A national holiday can remind you to be thankful, but Pentecost should remind you to be hungry. We start with Memorial Day reflections and the gift of worshiping freely, then we move straight into Acts 2 and the moment the church is born, not as a legend, but as a recorded event with a purpose and a date.
Pentecost Sunday is more than a calendar label. We talk through the Feast of Weeks, why Jerusalem was filled with people from across the nations, and how God used that gathering to set up a literal harvest of souls. When the Holy Spirit arrives, the signs are unmistakable: a sound like a mighty rushing wind, tongues like fire resting on each person, and ordinary believers “filled with the Holy Spirit.” We emphasize what the text emphasizes: power that comes from heaven, clarity that draws people in, and a message that features the mighty works of God, the gospel of Jesus.
We also address the big question many listeners carry about speaking in tongues. Acts 2 is not confusion or spiritual showing off. It’s understandable languages that make the gospel plain and prepare hearts to receive it, and we connect that to how Scripture calls the church to order and edification. From there, we bring it home: God doesn’t need your ability as much as your availability, and he can give you the words, wisdom, and boldness to share Christ right where you are.
If you want a grounded, Scripture-based conversation about the Holy Spirit, Pentecost, spiritual gifts, and living on mission, this one is for you. Subscribe, share with a friend, and leave a review, then tell us what stood out most to you from Acts 2.

Memorial Day Gratitude And Worship
SPEAKER_01Well, hey Life House family, welcome back to our Monday on a Tuesday holiday week. So coming to you a day later, we hope and pray everybody had an awesome Memorial Day this Sunday. Man, we got bagpipes, and you know, I think just an opportunity to reflect on all God has done for our country. People who've given their lives for the cause. So we're here on Tuesday, but it was a great weekend, great time this Sunday. Any general reflections on that?
SPEAKER_00Just very thankful. Yeah. I just I love gathering. I love coming together, worshiping the Lord, lifting him up, magnifying him. And yeah, we have so much to be thankful for. We're able to worship the Lord freely, in spirit and in truth, but freely in ways that other nations and other countries around the world are not. And that is in part due to the sacrifice of many soldiers over the course of many years. And so we have a lot to be thankful for. And I think it's a good thing to honor who is worthy of honor. And that's really essentially what we want to do just as a nation on Memorial Day. But I think that in part as believers, we want to do that too. So yeah, but ultimately we want to honor Jesus and never honor anyone at the expense of honoring him. And I think that we did that, you know, and it was a many people were away, but hopefully they'll be back next Sunday. So yeah.
SPEAKER_01But Pentecost Sunday, and like I said, just God's timing. We're actually on Pentecost in Scripture, and it actually was Pentecost from Easter this year, so it's pretty cool.
SPEAKER_00That was kind of a cool, not coincidence, but in some ways a coincidence how this message was preached like the day of Pentecost. This was Pentecost Sunday. So 50 days on the 50th day post the Passover celebration was Pentecost. You know, and
Pentecost Timing And Our Birth Story
SPEAKER_00and this is 50, this past Sunday was the 50th day after Easter, the day we celebrated as Resurrection Sunday. So yeah, kind of a cool thing. So what happened 2,000 plus years ago when the church was born, like we love birth stories. We talked about this is our birth story as a church. So what took place here is correlated to who we are and what we do here and now. And so it's just kind of a cool thing to think about and and realize and to kind of make that connection. We're reading our birth story.
SPEAKER_01It is very cool. So just reading the scripture here are in Acts 2. Hopefully you were there yesterday, if not, catching up, says, when the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place, and suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues of as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven, and at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language, and they were amazed and astonished, saying, Are not all of these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes, and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Fergia and Pamphylia, Egypt and parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God. And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, What does this mean? But others mocking said, They are filled with new wine.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Word of God. Yeah, so this is our birth story. So right off the bat, like the context, you know, when the day of Pentecost arrived. And so, because of that statement, we know the exact day this happened, but it also ties in, I guess. So God, again, nothing's haphazard, arbitrary, coincidental, you know. But so Pentecost, the day of Pentecost, otherwise known as the Feast of Harvest or the Feast of Weeks, that was celebrated by the Jews, ancient Jews, for thousands of years, like going all the way back to Exodus, where they celebrated the harvest. So the first fruits of the harvest. So the beginning. And so tying that to every day. So there were three feasts that the Jews were, by God's law, required to go to Jerusalem to celebrate. Whether they lived in Egypt or Rome or whatever, if you're going to be obedient or devout, you were going to go back to Jerusalem and worship, you know, and give thanks and worship in this way. And so that all pointed forward to not just the harvest of wheat, like that's what they were, the harvest, that's what they celebrated literally, but it pointed forward to the harvest of souls, which Jesus really set that table. Like if you think about what he says in Matthew chapter 9
Reading Acts 2 And First Reactions
SPEAKER_00at the beginning of his earthly ministry, you know, when he said he had compassion on the crowds, the multitudes, saw them as harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd, and he told his disciples, in light of what I see, pray, therefore, in light of that, that the Lord of the harvest will send out workers into his harvest. And that's what we see happening, this harvest of souls. Like ultimately, when all is said and done on this day, the day of Pentecost, that's referred to in Acts chapter 2, 3,000 souls were added to the church. 3,000 men, women, and children believed the gospel and repented of their sins and believed, and even went so far as to declare that through baptism, we're told, at the end of Acts chapter 2. So it was an incredible day, a harvest of souls. And so that's just kind of beautiful. Pentecost literally means 50th. So that's where that word pente cost 50th comes from. Any comments about that?
SPEAKER_01Seeing God's timing, as we know God's word is so deep and so we have been, as we've talked the last few weeks, of waiting. God's saying, wait for, wait for. And so it's probably like 50 days, you know, we're waiting so long. This feels like a lot, a lot of time, but God has a purpose as we see that in our own lives so much. Of we get impatient, and we talked about that over the last few weeks of not praying, not waiting, just wanting to go. But here, what God was doing through that feast of Pentecost, there were people from all over. From all over. Peter and disciples just decided to speak in their own power. Who knows if they'd have reached anybody? Right. But God brought in all of these nations.
SPEAKER_00And so again, if you remember, so this they weren't necessarily waiting for 50 days, they were waiting for 10. So for 40 days, Jesus was with them, revealing himself alive by many proofs, teaching and talking about the kingdom of God with them. Then he ascended into heaven. But he told them, wait in Jerusalem to the promise for the promise of the Father, right? The coming of the Holy Spirit. And there's prophecies in Joel and prophecies in Ezekiel, and even Jesus himself said, I'm sending the helper, right? The Holy Spirit. And so, not just the promise of the Father, but also the promise of the Son. And, you know, with that, that when that promise is he correlated and said, you know, you'll be clothed with power from on high. Wait, you'll be baptized with the Holy Spirit, you know, and so what we see take place is exactly what that looks like, you know, how that plays out, what it meant to be clothed with power from from on high. But they were waiting for 10 days, and I I have to, you know, chuckle when I read this. As I, you if you know me, you know I have really good reflexes. I startle very easily. And so for whatever reason, I mean, I I said on Sunday, like I literally have injured myself in movies. It can even be a kid's movie, not even a suspenseful horror movie or anything. But if if there's a sound that comes out of nowhere, like if my hands are here, I've punched myself in the face and given myself a bloody nose. So if I was there pictures to prove that, yeah, no pictures, but but my wife will tell you, she will validate that, and my kids. But here in this room, I mean, they're praying fervently for 10 days. I mean, waiting, and then we're told in verse 2 they're all together in one place, all of them, the 120, that remnant, that small number, ordinary
Pentecost Feast And The Harvest Theme
SPEAKER_00people from Galilee. And then suddenly, like that's a profound word. I mean, there is, you know, drama associated with that. Like, out of, well, it's not out of nowhere. It says from heaven. This, this is a it wasn't just like a loud noise that, you know, people said, Hey, did you hear that? Or what like a gunshot? Like, what was that? Like this was and it describes it. Like the sound was from heaven, and they all knew that. A sound like a mighty rushing wind. And so a mighty, so you've seen movies where they try to depict this, and I don't know if you have, but I have, and in this room, you see like their hair blowing all over the place. I mean, it just seems so chaotic. God's not the author of confusion or chaos. Doesn't say that there was actual wind there. What it says was there was a sound like a mighty rushing wind. And so it wasn't like there was a tornado in the house. There was a profound sound, and it was mighty, like a mighty rushing wind. Mighty can also be translated as forceful or violent. So it was intense. You know, I would surmise that it would be something to the effect. Like it couldn't be denied or ignored. Maybe like a freight train or a jet engine, you know. I mean, you couldn't probably have a conversation over the sound that was there. It was profound. It filled the entire house where they were sitting. So there was this audible experience that was taking place. And I imagine they didn't just hear it, they felt it internally. But also, verse three, divided tongues like fire, as of fire. So not literal fire, but they're trying to describe something they've never seen before to people who have never seen it before, but they were there. So lights probably involved, you know, some to some degree as to what this actually looked like, appeared, and I love this, rested on each and every one of them. And so it wasn't like, you know, Tinkerbell with a wand, like ding, you know, but like abided on or sat on each and every one of them. And so no one's looking around and say, hey, did it rest on me? Did it? I don't know if it did or not. It wasn't just this moment. It sat on each one of them. They were baptized with the Holy Spirit. Like, and this was visible confirmation. Like this, this isn't just any old day. This, you know, you don't have to wonder, did this happen? Like Jesus said, you will be clothed with power from on high. And so there were these manifestations of the Holy Spirit, tangible manifestations, you know, for their benefit. Undeniable. And as such, verse 4, they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, as promised. This was the fulfillment, and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. And so this wasn't chaos, this wasn't confusion. We know that because of what continues, you know. Let's let's stop here for a moment. So there's a lot of debate about tongues.
SPEAKER_01Tongues, yes.
SPEAKER_00You know, and I don't know if we want to open that can of worms here. So in all sincerity, at Lifehouse Church, we view this as an open-handed issue, right? So there are people at our church that speak in tongues. Now that's different that what they do from what we see here. Like what we see here is they spoke in tongues that can be translated as languages. And people were hearing language, they completely understood what was being said because it says that they were speaking in their they were hearing in their own language the the mighty works of God testified of, you know, by these disciples, these Galileans. So, and what's communicated there is clearly as Galileans, people with like very thick accents were from this region, but also there weren't any like universities in in the region of Galilee, like there was in Egypt at that time or at in Alexandria, like where people educated, you know, thinkers would know and speak many different languages, but that was not the case here. These were just common people, Peter, Andrew, James, and John, fishermen. You know, what good comes from Nazareth, Mary and Jesus' brothers, you know, they were there, but they were speaking these languages, you know, at lists like all these different, you know, you know, I was chuckling because I who knows? I don't even know how to pronounce all these words, but I the only ones that I would differ from you, you said I say in verse 10, Phrygia and Pamphylia. I don't know, I can't remember, but it was different than I would say. But all these places, and I have to imagine what was so amazing. This was a miracle because these people, the end result was that people were like, we can't deny this. Like, what's going on here? Like, we need to know more. Like, what is this all about? What happened here prepared the hearts of those people to tune in and to listen to what Peter, then from verse 13, starting in verse 14, then began to preach the gospel, lifting up Jesus Christ, and they received that message because of what happened here. This was an undeniable miracle of God. They were amazed, perplexed. Like, how could this be that these common people are speaking my language and testifying so clearly and precisely? You know, I mean, I know a couple phrases in Spanish and French, you know, where's the bathroom? Or, you know, I speak a little French, or can I get a drink of water? No, they were testifying of the mighty works of God in a precise and convincing manner. They weren't fumbling
The Sound Like Rushing Wind
SPEAKER_00or pronouncing things wrong. Like, what's communicated here is the precision, and and they understood what these people, these ordinary people, were saying, and it was miraculous. So and glorious. Right.
SPEAKER_01It was Google Translate before, you know, like today we're Google. Right. But which is amazing.
SPEAKER_00You know, Google Translate's amazing.
SPEAKER_01This is, you know, this Google Translate, I can't actually speak it. You know, we're just doing that. Here they were actually gifted by the Holy Spirit, like you said.
SPEAKER_00And in a miraculous way. Right. And I have to, you know, just in kind of touching on the whole debate when it comes to speaking in tongues. Like if I heard someone speaking in tongues, you know, that wouldn't necessarily make me think that's a miracle. Like I would think, you know, okay, that person, you know, it it was, it would cause confusion. Right. That's not what's happening here. What this did was draw people in and lean cause people to lean in. Like, how do I understand? How are they speaking my language? You know, my heart language. And that's what God does. He speaks to the heart. And so these people were able, and it's so important for us to translate the Bibles, you know, into the heart language of all these unreached people groups, because there's just something about like the words they use and the phrases they use, you know, that that speaks to the heart. And so that's what was taking place here. And so, again, the three points from Sunday were we see the promise of God fulfilled, like in an undeniable way. I mean, these people, ordinary people, were clothed with power from on high, immersed, submerged with ability beyond themselves to do these things. The people of God were filled, right? God doesn't ever do anything, He doesn't sprinkle, He fills, overflowing. I can't help but think about what Jesus promised. It wasn't just the promise of the Father, but also the promise of the Son, where he said, rivers of living water will flow from you. And he said this about the Holy Spirit. I think it's in John chapter 7, if I remember correctly, where Jesus says that. These people were filled and overflowing with undeniable power. It wasn't their own ability, it was God's ability working in and through them. And God's power was featured. You know, the mighty works of God were testified of. This wasn't about the people and their experience. It was about elevating and magnifying God and what he's done. What's the mighty works of God? Just a plain and simple, the gospel. They were telling about what God had done and sending his only begotten son. And the fact that, right, Philippians chapter 2, though Jesus was in the form of God, he thought not equality with God, something to be grasped, but he humbled himself. He came on mission to die, and he died, and he conquered sin, death, and hell by raising on the third day. I mean, I'm getting chills, just thinking about it. I mean, I'm fired up and ready. But this is what they were testifying. This is what they were doing and saying and speaking with precision, not, hey, do you know where the bathroom is? The works of God were featured. And really, I think that that's kind of a takeaway for us as we minister. Like we want to point people to God, who he is, what he's done, right? It wasn't about them being lauded and applauded. Look what they can do. It's a miracle. It was look what God has done, look what he has given them the ability to do and the message that they were able to proclaim. And so, and Jesus built his church that day. It went from 120, if you go to the end of chapter two, to 3,000 plus men, women, and children like repented, they changed. They repented of their sins, called upon the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, and were saved. And it was glorious. And then we can even go on to Acts chapter 3 from there, just a lot of amazing things happening. Trevor Burrus, Jr.
SPEAKER_01Well, I think the important thing, like you say, all of them had this ability. All came, all 120, all of those who've been praying. And like you say, it brought clarity, not confusion. Like it made the works of God clear, it made salvation clear, and spoke to those people. It wasn't a, what do you say, individualistic thing, or look how spiritual these people are, but truly for the purposes of salvation. So tongues are going to be for the purpose of advancing the kingdom of God, helping people understand, not be like,
Tongues As Languages Not Confusion
SPEAKER_01what's going on here?
SPEAKER_00That's so just to kind of touch on that a little bit, and I thank you for bringing that up because uh 1 Corinthians 13 14, you know, it talks about how God is a God of order. And so it's hard for us to kind of understand and read this and understand that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. This was not a chaotic event. This was not a free-for-all. That's not how God works. Like people weren't confused. I mean, if you literally, if you put yourself in a situation where like all these people are talking, you know, I mean, I just know I'd be like, like, what's going on? You know, I mean, tornado blowing and tongues of fire and everything. No, like that's not what ultimately we have to kind of, you can't just kind of read this one event. That's not how God works. Like, there was clarity, there was precision, you know, and there was fruit borne out from that. Like, what's spoken against in 1 Corinthians 13 and 14 in regards to speaking in tongues is like, no, like God's not the author of confusion. And tongues in the sense we're not necessarily languages, but but a spiritual language, you know. And Paul says, no, God's a God of order, and he lays down, like, if you're gonna speak in tongues, it needs to be like in this, not one or not more than two at a time, and there needs to be an interpreter, you know, all those different things. That's a whole nother sermon. Yes, definitely. For here, like what I think is so profound is that there was not confusion. Everyone knew like what was going on. Like they were amazed, they were perplexed to a degree, but just because this was unfamiliar, this was supernatural, this was divine, they all knew that this was God, you know. Undeniable. And so, but the other thing that you mentioned, and I forgot to make that point in our conversation here, is to each one of them, like that the Holy Spirit rest of the thing. Like just Peter or it wasn't just the twelve apostles, right? Who had been specifically commissioned. It wasn't just Mary, the mother of Jesus, or Jesus' brothers, James and Jude, who were there. Each one of the 120, each one of the women, each one of the men. And this correlates with what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 11 and 12 about the church, to each is given, each believer, as God arranges them in the body as he chooses, to each is given a manifestation of the spirit for the common good. Right, you know, and so those gifts are to be used in conjunction with one another, each different, different gifts to further the kingdom and build the body.
SPEAKER_01A lot of people think I can't share the gospel, I can't, you know, communicate, but God gives you the words. And that was something Jesus said. In those times, the Holy Spirit He promises and foreshadows that much earlier, if you're experiencing persecution or you have the opportunity, pray. You know, you have the Holy Spirit, allow God. To speak through you. Absolutely. And I've had several times where I was talking to somebody and had things come up, and I'm like, I don't know where I came up with that, but it helped them make sense of the gospel, it helped them understand their need, and it's like, yeah, it's it's not me. I'm just faithful, like God. What do you want to share? And so maybe that's a different language, maybe that's speaking to somebody's position in life. You know, not to get too tangential, but God will give you what you need to share his works in that moment.
SPEAKER_00Trevor Burrus, Jr. My God shall supply all your needs according to his riches and glory. He will give you, me, each one of us, what we need so that we can be obedient. And really, what he doesn't need our availability or our ability, he needs our availability. And really, truly, I do believe that in the moment, like anything that God calls us to do, to be a part of, commands us to do, like there's a degree of faith in that, right? Without faith, it's impossible to please God. So there's an element to whatever degree, it may be a lot, it may just be a little, but we need to lean on him and look to him and rely on him for strength, for wisdom, for ability. And he gives it in that moment. Like whether it's the ability to, I believe that God could right now, if necessary. Now we have Google Translate now, so it's not necessarily necessary, but that if if it was his will, like I could be tran just like Philip, the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts chapter 8 was transported, you know, to speak Philip, not the Ethiopian unit, Philip was transported to the Ethiopian eunuch, you know, he could do that, transport me to India, and I could be speak, you know, Hindi, you know, fluently. He doesn't need me to do that because there's people who can speak English in India right now. And and but I just don't want to ever put God in a box. Like this is the God that we serve,
Gifts, Availability, And Gospel Boldness
SPEAKER_00He's a He's amazing, He's miraculous, and He's able. And we just should never make excuses. I can't. Like what's impossible with man is possible with God. And we absolutely do things that are above and beyond our own abilities so that he gets the glory, you know, and so don't ever say, I can't, you know. I in sharing the gospel, I always say success is not necessarily someone coming to saving faith, but us being obedient. Success in sharing the gospel is simply sharing the gospel. And God does give us the words, and God does give us the ability to communicate things that we don't think that we can gives us clarity, you know. And I I've been there and it is nothing better. It wouldn't, it wasn't in a different language, but even just in my own language, the ability to put two thoughts together and to meet a person where they're at, you know, for his glory.
SPEAKER_01And all that's gonna come from the Spirit, like I say, that prayed for 10 days. It's really being in that alignment for God to use you that availability that the Lord used me to reach somebody, maybe a family member, friend, coworker, and you're struggling. Pray for those words. God can work through you. And like you said, it's an open-handed, we never want to put God in a box, but too many people will take it too far and make it like if you're not speaking in tongues that something you're not filled less than, or those kind of things, which, like I said, there's gifts, many gifts. Everybody has a gift, you know, like we've talked about. So I think that's important too. Like some people make too much of it rather than and then some people want to go the other direction and limit what God can do through people's.
SPEAKER_00And I think some people make it about the experience, the emotion of it. And that wasn't what it was about. It was about the advancement of the gospel. It was about it wasn't about those people. Absolutely. One last thing, if we have time to speak on or touch on, is just that phrase being filled with the spirit. They were all, each one of them was filled with the Holy Spirit. And then in Ephesians 5.18, we see this command. You know, Paul tells believers, I think it's 5.18, Ephesians, do not be drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Holy Spirit. Interestingly enough, not to get too nerdy on you, but a different Greek word is used to translate the Acts 2.4 verse than the Ephesians 5.18, filled. And there's different nuances in what those means. They're both translated as filled, but every believer is essentially, when they come to saving faith, filled. They're born again, they're born of the Spirit, and as such, filled with the Spirit. Rivers of living water will flow you. This is the living, the Holy Spirit. But the command in Ephesians 5:18, the nuance there is, you know, keep in step with the Spirit, be obedient, submit to, and receive, like being in right relationship with God, following Jesus, being in the Word, praying, and thereby like filling, you know, the you know, overflowing with ability, with power. There's this correlation with the spirit and with power. If you're wayward, you're not positioning yourself
Be Filled With The Spirit Daily
SPEAKER_00to receive what God is giving you, and thereby you're filling yourself with the world at the expense of filling yourself with the spirit, you know. And so that's kind of the to to kind of, I don't know if that makes sense, but kind of to explain the nuanced differences between Acts 2.4 and Ephesians 5, 18, and that stain phrase, be filled with the Spirit. Does that make sense?
SPEAKER_01No, I think it does. And important doctrinal thing. If you have been born again, if you have trusted in Christ as your Savior, you have the Holy Spirit. Right. That's what Jesus says, the helper comes so that all of us have the third person of the Trinity. And it's a person, right? Not this spiritual, mystical thing. Exactly. Yes. So the Holy Spirit is a person. He is with us, in us, helping us. So a lot of people we lose touch with that, thinking, you know, okay, well, great, I got my faith. God's just out there somewhere, but no, he's present within us and through us. So I think that's a good thing.
SPEAKER_00But we can absolutely. And so one last thing, I know we're running out of time.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I'm just what happens when we wait till Tuesday. It's great, it's good stuff.
SPEAKER_00So pour your spirit out. You know, we we often pray that here at Lifehouse. We sing songs, we sang a song on Sunday. So we're not, in essence, praying for God to, you know, pour his spirit out because he's never poured his spirit out. No, we believe that when he poured his spirit out, the promise of God was fulfilled. And every believer has access and is indwelt by the Holy Spirit. God has poured his spirit out. But what we're praying for or seeing and calling for is a manifestation for revival, for for visitation in the sense where not that he needs to do it again, but we're just praying for more, you know, for more of God, you know, more of his presence, more of his power to be manifested, you know, and and I think that's appropriate to do. You know, I believe that, you know, I always say that I want to go deeper and farther in my relationship with God, right? The love of God surpasses knowledge. And so Paul said, and he prayed, you know, that God would help them to know what is the height, the depth, and the length and the breadth of his amazing love, so that he would take them deeper and farther. And so that's essentially what we're praying when we pray for more. Pour your spirit out more, reveal yourself, like show up in an undeniable way. You're already here, but make that known. We pray for, you know, that's that's you know, it's so I think a lot of people tend to get upset, you know, depending on what your doctrinal leanings are. And oh, you shouldn't be praying or singing for, you know, God to pour his spirit out because he already did that. No, we believe that. Thank you, Lord, for Pentecost, Acts chapter two, fulfilling your promises as you always have. But we're hungry for more. As always, if you have questions, you know, things like tongues can be controversial. We want to talk about it. So don't let anything we say trip you up. Just reach out. We'll be glad to have a conversation. We want to help you grow. So anything we can do to help you with that, reach out. But we will see you next time.
