SPEAKER_02

Hey, how are you guys doing this evening? So we're back to our um balling on the budget, budget waterfowling. And this one we have a real interesting topic, or um, I guess categories we could say. Uh, you know hunting as um, what will we call it? Team hunting is what we you know, we're gonna call this episode. And and kind of being able to um having you know a you know a group of guys that share the you know, I almost like share the burden. And there's not really no burden on waterfowl hunting, unless you're talking to our wives and they see our bank accounts. But um, you know, kind of share the responsibilities without one guy is buying all the D cores or whatnot. And um the kind of different roles and the I guess roles and like team hunting that kind of me and Chris have seen in um the last couple years that we've been hunting together and you know, we're hunting with buddies and whatnot.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I mean, I think uh like you said, it's not really a burden. It's I honestly I like that part of it just because everybody kind of has their role. I think it just goes back to Joe, me and you going being used to being in a platoon squad or even a team, understanding what the objective is uh objective is and what our jobs are in that in that team. But um Joe kind of went went ahead and broke it down, um kind of just different roles that there are there is. Um and again, this is you could play with these roles. I mean, just by as far as like your knowledge base and your buddies' knowledge base.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And um, like I said, I broke it down like to kind of a five different people you see in in a group. And because you know, when we were hunting in groups, you know, we used to were just um running around the on public land together. You know, there was about four or five of us. There was me, you, Gilbert, uh, Elliot, um, and then we'd have some you know some guys that would you know come and go while they're here before they'd do PCS or leave. But I guess uh we'll start with my with my with our number one guy number one in the in the hunting group. And um and this doesn't he doesn't have to be the sole person, then this could be multiple people kind of uh pitching in and stuff, but the decoy guy. Um and me and you, you know, we've kind of both been the decoy guy in our groups the last couple years, just because gear that we've had over the years, the gear we collected, trying out some gear for sponsors. But you know, you have the decoy the decoy guy. And I mean if you know three, four or five guys are hunting together, uh I mean, there's multiple ways you could do this. You know, there's a guy that if you know you have a friend who's already um already established hunter, he might have moved somewhere, or or he already had the gear or the decoys from uh family members or whatnot, or find them on like a consignment sale.

SPEAKER_01

But um, you know, there I mean yeah, I mean go ahead and like so we have the decoy guy. Go ahead and just break down like the the kind of kind of like the different groups you I guess categories you kind of have. And again, this is just something that we've kind of gone and done that's helped us as buddy hunting. And you can adjust this however you want.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so the the for all the five guys categories we have is the decoy guy, you know, the boat guy, the dog guy. There's always that one guy. I call him the the the guy who has the lease, or he's real good at getting permission on uh private land from the other guys, or he's a scout, other or he's also the guy that scouts and knows a spot on public land. And the fifth guy is all his all of our favorites is a good time charlie. Yeah, yeah. The guy that um hey, he's a guy that will cook at the camp, or he's cooking in the blind for you guys. He's the guy that after the hunt, he's the one that buys lunches, or hey, he's a you know, he might not be able to uh afford or have the um the time to go get some stuff, but he's a guy who's hey, he's hey, I'll put the blind out, or I'll get there early. Um, you know, he's a good you know, the harder working guy, and yeah, he's also the guy that hey man, um I kind of tagged along for a good time, and um I'll pitch him some gas money type of guy.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and I mean, and we'll go through each and every one of these categories, kind of just want to break it down just so like people understand like you know, what the next is, but I mean let's get into the decoy guy, right? We kind of I know me and you've been fortunate enough with decoys, you more than me. I mean, I have you guys seen this guy garage this guy's garage, it's insane. I I think he's selling decoys like every year and get new ones.

SPEAKER_02

I wish my wife was wishing I would sell decoys. But um, yeah, there's kind of there's kind of neat, there's there's kind of um when I say with a decoy guy, there's kind of like two ways of looking at this, right? You know, this is this is kind of based off of my mine and yours more of the groups that we had. Um but yeah, there is a decoy guy. And you know, he's the guy that you know you may be you may not need, you know, on public land, me and you in some of the public marches or the lakes we're running. We're running only running no more than two, three dozen decoys tops with some with some motion. So I mean you don't need huge, you know, five, six dozen spreads, but um, you know, he's a guy that, hey man, I was able to buy a couple decoys or whatnot. And that's that's kind of his pitching.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's not even just that, too. It's I mean, you gotta think everybody has motion's expensive, you know. Like I may have some uh some um like agitators, and then Joe might want more agitators in his spread for that good morning. Like, hey man, bring your agitators, or hey, bring your spinning wing, or hey, bring your rippler, or whatever the case may be, bring your swimmer, you know. We might we might switch it up. So it's not even just that. I mean, just if you you know, being some of the stuff is expensive, but when you can make your decoy spread come alive, it definitely makes a game change, it's definitely different, makes it makes it uh it's a game changer for sure.

SPEAKER_02

And when you are hunting in groups like that, you know, there might not be just one designated decoy guy. You know, if if if you think about it, if every guy here, you know, you know, if you have a group of dudes that are constantly hunting together, and you know everyone picks up a dozen decoys, you know, Chris got the wood ducks, I got mallards, uh, our buddy Elliot got the pintails, Gilbert buys, uh Spoonbills and Teal. And you know, for about at that point, for about a hundred, 150 bucks, you guys have a you know, a five-six dozen spread. Um you know, so you know, I know we're talking about the decoy guy, but I mean you can spread it out. That's more than you spread it out. Or a oh you know, another buddy of ours. Hey, I understand that you guys got the decoys, uh all the floaters. Hey man, but um I'll pick up two or three spinning wings and you know two or three spinning wings, and I don't know if you guys look at some of these spinning wing decoys lately. Some are prepared, you know, you're looking at $200 for just one.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's crazy.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. So I mean, that's you know, on the decoys, that's how you could break it down, but yeah, uh definitely, you know, there is some guy like I I would probably be in our friend group the decoy guy. Um because I have a you know, I have enough decoys to to put out on two farms. So yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But what would you say as far as the decoy guy? Because typically you have the guy, and uh just from our experiment, our experiment, our experience, you have the guy that has more of the um uh experience as far as like setting decoys and stuff, and everybody has their own opinions. We all have our own opinions. Uh Joe's never uh I mean, we kind of like I think me and you kind of have the same idea, but typically that guy, and I would say this is just for me, and maybe you can caveat, maybe it's not, but some majority of the time the guy who brings the decoys is usually the guy who's been more experienced because he's setting out the decoys. And I don't want to say more experienced, but knows the area better. So, like when I go to Louisiana and I'm hunting, you know, with Joe and his pay and his areas, you know, it's like, hey, let him put the decoys that he needs to put because you know he knows how the ducks are working here or he knows what they're gonna do today just because he's seen patterns and stuff.

SPEAKER_02

So I you I I've never had that issue with any of the groups that I've ever hunted. Um where you know I've never been, you know, even that even when you come, we kind of we we kind of come up with a game plan before, and you know, my like I like to think that my way is not always right until the deposits are tangled and it's two in the morning.

SPEAKER_01

I'm getting no, and but uh we've had those conversations, like you like you said, we game plan and you told me, what do you think, man? Should we take this much? And you know, usually I'm asking, like, well, what'd you see the day before? What have you seen is like, oh, have you seen that? Let's do it, like make it a big spread. Let's just you know, you know, if it honestly it works for us, but it's good to have somebody with you kind of like because that let's be real, it's kind of like a decision, like, man, it could either make or break the hunt. And you and I guess my thing is like we can always take decoys away. You know what I mean? Like we can't.

SPEAKER_02

I think for me, some guys are on team hunting like that. Uh, I think we overthink, and I've seen people and I've been part, I guess, of another hunting group that um I think guys overthink the decoy spread. Yeah, and that's just not at two in the morning, three in the morning, four in the morning. That for me is not an argument or a disagreement that I'm willing to die on. I mean, it's not it takes what 10 minutes to move decoys around it. And then even with last hunting, how many times have you seen me? You're like, hey man, this this one ain't working. Let's move decoys around a little bit. Yeah, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes a flop will you know spin on one, you know, one way decoys are set up, and then next two or three flocks don't even want nothing to do with it, they'll flare off them. You gotta kind of move them again. So, yeah, for me, the the decoy thing is um the setup portion. I kind of you know, I I think when it comes to team hunting, everyone should have their opinion. Everyone's opinion is valid, especially if you have a group of guys who are kind of hunting the the same area the whole time. Um yeah, I don't think on that one, it's um that to me, that's just not a um not something that I want to say, not a disagreement that I want to have a full morning on public.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and I I don't think it's much of a I mean, because we never got that where it's a disagreement, right? Because I mean, I think I guess my thought process is like, man, you know, people usually like so for instance, like uh when I've taken people hunting, like, hey man, don't worry about it, I'll I'll usually bring my decoys or hey, you if you have like I don't know, another spinning wing that helps, right? Because we kind of have that. You're like, and which I understand you have you have decoys, so there's no reason for me to bring decoys most of the time when I hunt with you. So usually I might bring maybe a couple wood ducks or something. If you want more wood ducks, um, I think that's the only thing I've really brought, but usually it's a spinning wing, usually something with motion because motion, I mean, it can be expensive.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and usually like you know, being the on some instances, yeah, I'm gonna be the decoy guy, and then some on some days I won't. Um and like I said, you perfect example, me and you both have kids, and we both we both really enjoy hunting with our kids. For me, when I have guys, like I have you know, guys are gonna come down here and hunt with me and with family and whatnot. Traveling um with waterfowl hunting gear, when you're looking at you know, kids' clothes, luggage, the guns, the waiters. I know that I don't want to put an extra burden of you how to travel with yeah, two, two, that's a space that you don't and you have a dog just now to think about. And there's you know, for so for me, for sometimes I'm like, hey, you know, don't worry about decoys or don't worry about if you guys are coming out of the state or coming from across the state, uh, save that space for more comfort items or something else. Uh, I'll have it. So I mean, and there's sometimes that's the thing and kind of uh the thing about, you know, when you're having guys come and hunting from other areas. Now, when I'm gonna go hunt with you, maybe that you know, in Louisiana, I'm the decoy guy. When you when you run we're hunting with you, you're the decoy guy. I'm bringing something. I might bring that's when I bring all my motion decoys. Yeah, kind of give yours less stress and you wear and tear on it. And you know, most of the time spinning wings and mojo uh flocca flickers take up less space than you know, three dozen decoys.

SPEAKER_01

And then we'll talk about yeah, talking about flocca flickers. I gotta I think when two of them, three of mine went down, man. Hey, I've I've had them for like five years and I put them never cleaned them, but I gotta figure them out. I think it's just the motor, but anyways. Yeah, yeah, probably just thinking out loud. But man, I love those things. If you never use a flocka flicker to put in between decoys, it really doesn't make sense.

SPEAKER_02

And then when you go to Arkansas, we both bring stuff. So, you know, and that's where A, you know, if you're a group of you guys or you know, five of you guys are going to Kansas, Arkansas, uh, Missouri, and you guys are gonna do run some um run on private or you're gonna run a gun on some public land, instead of dealing with one guy being all the decoy guy, a if everyone brings a dozen decoys, there's five of us or four of us, that's four or five, you know, dozen decoys. So that's plenty enough to hunt on. That's more than enough to hunt over.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I mean, so like I said, decoys to me are always it's always the most cumbersome, and it's always it is kind of like an investment. So I mean, if there is a guy that I already have it, then you know, try to be the other guy that pitches in somewhere else, you know. And there's and you know, we might add a different guy onto this. You know, one guy's a decoy guy, then you become this the motion guy. Yeah, because it was yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I mean, yeah, I mean, I and again, you can always play with all this stuff, but no, I agree. I think um uh it it becomes it there's it's really easy to overthink this when it comes to this, but man, it's just all about just going out there and having fun.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And then I mean, guy number two, you used to be the guy number two.

SPEAKER_00

Uh the jerk string? Oh I wasn't the jerk string guy.

SPEAKER_02

Oh my god. The jerkstwing, yeah. You graduated from there. You went from the jerk string to the whistle. Now I'll I'll let you call. Yeah, now you're a member of society.

SPEAKER_01

But um, yeah, I wasn't I was the boat guy. I mean, you you had a dope too. Yeah, don't remind me. But yeah, I mean, if you have a buddy that has a boat and that's all he's including, make him your buddy, because man, it makes it it, it makes it uh I I felt when I had that boat, I had free range to everything when it comes to like even and I'm gonna say this, even when it comes to like beaver slews where the boat may not go, take a couple kayaks, drop them there at the beaver slough across the lake if you need to go that far and boom, get get back where you need to get back.

SPEAKER_02

But yeah, but the boat guy, that's the I mean, let's be let's be let's be honest. I mean, and you had like I said, yeah, nice more eagle boat. Uh let's be honest, boats are not cheap. The maintenance on them are not cheap, and the gas room is not cheap. So, I mean, if if you're the boat guy and you have another guy that you know that has decoys, even though you have your own decoys or whatnot, you know, don't think that you're not control I mean the boat guy's a contributor. Uh yeah, and you start looking at any of these, you know, ones that we kind of uh are are breaking them down as yeah, they are you know, there's probably a little more things that we could have done, but these are guy, I mean they're the contributors, I mean, to the hunt. Uh so I mean, instead of every dude in in the group, if you guys know you're always gonna hunt together or whatnot, if a guy already has a boat and he kind of repurposes a John boat into a duff boat, or he said, you know, you have some guys that you know he's in the military, he got that big bonus, and then you know, in uh in Iraq or Afghanistan now against Iran here pretty soon. Uh, and he can think he's getting that tax-free bonus.

SPEAKER_01

Uh yeah, that's what he got me.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Then you wanna you wanna go to war and not go to jail?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. You want to re- you want to re-enlist $20,000 bonus in Afghanistan? Yeah, what's that like?

SPEAKER_02

Tax tax exempt, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So that dude's a huge contributor. I mean, there was a couple hunts, and if Chris didn't bring the war eagle up here, we would we just couldn't have gotten to the the the parts of the marsh. There's no, I mean, we've we'd have been kayaking for like uh five, six hours. And so I mean, that is a real big contributor. Uh then you know, so you'll you have a guy that by you know has a boat, you have another dude that has three dozen decoys. I mean, right, you know, right there, that's gonna put a you know, huge hunt in, a great hunt in. And it's like the boat guy, you know, he might not need to be A focusing on purchasing decoys because now he buys a boat, then he goes buys a nice pop up blind for that boat. You know, yeah, that's another couple, you know, four or five hundred dollars. And even if you make one, you know, a dy one cheap, you're still spending 80 to 100 bucks, maybe if not more, because you know, inflation now materials are more expensive. So you know, if you have a guy with a boat, now you have guys with with decoys, you know, just those two guys right there, that's a that's a great hunt. And then they're sharing the I can I keep that one say the burden of it, because there's no burden of it, but that they're sharing the responsibility and the cause effect of waterfowl. Um and you know, just right there is gonna keep it down.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, 100%.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, as a boat guy, as a former boat guy, what was your biggest case you think, besides buying the boat?

SPEAKER_01

The blind. It was probably it was probably the blind. I mean, even the whole change on the motor wasn't that much. I mean, the blind. Um, so I did just for the viewers, so I did a DIY scissor blind. It was great, did amazing. Um, had that for about a year and a half, and then the following year I was like, you know what, forget it. I was uh uh I said I went ahead and got that Drake. Um I just lost my train of thought.

SPEAKER_02

The uh Gilly. It's uh Gilly and Gilly Bubba.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but it I forgot what it was, but it comes in different levels. Um so I got that one, and that one it was amazing because it was you could adjust it on the phone. I did a DIY scissor blind. There's nothing wrong with it, but it was a little bit, I mean, it was janky, but it worked. It did the job.

SPEAKER_02

So heck, we even we even looked up one time we put panel blinds on the boat.

SPEAKER_01

So we yeah, we even done plant panel blind. So um, but I would say the blind. I mean, other than that, man, I mean, everything else was it was fine. I I got mine, actually I got mine on a deal because it was the whole COVID thing and they couldn't get motors and stuff. So I had a I bought my motor uh secondhand and I mean it was fine. So but yeah, if you have a boat guy, man, that's a big thing. And I think, yeah. That's why I think uh actually me and Kristen were talking because she wants to get she my my wife uh is a big is a duck hunter now. Um so she came over dark siding or bright side, or I don't know how to raise it. But um um she's a big duck hunter now, and she's she's a big fish and she likes fishing a lot. Um so she wants, we're we're talking about just getting another, uh probably not getting a war eagle, a little bit more expensive, a part getting like a grizzly. Yeah, a little bit cheaper, but I mean they work fine. Um, I mean, there you can still do the same thing with War Eagle. I mean, I maybe quality is different. I'm not again, I'm not professional. I don't know metals, um, just a dumb grunt that got told what to do.

SPEAKER_02

So yeah. But for for our next position, and this guy is, you are this guy now. The dog guy.

SPEAKER_00

Dog guy, yes.

SPEAKER_02

The dog guy, I will say there's two parts of the dog guy. And that uh the the dog guys are kind of the guys that I'm a little bit hard on. Um but these dogs are once again, they're not cheap. Um you know, so you're looking at an average cost of a trained duck dog is about 10 grand.

SPEAKER_01

Well, you're buying the dog, then the training, training, the food they eat, because like people understand these dogs are athletes, so you're not buying no Walmart. I hope you're not. Walmart, um, and nothing against Walmart. We shop Walmart all the time, but some, you know, dollar, $3 general dog food for your dog, I hope not. So for instance, my dog, uh, we get him uh Puruner Pro Plan. I put uh two tablespoons of uh coconut oil and uh a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and water, and I mix it, and that's what he eats. So he's uh he's kind of spoiled.

SPEAKER_02

He's the H E Virt dog.

SPEAKER_01

So um he's uh yeah, so there is a lot to it. And this is what I will say about your dog guy. If you have a dog guy, like I understand this guy has to do, like I have to do stuff with uh can't, I don't do it a lot. I mean, I do it once a week, but once they get to a certain level, I mean they they be they're amazing. Um there is some things, obstacles you guys have to follow. But I understand, like um I think it can be stressful for a dog guy because you're you're hoping he's like your little boy, you're hoping he performs, you know? And he doesn't perform. That's that's kind of rough when I was like, oh bro, what happened? And some guys like, oh, the dog sucks, or some, and some guys like, man, I I can fix this or figure it out.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Um I'll give you an example. I'll give you an example just for the viewers. My dog. Any dead dog, any anything dead, he'll pick up. He got bitch slapped. I'm sorry, I'll quite put that. He got slapped by a specklebelly, and he said, Nah, homie, I'm not picking up that speckle belly. This specklebelly slapped the crap, had him in his mouth, slapped the crap out of him, dropped him, said, Nope, I'm not doing that. But I had uh I had to have some fun with him, talked to a buddy of mine and trained him. He said, Hey man, you just gotta and talk to people there. I mean, this this is another thing too about the waterfowl community. There was other dog people in our blind, like, hey, you just gotta get, he just has to be aggressive with it. And you gotta, you gotta, you gotta get him um wanting it to, yeah, acclimated to it. So we uh actually we got a couple ducks and holy Peter's not listening, but I mean he was uh we got some pigeons too, and he I was chasing it with the they were alive and you know getting him to get it. So it's a it's a little stuff, but but um you gotta do these stuffs just for at the end of the day, sometimes I mean uh your ancestors is how they fed their families, so yeah, and even then man's best friend.

SPEAKER_02

Guys have to realize that some sometimes just like us, we we wake up, don't want, don't want to go to work some days. Some dogs don't want to do the same thing. But with a dog guy, he is adding super amount, I mean, he's adding a lot of value to the money. Um, and on the conservation side, nine times out of ten, those dog guys on a good trained dog. Um I was saying Chris, you know, even with the mishap with the specula that day, we didn't lose any ducks in two days. Everything we shot were before you. Um so you know, don't forget that a that how much time and effort and money and a lot of time is putting that dog. So when God, you know, if you are bringing it a good dog to the hunt, that you know, you're bringing way more value than you know than you think. So I mean and even for guys are like, oh man, all he does, he just has a dog. Well, there's a flip side to that that you're not seeing, you're not seeing the cost. One, you didn't see the cost of that dog, not seeing the work, work and all that, you know, just everything that he put in that dog just for you know him to bring it to to our friend group and hunt with it. And so you don't have to go chase that duck, duck, yeah, and um retrieve your birds as well as his. Um so I mean, you just have it right there, uh a duck guy, I mean the decoy guy, the bulk on the dog guy. I mean, you start adding all that up, and I mean you're right right there, you're probably well over 50 grand into duck hunting.

SPEAKER_00

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Saved 100 saved for three people. Um and like I said, doesn't need you know that has nothing to say that you'll be, you know, we're gonna go hunt somewhere else, and you know, the the boat guy doesn't need to bring a boat, and now he's the decoy guy. You know, he's adding his decoys where he's like, Hey, Chris, you always have the decoys guy, we're about to go hunt a walk in marsh, we only my boat, I'll bring all the motion, you know. So it's it's just being able to share the responsibilities and the the financial uh stuff with you know with your hunting group. And like I said, uh when we started this podcast series, about almost going on a year now, um, on hunting on a budget, it was because you know, we had a friend and we talked about we talked about is hunting being a rich man sport and can you not do it? Uh you know, is is the cost too much for the normal guy? So we really wanted to start this podcast series, and you know, we're getting towards the end of it, you know, with hunting on a budget. And we really thought, you know, this one our hardest we team hunt all the time. We always hunt with buddies, and we there was you know, there was always a core group of us that hunted, and how you know this kind of helped us on keeping all costs down for all of us. Like, you know, a uh Chris bought some D some spinning decoys on sale or some motion decoys. Chris really likes motion decoys. And then so I went and I got me an A-frame, you know, and then that's how we added to you know to the hunt. Uh so it's not, you know, Chris has his A-frame, his decoys, we know Joe has okay, we're not all hunting a lot of stuff together, but if you can start piecemealing together with a group, you know, you're you know, you're cutting that that that that cost and you're cutting it down a lot to now you can focus on shotgun, duck calls, waiters, uh, ammunition. Heck, honey, if you can go hunt out of state, now you gotta you know the cost of a license. But yeah, you know, and I think the duck guy, the duck guy to me is always like the uh don't get us wrong, he's the mother of the hunt, right? Because he's always kind of like the um, he has his dogs, the dog kind of brings the software slide out of people.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So yeah. So even you know, showing appreciation to the dog, bring the dog an extra biscuit in the morning if the you know if that's a thing, or bring him a nice honey button.

SPEAKER_01

There is we have buddies that feed their dogs on your buttons.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, we do. Or some jerky or hey, man, bring a few dog treats up, you know, when the dog makes a good uh retrieve, you know, show the appreciation to the you know to your buddy and uh and to the uh the dog.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But number four we have is this guy is a salesman at the car dealers, you know, he's you know, he's a talker, he's a smooth talker of the group. Number four is I call him the the guy that has the lease, or the guy that just is really good at getting permission on other people's land. And this guy could also be the guy for the public who doing shirt public, can also be the scout guy, the guy that likes it likes to scout. Maybe his work, his work schedules allows him to go scout and be the you know get glass time to find out where these birds are. And uh, you know, for some of it, you know, people think, well, if he's just you know, the lease, you know, being the lease dude or the having the least, yes, there is an upfront uh cost that comes with that. And that cost could you know can be 10 grand plus. I mean, some of these leases that we are we are getting, they're expensive, they're not cheap. Uh leases are not cheap, and they're you know, and some and sometimes they're a gamble, and every year season they can be a gamble. Um yeah, I've had I've had you know consistent leases where I've killed on it consistently. One year the weather's a certain way or something happens, and those, you know, you know, they're not that great as seasons on that lease, and you kind of have to suck it up and you know kind of uh have to adapt your hunting to that. Maybe sometimes the time you hunt or whatnot on it or vary the pressure on it. But for the guys that you know aren't putting up the big money for the lease or putting the lease up up front, um don't take for granted the guy that goes and gets permission or he's a scout and goes get scouting on uh public land. There's a cost and a wear and tear on that. You know, he can have his own boat. He might it might not be a duck boat, but it's a boat that he gets out and drives up and down the lake and all that to scout or the marsh. He wear and tear his truck on gas money on for his truck and for his um uh boat. And you know, he's doing you know sometimes the best scout guys, you know, yeah, they might have a looser work schedule. You know, they're the 24 on, 24 off guys, or the or the 7-4 guy or the 3-4 guys, or the you know, the guys with the with the 10, or they call it Canadian work ships, and you know, so they have the the means and the time available to go do all the scouting, or don't we do the awkward hey you see you see you have some duck space on your property and your thought, you know, you think you let us go go hunt on them? You know, yeah, oh get off your product before you shoot me, okay. We're gonna, you know, so don't take that guy for granted. Uh you know, there's still a cost with that. I mean, fuel's expensive, it's time. Um, you know, so you know, sometimes, hey, that might, you know, it might not be the most glorious position, right? Or member of the team, but it's sometimes it's it's the most necessary one. And if that guy can get permission on a hunt, just a jam up uh field, or you know, he might make your year, you know, hey, you guys got two days of hunting. It's Friday or Friday, Saturday, be off by Sunday. You know, that he might that one weekend might make the whole make might make the whole season.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, absolutely. I think if you can have a guy who can get you leases, I mean, I'd be honest, like I it it's rough sometimes, especially I don't know what area you you live in, but sometimes private land is the best hunting. I mean, um, I know here in Texas, 90% of Texas is uh privately owned. So some of these tanks, the best tanks owned by somebody. So yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So I guess I mean we all know when it comes to the leases, there is an upfront cost. Um, so I mean, take care of your guys with the lease. And it and you know what now, even now with me nowadays, getting leases, it gets hard trying to find them or keep them, or not, you know, not having someone else come in and overbid you and you know, oh, lease them from underneath you. So, you know, that's not you know, the lease guy's not um uh it's not a very glorified job, and sometimes it can be uh you know a big chunk of change. So you know, if a guy can't afford the lease, you know, help him out with decoys or and even if he has decoys and you guys are hunting together and he's like, hey man, I got the lease, I just want you to hunt with Militime. Be, you know, if you're the decoy guy on the plug, then hey man, let me kick you about three dozen decoys I put out there. Because um, you know, I have some really good friends that I love a lot, but they sure love shooting some of my decoys sometimes. So, you know, so you know, kind of pitch in there so he, you know, take some of the wear and tear off of his equipment.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, for sure.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And then uh we have what we like to call the last one, right? Our number five guy, uh, the good time Charlie. And we've all been the good time Charlie. Um you know, maybe his funding is a little bit different than ever when he can't afford to have you know to get some of the big equipment or lease or a boat or the decoys, or he's in the he's just in a different stage of life where he, hey, I'm gonna hunt with you guys and I want to hunt in the group, but I'm I can only maybe do four or five hunts a year, um, you know, three or four weekends. But I mean, the good if the good time, if you're the good time Charlie, or you have the good time charlie, I mean, some of the that's the guy that cooks in the blind, or he's cooking at the camp. Uh he's buying lunch, you know, he's the guy that pitches in the gas, he's the you know the hardworking dude. Uh, I mean, even you know, the good time child, or a lot of times he's the funniest dude in the blind. He's a dude that's the uh that's keeping it lively. Uh that's also a very good um uh what do you call it? Uh a position that we a lot of times we overlook. I mean, and sometimes it could be, you know, he's a guy that hey man, the scout guy or the or the permission guy or the lease guy. Hey, he needs to go um we need to go pump some um some pits. Hey, hey, hey, buddy, I ain't got nothing to do this weekend. I'll I'm gonna he's the first guy out there helping. Or hey, we're all at work, we want to hunt this weekend, open days coming up, everyone's slammed. Uh his work's handled a little different than everyone else's. I'll be out there, I'll hey, don't worry, guys, I I'll brush the blinds.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So I mean, usually your your good time charts are the bet are the better cooks, too. The funnier better cook cook cook to have the good cook.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's always good to have somebody who can kind of lighten up the mood sometimes too, because waking up in the morning, you're like, oh. So I think um, I mean, I especially somebody who can cook, Jason. But uh I mean, if you can bring somebody who can cook even on the spot, and you're not like you know, overthinking the cooking. I mean, that that that's amazing. And being able from straight from uh field to table, I mean that that's that that that um that's definitely that definitely hits different as far as being uh outdoorsman, like, hey, look, we got this, we got this together, now we're eating it on the table.

SPEAKER_02

So yeah. But I mean, and like I said, and there's you know, there's there is some overlooked positions like yo, with the then I'd like to add a guy with the boat guy, the guy that has a side-by-side, you know, he might be you know your lease buddy, and he might, you know, he might not have decoys or spinning wings, but you know, he paid his you know, his you know, he helped you bring the cost down from the lease, but he's a guy with a side-by-side, and he has a side-by-side. Um, you know, and I I have a buddy that I hunt I hung with a lot. Uh you know, my side-by-side a few years ago took a crap out of me, and um, it was just unrepairable, and I Joe just didn't want to deal with that anymore. I had to get rid of it. You know, there's been the last few seasons without a side-by-side. And I've had um buddies that ain't done where we got you. Uh and that is a huge help, especially when it comes, you know, getting getting to the blind of back. You know, yeah, but you know, it's not a problem. Everyone can walk it, and we spent most of our lives walking. But when you when it comes time to put decoys out in the beginning of the season and bring them back and at the end of the season, having a buddy with that side by side is um it makes a difference than dragging them back, you know, it mealing them in with a sled.

SPEAKER_01

Well, you added one. I kind of want to add one. You're you're a calling guy, somebody who's a calling enthusiast. I think just what waterfowl hunting in period. Like, I don't care who you are. Uh most people that I've heard, like, oh, calling doesn't make a difference, just because you suck at it. But um and I'm gonna be honest because I'm the guy that sucks at it, you know, the majority of the time. But I mean, I've gotten better. But I think I mean I've seen it firsthand. Calling makes a difference. If you can call, especially here in here in um, you know, below the Mason Dixie line, I mean, these they're hearing duck calls all the way up to from Alaska, you know what I mean? And they don't even have to call. We we have buddies up in the north, and they're like, yeah, I might blow once or twice, but they're they're just dropping in. It's just, I mean, birds get educated, they're not dumb. So I think if you have a calling guy who likes to do this, likes to have fun, I mean, that that makes a big difference. And they even having buddies that kind of like making your spread come alive. He's calling, he's calling, he's blowing the whistle, whatever the case may be. So um, I think that definitely makes a game changer. So having a buddy that it is uh a little bit more passionate about that, then yeah, I think that that makes your hunt that much better. I think if you can, it's just it's just like you said your whole pie thing, if you can distinguish yourself different from everybody else, and you your spread is more alive, then it's more real for the ducks, then you get your success is gonna be better.

SPEAKER_02

So yeah. Yeah, yeah, definitely, and when you're not making it stressful or or putting everything on one guy that he's a guy that has all the decoys, he has to drag it, you know, he's the guy that has to load his truck. Because I'll tell you, the older I get, the less I like loading my truck up and I'm like, golly, the truck loaded is like oh you're not wrong.

SPEAKER_01

That's why that's why we have kids.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, don't lose the one of them. Some of them trying to graduate off.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, I'm about to lose one. Yeah, I got I got well, I you got another one coming as well. Yeah, you got one more. I got I still got two more about that they can do do some work.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. So I mean, that's the thing. And uh I can say when we started this, um we wanted this to help guys you know think about how to keep the cost down of water fountain hunting in general. And like I said, for the views, I kind of hope that you know this this uh this is helping. But I do want to say, Chris, for us here in the Louisiana and Texas, we're 83 days away from uh hunting.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, man, I was just gonna talk to you offline, man. What are we doing with teal hunting? And then I I was just even thinking, it's like now I have a reason to go down there past Austin, go hunt by uh get all them teal down there.

SPEAKER_02

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_01

El Campos you got El Campos down there, you got, I mean, she's only a couple maybe two two hours away from two, three hours from Matagorda Bay, two hours, I think. Yeah. So uh if that. So yeah. Definitely, definitely getting do some hunts down there this season. So I mean Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. For the guys who are coming up, I mean, or you know, the guys we're hearing this are just getting in, or now guys that are kind of linking up with other boys of hunt. Man, we're 83 days and some in some places even or even sweeter.

SPEAKER_01

You got whistle ducks now, right? You can hunt during tail season.

SPEAKER_02

No, we can't hunt during tail season. I thought that's what they passed. No, they have their own eight-day season. Oh, that's what it was. And if that's man, let's chat about that a little bit. We got some time on here. Um, so I kind of have two different feelings about that.

SPEAKER_01

Um first of all, why are you not loving that?

SPEAKER_02

Well, because it's an awkward time or the season to do it. And and if if we were gonna do it in September, I'd be all about it. And I'm still all about it. I'm I'm I am all about finding opportunity. You just gotta be careful with this hunting opportunity. Now for the for the viewers, we're talking about the black belly whistling ducks, right? Here in North America, we have two whistling ducks. Uh, there's a fulvis whistling duck and a black belly whistling duck. Me and Chris have killed both species here in Louisiana on the same days, on the same whatever same property. Now, for the guys that are gonna be hunting that in October, it is not a whistling duck season, it's a black belly whistling duck season. So you can only shoot at black belly whistling ducks, you cannot shoot at or harvest at the fulvis whistling duck. All right, they're not the ones that are overpopulated, it's the black bellies now. Like I was saying, Chris, I think if it was during teal season, I would uh be all about it for two reasons. Uh teal the blooming teal has gone down in population, and we're still we're still having teal season. So what I wouldn't mind, and the black belly wasn't like as pretty uh is uh they're still down here in pretty good numbers. They haven't kind of shifted their mic uh shifted their areas yet in September. I wouldn't mind seeing in September bring back bringing down the teal teal to four teal and two whistling ducks. Or since we have a an abundance of whistling ducks, you make it all right, it's a six per um limit. You can shoot no more than uh three or four blueing teals. So some of the guys, if you wanted to harvest all six whistling ducks, you could. Um or you shoot your four and two or three and three, or you know, or whatnot. Now that didn't happen, it's its own season in October, but I thought that you know that's a good, you know, that would have been a good time. They're still here, they're still plentiful. Now uh you go into October, the whistling ducks are they are around a little bit, not still as much as it is when they're here during teal season. They start spreading out a little bit, they start some sort of, you know, they're seeing them go up north, they're seeing them go head down east and southeast all the way to Alabama. Um, and you're not getting, you know, I don't think you're gonna get the best bang for your buck. Also, you're starting to get the Halloween birds, you're starting to get um spoon bills, pentails, uh teal coming in, uh, your early mallards are coming in, some wigeon are coming in, your calendar birds, what we like to call our are um our Halloween birds. Now, some of those are probably gonna get shot. Uh mistakes happen, even though I mean you've hunted whistling ducks with me. I don't know how you can mistake them, but I got it, mistakes happen. Well, even if you're just hunting a whistle and ducks, you're doing a good job at it. Those ducks, those other big bottled ducks, are going into the same areas in the same marsh, and they I have them in my rice field that the whistle ducks are going in, the same crawfish uh ponds. So, yeah, you can't shoot those ducks, you're only shooting at the whistling ducks, but you're putting added pressure on those ducks, other ducks, yeah. And they're gonna go, you're watching it pushed into these no-shoot um refugees and stuff like that. That's an issue. I'm not saying it is gonna happen. I should see it happening. Uh, I mean, this is the first year experimental year. Now, if Joe was the emperor, the uh supreme emperor uh of the waterfowl uh legislation, I would have wanted it done in the spring.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, almost like a because that's when they're like a goose season.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I'm talking about like May, May, June. Uh, yes, it's hot, yeah, but that's when these birds are out, that's when they're in the rice fields doing their destruction. That's when, you know, um, you know, I would want to see them before that's the time of breeding and all, and they're losing their fight wings. I got that, but I want to see something in the spring later in the year where they're they're consolidated, you could harvest them, there's no way to kill another bird, and we're getting we're getting that population down to a manageable uh population.

SPEAKER_00

No, I agree. Joseph and I no, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I think um, because I was trying to think like I mean, what was the downfall of it, but there is no downfall of it because I mean you might get logistically people want to come to Louisiana hunt in the spring, but that's like turkey hunters who don't have a spring season or don't have uh don't have a s uh fall season like uh so but in the fall, I think that that kind of falls with a lot of hunting because now you have deer hunters, you have I mean, so I don't think that's the same thing because yeah, I just kind of I'm just curious to see how it turns out.

SPEAKER_02

Um Yeah. I mean, I can say I'm 100% always for more uh hunting opportunities. And I think a lot of time the whistle duck for years got a bad rap of not being very good table fare or junk duck. And we've killed them and yeah, they're good. Yeah, they're fine.

SPEAKER_01

Uh I would tell you this. My wife um she started making these crock pot BDA tacos out of them. Yeah, and I would say we had some whistling ducks. I think that hunt we deal with you with uh uh Mr. Um A rare statements. A rare spot. Um those BDA tacos, those because I specifically wrote them down. Those these were the whistling ducks, just kind of see those we agree, those came out the best as far as like rock pot slow cooking BDA tacos types, and it just it was it came out the best because it it it just I don't know if it was the um it's it's just um uh uh yes, I don't want to say peeled, but shredded the best. Um shredded the best. It just came out, yeah. It came out real tender.

SPEAKER_02

They're a tender bird, they they they break the the muscle fire breaks down real easily when cooking. Uh I mean we see it all over the internet now, right? And I know and I know you know Chris does a really good job of letting me take this argument when it comes to the mallards and all the hunting pot, you know, with the hunting drama, right? But we still kill a good amount, Chris. Me and you both still kill a good amount of ducks down here in the south. Are we hammering the mallards? No. And do I want to see conservation? And this is what kind of got me thinking about a lot of things. Yeah, I think that sometimes social media, even though once again we're on it, we use it uh for personal reasons and for this podcast. But um a few weeks ago, uh Split Reed put a little thing out talking about what was the most um what was the most har sought-out burden in the market error, right? And you see guys saying people saying mallards, you know, they put a question out. You see people saying mallard, uh pentail, everything. And when you come, you know, come to find out it's a diver duck. But cannabis back was the king of ducks. That was what most restaurants, one high-class restaurants wanted to serve, right? To their patrons, was a cannabis back duck. Uh they're delicious. They're they're one of my favorite eating birds. Not my favorite, but one of my favorite. And I think in in probably the last 30, 40, probably 50 years, the you know, the mallard has been what we what we consider the pinnacle of the duck. But for people who don't know, the canvas back, that's its nickname was the king of ducks. It was the king. That's what everybody wanted. Uh, was a mallard duck. That's what all the big, you know, big wigs and you know, were people paying in the 20s and 30s for was a canvas-backed duck. Now, yep, mallard population has gone down and all that, but canvas-backed redheads, scop, their numbers have plummeted way down. And it seems like we could we could bat an aisle, whatever. It's not a mallard, so it it is real weird. Um, I know going off a tangent, but this goes back to the uh these um listen ducks. You know, is when did the you know a duck's a duck, right? Like we're duck hunters, and uh, I think we should treat conservation and respect these duck, you know, ducks. I mean, look at a mallard and a spoonbill's equals, look at a wige and a mallard as equals. I mean, to be honest with you, you know me real well. And I I know when I when we start talking about this, people roll their eyes at me, and I Joe's bullshit. My favorite duck to eat is a fucking my apologies. Quack. Yeah, yeah, is it is a wood duck. I it is my favorite duck to eat. I enjoy eating a wood duck, and it gets his nose turned up on waterfowl hunters because it's a wood duck. Oh, you can't decoy it, it's a stupid bird, whatever. I don't know why the wood duck gets such a like that it's not considered waterfowl hunting. But listen, I got a very nice lease. I still will go out and into these back marshes and these back cybers and kill wood ducks. But going back to what I said, I would rather eat a whistling duck than some of these mallards. To me, it's it's it's it it's probably one of the top five table fare ducks uh uh you know I enjoy eating. Ducks.

SPEAKER_00

No, I agree.

SPEAKER_02

My favorite is always gonna be speckled.

SPEAKER_01

But no, yeah, I agree. When it comes to ducks, yeah, no, I agree. I think I it's very far in between to like for me, anyways, to judge, depending on how you cook them. Now, if you're straight, like just steak-wise, yeah, 100% like wood duck is a little bit more of a fatty, like puddle duck, you know. But I mean, I've had I've had some bluebells that came out amazing. Just like smoking them. So smoking them in some butter. And um, so those are I mean, I guess you would say diver ducks, but yeah, bluebell. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, in the uh even like a um the ring necks, the ring next year, such a bad rap. And dude, I've I've eaten ringnecks uh I mean I could do a taste test and they'll taste no different than a cat ball.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I mean, they're no, and I I I agree. But I mean, no, and I I I wanna I think there's a conversation for another time. I think we should have a conversation on that and they're honestly what they're eating, because you know, doing more and more research, like some of these diver ducts, yeah, they might eat fish, but they're eating some of them are eating like aquatics. Aquatic stuff. They're not eating, they're not and that's why like you don't get that much of a fishy, like a McGanser. Strictly, strictly gonna get, you know, trying to get small fish and stuff like that. So I mean, I I that I think that's a good topic that we can talk to like what exactly, because when I first got in the game, I thought a di all diver ducts just ate fish and they died. Yeah. I mean, it's they're eating aquatic like um invertebrates, they're eating snails.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, exactly.

SPEAKER_01

They're in snails, or they're eating aquatic, like um just bottom, you know, vegetation, you know, aquatic vegetation and stuff. So um they might every, you know, they might eat crawfish. I mean, they'll they'll eat some of those.

SPEAKER_02

So I've seen I've seen mallards eat crawfish. I've seen them, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

It's crazy about how much how much how much snails they eat too, because like you think of ringnecks, and like and the reason I say that is just for the viewers, one of my best hunts was a ringneck break uh beatdown, and they were just uh I would the the one uh my buddy was he was with me, he's like, go in the water and go see what's in there. Nothing but snails everywhere. It was it was like snail infested in this tank, it was crazy, it blew my mind, and that's what they wanted. Yeah, and it's almost like what species wants, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and it was surprising with that. I know I know exactly what hunt you're talking about. You see me pictures and stuff like that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Um, I would have never thought about killing those ringnecks on those cattle ponds like that.

SPEAKER_01

It's insane, but they love those, they love the snails. They just they were going crazy from it. It just blew my mind, but it was snail infested. I had never and never in my life have never seen so many snails. Um, but he said it was just it was in there's an old creek that runs through there that the I guess the snails make their way there, and it just it just blew my mind, but it's um it's insane what you know what they like to pick and choose and what they want to eat and what they as far as a duck, anyways. I I don't know. I mean, we all know like wood ducks are uh love acorn trees and stuff like that stuff.

SPEAKER_02

They're a little stubborn, you know, they have a refined palate. Yeah, but to me had to use it. I just made some I made wood duck pot ruffs last night, and it was I was like, man, man, I can't you know people make fun of if I had to pick two birds to only hunt for table fair, it'd be speckable by the goose and a wood ducks.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, wood ducks. I love wood ducks. You could do anything with a wood duck. I mean, I don't care what anybody says. Um, I'm with you on that. I've seen it firsthand. I I would say I I love hunting wood ducks in a flood of timber. Uh, you know, it's probably one of the probably one of my favorite hunts. Um, just the way they just man, the if you're new to waterfowl, do a wood duck hunt, just watching them go through them trees, flying the way they cup, the way they move. I mean, it's insane. It's kind of it's like an F-16. It's insane the way they move. Like it's like how they're dodging branches at high speed. It's crazy to me. It's like, um, but I mean, that's part of like being in uh being a duck hunter. I think that's one thing is that we found a love for what they do. And um, we've we've looked at them as like, man, that's it's amazing. But I'm I'm not going on a tangent. Me and Kristen were talking about this the other day. It's like we've I mean we've not shot just because like they looked they've looked amazing, but not to sound soft and don't get it twisted. I still fight. I'm just kidding. But but you know, the claws. Yeah, but you know, you you gotta you gotta respect the you know, you gotta respect these animals, man. It's it's crazy.

SPEAKER_02

Um and and they're all like you said the the wood duck, you know, there's the wood duck that knowing you were you know you're you're talking about. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But yeah, the ones that were just yeah, yeah, the little bat hole that we used to hunt. They were just cupping left and right over there. It was, it was, it was just phenomenal, man. It's insane. But um I mean they're they're great table fair. I love them. They're they're great to hunt. I mean, I don't care what anybody says, they decoy and they'll they I've seen it firsthand. They respond to a call. I don't care who you are, and I challenge any of you come on a hunt with me, and I promise you I'll show you.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I mean, even the the dive, I mean you we got on that good bluebill shoot that one day on the scope here in the marsh, and even watching them like when that that when they were saying F-15s, you know, doing a scrape and run off the deck, yeah. Yeah, I mean, all these ducks mallards, pintails, I mean, you have to enjoy the hunt for what it is, and each bird. I think that you have to to be an avid waterfowler, enjoy each species of bird. Uh yeah, and don't man, I I just want to get rid of the stigma of us viewing other birds as trash birds or whatnot. I think I really put the damper in on us as hunters.

SPEAKER_01

Uh and I would I would even say like educate yourself on you know the bird. Don't just take the breasts, because I I feel like I've seen so many just wasteful stuff. Um, and then maybe this is just kind of like um, so I don't get PETA doesn't cancel me for my comment about you know clipped uh pigeons with cam, but they'll be all right.

SPEAKER_02

But we're not that little canceled.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I don't care. But um, you know, I mean, like there's a lot of good things that you can do, like a full roast with a full duck, and you know, just taking the breasts. Like I think, and I I was naive with that, but I mean, you can take a wood duck and just roast it. I mean, full body.

SPEAKER_00

I do I mean you can you can do that with teal. Yeah, you can do that with teal.

I mean, but I don't know, that's another conversation for another podcast. But I mean, I think uh I think at the end of the day, I mean, I I think all these conversations as far as like team hunting, like this is where it ends up coming to. It's like when you hunt enough with a certain buddies a certain time, uh a certain amount of times, you guys end up like, hey man, like we can do this more, or we can do this less, or we can uh get involved in your in your local uh conservation, you know what I mean? Like, um, and there was one thing you said a long time ago, and I'm it always stuck with me, is like the people who get involved the most with conservation are duck hunters, are the hunters. So, I mean, you guys can say, oh, you know, whoever you're against whatever we're doing, but the hunters are the ones that are wanting to get the numbers.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, if you want to talk about anyone who puts more money to conservation, it is a hunter.

SPEAKER_01

It's a hunter, yeah. 100%. And it's just because I mean, just like you, you're you know, you want I want generations of my kids showing their kids of what they the experience they had.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah. But yeah. Do you got anything else, man? No, bro. This is a good one.

SPEAKER_01
