Will Power: Is it More Myth than Muscle?

Will Power: Is it More Myth than Muscle?
Show Notes

How much does our environment effect our behavior?  We believe that the answer is quite a bit actually.

People talk about the importance of using willpower as a vehicle for change.  While willpower is important, it often fails.  One reason why we say this is because long-term willpower is not nearly as effective a strategy as understanding your intrinsic reward systems, highest values and which behaviors support them most.  Another reason is because many of the unwanted behaviors we habitually engage in are initiated prior to our conscious awareness.  For willpower to be effective we must preemptively choose one course of action over another.  How can you do that with behaviors that you engage in prior to your awareness?

In this episode me and Tiff explore (beyond my affection for snaggletooth's) the relationships between our beliefs, our environment and how they impact our behaviors.  And, if the behaviors you're engaging in are not the ones that serve your desired outcomes, what can you do about it?

In this episode I misspoke twice.  It was a long day.  First, I mentioned that perception is reality.  That does not mean that I do not believe there is a reality beyond our perception.  I just meant that our beliefs and attitudes shape how we see that reality, the interpretations we make about it, and how we navigate through it.

Second, the infralimbic system is in the medial prefrontal cortex.  I was attempting to delineate between the faster and slower processing networks of the frontal lobes.

We did however engage in our usual banter, deep discussion and practical tools and strategies that you can take away from the episode.
