Romanistan
The authors of Secrets of Romani Fortune Telling present: Romanistan! Do you love rebels? Do you want to live in a place where outcasts shine their brightest? Welcome to Romanistan! We're your friendly neighborhood Gypsies, celebrating Romani identity and outcast culture, and practicing good diplomatic relations with other marginalized communities.
We love the rebels who are living their truth, even if it clashes with tradition. We also love tradition and honoring our roots. This podcast is for everyone who loves and supports Roma & related groups, and anyone who feels like a misfit and wants to uplift others to create a beautiful community.
We feature pioneers in culture, fashion, art, literature, music, activism, cuisine, and everything good. We adore the intersections of gender, sexuality, spirituality, ability, and identity. We cover all topics, from the difficult to the glorious. Let's sit crooked and talk straight.
Hosted by Paulina Stevens and Jezmina Von Thiele. We reclaim the slur Gypsy, but if you aren’t Romani, we prefer you don't use it. xoxo.
P.S. The Romani people are a diasporic ethnic group originally from northwest India, circa the 10th century. Now, Roma live all over the globe, and due to centuries of oppression, slavery, genocide, and other atrocities, Roma are still fighting for basic human rights. We seek to raise awareness of who Roma are, and highlight Romani resilience, creativity, & culture.

Welcome to Romanas 10. We're your friendly neighborhood gypsies. I'm Paulina.
SPEAKER_01And I'm Jez. And we are here for your reading, with your reading, for April, for April of 2026. So happy it's becoming spring. I mean, where you are Paulina, it's sounds like it's nice pretty much all the time, but it's like literally 70 degrees, and there's a perfect breeze outside.
SPEAKER_00It's just it's a beautiful day every day.
Love Card Seven Of Pentacles
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's it snowed just two days ago, but it did look very beautiful um at night against the street lamps. Um yeah, it's it's picturesque. So yeah, we we make do. So for the card for love, we have the seven of pentacles, um, which, you know, in the Smith Rider Wait deck that we're looking at depicts a person gardening and tending to a crop. How do you feel about the Seven of Pentacles for Love this month?
SPEAKER_00I feel like it's telling you to have patience. It's coming across as in maybe you feel like you're in a place of love where things are difficult. Also, things going on with the world is difficult, and it might be a little bit difficult to love right now, whether it's an actual lover or a relationship or whether it's family, um, connection and companionship. So allow yourself to be or basically allow yourself to trust what is happening in your love life. Um, because I think it's just about you're going in the right direction. It's really about having that patience.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, patience is so important, especially patience with ourselves as we're like figuring out what we want. This card makes me think of asking which of your relationships you feel like have legs, like the energy and time and emotion that you have invested in your friendships, your romantic relationships, you know, important colleagues, you know, all of the your close, meaningful of relationships. Does it feel like it is held in kind? Is it reciprocated? Do you feel like the investment of energy pays off in a friendship or you know, close connection? It's an interesting card that makes me think about like what you were saying, you have to be patient to see where it's going. But also, it's like with certain situations, certain listeners might feel like, okay, I've been patient and I don't see it changing.
SPEAKER_00Exactly.
SPEAKER_01This card might encourage you to think about who you do want to invest in. Um, and sometimes you need to invest in yourself first or concurrently uh to even things out. But I think, yeah, it's a it's a good time to think about the staying power, the lasting power of relationships and what you want to invest in for your future. Sometimes I think people can stay in situations hoping that things will change or hoping that the other person will change, but not really seeing any um evidence of that. And remembering too that it takes people a long time to change. So you want to like be thoughtful about who you're investing in, unless you really do see people actively working on themselves, you know, doing active listening with you, growing with you. But if they aren't growing with you, maybe you go grow with someone else.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I like that advice. It's really about weighing out your options as well.
SPEAKER_01And for money, we have the page of cups, which is an interesting one for money. What do you think about that?
SPEAKER_00I think it's the perfect card for money because I feel this myself. Like as this reading is coming out, I really do feel it myself, especially with um having this page, this kind of creativity and teamed up with basically you know, lucrative purpose. So that's that is kind of what it encapsulates to me. I feel like it's all about using, putting it in easy terms, like going into something creative, um, pursuing maybe a creative passion, or even if it's not lucrative, it's just getting something started, getting something going, or maybe it's not a creative passion, but maybe with everything going on with the world right now, you know, I'm gonna sell this, or I'm gonna sell muffins, or I'm gonna get this, or I'm gonna do that. That's where my like head state is. Like I want to become self-sufficient and my brain is thinking harder and I I feel more creative, you know.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I really like that. Yeah, I I mean, also this is just a good time of year in general to be clearing things out. And so even if you're just listing some things on Facebook Marketplace, I have some um suede. I know, I have some suede chaps that I'd like to sell, you know, that I just need to list. It's like those kind of creative, innovative ways to make a little bit of money and have it be a little fun, even if it's not like you're starting a whole business or a side hustle, but you're just like, yeah, I have a hundred baskets in my garage and people love that. I'm gonna put them on eBay or like, you know, put up an ad on Facebook Marketplace or whatever.
SPEAKER_00For sure.
Overall Guidance Five Of Wands
SPEAKER_01The page of cups also um makes me think of noticing patterns that feel emotional around money and spending. So whether um, you know, I know people who maybe are financially stable now but grew up poor and they're always worried about money and kind of almost like they're little kids who are afraid of running out. They sort of like um are very miserly with themselves and maybe other people too. And um, then I know people who have had a different experience and they may have um grown up with some struggle. And now to compensate, they spend emotionally, it helps them feel like they have enough, even if they spend so much they don't. And it doesn't even have to be coming from a place of lack. It can be there, can be so many reasons why people have um habits with money that are more emotional than rooted in reality. Yay, that's my team. Yeah, and the page of cups has this image of the, you know, the person talking to a little fish in a cup, and it's really it makes me think of having that compassionate inward look uh at what you're doing and why, and kind of talking to that maybe younger or more vulnerable or emotional part of yourself, being like, okay, so why did we spend so much on Amazon last night? Where is that coming from? Or like, why am I afraid to buy myself lunch if I'm out? Why would I rather go hungry than you know, stop and buy something? Um, and so I think it can be nice to use this card as like a very gentle, introspective look at how you relate to money and if there are any things that feel like they help, don't help, or could just be tweaked. And maybe some journaling and would help with this. But self-compassion is really key. This is a very loving look at like, okay, honey, what do you need for yourself? Lastly, our overall message, our overall guidance is the five of wands. A bunch of people fighting with sticks. How do you feel about that?
SPEAKER_00Men, it feels like that's the whole state of the world right now.
SPEAKER_01I know. We're laughing because it's upsetting.
SPEAKER_00I don't know why we're laughing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I have a nervous laugh. It's just who I am.
SPEAKER_00Like, because I a part of me just feels like, okay, World War III started. Like, what else? Yeah. Come on, universe. Like, what else? Gimme, give me what you got. Let me see it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, I feel like in every reading we have this message of, you know, think globally, act locally. How can you support people in your community? How can you, you know, get the message out? How can we resist fascism? And it it still applies. Uh, so I mean, I do think that anyone who is not accepting that we're in America, you know, I'm speaking only, you know, from an American perspective, um, that we're under an authoritarian regime, you know, if you're still denying that you're in a you're in a bad place. But um it's it does make me feel like there's this backdrop of fear that we're dealing with, and we're still being asked in these previous cards to work on ourselves and our relationships and you know our day-to-day. And it makes me think too that sometimes when the world feels very dire, it can put things in perspective for us. Like the five of wands, for me, it's feeling a little bit like life is too short to not deal with things as you need to deal with them. If there's conflict you need to resolve, if there's something that is making you miserable in your life, like life is simply too short. We like just just deal with it, don't put it off.
SPEAKER_00Um, yeah. Also build a community. Like if you were ever thinking of a time to do that, um, now's the time, like you were saying, act locally. So get to know your local small businesses, get to know your neighbors and like get let everybody get on the same page.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and that doesn't mean that there won't be conflict. I think this um card really makes us acknowledge that conflict is inevitable wherever there is intimacy and closeness. But that doesn't have to be a bad thing. It can be something that helps us understand each other better, learn better communication skills and coping methods. It's um important that we examine ourselves and each other with compassion and really take accountability, I think, for our role in things.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, take accountability, but also there's like always going to be conflict, like you were saying. Like there's always going to be some kind of misunderstanding, some kind of arguments, not seeing eye to eye. And that's with everything friends, family, random strangers on the on the street. But we are humanity and we're here for something, and we have to stand for something. Yeah, I love that.
SPEAKER_01So this month we are really buckling down and working on our book, Paulina and I. And if you want to support us, there are a few ways. Um, first, donating to support the podcast helps us so much. Um, we we have a co we have a coffee fundraiser. It's ko-fi.com backslash romanistan podcast. And you can also join our Patreon uh and let us know what you want us to share there. You can ask us questions, you know, whatever you want. It's$5 a month. It's just a more private community, and we have um the option to comment uh privately to us um on all the episodes, and sometimes we post updates on there, and this is the best place to find our behind the scenes about the book. I also have my own Patreon, Jasmina Vontila. I'll I do the same thing, but I also do lots of circles and rituals and readings and group group kinds of things. And you can also book with us. You can book with me at Jasmina Vontila.com, tarot palm and tea leaves. And what are your current offerings, Paulina?
SPEAKER_00So I am also offering readings and I'm offering custom products, so like soaps and things like that. Um, I've also had a weird recent house emergency, so I haven't been able to make a lot of products, but um, that's okay. You guys can still reach out to me and for some kind of sessions, and we can get something started, and we'll just be a little behind on the products.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so maybe booking a session with you is the the best way to do it right now.
SPEAKER_00But 100%.
Events Offerings And Where To Find Us
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so that really helps us a lot, honestly. Um, we don't have to hustle so hard and try like write a book while also working more than a full-time job each. So um that would be fantastic if you've been feeling like you want to get a reading. Now is the time. And uh we also have a couple, well, I have I'm doing a couple of things that I wanted to share. April is Poetry Month, which is fun. I'm sure it's some other months too. Um, some other themes. And I will be at the New Orleans Poetry Festival presenting on witchcraft and in divination and storytelling on April 18th. Our uh the panel that I'm on is called uh Witchcraft is Litcraft, or maybe it's Litcraft is witchcraft. I always reverse it. And then um on the 24th of April, I will be performing at the Brighton Bazaar in Brighton, Massachusetts with Poetry Brothel and uh offering a probably a tea leaf reading workshop and lots of fun poetry things. So if you're in New Orleans or in the Boston area, come see me, do some poetry things with me. Yay, that sounds so fun. It'll be really fun. Yeah. The last time we were in New Orleans, we were doing the Romanasan festival. Mm-hmm. What a delight. Love that place. I know. I'm so excited. I can can't really be gone too long because my little dog has dementia and um and she does not like to be puppy sat for more than like a day. So I'm gonna be very in and out. But um, I'm really excited to go. Yeah, so thanks everyone so much for tuning in. We really appreciate you. And if you're not aware of our new schedule, we do a reading for the month and then we have an interview around mid-month. And so that's going to be our schedule moving forward for a while, um, unless we're able to secure more funding for the podcast, in which case we would make more episodes. So I had thrown it out there before, but if you are a nonprofit or a library or um an education institution and you think that um, or you know someone who might be interested in funding are honestly not expensive to run in the in the big picture, but very expensive for us to run podcasts, uh let us know. We're definitely interested in partnering.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, for sure. We appreciate you guys mentioning us to local libraries and bookstores and just helping us get out there. It really, really means a lot.
SPEAKER_01And we just appreciate you in general. We love hearing from you and feel free to comment and share our episodes with people. We just appreciate you being a part of the Romanistan community. We hope you have a great month. Bye.
unknownBye.
