Dr. Kassis with Dr. Kennon - The Medicine and Science of Addiction
Show Notes

The Local Lens is a public health podcast going inside one community's experience with the drug epidemic. Everyone in the town of Stanton, KY sees this drug issue differently from each other, either because of their personal lives or professional roles. This show aims to showcase those different perspectives through having honest, in-depth interviews with a new guest each episode.

This episode dives into the thicket, wasting no time at getting to the chemical nature of addiction. Dr. Taufik Kassis from Stanton Family Clinic took the time to walk our host, Nate Brooks, through the hard science of addiction, explaining what all is going on below the surface.

The conversation breaks down the mechanics of neuroreceptors, dopamine, and other things most of us do not become experts at dealing with, which was very much a learning experience for Nate. To help clear up lingering questions after the initial interview, we spoke with Dr. Julie Kennon of Mercy Health in Clay City to help us out.

Together, the two medical professionals deliver an effective, graspable lesson in addiction science, making their case for addiction being a disease that calls for medical treatment.

These are our people, using our voices, telling our stories, because no one sees it like we do.
