Waheguru ji ka Khalsa

Waheguru ji ki fateh

Hello friends, welcome to season 3 of sikh history sakhi podcast, I am harpreet kaur your host

Wishing you all a very blessed and joyous Vaisakhi. Friends, this sacred day marks the creation of the Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh Ji — a day of courage, identity, and complete surrender to the Divine. Vaisakhi  is a celebration and reminder for all of us — to live with faith, humility, and truth. May Guru Sahib bless your lives with love, seva, and true understanding.

Friends, sometimes in life we forget a very simple truth — that everything we have is not truly ours, it is all the Almighty’s blessing. And when we forget this, life has its own way of reminding us.Now Let us begin today’s episode,

There lived a Khatri merchant named Gango Shah, also known as Ganga Das, from the Bassi clan, in the city of Lahore. He was a successful merchant trader, well-known and respected. His work was in something called hundi

Friends, let me explain what hundi is? in simple words, think of it as the banking system of those times.

Hundi was like the banking system of those times. So instead of carrying cash from one place to another, people would give money to a trusted merchant, and it could be received somewhere else through a written note. It worked completely on trust.

It was also used for giving loans or settling payments in business. It was a way to send money, borrow money, or make payments — all without a formal bank, just through trusted people and handwritten agreements

Gangu Shah had everything — wealth, status, and a flourishing business. But my dear friends, this is the nature of the world… what rises, can also fall. As Gurbani reminds us, this world of Maya is constantly changing — profit and loss keep chasing each other. No matter how much effort we put in, sometimes things still slip away. And that is where our attachment is tested.

As such, Gangu Shah’s fortunes began to turn. He suffered heavy losses. The same business that once brought him respect now brought him pain. People who owed him money refused to return it. Family and friends who once stood by him disappeared

He went from being wealthy to being helpless.

Friends, just imagine that moment — when everything you built starts falling apart, and the people you trusted the most are no longer there. That loneliness… that helplessness… it shakes a person from within. And that is when the heart seeks Almighty as mentioned in sggs on ang 70:

Meaning:

When life becomes extremely difficult, and no one offers you any support, when even loved ones turn away and all hope seems lost — if in that moment you then come to remember the Supreme Lord God, no suffering will be able to touch you.

As such, someone told gangu shah about guru amar das ji and he went to goindwal sahib to seek medicine for his pain from the healer of all hearts.

As such someone guided Gango towards Goindwal and told him about Guru Amar Das Ji — the one who heals not just the body, but the heart. The one who brings true peace.

With a heavy heart and a broken spirit, he made his way to Goindwal Sahib… not as a wealthy merchant anymore, but as a seeker. As per the rule, he first had Langar and then went to meet Guru ji.

Friends, sometimes it is only when everything falls apart… that our true journey begins.

Gangu Shah reached Guru Ji and fell at His feet. With tears in his eyes, he cried out, “Save me, Lord… save me.”

Gangu shah went to meet guru amar das ji and said as mentioned in sri suraj parkash:

Meaning- gangu shah broke down and kept his head at guru ji’s feet, crying he just said- save me lord, save me!

Guru Amar Das Ji gently asked him, as mentioned in sri suraj parkash:

Meaning- How are you, dear Gango?

“How are you, dear Gango?” And in that moment of love, Gangu opened his heart and shared all his pain.

Guru Amar das ji heard everything with compassion and then guided him as mentioned in sri suraj parkash:

Meaning: Go to Delhi. Start your life again. Build your home, rebuild your business… but remember — live by the Guru’s teachings. Stay humble, serve others, and always keep your values with you.”

Gangu Shah followed Guru Ji’s words with full faith. He went to Delhi and started his work again from zero.

Now friends, we all know… starting again is not easy. Building something from nothing can take years. It tests your patience, your faith, your strength.

However, when Almighty’s grace is with you… things move differently.

As Gangu Shah had just begun his work, a huge opportunity came his way. A nawab of Lahore needed a hundi — a demand draft of one lakh mohrs. But no merchant in Delhi was ready to take such a big responsibility.

As such Nawab reached Gangu, and he stepped forward.

And my dear friends, this was not just business… this was faith in the Guru’s blessing.

Gango successfully fulfilled the request. People were amazed. Slowly, trust in him grew again. His name began to rise once more in the markets.

Within a short time, by the Guru’s grace, Gangu Shah became wealthy again — even more respected than before.

But remember… this was not just success.

Slowly, without realizing it, Gangu began to change. The same man who once came to the Guru in tears now started believing that everything he had was because of his own effort. He forgot that all of it was given by the Divine.

Friends, isn’t this so true for us as well? In difficult times, we remember Waheguru… but when life starts going well, we begin to rely on ourselves. Just as we discussed in Pauri 33, we think we have power, but everything flows from Hukam.

And now, a small moment was about to come in Gangu Shah’s life — a simple situation, but one that would reveal his heart. A test not of his wealth, but of his humility.

Will he remember the Guru… or will pride take over?
