Planning your maternity leave as a business owner can feel overwhelming, but with the right strategy, it becomes an empowering process. In this episode of The Mothered Business Podcast, I share my personal journey of preparing for maternity leave as a mom, business owner, and coach. Drawing on the expertise I have had in helping countless clients design customized maternity leave plans, I openly offer how I thought about strategizing my own leave as well as actionable strategies for mothers balancing entrepreneurship with impending motherhood.

Things I share about in this episode:

  • Tailored Maternity Leave Plans: How I created a a plan that aligns with my unique needs, business model, values and financial goals. One of the key things I learned through my own process is what I truly desires and how to not make that wrong for myself! It looks different to what I have supported many clients with in their own maternity leave design, and I feel SO good about how mine works for me.
  • Financial Strategy: One of the hardest things on a relationship is sleep deprivation and newborn transitions, but adding financial pressure to that is a recipe for disaster. That's why I always focus on financial strategy with clients who are prepping to take time off with their baby, and it was also one of my core focuses for my own leave. Financial stability during maternity leave is a big reason why entrepreneurship can be a conduit for more freedom if you're building your business intentionally.
  • Client Care Systems: I don't have a "passive" business model. In fact, my business is as high touch as it gets. That's why I needed to consider how to design client care while juggling postpartum and maternity leave. I share my insights on renegotiating client agreements and creating schedules that ensure seamless support for clients while allowing for personal time away.
  • Team and System Optimization: Expanding support was essential for me! Not just inside my business but also inside my home. I share why the maternity leave I designed for myself is possible and why I think periods like this can actually accelerate growth for business.
  • Balancing Motherhood and Work: This is going to be an evolving process. At the time of this recording, everything was still hypothetical in nature. Giving myself permission to evolve, change anything that's not working in reality, or be flexible around what I anticipate to work well is going to be really important for my health and the success of my work, too. Like I tell my clients, balancing motherhood and business as a CEO requires an open mind, creativity, imaginative reimagining of possibilities and a commitment to listening to that inner voice regardless of the "rules" (either you have made or have been imposed on you).  This is both practical AND a mindset piece. Ultimately, I wholeheartedly believe t
