SPEAKER_01Including authentic reactions from rotating co-hosts and insight from trained professionals that give you a real forensic look into true crime.
SPEAKER_03Be warned, this podcast does contain explicit content and graphic descriptions of real life accounts and cases. Listener discretion is definitely advised. Oh well, hello there. Welcome to our fourth episode, Torture Terrors. This episode is going to be intense and a little bit all over the place. We're going a little bit ham sandwich tonight, but we'll try not to torture you.
SPEAKER_05Thank you.
SPEAKER_03But we do have a special guest tonight. Scotty Morgan is going to take you down a deep dark rabbit hole.
SPEAKER_05Hello.
SPEAKER_03So grab a drink, settle in, and buckle the fuck up. I'm Susie. I'm Gavin. I'm Brittany.
SPEAKER_04And I'm Scotty.
SPEAKER_03So, you guys, what are we drinking tonight, Britt? What are you drinking?
SPEAKER_00I am drinking untitled Arts Non-Alcoholic Juicy IPA. It's a new one I found the other day. What are you drinking, Gav?
SPEAKER_01I am drinking Ace's pineapple craft cider. It is not spicy pineapple.
SPEAKER_03No seltzer.
SPEAKER_01Just regular pineapple today. It's not seltzer either.
SPEAKER_03He's not back on his bullshit tonight, you guys.
SPEAKER_01It's very sweet.
SPEAKER_03Well, I am also drinking a pineapple drink, but I'm drinking 10-pin brewing groove pineapple wheat ale from our own Moses Lake, Washington, here in Washington State. It does not taste like pineapple at all. Doesn't taste like pineapple. It says there was one whole pineapple squeezed in every batch. I don't taste it.
SPEAKER_01No. It's really good. It's good.
SPEAKER_03It tastes like an IPA, but it just is not. Pineapple is not the word. No, I don't taste pineapple in there at all. Scotty, what are you drinking?
SPEAKER_04Um, so I don't drink um because it's not cute when I'm drunk. So I am yeah, it's a very ugly show. Um, so I am drinking a rock star lemonade energy drink, which anybody who knows me will not be surprised by at all.
SPEAKER_03All right, so now we're gonna get into the facts. So, Brittany, I hear you got some facts for us, so let's hear them. I do.
SPEAKER_00Um, so I got a lot of these facts from the information. Hold on. Did you again?
SPEAKER_04Did you got it from information?
SPEAKER_00I typed information from center, but that means that that was a note to myself that that's where I got my information. Um let me try that again. Uh okay. Um I got a lot of these facts from Center for Victims of Torture, um, which is a website and they had just a bunch of resources and stuff. So to start, the definition of torture is the action or practice of inflicting severe pain or suffering on someone as a punishment or in order to force them to do or say something. Um torture dates back to the 21st century BC. So like 4,000 something years ago. So we've been torturing each other for a very long time. I love humans. Yeah, yeah. We're super rad people. Um great. So there are um a ton of forms of torture. Um, some of the main ones are physical assaults, which would include beatings, prolonged enforced standing, hanging, suffocation, burnings, electric shock, sexual assault and rape, and exposure to extreme heat or cold, um, psychological torture, including verbal abuse, threats against your family, friends, and loved ones, false accusations, forced choices, mock executions, and being forced to witness torture, um, mutilation and murder of others. Damn. But yeah, that is like one of my like not the worst fear. Torture is one that I have a really hard time with, so this week should be interesting.
SPEAKER_04Just put me out of my misery. Like for a lot.
SPEAKER_03No. It's awful.
SPEAKER_01A lot of ways to fuck each other up.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, the deprivation of human humane conditions, which would be like deprivation of food and water, being held in isolation, um, restricting movement, blindfolding, sleep deprivation. Um, and this one sounds awful. Uh, sensory overstimulation, which is including exposure to constant noise, screams and voices, powerful lights, and forced ingestion of drugs.
SPEAKER_04So, like having to stare at a strobe light for like 24 hours.
SPEAKER_00Ugh. Yeah. The screams part like freak. I'm like, oh my God, that is like a horrific uh yeah.
SPEAKER_03Like the US using of the these boots are made for walk-in outside of Waco over and over and over and over and over again. Exactly.
SPEAKER_04Exactly. I actually can relate with that because like there was I work in the animal field and there was a night we had five Siberian Huskies and a 12-hour shift of listening to five huskies communicate back and forth in my own torturous hell.
SPEAKER_00That's a loud breathe. Bam. Never again. Um some of the long-term physical effects of torture include obviously scars, headaches, um, foot pains, hearing loss, dental pain, visual problems, abdominal pain. So every part of your body can be affected long-term by torture. Um yeah, and then the long-term psychological effects include difficulty concentrating, nightmares, insomnia, memory loss, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. So sounds like I might have been tortured at some point.
SPEAKER_03Um I shouldn't laugh, but I was thinking the same thing.
SPEAKER_04I'm like, wait a minute, this is your type glue oxetine. Got it.
SPEAKER_01Um I feel like I've drank this drink before.
SPEAKER_00So while I was looking this stuff up, a suggested like Google that kept coming up, which was kind of weird because I wouldn't have thought to look this up. Like one of your questions that pulls up on Google. Oh, yeah. Are you making fun of me? Like a suggested search. Oh you're like, oh, like those questions that come up on Google. Yeah, the suggested search. Sorry. That was the right word.
SPEAKER_03You just said it the first time, but you didn't say it the second time. So I like wanted to clarify that that's what you were talking about. Oh.
SPEAKER_00That one didn't eat no. So I was trying to real cool. Um, you know, you're fine. Um, yeah, one of like the suggestion searches on Google was the most tortured person in history, which when I saw that, I assumed it was someone like a long time ago. But it was actually um in the in the late 1980s. Um, her name was uh Jun Kao Faruta, and she was a Japanese high school student who was abducted, raped, tortured, and murdered. Um and I've heard this story on a couple podcasts, and it's really, really fucked up. It's an aw, yeah, it's an awful story. Anyways, those are the facts I have. Awesome. The facts.
SPEAKER_01I guess before we get into Scotty's segment, we want to pause one more time to give one more warning.
SPEAKER_03This story is severely triggering.
SPEAKER_01It contains very explicit and graphic content involving rape, molestation, torture, and extreme violence.
SPEAKER_03If you are uncomfortable with any of these topics mentioned, please wait until next week's episode under the influence.
SPEAKER_01We promised not to skim the top, and we promised not to censor the details.
SPEAKER_03We are holding true to this promise.
SPEAKER_01This is real, this is rough, this case is brutal. Prepare yourself. Well, Scotty. Okay. I hear you have a case that has a lot of um things in it, and torture is one of them. It's it's a lot.
SPEAKER_04It's kind of heavy, it's kind of dark. Um bring it on. I know you guys have your I want to start out because I know you guys have like your disclaimer at the beginning of the episode, but I just want to put another disclaimer out there that um in this story there is rape um and molestation briefly involves a child. Um, I tried to make that as brief as possible, which kind of was easy to do, but um, I know that's a touchy subject for some people. So just so trigger warning. Trigger warning, yes. So be advised. Okay, um, so I actually first discovered this case. Um, all I do is watch Investigation Discovery and True Crime. So um on Hulu, there's a show called Your Worst Nightmare. And this was on season two, episode seven. It's called Neighbor from Hell. Um, Investigation Discovery did an awesome job with this case because like it obviously intrigued me. Um, but once I started looking into this case, I found out so much more stuff that they did not include in their episode. And it is crazy. So um are you guys ready to hate a man?
SPEAKER_00Um, I mean maybe more than I already do.
SPEAKER_01Let's do it. You are literally hanging out with the man haters club. The she woman men haters club.
unknownYes.
SPEAKER_04All right. Um, so we are traveling to uh Weatherford, Texas. Uh little location history. Uh, Weatherford, Texas is located about 25 miles west of Fort Worth. It is described by townsfolk as the kind of place you would live for a quiet and peaceful country life. It's located in Parker County, and the city was named by the Texas legislator as the peach capital of Texas due to the peaches produced by area growers. Not the booties. I was just gonna say the pe the peach is my second favorite emoji. Okay, but I'll let you guess what my first one is. Is it a vegetable? It's purple.
SPEAKER_05Fried shrimp. Fried shrimp.
SPEAKER_04Girl, I don't like no shrimp. Uh be a beat. Um so uh the peach is celebrated each year at the Parker County Peach Festival, which is Weatherford's largest event and one of the best attended festivals in the state of Texas. Uh, Weatherford is also home to hundreds of professional horse trainers and numerous Hall of Fame horses. Horse owners from all over the country actually send their horses to Weatherford for training and breeding to some of the best studs in the industry. Yeah. Um, the population of the city is just a little over 25,000, and it is the hometown of our victim, Lois Pearson. So, Lois Pearson, uh, she preferred a peaceful solitude life on her small wooden house on 60 acres. Uh, it was surrounded by the hills of northwest Parker County. Her family lived in this house when she was born in 1949, and except for the two years that she spent at Tarleton State University, about an hour away in Stephenville, Texas, Pearson never moved away. She lived in this home her entire life. It's where she was born, where she grew up. Like this is just where she lived. She never lived anywhere else. Yes. Um, she inherited this home when her parents passed away, and she was content living there by herself on the modest income that she got from leasing her 60 acres to a man with cattle. On warm days, she would stroll through the pastures with her cats and feed the cows. She always had a love for animals. Um, and after her mother died, Pearson was such a homebody and such like an independent person, she became as fiercely self-reliant as one could possibly be. Uh, when the pipe froze one winter, rather than hiring a plumber, she just decided to live without running water for the winter. And she would just haul jugs of water herself from her well. We just done doing that.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Um many of the lights in the house stopped working long ago. So instead of calling an electrician, she just had a long ass extension cord and a lamp, and she just went from room to room as she went about her business.
SPEAKER_03So she's the definition of independent.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, she is I was just gonna say independent introvert woman. Like good for her. Yeah. She don't mean no man. Um, she grew up a very devout Baptist. Um, every Sunday she went to church, and once a month she would drive into the town of Mineral Wells because that was the nearest town with like stores to buy groceries, and she would wash her clothes at the laundromat. She drove a 1970 Nova that she bought new during her first year as an elementary school teacher. On Sundays, she would walk to church and back, which was a 20-mile round trip. Holy crap! She claims she did that for Jesus. I was Hallelujah. Yeah, yeah. Um, she would participate in all the church functions and just absolutely 100% dedicated her life to Jesus and her church. Um, she got really she got rid of her television more than a decade ago, and she often went days without any human interaction. She preferred a quiet and isolated life. She didn't want to socialize.
SPEAKER_03Introverted much.
SPEAKER_04She's socially distanced before all of us. Her old family. Um, she was never married, she never had children, she has never even had a boyfriend. Wow. Uh, she had, in fact, never even been naked in front of a man, not even a doctor. Wow, she was a virgin by choice. She stated being a virgin would guarantee her acceptance into heaven.
SPEAKER_03Wow.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. That is dedication.
SPEAKER_03You gotta protect your investment.
SPEAKER_04And this was her, she's in her early 50s, by the way. So, like, she's holy smell. So, like the first time Lois met Jeffrey Maxwell was in 2001. Um, and it was not long after he brought the property to the west of hers. Jeffrey Maxwell was in his late 40s at this time in 2001. He was a big man, he was six foot five, nearly 300 pounds. He had thick gray sideburns and greasy, disheveled hair. Um, again, Lois Pearson was in her early 50s. She was a petite woman, just over five foot and just over a hundred pounds. They made small talk every so often. Um, he'd wave and honk as he'd pass her house, and they were just good old neighbors. But in 2005, four years after he met her, or after they met, he let her borrow a tractor for her field. As a thank you, she brought him a basket of fresh fruits and fresh fruits and vegetables from her garden. Maxwell responded to the gift by asking her out on a date. Oh god. She can never just be nice to her. Yeah, right. Like, you know, hey, thanks for your tractor. Well, hey, I mean, yeah.
SPEAKER_02What do you what do you do internet?
SPEAKER_04You could thank me with something else. She just wanted to use your tractor. She doesn't think your tractor's sexy. She so um she told him, she told him this invitation makes me feel weird, and she declined and told Jeffrey, I think we make just good neighbors. He became angry and threw the basket of food on the ground and drove off in an unexpected rage.
SPEAKER_03Oof. Why is rejection such a hard thing to do?
SPEAKER_04Like, I've been rejected before. I just go, oh, well, that sucks.
SPEAKER_03I've never been rejected while given a fucking fruit basket. I'm like it wise, I'd be left like oh take that rejection and thank you for the fruit because this is probably way better than what I'd get otherwise.
SPEAKER_04So he drove off. Um, and a few months later, he stopped by again and informed Lois he was moving. Um, he was gonna move about an hour away to the city of Corsicana. He showed her photos of the house and asked her to please come with him. Thank God which again she politely declined. She saw him become angry and then he asked her for a kiss before he left.
SPEAKER_02No, why would you think that?
SPEAKER_01Right.
unknownI already hate him. I hate him.
SPEAKER_01Fucking clue. Don't worry, you'll hate him, you'll hate him much worse. Don't worry.
SPEAKER_03Everybody wants what they can't have, I guess.
SPEAKER_04Pearson became insulted and annoyed and told him, Please don't come to my house again. You're not welcome.
SPEAKER_05Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_04She was very blunt. No more fruit basket for you. He became enraged and told her, You'll regret this, Lois, and drove off. And she never heard from him again. So Jeffrey moved away over a hundred miles and now lives in Corsicana. Lois is continuing her Jesus dedicated, socially distanced, independent life, and everything's fine. Six years go by. Six years. On the afternoon of March 1st, 2011. Now 62-year-old Lois, 62 years old, was at the dining room table clipping coupons, about ready to leave for Mineral Wells to go to the store for her monthly grocering chip.
SPEAKER_03Of course, she's a coupon clipper too, kinda. Let her soul sweet Amy.
SPEAKER_02That's her soul.
SPEAKER_04Um, she lived in such kind of like an isolated area that, like, when she heard like a car pull up in her driveway, like like you just knew, like you could hear it. So she was sitting at her table clipping coupons. She heard the car pull up. She looked out the window and she saw a familiar vehicle, but she couldn't quite identify where she had seen it before because six fucking years. She proceeded to exit her home and walk to the driveway, which I don't do. Like when I see someone pull up, I like lock the doors and like start crawling around the house. I'm like, I'm not fucking home. How do I like I don't know what you want? I'm not home. But um, so she so she left her home, walked to the driveway, but she noticed the vehicle was empty. So as she turned around, she saw Jeffrey Maxwell emerge from behind a tree in front of her front porch. Fucking creep. Yeah. So like he like got out, hid really quick, waited for her to come out, and then like appeared and showed himself. Jeffrey created Jeffrey greeted her cordially with a smile, complimenting her looks and telling her, Hey Lois, it's been too long and you're looking really good. Like you have it aged a bit. But feeling uncomfortable, she kind of proceeded to kind of like walk around him in a circle and started like backtracking away slowly towards the front door. She told Jeffrey, You caught me at a bad time. I was just about to leave to go into town. Jeffrey responded by saying, But I just got here though. It's been six years. Don't you want to catch up?
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_04She didn't know. Fuck off, go ahead. She replied, Not right now, Jeffrey. I really have to get going and I think you should leave. He said, Fine, but one more thing before I go. He then reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a can with a strange top and lifted it to her face.
SPEAKER_05What?
SPEAKER_04Oh before she could say anything, he unleashed a stream of pepper spray, making sure to get it into both of her eyes. Oh no. Blinded, she turned and ran for what she thought was the house, but it was instead the barbed wire cattle fencing next to her car. She reached for the fence and her hands were on top of the wire when he caught her. He wrapped his arms around her abdomen and heaved, but she would not let go of the fence. Like she was gripping this fence so tight the barbs were digging into her fingers and palms, and blood began dripping from her hands. Like she held on as tight as she could. He was strong though, and ripped her off the top of the fence, slicing her palms and fingers against the barbs as he did. Uh uh, yeah, I know. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm like holding my wow. There goes my there goes my invitation to come back. Like you're never coming back again. Get the fuck out. Um, she screamed. And yelled for help, but I mean again, she lived isolated, she was on 60 acres of land, like no one could hear her. Like her nearest neighbor, I don't know where it was, but I'm sure it was like at least a mile away. Um, and then he then dragged her into her home. Once inside, he shoved her to the floor and climbed on top of her. He removed a pair of handcuffs from his coat and handcuffed her. And then he was trying to click a pair of prison-style shackles onto her ankles. She was struggling and kicking Jeffrey, so this made it difficult to apply the ankle shackles. He punched her as hard as he could in the right side of her face with a closed fist and press and then ran to the kitchen where he picked up a wooden rolling pin off the kitchen counter. And so, like those like rolling pines that like you like roll out like cookie dough and shit. And that rolling pin actually belonged to her mom. Oh, it was it was like the rolling pin her and her mom used to like use to like cook, like like bake cookies and shit together. So he picked up the wooden pin, wooden rolling pin, ran back into the living room and struck Lois with it on the left side of her head. She didn't go down, she was still trying to fight and like get him to fuck off. Um, he swung again, even harder this time, hitting her on the right side. This one sent her into a dizzy haze and he successfully shackled her ankles. She could feel her eyes swelling shut almost immediately. However, even though she was dazed and near a state of unconsciousness, she still did not stop struggling. Umway back into the kitchen and grabbed a large butcher's knife. And that is when she finally sat still, dizzy and bleeding onto her kitchen floor. He asked her where she kept the duct tape, and she completely refused to answer him. She was dead silent. He asked again and slapped her again and again she was quiet. So he ripped the like long extension cord that she uses for her lamp out of the wall and began binding her arms to her torso with it. He then struck her with a closed fist, and that is when she passed out and lost consciousness. When she woke up, she found herself bound in the back of his truck, feeling that the truck was on like a highway. Um it was still daylight, so she was lifting her legs in the air, hoping passing motorists would like see her shackled ankles and like possibly help. So um he watched her in the rearview mirror, and every time she raised her legs, he screamed at her and told her he'd pull over and kill her if she didn't stop. She began screaming at Jeffrey to stop and let her go. He responded in a baby voice, mocking her words. Oh. Being the strong, faithful woman she is, she began praying out loud, please God, don't let Jeffrey kill me.
SPEAKER_05Oh, we're baby.
SPEAKER_04He heard her praying out loud and began laughing at her and said, When I'm through with you, you won't believe in God.
SPEAKER_05Oh holy shit.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Oh my god. Uh-huh. He's a real piece of shit. Oh, yeah. He's a real, he's a real piece of shit. Uh Lois eventually felt the truck turn off the highway and felt the rumble of a gravel road. And eventually the truck came to a stop. He removed her from the back of the vehicle where she saw the house, land, and barn that he had shown her pictures of six years prior when he said, Please come with me. She now knew she was over a hundred miles away from home, and he proceeded to take a gun out of his coat and walk her to an old rundown barn at gunpoint, and he closed the door behind them. She looked around the cluttered barn, and as she did, Jeffrey began peeling her clothes off, everything but her bra and underwear. He then ran the blade of a large knife across her body for several minutes, cutting her bra and underwear off while doing so. He did this while licking his lips and complimenting and groping her body with his hands. He then took her handcuffed hands and attached the cuffs to the end of a deer skinning hoist device. She watched him flip the switch on a yellow control box and she felt her arms lift into the air above her head. She then felt her shoulders pulling forcefully upward. When he flipped the switch again, it stopped, and she could feel her naked legs dangling in the air about two feet off the ground. So she's like how far up? Two feet off the ground. So she's literally being held by her shackled wrists on this deer skinning device. Like that's the only thing holding her up, is her handcuffed wrists. Um, so she's in the air by her handcuffed wrists connected to this deer skinning device, two feet off the ground. Um, the force of the device has actually caused both of her shoulders to pop out of socket. So her shoulders are completely dislocated, and she is hanging there naked, ankle shackled, and completely helpless. So I'm gonna stop for a minute because before I get any further, you guys need to know Jeffree's background because it's crazy. So detectives have actually known Jeffrey Maxwell for decades, saying he has always been able to get himself out of trouble, whether it was burning down his house for insurance money, or shooting his pet dogs and cats to get out of buying them food and feeding them, or much, much worse. Jeffrey has always, one way or another, evaded punishment. He once bragged to police that he started stealing women's underwear when he was a teenager. He had taken between 30 to 40 pairs in his lifetime without ever getting caught. Sometimes he'd break in when nobody was home. Other times, if he was like invited over to somebody's home as a guest, he would excuse himself to the restroom and then like slip his hand into their dirty clothes hamper and then pocket a few. He had lots of jobs over the years. Uh he worked as an airline mechanic, as a feed salesman, and even as a prison guard. For the last few years, though, he had been living off Social Security disability benefits. Uh he married when he was 18 when his girlfriend Rita got pregnant. Remember Rita, because she will come into play later. Um, but after a few years, him and Rita divorced. And in 1981, Jeffrey met Martha Martinez through a mail order matchmaking service. Tight. Right. Good old-fashioned mail order brides from no stamps. I paid Z for Sanctors. Postal stamps. Um Martha Martinez lived in Mexico with her parents. So, you know, nothing like a good old mail order bride from Mexico. Uh hi, dad. Apart from a few trips to see her, they're my dad's my dad's married to a woman in Mexico, so and he probably won't listen to us anyway. But if he does, hi dad. Nike.
SPEAKER_05Fuck true.
SPEAKER_04He wasn't the president you thought he was. Anyway. Um so apart from a few trips back and forth to see her, the relationship commit consisted primarily of loving letters sent back and forth. When he finally came to Mexico to propose, Martha's family was very upset. They begged Martha not to marry him, but she was 29 and was worried that this would be her last chance to become a wife and mother.
SPEAKER_01Oh no. Uh not with this man.
SPEAKER_04I am the whole family was always kind of like bothered by Jeffrey. They always got this weird vibe from him. They never felt comfortable around him.
SPEAKER_03Wow, I wonder why.
SPEAKER_04Weird shocker. Um, a few years later, Martha's brother married his wife, Carol. Martha brought Jeffrey to the wedding, and Carol remembers Jeffrey approaching her at the reception, and he said to her, I guess since we're family now, this means I get to kiss you. And he attempted to jam his tongue down her throat. Not how I show up to any family weddings. Like I show up to no wedding thinking I'm gonna make out the fucking bride.
SPEAKER_05Oh my god.
SPEAKER_04Um a few months later, family said he did the same thing to the bride at another family wedding. Um, Jeffree's wife, Martha, began telling friends about some troubling behavior. She would show up with bruises on her wrists and ankles. Um, however, she mostly kept it from family though and gave them the I tripped. Uh, you know, I I stubbed my knee against the cupboard, you know, the accidentally fell down the stairs. Right, right, right, right.
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_04By then, uh, Martha became pregnant. And so her and Jeffrey had a son together. In 1987, Martha was found bound and beaten along Interstate 35, about 10 miles outside of Ardmore, Oklahoma. Mm-hmm. Yeah, she was just found on the side of Interstate 35. Like a passing motorist, like, was like, saw something and was like, what the fuck is that?
SPEAKER_03And he was just dumped her ass after beating the shit out of her.
SPEAKER_04She realized it was a bound and beaten body. Was she alive? Her throat was slit. Oh my god. She was barely alive. Oh my gosh. Doctors were able to save her. Oh, thank God. When she awoke in the hospital, she told police Jeffrey drugged me, tied me up, tortured me, and left me to die on the side of the highway. When detectives searched their home, they found stashed next to the air conditioning unit a brown paper bag full of books and bondage. Below that, they found another bag containing handcuffs, cords, and clothespins. Um, Jeffrey was arrested and only charged with aggravated kidnapping.
SPEAKER_03Shut the fuck up. I'm sorry. When was this again?
SPEAKER_04This was in 1987.
SPEAKER_03Oh god. How much before this happened with the victim?
SPEAKER_04So him and Lois Pearson are 2006. This is 1987 with his second wife, Martha. They had all of his throat slit, and all he got was aggravated. Cursing he did this, he drugged, he tortured. Look, I have a scar on my throat.
SPEAKER_03Say it once, I will say it again. Our justice system is fucked.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_03As much as I'm pissed off about murders and rapists and all those things, justice system is like, eh, that's close second. Not mine.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Oh, absolutely.
SPEAKER_03Sorry.
SPEAKER_04Seriously. Uh-huh. So yeah, so Jeffrey was arrested and only charged with aggravated kidnapping. Uh, Martha took her son with her to Mexico to stay with family. She told them some of the stories that she kept secret for so long, but not all of them. Um, but she did tell them about Jeffrey binding her and locking her alone in a small room for days without food or water. But Martha, when it came time to testify about what she suffered, she felt like the judge and the police wouldn't believe her. So she stopped talking to the authorities, and the authorities stopped contacting her, and eventually the case was thrown out, dismissed, and the charges were dropped, and Jeffrey was released.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god. God damn it.
SPEAKER_04Damn it, Martha.
SPEAKER_02Not damn it, Martha. She did all she could.
SPEAKER_01God damn the justice puzzle, man. The justice system.
SPEAKER_04Can we get a clean up and I'm like, I mean, like they had her confession. Like, she said in the hospital, he did this to me.
SPEAKER_03After her throat was successfully sewn shut.
SPEAKER_04But she completely stopped contacting them and ignored them. And they were like, fine, if you're gonna ignore us, we're gonna ignore you.
SPEAKER_03And so they were like, Pretty dose of victim blaming in there. Pretty much.
SPEAKER_01But she was, you know, she was probably on her own mission to just get herself the fuck out of this situation. Sure. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And at the same time, I feel like I should add, like, believe women. I feel like that's such a fucking huge issue right now. Like, women report things all the time, and like cops and our justice system are just like, well, are you sure you're not over-exaggerating it?
SPEAKER_03That have ruined it for the rest of us. Yeah, totally. Nine out of ten times, they're fucking telling the truth, and that takes a lot to come forward. Oh. It takes a fucking lot.
SPEAKER_04So when Jeffrey was released, he started writing Martha letters.
SPEAKER_03Oh, of course he did.
SPEAKER_04Apologizing for what he did. Martha shared them with her family, and they pleaded with her to not go back to him. In the letters, he stated, God wants us to be together.
SPEAKER_03Don't use your gym like that. Don't.
SPEAKER_04He also blamed Martha for making him mad enough to do what he did to her. No. After hearing and receiving letters from Jeffrey for a few months, Martha moved back to Fort Worth, Texas to be with Jeffrey and give him a second chance.
SPEAKER_02What? He slit your throat.
SPEAKER_01What do you mean?
SPEAKER_04She gave him a second chance.
SPEAKER_01Martha, men do not Jay. That is a narcissist.
SPEAKER_02Like, that's not a thing that you just stop doing. Okay, all narcissists are cute and sweet when they want to be, but they will fucking end you. Don't do it. Yes. Oh god.
SPEAKER_04At first, things seemed to get better. She went to college and got an associate's degree. Their son seemed happy. Martha adored Jeffrey's son from his previous marriage. When Martha brought Jeffrey to a family reunion, some family even forced themselves to make small talk with him. So, like, could you imagine like making small talk with the guy that like slit your sister's throat?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, like nonchalantly, like that's not like you guys broke up because you weren't getting along and now we have to do it. But hey, how's life? Or my sister. Oh are you? Yeah, okay. But yeah. Finding in fucking torturing women. Cool. Cool. But really.
SPEAKER_04They weren't completely surprised when in 1993 Martha went missing.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god.
SPEAKER_04Two different people received letters that looked like they were in Martha's handwriting saying, I'm leaving my husband and son, and I won't be in touch for a while.
SPEAKER_03That looked like her handwriting.
SPEAKER_04Looked like her handwriting. The letters were in English, even though anytime she'd written anything to anyone in her family, it had been in Spanish. The outsides of both envelopes had been addressed in a completely different handwriting. Convinced something horrible had happened, Martha's friends and parents contacted the Fort Worth police. And although the family felt strongly that Jeffrey was involved, there was no evidence or nothing police could find. And so the investigation went nowhere. Martha was never seen or heard from by anyone ever again.
SPEAKER_02No. Oh no.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I'm so I've been pissed off at cases before. I've I say it every episode that I'm pissed.
SPEAKER_04I asked you, are you ready to hate a man? I didn't understand that I was gonna this fucking I loathe this fucking man. In 1995, Jeffrey petitioned the court for a divorce, citing Martha's disappearance. Soon after he remarried Rita, his first wife, he married at 18. Oh my goodness. He remarried her. Remarried her, yeah.
SPEAKER_03So it's not four times.
SPEAKER_04They met back up. It's legal. It's not what was it, Idaho?
SPEAKER_03It was like Tennessee. Something.
SPEAKER_04Kentucky.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. It might have been Kentucky.
SPEAKER_03Check out our Patreon if you know what we're talking about.
SPEAKER_04Subscribe to the Patreon. Um so he remarried Rita, his first wife that he married at 18. Um, by this time, Rita had three young daughters from another marriage. Two days before his wedding to Rita, police reports would later show Rita's best friend said Jeffrey raped her. That woman, who is renting part of a duplex from Jeffrey, said he came over one night to fix a broken sink and he forced himself onto her.
SPEAKER_03Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. This is the wife's best friend?
SPEAKER_04Wife's best friend that he's marrying in two days. This is before their second marriage. Before their second marriage. So they're getting married in two days. But the best friend is saying he raped me. When he was done, he put his clothes on, warned her not to tell anyone or he would kill her, and left her crying on the bed. However, she refused to testify due to fear, and once again, charges were dropped, and Jeffrey was a free man.
SPEAKER_03I'm fucking shaking.
SPEAKER_04Believe women.
SPEAKER_03I'm fucking shaking. Is there anything that this man doesn't do?
SPEAKER_04You'll see. Two days later, Rita married Jeffrey, and not long after he moved in with Rita and her daughters from the previous marriage. Where in the timeline are we? We are in 1996. 1995.
SPEAKER_03So this is before the victim that we're talking about.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so this is after Martha, but before Lois. So Rita still married Jeffrey. Um, moved in with uh her three daughters. The middle daughter complained to school officials that Jeffrey was touching her inappropriately. God damn it. Fuck this girl. The girls damn it. The girl the 12-year-old girl said it happened most often while she was playing Nintendo. He would lie next to her and rub the front of her pants and try and put his tongue in her mouth, which she would try to block with her teeth, and he would always become angry and call her a bitch.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god. How old?
SPEAKER_0312 is Oh my god.
SPEAKER_01I don't I fucking hate him.
SPEAKER_03There's a word beyond hate that I think is applicable here, but I don't that.
SPEAKER_04Rita wasn't sure to believe Jeffrey or believe her daughter. So after the complaints, they thought it would just be best if they moved the family to a different school. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_03Oh, it does just turn the spotlight. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04At the new school, there were new allegations. This time the youngest daughter, seven years old, said she too had been touched.
SPEAKER_02No.
SPEAKER_04She described waking up in the middle of a thunderstorm and wanting her mother, but when she got to the bedroom, Jeffrey was the only one there. She said he groped and licked her all over until they saw the mother's headlights in the driveway and he told her to go back to bed. This time, Child Protective Services insisted Rita file charges and take the girls and leave the house.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Rita. Dip out that one. That's okay. Rita, however, refused to be involved with Jeffrey anymore and disappeared before filing charges. So yet again, Jeffrey escaped charges. God damn it. So that's Jeffrey's background. That's him like evading. Like he could have been in prison this whole fucking time had the women come forward. But we're not blaming the women. We're just blaming the fact that they're blaming the justice system because they've women see it all the fucking time where they're like, why aren't you believing my friend? Why aren't you believing my sister? Why aren't you believing my mother? So aren't you believing me? Yeah, why aren't you believing me? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So we're still putting resources into locking people up for smoking weed, but in the meantime, having monsters like this running around the streets.
SPEAKER_04So, Jeffrey's been free this whole time. He's only spent like a week in jail on aggravated kidnapping charges before those chargers were thrown out for slitting up road.
SPEAKER_01Thank you for tuning in to part one of Torture Terrors. We upload all of our two part episodes the same day. So feel free to click on the next episode to get the second half. Okay, bye.
