Romanistan
The authors of Secrets of Romani Fortune Telling present: Romanistan! Do you love rebels? Do you want to live in a place where outcasts shine their brightest? Welcome to Romanistan! We're your friendly neighborhood Gypsies, celebrating Romani identity and outcast culture, and practicing good diplomatic relations with other marginalized communities.
We love the rebels who are living their truth, even if it clashes with tradition. We also love tradition and honoring our roots. This podcast is for everyone who loves and supports Roma & related groups, and anyone who feels like a misfit and wants to uplift others to create a beautiful community.
We feature pioneers in culture, fashion, art, literature, music, activism, cuisine, and everything good. We adore the intersections of gender, sexuality, spirituality, ability, and identity. We cover all topics, from the difficult to the glorious. Let's sit crooked and talk straight.
Hosted by Paulina Stevens and Jezmina Von Thiele. We reclaim the slur Gypsy, but if you aren’t Romani, we prefer you don't use it. xoxo.
P.S. The Romani people are a diasporic ethnic group originally from northwest India, circa the 10th century. Now, Roma live all over the globe, and due to centuries of oppression, slavery, genocide, and other atrocities, Roma are still fighting for basic human rights. We seek to raise awareness of who Roma are, and highlight Romani resilience, creativity, & culture.

Hey listeners, we are doing a fundraiser for the podcast and one of our favorite nonprofits, Iramnia. On the 22nd of December at 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, it is the Santa Jez Abundance Ritual where me, Santa Jess, does an abundance ritual with you. There will be a replay if you can't make it live. But basically, the price of your ticket, which is totally by donation, goes toward 5050, the podcast and e-romnia, which does amazing work for Otomani community in Romania, including work with domestic violence survivors, trafficking survivors, just they're just wonderful. And you can send in a wish list that I will incorporate into the ritual. Your wish list remains private, of course, just I see it. But there will also be a meditation with my immaterial world co-host Jessica Richards, and a reading guiding you into an abundant new year. So it'll be really cute. You can sign up through the link in the show notes. It's on Eventbrite, it's on my Instagram link tree, it's everywhere I post things, it's on my website, jezminavontila.com. So please join us. And uh if you don't want to join for some reason, but you just want to donate, I also have links to do that. If you want to donate directly to EROMNIA or directly to the podcast, I have links on the Eventbrite as well. Thanks so much for listening. We really appreciate you. Bye.
SPEAKER_00:Welcome to Romanas then.
SPEAKER_01:We're your friendly neighborhood gypsies. I'm Paulina. And I'm Jez, and we have your tarot reading for the week of December 15th, 2025. Love, money, and guidance. And our love card is the Five of Wands, which is a little spicy, a little challenging. What's your advice, Paulina?
SPEAKER_00:Okay, so first of all, this is a card definitely about conflict. So I feel like when it comes to those close relationships, especially love and partnerships, this really represents a week of maybe attention, some disagreement, I think like your ego getting too riled up. And it's not like breakup energy, but it is we keep hitting like we keep running into the same damn wall type of energy, if you know what I'm saying. So two people with very different styles that are coming out and clashing, styles as in like emotional styles, communication styles, and and stuff like that. And I also feel like sometimes really uncomfortable things can come up, like jealousy, competition, not seeing eye to eye, like just a lot of that. And that's where I feel like you have to, I guess, get to the bottom of it, wait until y'all are both chill, have a good deep conversation, and also I guess pick and choose your battles too.
SPEAKER_01:Absolutely. And I think this card can be such a good reminder that conflict doesn't have to be painful. It can be clarifying, it can be done really gently and respectfully. If you're not familiar with the term listeners, definitely Google nonviolent communication. It doesn't mean not punching each other in the face. Uh, it has a very intense uh title for something that is just about communicating in a way that's very de-escalating and really centers, you know, I feel statements versus being like, you are such a dick. Instead, you're you're saying like what you need and what you feel, and you're asking about how the other person feels and what they need, and you're recognizing what they've been trying to do, and you're recognizing how you feel. And it's like it's a very kind way to go about moving through conflict. I know that Plum Village, which is a really beautiful Buddhist uh sanctuary, has some great resources on communicating through conflict in a loving way. So tools like this, I think, are really your friends. And this is also a good time to head off any conflict that you see bubbling. Don't let it get to a bad place. If you see that someone you care about, whether it's a friend or a coworker or a partner, is feeling uncomfortable about something, just take the opportunity to ask some questions or, you know, offer them the information that they need. Try, like Paulina was saying, to just pick your battles. Not everything has to be a fight, but you do have to have some confrontation this week. And it might bring you closer or it might clarify that things have run their course, but it doesn't have to be a dramatic outcome. It might actually just be clarifying for everybody. For sure. The Queen of Pentacles is our card for money, which I'm loving. How do you feel about that?
SPEAKER_00:It's perfect. Yeah, like the Queen of Pentacles is representing purpose and foundation, you know, obviously, good finances, stability, comfort, being grounded, abundant. So you're basically moving into a place where your money is becoming more reliable, and you're also getting ideas in how to manage it, I guess. Or maybe not even ideas, you're just learning how to manage your money, or learning that at least managing your money needs to be a priority, I would say. But yeah, I think this card is just about taking control, having confidence, and being independent in your finances. So even when let's just say like you grow up, you turn 18, like, okay, maybe you're not fully independent of your finances, or let's say you've been in a relationship or sometimes you're depending on your mom, or sometimes you're depending on a certain job, and like now certain things are getting taken away, or they're they're re-evaluating in different ways, and you're like, okay, like I'm stable, but I still have to figure out kind of how to navigate through this, and so I feel good about it overall. Like, what do you think?
SPEAKER_01:I love this. I agree that this is such a good time for you to learn to master your money and be excited about that. I work with a bookkeeping coach, Krista McClellan of EM Bookkeeping. If you feel like you want to learn more about your money, especially if you have a small business, I think it's so important. But then there's also wonderful resources out there. Um, like I think her name is Hannah Cole. She does taxes for artists. Yeah, she has a group or an organization called Sunlight Tax, and she's a tax expert who specializes in working with creative businesses and self-employed people, entrepreneurs, artists. These are the kind of resources that make sense for me to look into. So I like to share them when people have a similar um energy about them. But maybe you need to learn the stock markets, maybe you need to create a trust or a living will. Maybe you need to learn how to actually invest in high yield savings accounts and what that means for you, or a number of other things that I don't understand. But this is a good time for you to feel empowered about your money because you're thinking about your own personal goals, whether that's just I want to feel secure, I want to have a nest egg, I want to own a house, I want to be able to retire someday. And in the short term, I think the Queen of Pentacles is all about doing things that make you feel good about your work, your money, your health, your home. Put a little energy into making your space pretty. Spend a little bit of money on yourself, don't go crazy because you're still also learning about budgeting and making your money work for you. But this is a good time for you to appreciate your abundance and maybe invest in yourself. If you do have your own business or if you have a side hustle or something else, this is a good time to put a little money in what you're doing for you and see how you grow. I applied for, what is it called? I applied for a tech grant from a small business fund so I could redo my website. And it's already helped me a lot. I get more bookings because people don't have to go back and forth with me over email. And so sometimes things like that, investing in yourself can actually bring you more abundance. And I double invested because I didn't use my own money to begin with. So it's like you might be able to become more savvy about money, even though we're in a time, if you're in the US with us, where funding for everything is being cut, you still might be able to figure some things out. For sure.
SPEAKER_00:You might be able to survive. That's all we can tell you.
SPEAKER_01:No, we hope we hope that we all survive and we're gonna try to help. Oh god. Laugh through the pain. So the eight of cups is our guidance for the week. What are your thoughts about this?
SPEAKER_00:I feel like it's pretty simple, like super fucking simple to walk away from what is draining you emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Like it's time for that. It's time for you to leave behind the old patterns and the old just way of living and even that old thought process. Like when you walk away from things like that, it allows your own brain to move and to grow and reconnect. And basically, you're not living like an MPC anymore. Like you are the main character.
SPEAKER_01:I like that so much. It's such good advice, especially thinking about the previous two cards, because we have this card of conflict starting us off with love and relationships, and that conflict can clarify boundaries for you, which would I often associate with the eight of cups, even if you're not leaving, maybe you're stepping back, or maybe you're stepping back under certain circumstances. And it's also possible that you might be leaving them if you need to, if it feels like it's helping. And uh yeah, I agree. The eight of cups is very much like you've got your whole life ahead of you, and you're not on this earth to make everyone else happy. You can't even do that, it's not even possible. What direction do you need to go in to make your life better? And the Queen of Pentacles is interesting too here because sometimes money is just gives us peace of mind. So if you're at a place where, okay, I didn't finish that sentence, but I'm thinking about sometimes I meet with clients and they're like, oh my God, everything is going so well for me, but I'm so overwhelmed. I have so much to do. And they're making lots of money at their business or doing all these great things, and they're saying that they're so overwhelmed. And I'm like, Can you hire someone to help you with these things? And they're like, Oh, I could never hire someone to clean my house. I could never hire someone to do my laundry. You know, I grew up working class, and it's like, okay, you why don't you give another hardworking working class person a job and you go go to sleep before midnight? Like, you know, and it's just it's interesting. So sometimes money can also give you the ability to step away from things that are too much for you, and uh you can be a wonderful employer to someone or give someone an opportunity to make a little side hustle, and you can be a wonderful, kind person about that too, because it's like I think people get uncomfortable about feeling like they're asking for help or putting people out, but actually, your abundance can just create more opportunities for you, and you don't have to do literally everything. You can walk off into the distance and think your thoughts.
SPEAKER_00:I like that.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, I mean that's not where I am personally, but someone might be there.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. I do, I am at the overwhelming exhausting part, but that's about it.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, not the money part. Not yet.
SPEAKER_00:Not yet.
