We go back to our roots to bring you this episode from The Lost Nosler Tapes. These were the conversations I had with Big John Nosler back in the early 2000s. These tapes were the basis on which I wrote John's story - Going Ballistic and for the next book, Bob Nosler Born Ballistic. When I found these tapes, I digitized them to save the conversations. Want more? Get the book Bob Nosler Born Ballistic. Look for it at https://www.nosler.com/born-ballistic-hardcover-book.html

And now, here's Gary Lewis. Next next on Fox. But I undersold him when I said he's code. He's far beyond code. In fact, I think he's better than he's ever been. Intellectually. Um analytically.
SPEAKER_00You have found a podcast where we talk about big game hunting around the West, around the world. We started this podcast six years ago. And one of the things we wanted to do was tell the stories from the Lost Nozzler tapes. And so those were the tapes that I had used as the basis for the book Going Ballistic. And they became the basis for the book Bob Nozzler, Born Ballistic. And today, Bob Nozzler would have been 80 years old. And so I got to thinking about Bob today. And I thought we gotta release one of these stories again. So this is Bob going blacktail hunting with Big John. This is a tale from long ago, and Big John's remembering about hunting with his son Bob the first time. And Bob's got his first deer rifle, and it's a big moment, and nothing really goes according to the plan. Let's go. In this particular episode, we're going to talk about first deer rifles and black tailed deer and a little boy and his father hunting black tails in southern Oregon. This takes us back to about 1954 when little Bob was about eight years old and Big John was about 42. You'll hear a canary in the background. That bird was there listening through all our conversations, and about 4:30 every afternoon, he would really get vocal. Stupid bird.
SPEAKER_02Bob one time a little kid bought this big over dash one. And he and I and two other guys were up on the green springs. Yes, I've been on. And uh we were back up in in there. Saw quite a few deer, never shot any. Bob was tagging along with me and he he said, Dave, there's a deer right in there. Yeah. So we w went on and we had parked the car in a whole rock for Douglas to get that particular rock out of there. So we ended up way up on top. It was a speak where they pulled the dirt off and down. I said, Bob, do you think we can go down there? And and he said, Well, I think so. I said, if we don't, we're gonna have to walk about a mile and a half to go around to get to the pickup. And the other two guys were hunting with and Bob said, Well, let's slide down. So I I had given Bob a brand spanking new little rifle. A zero rifle. He was about eight, I guess. So anyway, we started down and we kicked up a yellow jacket. I kicked up the yellow jacket in the nest, and they just caught there by the hundreds and got on Bob. I never even knew they were there. Oh I I saw Bob slapping himself, but we were sliding at that time pretty fast, but I was uh trying to stop and catch him and which I find he did, and then I saw what was happening. He stood on down. He was absolutely covered with yellow jackets, and just staying in the yellow. He I yanked his shirt off and stripped him down and yellow jackets under everything. And I I was just afraid it might not be able to make it the end of it. I I I don't have any idea how many times he was gone. But anyway, I got whole pain's and I said he said, I'll be right out. Come out and with Bob Orney said, Let's get him in the bathtub. And we pour in a whole bunch of bacon sort, got him in there, and I guess the bacon sort of tight took some of the burn off. His theory was to bark like a dog, eh? I I'd seen other guys do that too. And um he said you bark like a dog and you a lot of the you pass and stay bedded down and you never get to see 'em. And I know that's a fact. He said you bark like a dog and they'll scared you don't. And they'll run ahead of you and you let you see him, but uh sure the sound is funny, and it's marginal.
SPEAKER_03They don't talk about that now, nor either do they had black sales over there. They're the sneakiness highest thing you ever saw. I killed a really big one up there by Lincoln. Oh, yeah. Um off the Green Strings Road. With a 95 grain partition. You did, huh? I'll be done.
SPEAKER_00One of the funny things about this story is that doctor, you know, him calling up this this old doctor to come over. He didn't take him down to the emergency room because you you called your friends who's gonna help you. And so this doctor comes over and they get little Bob down in the bathtub and they pour in the baking soda, and that's probably the best thing they that they could have done. Because his life was in danger. You know, when he's telling that story, you know, there's there's 60 years have gone by when he's telling this story, and it's kind of taken the immediacy out of it, but that they could have lost their little boy right there in that moment. Thanks for joining me here and uh talking to Big John, you know, kind of from the past with these old hanging out with you today.com. Thanks to our sponsors, Nazword Incorporated, Warren Gulf Mount, Camp Chap, Voodoo, B area, Breath of the Lake Resort, Arson, Arts and Oil, T SNF, War Mat Rest, Frontier Base Bent, Dalitarian Chamber of Commerce, Bring Island, October USA, Smart, West Coast Road, Frontier Road of the High Desert Tactical.
