The Trial & Execution of King Charles I With (Mark Turnbull)

In this episode of American Civil War & UK History, Podcast host Daz was joined by historian & author Mark Turnbull discussed one of the most important events in British history. The trial and execution of King Charles I.

After the English Civil War, Parliament concluded that peace was impossible while Charles I lived, especially after he secretly encouraged a second war in 1648. In January 1649, he was put on trial by the Rump Parliament before a specially created High Court of Justice, accused of treason for waging war against his own people. Charles refused to recognise the court’s authority and did not enter a plea. He was found guilty and executed by beheading on 30 January 1649, an unprecedented act that abolished the monarchy and led to the creation of the Commonwealth.
