The Career Refresh with Jill Griffin

Self deprecating humor, when to use it or lose it

Jill Griffin Season 1 Episode 3

Humor in a professional environment can build connection and trust.  Self-deprecating humor is an art and to do it well, it takes a high level of awareness. When someone can tap into and identify the messy human experience through humor it can be very appealing. Today's episode discusses where it comes from, when it’s useful, and when to avoid it so you don't become an HR nightmare.

Show Notes: How to know if your self-deprecating humor is an issue? Here are some questions to ask yourself.

  1. How do you feel after you said the joke?
  2. How did you respond when someone laughed a little too loudly at your self-deprecating joke?
  3. Is there something about your personality or skill set that you believe should be different than it is? If so, what is it?
  4. When was the last time you gave equal time to articulating your strengths to yourself or others?
