not one word came from the sangat. They sat in silent faith, hearts heavy, eyes moist — because they knew who their true Guru was. Even though, bhai datu sat there claiming to be their guru. Everyone returned to their homes.
That night, when the world slept, Guru Amar Das Ji quietly left Goindwal.
He took nothing with him — not the throne, not the followers — only his love for Waheguru.
· Emptiness in goindwal
The next morning, Guru Ji was nowhere to be found. No one knew where he went! Meanwhile, Datu Ji sat proudly upon the Guru’s seat — but the sangat’s hearts were empty.
Kirtan fell silent, and the air of Goindwal felt heavy, as if its light had faded away.
Datu Ji demanded respect and offerings, but the Sikhs knew — true light can never be claimed by ego. Their hearts ached for the Guru who had served them with folded hands.
· Bhai datu leaves is robbed
Meanwhile, Bhai Datu waited… but no one came.
He soon realized he had lost everything — the sangat, the respect, the light of Goindwal.
In greed, he gathered the offerings and set off toward Khadur sahib.
As Datu vanished into his downfall, the Sikhs, heartbroken and lost, gathered together.
They decided with one voice — to seek Baba Budha Ji’s help in finding their beloved Guru.
Friends, Waheguru ji’s justice never delays.
On the way, robbers attacked him, seizing all the stolen wealth.
One of them struck Datu on the same foot that had once kicked our Guru —
the foot swelled in pain. That foot swelled with unbearable pain, for rest of his life a divine reminder of his arrogance and that no one escapes the law of karma as mentioned in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji on ang 40
kooR kapaT kinai na paio jo beejai khaavai soi ||3||
Meaning: No one has ever found the Divine through lies or deception —
what you plant in this life is exactly what you will harvest.
· Baba budha ji
Back in Goindwal, the Sikhs, Restless and sorrowful, they searched for their beloved Guru everywhere, but He was nowhere to be found.
Lost and heartbroken, they turned to Baba Budha Ji for help.
Tune in next Tuesday to know how was Guru ji found!
And before we part, dear friends — Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Gurpurab is tomorrow!
Wishing you all a very happy and blessed gurpurab!May this sacred day remind us of His eternal teachings — to live in truth, compassion, and humility.
May His light guide your heart, your home, and your path always.
I hope this brings some peace to your hearts
