How A Small-Town Car Club Built A Big-State Community Event
The roar of engines is just the opening note. What started as a handful of car lovers swapping stories in the 1970s has become a weekend that fills Bowman’s Main Street, books every hotel, and draws families from across the Upper Midwest. We sit down with Ryan Shear and Kevin Hilton from the Dakota Territory Car Club to share how a leadership reset and a back-to-basics approach transformed a small-town show into a regional anchor between Bismarck-Mandan and Cool Deadwood Nights.
We dig into the club’s secret sauce: show up, help out, and make it easy for people to belong. Membership swelled from a few dozen to nearly 200, with more than half joining for the social life as much as the chrome. Along the way, the club turned community need into action—staffing parades, serving burgers at show-and-shines, running indoor trunk-or-treat when the weather bites, and raising over $14,000 in one evening for a local medical benefit. That service-first mindset powers a weekend designed for neighbors and travelers alike: Friday night socials with pre-registration and vehicle previews, a Saturday morning breakfast, streets lined with cars, and kids’ games that keep the youngest gearheads smiling.
We also spotlight the classic car auction that now caps at 50 lots for quality and pace. It’s a Main Street spectacle that draws bidders from across the country and sends cars to new garages far beyond county lines. When the sun drops, the stage lights up for a free concert funded by local donors and sponsors—a promise that keeps the event welcoming and the sidewalks packed. Expect practical details on dates, how to pre-register for free until June, where to consign for the sale, and why this weekend has become a can’t-miss stop on the summer calendar.
Love what we’re building? Subscribe, share this with a friend who loves classic cars, and leave a quick rating or review so more people can find the show and join us on Main Street.

Welcome to America's Land Auctioneer. I'm Jim Stabby, your host for this Saturday morning. And it's been a cool week for everybody. A little bit of snow, uh, cold weather, had a little rain here during the end of the week, middle of the week, I should say. But uh Piffers got a lot of things going on, folks. Uh go to Pipers.com, check out basically you can check out every sale we got, and we've got sales already going into next year that we're booking. Some of them aren't on the site yet. They will be by the end of next week. But a lot of things happening. We got a big sale uh that's just completed over at down at Sioux Falls, Worthing, South Dakota. Great machinery sale there. We got one coming up on Monday. Uh, the online and live auction of machinery. Don't forget that one. And that's uh the Carlson uh retirement has also included that out of Regent, North Dakota. So get on the website, take a look, a lot of land. Uh and we've got a big land sale coming up next week, also on the 10th, I believe it is. It's uh 2,500 and some acres by marmoth. Just uh again, go to Pifers.com. But first, I'd like to welcome uh two guys that have been on here before. They're with Dakota Territory Car Club. Out of uh, well, they're out of Bowman, too. They just live right here, but uh we're all out of Bowman. But we got a lot of club members from different parts of the state and different towns. But uh, we're here to talk about the car club, uh, the car show we put on in in Bowman every year and uh what's going on with that. And and we want to back up here just a little bit. Let's talk a little bit about the car club and and where it came from and you know who started and who helped finish and to get things going, but who got it to this part we're at right now? So let's talk a little bit about the beginning of the car club.
SPEAKER_01:Um thanks for having us again. Um I guess the car club was started in the mid-70s, I believe. It's mid to late seventies. Um it started just with a group of guys that that um they they wanted to start a club for cars, obviously. So so it started with a small group, and I think your dad was one of them to help with that. So um and it's progressed from there. It started over, I believe, in the Headinger areas where originated at.
SPEAKER_03:You know, back then there was a lot of guys that you know there's always been car guys, but you know, it was kind of a group of farmers, and uh and there was a highway trollman, uh Ekman over in Headinger. I think he was involved in some of that. But uh these guys were they loved the old cars, and of course their old cars are different than the old cars that we think of in today's world, but uh you know they got that started. Um, and then you know, it grew to putting on some car shows.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, yep, it sure did. And it went from the smaller shows, I think. I'm not sure exactly how big they were in the beginning, but now I mean we progressed to taking up most of the main street and booming here.
SPEAKER_03:You know, and it started uh I remember a couple of times it it used to be in just in the the parking lot of the one bank, and and that's all the cars they had. Then they went out to the the oh out west of town to the park. And there's some trees out there and had some nice shade, and and you know, I don't know how many cars they were getting, and I'm gonna say 40, 50 cars probably uh at the very most. And then then it grew a little bit bigger. Then they went to the park in in Bowman, which was a beautiful spot for it. Um, you know, a lot of trees and and shelters there, and and it would always seem to be hot, you know. Um, but they had a lot of nice room there and a lot of area, and so it progressed to what we're seeing now. When you say Main Street was full, it was full. I mean, it goes from the Napa on the south end of Main Street, and of course we had cars clear all the way to the end of Main Street. We had to leave that one block open for the fire trucks in case there's any anything going on. But uh other than that, it was a it was uh it's grown so big that we get people just calling to say, hey, when is your car show?
SPEAKER_01:Yep, we do. I mean, we have people that book hotel rooms right after right after our event for the next year. So I mean it's it's it's exciting and impressive.
SPEAKER_03:You know, with uh other things going on, and I'm gonna ask Kevin uh a few things. You know, your your dad was involved in a lot of this. Absolutely. Um and uh you know they had a lot of they had a very nice collection here in town, but you know, uh we had a good group of guys running it, and just like any other um organization, people get burned out, you know. You you just you do it so long, and everybody says, well, you know, they're doing a great job, let's just keep them in there. Well, after a while, people get burned out, and and uh, you know, so it kind of had a changing of the guard here probably four years ago, I guess. Um kind of explain how that went and then what happened after that with that first car show, and then how it kind of grew up into this big one.
SPEAKER_01:So, like you said, I guess and Kevin can chime in too if he wants, but um we are the first we had an election because everyone was kind of getting burnt out, like you said. So um I became president, Kevin was secretary treasurer, he's still secretary. Um then we had a new vice president. Basically, there's a whole new whole new group of people running it. And I believe we had three weeks to before our next government. Three weeks, so we we did all that in three weeks and had one of the biggest car shows that we've ever had.
SPEAKER_03:You know, it's pretty impressive, and then you know, I want to thank all those people that were on the boards uh the years before because they're the ones that really established the base for this thing, and then and we still have a good base that they established, and you know what, they're still coming to the car shows, they're still, you know, um, but they were like they're relaxed a lot more now, they don't have to worry about everything. But uh, so thank you to those guys. But now you see, you know, that first car show was three weeks that you guys put together. I remember you called me and asked about help MC, you know, gonna, and I said, yeah, because I'd been doing it before. But you look at how that thing grew even then. I mean, we run out of room instantly down at the park. And why that was, I don't know. Um, or you know, maybe you advertise in a little different area, but uh it was just a pack place. We didn't have we had one food vendor, didn't couldn't take care of the whole place down there. So, you know, how did you you know when you come out of that, you gotta have meetings right afterwards. But when you come out of that, I think you guys are even overwhelmed with what happened.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, big time, yeah. And like I said, it's important to have those meetings afterwards. I mean, we always we that's something we've done ever since we took it over. If you have your follow-up meeting within a week or two afterwards, that way you can review everything and see what went right and what were went wrong because there's always room for improvement. Yes, it really is.
SPEAKER_03:And you know, there's a lot of cooperative efforts um with everybody in the in the the city, the county, other clubs helping. Um, but when you you think of everything, you know, there's a lot that goes on to putting these car clubs or shows together. And you know, you guys do a lot of that legwork. You go to a lot of other car shows, you go to uh places and and just hand out flyers to everybody.
SPEAKER_01:Yep. Um usually Kevin and I we travel together to a lot of different car shows and we take up to 30 cars to some of these the members. Um that's probably the best PR that you can have. Yeah, it really is because you get out there and it got her name out there. That's essentially what got people to come.
SPEAKER_03:You know, and you kind of go all over, but you know, during the summertime, you you know, you we go to New England for um their little days up there, but over the 4th of July, Headiner um invited everybody over with and let's talk about going over to Headinger and how that transpired.
SPEAKER_01:So uh actually the first year that we took over, Headinger does their well, they do a few different events that we try to attend, but they're July 4th, they have a big parade and fans and stuff over there. So we went over there, we always run in their parade. Um and we spent the weekend over there and just Yeah, it was a good time, and usually if we go anywhere, if anyone needs any help, we're more willing to jump in and help too.
SPEAKER_03:And that's what everybody has noticed that we're willing to jump in and help as a group. It's just not you know one or two guys, but the whole group's willing to help. And you know, going to these other places, but you know, you you you you've come over to Scranton, you've been to um New England, go to Verbaker, Montana, you're going to Buffalo, bison, lemon area, uh, Elgin. I mean, you guys, it takes up a lot of your time during the summertime, but you're out promoting what we're gonna do in in uh in August, excuse me, July. And uh let's first talk about the date here a minute, what uh what the date is in July.
SPEAKER_01:So it's always on the same weekend. It's the last Saturday of July, is our event. Um, so this year would be July 25th, I believe. Um last year we kind of went to uh almost a two-day, day and a half type deal, and that worked very well. I think it's gonna turn into being a whole two-day event down the road here as we add more stuff.
SPEAKER_03:You know, uh, somebody asked me last year, and I said, you know, your event is really growing, but how did you ever think about getting between the the Mandan uh car show, Mandan, Bismarck Mandan one, and then Cool Deadwood Nights? And I said, I have no idea. I don't know if these guys planned that or if it was just a date that was open and we went with it, but it's always been at the end of July, our car show. But um, people said that works perfect for for a lot of these guys, you know, they're going all these other places, but Bowman gives them a perfect place to go to in between those two big shows.
SPEAKER_01:Um, yeah, because I believe it's always been that as far as I can recall.
SPEAKER_02:So I and typically there's nothing that occurs that weekend, it's it's our weekend, it's historically always been. So for those that want to plan, and then the of course, like you mentioned, the location, yeah, it's the only thing between Bismarck and Deadwood. So it fits right in. The size and the scope is there. So for those people that are interested in in seeing a large-scale show, this is the one to go to.
SPEAKER_03:It is a very large scale, and we'll talk about that coming up in our second segment here um as we're getting down to our last minute. But uh, I want to again thank you guys for being in here. We've got three more segments to hang on to, but you know, I've got a few bills to pay with uh let's talk about um Pipers here a minute. Whether you're buying or selling land, equipment, and real estate, trust the team that's built on experience and results. Pipers auction and realty and land management. Their farm and ranch auctioneers, landbrokers and land managers are the best in the business. Visit Pipers.com today because when it comes to auctions and land sales, nobody does it better. Folks, get on there and take a look. We've got a 6,900-acre ranch that's coming up for sale in in March. We've got the 2,500-acre one coming up here uh next week, uh, this coming week, I should say, on the 10th of December. Go to Pipers.com, take a look. We'd be glad to help you out. Call anybody uh that's on our list of Pipers, guys, and we'd be glad to help you out. And we'll be right back. I'm Jim Tabby, your host for this Saturday morning. I've got some guests here from Bowman, North Dakota, and I got Ryan Shear and Kevin Hilton from the Dakota Territory Car Club. And uh there we're talking about what we're doing for this next year and uh and a lot of things the car club does that people probably don't know that we do. You know, we we uh we do a lot more things than just uh go to car shows and and uh and put on uh you know some events, but let's talk about some of the events that you guys do put on and and how we raise money for people in our community or uh you know there's organizations that need money that we've been helping with. So let's talk about that a little bit.
SPEAKER_01:Sure. Yeah. Um, so as far as events go, I mean, we we help out over in Scratch with community days now. Um whatever wherever anyone needs us, we're there. So um we started that this last year to help out over there. Um we just actually helped with an event over in Baker here in November. It's the wild game feed over there. And we took probably three, three of us probably over there. Um and we were there Friday, Saturday, and some of us came Sunday, so to help out over there. Um so I mean the events were we try to like we talked before, we try to get to all these different events, and we're not there just to participate, we're there to help. Right.
SPEAKER_03:So you know there's a lot of things there, and before we talk about some of these other events, and and I know it it's the same thing in all these communities. There's getting to be less and less people to help. So when we say we're coming over with the cars and we're gonna have a group there to help, and I'm gonna say help serve food, um, we come. Now the the baker won the wild game feed. Um, I was very impressed with the turnout we had with our club to help. That's a huge event over there anyway. But uh with our car club to to help out with that, and they and um you know we had people carrying guns. We had, I mean, it was just running different uh gaming tables and and um just helping out. Um, you know, it was it's a fun event, it's a long event for everybody, but we took I like you said, there's about 30 people. We took that picture and I couldn't believe how many people were actually there wearing our car club sweatshirts or t-shirts. Um, but that's what we do as a group. Um, we want to be involved in the communities.
SPEAKER_01:We do, yeah. And I think that's very important because, like you said, it's getting less and less the amount of people that get involved with groups or the their own communities, right? So I think that's super important. That's kind of what we in the beginning in the beginning, that's kind of what we strive for is to become more community oriented. Right. And we have made a lot of progress, and I'm very, very happy.
SPEAKER_03:Yes. And you you know the the little bins, you know, the show and shine out at the Bronson supermarket, and we're serving burgers to people and raising money for uh different organizations or or whatever we're doing there. But um people like that, they like coming out there when they see, and I'm gonna say there's 40-50 vehicles there, and we can't take up the whole parking lot. Somebody's got to save room for shopping, but uh that's pretty impressive when you go out there and and you know everybody's cooking burgers, and we got our whole crew helping out, and and uh pretty impressive what happens there. And you know, we we go to Rain for the show over there, we go to New England, we go up to Amazon. I mean, uh we try to hit these outlier towns, and and people like it when they see the vehicles come rolling in.
SPEAKER_01:They do, yeah. And I think at this point they all look forward to us coming every year, too. I mean, Amazon, we go up there with their burgers and brats. We go up there each Friday, they have it, so it's two Fridays. Um, and that's that's always a fun time, and I think they they look forward to us showing up. Um like we'll go back to what we do locally here for our little events. Like I said, the Bronsons one, that's it. Started out as being a fundraiser, but now it's more of just a community feed, and everyone gets to walk around and look at cars and it's the fun afternoon. Um then we do our Halloween event out at the four seasons. So on Halloween we have a trunk retreat and then we feed everyone before they go out trick or treating.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah. Yeah. You know, and I I hear a lot of things about that. And of course, this year it was cold. And we're we're very fortunate in Bowman, North Dakota, Bowman County, that we have the facilities out at the fairgrounds to house about anything we need to do. And that was held inside um down there, and you had you had some vehicles inside, and and um, but feeding these kids and and I've heard so many good things about that. The kids loved it, you know, and and you know, it's not about charging anybody money. Give you know, you're giving out some hot dogs to these kids, and and but it's about being involved in the community, and that one there is a huge one that you guys helped with for for many years.
SPEAKER_01:Yep, that was a big void that I saw that needed to be filled because we always used to have like games and stuff on Halloween for the kids to go through, especially because we're in North Dakota, it's cold here usually by then. Um so that that went away, and that was a void that there was nothing happening there. So we started up as truck retreat and just usually do hot dogs or hamburgers if you're we did something a little different. But um, yeah, it gives people come in there and they hang out, it's nice and warm. And this year there's a haunted house right next door to us, so that kind of co-oped with us, and it worked out really good.
SPEAKER_03:You know, and and Kevin, I want to ask you a few things on this. You know, you're you're always one of the first ones to always jump in and help. I mean, everybody is in the car club, but they always say, you know, you let's get her going, you know, I'll help them do what we got to do. But when you're in a community like this, it's pretty easy to do that, to jump in. But with the events that you guys do, I should say we um do, um, you know, you guys are busy many weekends when you could be doing something else. But I'm gonna use you for example, Kevin. Your your son, your your wife, your daughter are coming to a lot of these events, so it's kind of a family event for you.
SPEAKER_02:Absolutely. Um, I would say changing dynamics, Jim. You've seen it in the auction business, we're seeing it here. Um, three years ago, we had 30-some members in this club. I looked this morning, we've got 192 members in this club as of right now. Yeah, and the dynamics have changed. You know, it used to be a group of people that had nothing but interest in cars, and now we're seeing more of the social aspects coming out. Right. You know, um, most of our members don't own a car. Right. Over 50% of them do not own a car. They're involved in this club for the social aspects. It's a community-oriented group, is what it is. I would say more so than a car club.
SPEAKER_03:Right.
SPEAKER_02:And uh I think that shows when we host our events, you know, it doesn't matter what city we're showing up to. People are are coming out, they're coming out in support, they're uh signing up to be a member of this club, and it's the social portion of it that I think is is starting to uh show more of itself as opposed to just die-hard car people.
SPEAKER_03:Right. And you know, in all these communities, everybody's got to work together anymore. Um, and everybody's getting hit by the same thing. But you know, we did a medical benefit for a gentleman this last year, and you know, and yeah, he was a car club member, and and uh, but he's also a very good member in our community, him and his wife are. And we thought, you know, we need to help these guys out. Um, and I tell you what, that went over tremendous. So talk about that event for a minute before we get ready for the next segment.
SPEAKER_02:That was a great event. Um, I think we had raised over$14,000 in a few hours on one evening. Um, you know, the gentleman we did it for, he had been a member of the club, um, doesn't own a car, but he was in it for the social aspects. And then right after that, we were asked if we would host one for another young man in our community that has cancer issues. Uh, you know, it's a it's a good instrument. Yeah, it's a good way to get information out to people to let them know what we're doing. Right. They see what we support within these communities and they come and support us.
SPEAKER_03:And when you see 40, 50 of our members at all these events, um, out of the 190, yeah, a lot of them don't live in the area, but out of that, um, that's very impressive. And sometimes we got more than that. But you know, we're gonna we're gonna move into that in the next segment, just talk some more about that. But again, I'm Jim with Pipers, uh, the host for this Saturday morning. And we have we're looking for, if you're looking for professional auction service or expert land management, Pipers auction realty and land management delivers proven success in the Midwest. With the best farm and our Anch auctioneers and brokers in the industry, they'll help you get the top dollar. Visit Pipers.com. And uh, I tell you what, you you gotta you gotta go to our website. We've got a lot of nice properties up for sale, but go to Pipers.com because nobody does it better. Folks, we're gonna come back here in this next segment and talk with Ryan Shear and Kevin Hilton of the Dakota Territory Car Club. And uh I tell you what, folks, just uh get ready for a good time and and uh these guys will talk about the car club and we'll be ready for the next segment. We'll be right back. Welcome back to America's Land Auctioneer. I'm Jim Stabby, your host for this Saturday morning. And we got Ryan Sheer, Kevin Hilton here from the Bowman Car Club. It's called the Dakota Territory. Um, we do include uh anybody from the whole upper Midwest territory. We have members from all over the country, but people want to support that. When they come here and come to our car show, you know, they say, Well, what's the membership? I want to help out. I mean, it's unbelievable how many people sign up to be a member because they see when they walk down that street and they see we've got 50 car club members working during that car show or more, and it takes a lot, there's probably even more than that because of our when you do the uh down at the four seasons, we got things going on there. But uh it takes a lot more than that. So people are very impressed to how we're all we all like to get involved. Now let's get back to talking about what we do in a community, and uh we'll uh we'll go halfway through that and then and uh then we'll start moving on to what we do in the community today and and what we're striving for this next uh next couple months. So we have these fundraisers. Um we have people, you know, it does. I mean, when you raise$14,000 in a community like ours on a couple hour um walk or whatever we did on on the streets, that's unbelievable, and it tells you how generous everybody is, but somebody had to instrument all this.
SPEAKER_01:Yep. So um basically we between Kevin and I we kind of ramrod everything and put it all together, but I mean they're these fundraisers are simple enough to put together. I mean, it takes really nothing, just some advertising and go have your event. I mean, we do a walking or walking poker run or poker walk is usually what we do for and people show up. We have members that show up. There's people out of the community that shows up there in the last one. I think we had people from Dickinson and they show up and support it. Right. Clear from Fargo.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, family from Fargo showed up for it.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah. So I mean that tells you we're doing uh, you know, a lot of things right in the community. And you know, we we've had some growing pains. I mean, don't I mean we talk about that every every meeting in every month about how can we improve and how do we kind of get away from what letting this happen, and then we try to build and make things better for for every event we do um in the community, whether it's uh you know a fundraiser or or if we had the trunk retreat or you know the the brats out at uh in burgers out at uh Bronsons, but it's always a fun event, and when you see people there, just it's it's a fast-paced world. And when you get people just to come and sit down, they may not see their neighbor for about a month, and all of a sudden they get to come and sit down at the grocery store and look at cars, but sit down and and there they are having uh lunch right next to them. And that's what's bad with this world anymore. No one takes time to sit and visit with their neighbors, or everybody's in such a hurry, we got to do this, got to do that, and we're all guilty of it. But we're trying to slow the pace down in southwest North Dakota and provide some of that where everybody's a neighbor again, and we're trying to be good neighbors to everybody in our community.
SPEAKER_01:Yep, and like Kevin said, the social aspect of this type of thing is very important, and he can hit on that some more if you want to do.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, I think it's huge. And you know, there again, going back to changing dynamics, it's not just just with us and our organization, you're seeing it in your own. Yes. Um, you know, and there's a turnover, a younger crowd that's that's starting to appear that you know wasn't there say 10 years ago even.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, and you know, every time you see something new or somebody new wanting to join, I mean, it's just kind of fun to watch them uh in there. You know, they're they're really happy to be a part of something, and you know, especially proud of something that everybody can be proud of. I mean, the the events we do, but uh we do it for everybody, it's not just for us. I mean, yeah, we like vehicles, you know, but we also want to do it for our whole tri-state area. You know, people could call from uh Newell if they needed help, we come down and help them out. Um, E. Kalaka, Montana, you know, we're planning on going down there uh this next year, but there's places we need to go and we can help out with, but there's a lot of things going on in the future in our club, and and I want to just bring up what we're doing, you know, for what's coming up in the for the car show and the car auction we want to mention is the same day with Pifers, we do that. Um we're uh we're a sponsor and we're a great uh promoter of this event. We we like things happening in our small towns. Um, and when we bring in the amount of people that we have the last couple years, when you know there's not a hotel room left and all the campsites are filled, you know you're doing something right. So let's talk about the upcoming events. And I want to, first of all, we touched on it, somebody might have been Kevin to you, but it we're turning it kind of into a two-day event. Yep. And let's talk about what we're trying to do on Fridays, and then then we get into the big car show.
SPEAKER_01:So it just every year we try to add something just to keep it keep it going and moving forward. Um we're we're probably on the day and a half event, is what it is gonna be in 26 years. But on Friday one of the big things we started this last year, we did a like a social in the evening. We had food catered in there and just put an atmosphere for people to sit and visit. I mean our van showed up that we had, they showed up and they sat and visited with everyone. I mean, they was put a few of the auction cars in there, the higher ones. Yeah, give people something to look at and they can visit you know eat.
SPEAKER_03:What was nice is we we have that facility, and I'd like to thank Darwin out at the fairgrounds because they help us out tremendously, but we have that ability out there to use that. But we use that as kind of our general meeting area, you know, where people go and register their vehicles, and we thought, why not have a reception and have serve them some food? They're coming a long way. A lot of these people are coming a long ways with vehicles, and let's sit out there and and uh socialize for the evening. And this last year was our first one. I was so happy with the turnout. Um, you know, the most of the food was gone, and and but the people sat there and just visited. And you could sit at any table, so everybody really kind of mingled with, you know, it just wasn't your buddies sitting together. They were talking with the car club out of Spearfish, another one out of Dickinson, and and uh it was a great event. I I don't know how we can keep improving on that, but there's ways we can improve. But that takes the pressure off a lot of things, especially for registration. Registration is a huge deal, and and you guys deal with that more than I do. But boy, you it's nice to get everybody registered, but it's also nice for them just to sit down.
SPEAKER_01:Yep. So we start pre-registration. That's actually open right now if you go on our website, it's Dicoba Territorial Car Club.com. You can register for free until June. Um, however many cars you want to bring. And then like you can go back to the Friday night thing. We had registration set up in there, so you could register your car that night and get it done and over with. We also have a spot for membership if you want to become a member, or we have merchandise too that we sell as and the membership I think that's big when we do stuff like that because people they enjoy talking to everyone and they get to know us and everyone else there. And we've got a lot of new members out of that. I think we're probably hitting six states probably that we have members out of now.
SPEAKER_03:More so you know, and you you think about that, and and the one thing that we added um was this auction, and now a lot of people are coming to see this auction, you know, because we we do limit it uh this year, it's gonna be limited to 50 vehicles. I think last year was 43 vehicles, and we said, but we have to have them all in early. So you you know, you get a hold of any Piper representative, whether they're on the eastern side of the state or or something, um get that car registered or that pickup so we can have them on our website so people can take a look. But when we've added that dynamics to things, we brought a few more people in, and a lot of them are bringing their vehicles to show, and then they're bringing an extra one to put in the car auction. And it's getting to be a very, very big event. Um, we didn't know how it was gonna work. We were kind of worried. I think the first year we had 30 some vehicles, and we thought, man, well, we're gonna have trouble selling these. Well, all of a sudden, boom, uh, they sold very well. You know, second year they've done really well. So now we want to limit it though. We we we've got so much time in a day to do this as a group, and we got a lot of other things going on, so that's why we're limiting the amount of vehicles to 50. Um, you know, it's gonna take an hour and a half to get them auctioned off, maybe two at the most. But uh, and we do that right down Main Street of Bowman, uh, right on that north end. So all the cars are sitting there for everybody to look at, just like anything else. But that brings a different dynamics to our car show.
SPEAKER_01:That's a wonderful addition to what we do. I mean, I think it's fantastic, and it's not just local people buying them, you can sell them. I mean, they've got they went all over the country.
SPEAKER_03:Yep. You know, so it makes it fun. But you know, we've got uh about two minutes left here in this this one here. But I what really impresses me is that car show. I mean, you get people, we have people in different areas working, but when all of a sudden you see everything lined up on the on the street of Bowman, um, up and down and on the side streets, and and uh that's kind of a huge deal, you know. A lot of lot of cars, a lot of dollars worth of cars.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, um, it impresses me too. Sit back and look when they're all lined up in there, and it yeah, it's an impressive site.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, you know, and and I will say this, it's it's been a fun group to be a part of. You know, anybody that's joined said, wow, you guys do have fun. I mean, we get down to business, but then it's it's time to have fun and and to do some of these things. But again, it's we're bringing people to the community, the tri-state area. You know, they're they're spending money here at the hotels, uh, food, uh, we got the gas stations and and all that. So, I mean, it's it's one of those things where we're we're trying to help our community also.
SPEAKER_01:Yep, and it's brought people here that probably wouldn't have even come here or stopped here. They come and spend the whole weekend. They do. They bring people in here.
SPEAKER_03:And, you know, a lot of them are all repeaters from, you know, yeah, they used to come when we had the 40-50 cars at a time, but now they're bringing more vehicles. You know, the the Dickinson and the the I'm gonna say the the hills area have been huge for us. And uh, we do appreciate everything they've done. But you know, we're gonna wrap up the next session with uh what we're going on, what's going on, timing of everything, uh the music that we have. But when it comes to buying and selling farmland, ranches, and equipment, experience matters. Pipers auction realty and land management has a team industry leading professionals ready to serve you. This is America's Land Auctioneer. I'm Jim Staby, your host for this Saturday morning. Got some guests on, Kevin Hilton from Bowman, Ryan Shear from Bowman. Uh, they are active members and on the board of directors of the Dakota Territory Car Club. And we're talking about uh upcoming events. And folks, we want to let you know we're trying to get the word out early on registering your vehicles or getting them uh signed up for the auction and uh for this this summer. And now let's move to the the date. Um you we're talking July 25th, correct? Okay, and and we're working on uh, you know, we'd love to bring in great music. Um as you know, in the last couple years we've had some outstanding music play here on Main Street of Bowman. Uh, we're looking to be bigger and better. And and folks, we do all this. Um, we go out and get uh people to, you know, and I'll how can I say this without you know, they they we ask them for donations, and people are willing to when they see what's going on here, they're so willing to to do this. And let's talk a little bit about asking for these donations and then you know, and if somebody wants to donate to help to this car show, and we want to make this thing bigger.
SPEAKER_01:Sure. Um, so most of the cost with the show is our evening entertainment. We have we always I mean put on a show, everyone enjoys that. It's it's the end of July, so it's hot. Yeah, but as soon as the sun goes down, we have a stage right in the middle of everything, yeah, and we've had amazing bands for the last couple years. It's just been fantastic. And um these donations that we go out and get from businesses, and there's people that donate to um they they make that entertainment free for everyone. Right. There's no skate chargers, no cover fee, nothing. You walk up there in front of the stage and it's all free. I mean, we got probably 12, 13 food vendors that are cooking food into the evening. We've got drink vendors, I mean, and but it's all free.
SPEAKER_03:It is, and and that's one thing I I want to stress is we want this to be an event for everybody. Um, whether you're 80 years old or 90 years old, or you're 10 years old or five years old. We've got stuff for everybody up and down Main Street. We got kids' games, but to be able to put this on, it takes uh quite a bit of money. But we get we've got some great people that donate and companies that are willing to do that because we want to put on a free show for everybody. And when we say free, we mean free. I mean you don't have to pay this cover to come in to uh to watch some of these bands and listen to them. Um, you know, the only thing is that you gotta pay for the food of the vendors on uh on the street or whatever you're buying, but we want everybody to have fun.
SPEAKER_01:Yep, that's I think that's what's important, yeah. Um, and as we move forward with our entertainment, we try to get bigger and bigger names. And I mean, I'm excited for this year. We don't have everything set in stone yet, but we have some pretty good stuff coming forward, I think.
SPEAKER_03:So you know, so folks, just uh watch uh go to Dakota Territory Club's uh website or go to Piffers and then we'll have that on our website in the next oh probably week to ten days uh with the car auction and the events gonna go on. But um keep listening for it on uh on the radios and advertising and and uh or get on the Facebook page of you what's our Facebook, just Dakota Territory?
SPEAKER_01:Dakota Territory Car Club Facebook or Instagram, we have that too. Yeah, we'll try to post anything going on, and we'll we'll be unveiling our entertainment and what else we have going on as the winter goes forward.
SPEAKER_03:And you know, we uh we get together at the end of the year um and have our final meeting and and then we have our our Christmas party we put together. But um, you know, we do our own cooking, and a lot of times people always cater stuff in, but we like to do our own cooking, and and there's a crew of us that like to sit out by the smoker and and have a few beverages and smoke the the food, but it's it gets to be very good. But we get a lot of people that want to come to that that that last meeting, our Christmas party, and they enjoy that. It's sit around and and again, we're not charging arm a leg. I mean, your membership covers some of it, but we still got to cover some of that if we're using Prime Rib or whatever. But it's a good session just to sit down and visit and do a recap of what how the year went.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, and our Christmas party, that's always fun. And yeah, we try to throw some games in there and we have giveaways and it's just a lot of fun.
SPEAKER_03:You know, so you sit back, I want to ask Kevin about this when we got a few minutes left here, but um when when you guys were putting this together, you know, I come in I come in late to the game and and it's been helping out, but um did you ever realize that it would turn out like this to be the as big? I mean, we always wanted it to be good, but the volume of cars and people, we do have 1,500 people on Main Street, it's amazing. Um, and we're hoping for more. But Kevin, when you guys are doing all this, what'd you guys think? You know, can we get 100 cars?
SPEAKER_02:Ryan said uh earlier, you know, when we took this over the first year, we had three weeks until a car show. Yeah, we didn't have a a real good direction as to where you know where we were gonna go with that. Um, at this point in time, this club is basically taking over its own direction. Yeah, you know, people come to our events, people join that club. Um, it it essentially runs itself. Everybody pitches in and helps. Um, you know, last year we had uh, I guess I didn't look at the the official roster, but I I think around 400 and some cars that showed up for our car show. And at least 50% of those brought a spouse or somebody with them, if not more. So that's 600 people. And if we had a minimum of four to five hundred people that came to look, that's a thousand people. Now let's add the classic car auction in the Piper's annual classic car show, you know, and an auction. If we've got 50 cars there, and the spectators and bidders that show up for that, uh had to be at least 300 standing there last year feeding on those cars. Uh, you know, you guys sold cars that wouldn't have brought that kind of money at Farrett Jackson or down cool Deadwood Nights. I know because I watched him sell. Yeah so you know, all of a sudden we doubled the population of Bowman in an afternoon. And you know, the people show up on their own. The advertising, of course, you certainly have to, you know, to do that. But um, but it's it's to the point where it's running itself. So it's it's got to be a lot less stressful for Ryan and I.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah. You know, and it's really fun to see how everything transpires from start to finish. But you know, the last year was our second year, really setting up on Main Street. And after doing the first year, it was pretty easy, you know, of okay, we had every we everybody knew what to do and we're doing everything. And uh, you know, the only thing different is we're gonna probably move the the auction in a little different location, but we like where we got the stage uh for the music, and that's kind of our center point right there. And it's a long ways up and down Main Street, but uh a lot of beautiful vehicles, and and you know, and then we have a group that comes in, uh, you know, the Mossbrookers, and we always give the best a show, and and uh their brother Paul Mossbrooker was a big part of of this area, and and it's kind of fun to see who gets picked for that um for the show. And I got a new rockford, uh, him and his wife won this last year. So it's a lot of fun, it's a huge thing for our community. We're trying to involve more people, and we we can't forget Saturday morning is it, I think it's dollars for scholars that do the breakfast there down at the four seasons, so everybody can go in there and have some breakfast before they go down to the car show. So it's just uh one of those things that everybody's grown into it. Uh, we know it's gonna get bigger. Um, you know, we may have to uh use more side streets in the next couple years, which we're hoping. But when you bring that kind of people to town, you know they're gonna spend money, and that's why I think we're probably one of the biggest uh community-minded organizations in our area and what we do for the community. So any last thoughts? We got about a minute left.
SPEAKER_01:No, uh just we're excited for this year, that's for sure. So like Jim said, keep your eye out. You can find us on any social media or website.
SPEAKER_03:Um yeah, and it's yeah, go to Territory Car Club or Pipers.com and uh check us out. You know, it's been a great morning here with Kevin Hilton, Ryan Shear. You know, we we did it uh last summer and and now we're doing it now, trying to get everybody the voice out of what's going on. But again, thank you guys for being here. And uh again, I'm Jim with uh Pipers, your host today. I'm out of the Bowman office. Check us out down here in God's country. Go to Pipers.com, check out a lot of the land, upcoming land sales we got. We got a big one coming up, uh, 2,500 acres next week, the 10th of December.
