What makes a great man great?

Now that the Fourth of July is here, I am pondering the founding fathers. I recently saw a documentary on Thomas Jefferson by Ken Burns on PBS. I think he must be my favorite one of them. He had such a zest for living and an intellectual curiosity. He loved beauty, nature, and most of all food. He introduced America to macaroni, ice cream, and all sorts of vegetables.
