Our guest this week is Rio Richards. Rio is a private practice therapist and a grief integration coach, specializing in helping adults navigate the profound and complex journey of loss and trauma. With a somatic and psychodynamic lens, Rio guides individuals to heal and rebuild using both the power of the mind and body for long-term resilience and change. Her mission is to help those who feel stuck and powerless in the aftermath of tragedy find their way to a new version of themselves with radical compassion and unapologetic clarity.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Finding the balance between the deeply personal experience of grief but the collective and universal experience of it too
  • The many ways society is not set up to support grievers or embrace grief as a powerful catalyst (and what we can do to change this)
  • Secondary losses and how these can often times be even more long term impactful than the primary loss, but can also be invisible to many
  • Grief anxiety and how it can change the way we orient ourselves in the world
  • The role of the nervous system in grief and the mind - body connection (why this is key to healing)
  • Loss when it doesn't involve another person but a dream, an expectation or a reality that falls short of expectations and how we can support ourselves through this very human experience

PLEASE NOTE TW: I discuss my experience with grief due to miscarriages, including a late miscarriage last year (a late miscarriage is a pregnancy loss between weeks 12 and 24). I don't go into details but since October 15th was Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, I wanted this episode to be a gift to anyone walking this painful road or a journey of infertility as well.
