The other night someone in my workshop said: "I'm just so tired of everything feeling heavy. I want to feel alive again."

That moment is why this podcast exists.

This is the relaunch of Creative Self Care with Crystal McLain — somatic practitioner, nervous system educator, and someone who crafts spells with science.

If you're exhausted, overwhelmed, and convinced you're the problem — you're not. You just need better information.

That's what we're doing here.

When Everything Feels Heavy

SPEAKER_00

Picture this. It's a Tuesday night, and I'm sitting in a room with several other women. We talked about the shit we carry. We learned about stress in the nervous system. We shared dinner. We made art. There were tears. There were laughs. And along the way, I could see light bulbs popping on inside their heads. I could see these women returning to themselves. And at the end of the night, one of the women said, I'm just so tired of everything feeling heavy. I want to feel alive again. And I thought, yes, that's it. That's the whole thing. The exhaustion, the disconnection, the dullness, the detachment you feel from your own heart and soul. That shit is showing up everywhere. It shows up when you're staring at a to-do list, unable to make yourself start. It shows up when you tell everyone you're fine when you're actually feeling empty inside. It shows up at 1 a.m. when you're doom scrolling because your brain won't shut the fuck up. It shows up in the car, crying alone after holding it together for everyone else. It shows up as resentment towards your current life and a deep longing for something new. If any of that sounds familiar, first let me tell you, there's nothing wrong with you. In fact, it makes a lot of sense, and we'll get to that in a minute. But I want to welcome you because you're in the right place. My name is Crystal McLean, and I'm a somatic practitioner, nervous system educator, and someone who crafts spells from science. So, in short, I work with people who are exhausted, overwhelmed, and absolutely convinced that they are the problem. In my practice and in workshops and in community spaces, I keep meeting the same person. Capable, caring, burnt out, and stuck in cycles they can't seem to break, no matter how hard they try. And I keep telling them the same thing. It is hard to take care of something you don't understand. And let me tell you, that lesson didn't come from a textbook. It came from my own life. And it started in an unexpected way. So let's roll back to 2008. I'm freshly divorced, running a diner with my ex-husband until it sells, and trying to figure out what the hell I'm going to do with my life. So I ended up deciding to become a massage therapist because it seemed like a cool gig and I could be my own boss. And honestly, I just wanted something that was flexible and mine. So I start massage school, and somewhere in the middle of it, I picked up a book called Waking the Tiger by Peter Levine. And something cracked open. Not in a dramatic movie montage kind of way, but more like a quiet exhale that I didn't know I'd been holding. For the first time in my life, I had language for something I'd been living with forever. I had a lot of patterns I'd written off as personal failings. Some of those are people-pleasing, perfectionism, really unhealthy coping tools, dissociation, and endless distractions. But come to find out, these weren't character flaws. They were my nervous system doing exactly what it learned to do to keep me alive in the face of trauma and chronic stress. I was not broken. I was dysregulated. And those are very, very different things. And that realization changed everything. And it's basically been my whole thing ever since. So here's what I know to be true: your body is not your enemy. It is the most ancient intelligent survival system on the planet. We're talking millions of years of evolution encoded in your nervous system, your gut, your fascia, your breath. It has been navigating threat, loss, overwhelm, and change long before any of us had words for it. And now, finally, the science is starting to catch up. Neuroscience is giving us the language and the maps for what our bodies have always been doing. The stress, the shutdown, the cycles you can't seem to break, they make sense. They have a logic. And once you understand that logic, everything starts to shift. Not because understanding magically fixes everything, but because you can't take care of yourself. Like really take care of yourself without understanding what's actually happening inside you. And you cannot reclaim agency you don't know you have. That's what I watched happen the other night. A group of women in a room finally understanding why they'd felt so stuck and feeling something release in real time. That's not magic. Well, actually, maybe it is. But it's the kind of magic that has a science to it. And that's exactly what I'm building. In person, yes, but also online in a community I call the Uprising. Because not everyone can join me in a room in coastal Maine on a Tuesday night. That's impossible. So the uprising is my Patreon community for people who are done waiting to feel better and ready to do something about it. But not in an overwhelming, add one more thing to your fucking plate kind of way, but in an accessible, oh my God, this actually fits in my life kind of way. At the uprising, you get deeper dives into the blog and podcast, downloadable practices, and my self-guided toolkit, Turn Stress into Strength, which walks you through body literacy, self-awareness, and six practical tools grounded in neuroscience and designed for actual human life and adaptable to your personal life. But honestly, I think the best part about the uprising is the community itself. Because nothing uplifts you more than being in a room, even if it's a virtual one, with people who get it, who aren't going to tell you to just think positive or to try harder, who aren't going to judge you or dump their shoulds on you, but who are here to bear witness, to support, and to do the work alongside you. That's where the real magic happens. You don't need more discipline or another gadget in your closet or another app on your phone. You need to understand what's actually happening in your body. You need to feel supported in community. And you need to remember what it feels like to be alive again. And that's the work. And you're already capable of it. I'm just here to show you how, with a little science and a touch of magic. So here's the question Are you in? If so, you can find everything you want to learn at crystalmacleancreative.com. And if you want to jump straight into the deep end, the uprising is waiting for you. I love you. I appreciate you. Thanks for showing up today. Let's fucking do this. Bye.
