The word “prodigal” is everywhere in our culture, but Luke 15 is sharper and more personal than most of us remember. We sit with three escalating stories Jesus tells after the Pharisees grumble that he welcomes sinners: a lost sheep, a lost coin, and two lost sons. Each parable reveals a different kind of lostness and a different angle on God’s relentless compassion.
We talk through how the sheep represents someone who knows they’re in trouble but can’t get home, and how the shepherd’s pursuit is intentional, costly, and tender. Then we shift to the lost coin, a picture of spiritual blindness where someone may not feel any need until life cracks open that illusion. Along the way we wrestle with what evangelism and Christian discipleship look like in real life: noticing the people God places in our path, refusing to shame them, and remembering the deep value God assigns to every person.
The Prodigal Son story widens the lens even more. The younger brother runs into rebellion and hits bottom, but the father runs toward repentance with full restoration. Then the older brother exposes a quieter danger: self-righteous pride that keeps score and refuses joy. The episode lands on the cliffhanger question Jesus leaves hanging for all of us: will we join the Father’s celebration, or stand outside like the elder brother?

SPEAKER_00What's up, Lifehouse Family? Welcome back to the Life Talk Podcast. We are always excited to be having a great conversation on a Monday morning or whenever you listen to us. Hopefully you're waiting for the Monday morning drop, but we know schedules are busy. We hope you find some time, whether it's in the car, on the lawn mower, wherever it is, to join us. And again, the reason we do this is to just bring you some great content, get into God's word, prayerfully uh help you think through some whether challenging passages, or as we go chapter by chapter, we get into some great topics. Last week we were in humility, something that we really need to think and understand well in terms of what it means biblically and being focused more on others rather than ourselves. But this week we're gonna move ahead to chapter 15. We'll be some familiar parables here. But before we jump in, well man, Rico's still MIA. He he's gonna exceed his PTO balance. We might have to advertise. If anybody wants to interview for a fourth host position here, we'll we'll take some application. All right, we'll give him a little more. Is it Grace? Is it in the Bible? We should have seen Grace.

SPEAKER_00Okay, okay. But you know, we'll prepare it just in case, you know, because hey, we're gonna talk about prodigals today. Rico's like the prodigal host here. But in that uh sense, you you you if you're not here, you get a hard time. That's what happens on the podcast. But Jonathan Bush is still back with us this week. Jonathan, good morning. Going well, thank you. Man, it's coming up. End of August is coming soon. And like you said last week, how's the flight school going? Everything's coming along.
SPEAKER_01And yeah, I know uh there's a lot of college students that are going into mourning right now because their classes are just around the corner. So but I'm I'm looking forward to it. I like the beginning of the semester just because you know it's another set of students and just love investing in them and and you know, helping them along their journey of education.
SPEAKER_00New crop pouring into the next generation. That's one of our core values here, right? Always investing in the next generation. So you got it. And Jeremy Alrich, did we pass quality control last week? We did okay. Yeah, I'm still you know, the jury's still out a little bit, but we'll we'll you know, like you gotta we may have to have a quality committee meeting here if if we keep slipping on this. Luke 15 And God’s Heart
SPEAKER_00thing. And so today we will be in again, chapter 15. Many have probably heard it's become just part of the this is where the Bible even shapes our culture, a prodigal. So we'll be talking through uh lostness and the prodigal son today. So what can we glean from chapter 15, Jeremy?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, Luke chapter 15. If I had to title this chapter, it would, but for me, it was it stood out as I didn't I didn't alliterate this this time.
SPEAKER_00So that's a quality issue. You know that, right? We got to get the alliteration quality up around here.
SPEAKER_02I know sometimes I'm sorry, I'll I'll do better.
SPEAKER_00I know it's you are the quality guy, too.
SPEAKER_02So we just talked about like we just talked about tradition over grace.
SPEAKER_00Speaking of lost, you know, like we lost the alliteration this week.
SPEAKER_02Oh man, I was just thinking about you know that tradition over grace thing, though. So oof.
SPEAKER_00True, true. So touche.
SPEAKER_02No, but we see in Luke chapter 15, if I if I saw this, if I could title this, it would be lost and found. We see some of the most concentrated revelations of God's heart towards towards lost about lostness in the entire Bible, I think. Here um Jesus responds to the Pharisees' disgust at his uh friendship and his reaching out to sinners by telling three parables that escalate in depth, emotion, and relational intensity. A sheep wonders foolishly, uh a coin lies lost unknowingly, and two and uh two sons we see a story of two sons, but and both are lost. One rebels and one is lost in self-righteous pride. And God is the one who's who initiates the search for all, carries the burden and restores relationships. So let's let's dive in and we'll see what what the what the word has to say. So starting in verse one, it says, Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing
The Lost Sheep And Rescue
SPEAKER_02near to him, and the Pharisees and scribes grumbled, saying, This man receives sinners and eats with them. So he told them this parable. What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost until he finds it. And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my lost my sheep that was lost. Just so I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. So Jesus is telling us in this parable, be telling this parable because the Pharisees cannot fathom a God who welcomes sinners. They see themselves as as perfect and the chosen people of God, but God is welcoming sinners, and they can't they just can't fathom that. The sheep represents a person who wonders foolishly. Now, we we were talking about this in our little and and on some of our prep for this episode, that the sheep knows that they're in distress when it's by itself. Like they're they're actually really kind of dumb animals. And I think that's one of the reasons.
SPEAKER_00It's not a compliment to be called a sheep, no.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, exactly. I think that like I'm a dumb person, so I have like, you know, like I can I can I can identify with a sheep sometimes, and and but they know that they're in distress, but they know also that they they can't get out, like they'll wander around and they'll get even more lost, they can't fix it. And the shepherd, uh the shepherd's pursuit becomes intentional uh and it's and costly and compassionate. He refuses to ride off that one, even though he's already got 99 back in the back in the fold. And the 99 who are back in the fold are safe because they're independent, but there's that one that's vulnerable, and God's heart is moving towards that vulnerable. What we can see in this in Jesus' teaching. And then finally we see heaven erupting with joy when even one sinner repents, that divine celebration over uh human restoration.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think the like you bring out the the sheep without a shepherd, like they know something's wrong, and I think we see that. There'll be people kind of know, you know, out there, you know, there there's there is a lostness, there's a need, that God-shaped hole often of many lost people. Like something's missing, and I think like you bring that out well, what Christ is showing here, but the inability of the sheep to shave itself, needing the shepherd, and even the shepherd putting the sheep on his shoulder. I think that just obviously resonates with us on this side of you know the crucifixion and resurrection, what Christ would have to do to bear our sins, to bring us back into relationship.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Just from the beginning, there, the reason Jesus has given us this parable is in response to what the Pharisees, you know, they're looking around, them and the scribes, and they're they're like, oh man, why what is why are all these sinners around? Like, doesn't Jesus know they're they're sinners? And and really, like with last chapter, we were looking at people and talking about, you know, God's desire for us if we're gonna be his disciples, is that we're we're ministering to to those in need, and that's sinners, you know. And I think perspective on this, like why they were grumbling for the Pharisees, is because they lost perspective and understanding that you're a sinner too, bro. Like you I am saved by grace through faith, it's nothing that I've done. Now, you know, we talk in James that you know there should be action that outgrows or comes from that faith. But it's not, I I should never look at those works and go, oh, well, I'm better than someone else. I should be thankful for that. And and so, in part when we're looking at these examples here of people that are lost, you know, the sinners, is just having that right perspective of and I and I think we'll get to it probably in the last example that we'll, you know, don't steal your thunder there, Jeremy. But the Pharisees themselves are really kind of you know, part of when Jesus is talking here, it's amazing because he's talking to all of them. He's gonna use these each examples, but each of them are, you know, it it's not that he's he's just gonna chastise the the Pharisees, which he he will do to help them reflect, but he really wants them to be to come into his kingdom, to have a heart that that is right before not just to appear right, but actually do right.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean what we're gonna see is a lot of people think that this a lot of the commentators I read think that can say is that this is one big parable. There's a there's a little bit of a theological debate. Is this one big parable or is this three parables? But either way, I mean I can see that like it being one parable and it building on on and Jesus you know talking through like different examples of lostness. And one thing that jumped out to me is that there's actually three stories in here, but there's four lost. There's really four people four four kinds of lostness, which I was like, oh wow, like that's something I in studying through this that I maybe hadn't seen before or hadn't thought of before. But Jesus doesn't wait for lost people to find him in this in this sheep example, right? He we because the sheep can't find him, he goes after them when they can't find their way home. And so we often we know these we we can see people around us in our communities or in our in our spheres or in our circles who might know that they're spiritually off course, but they have no idea how how to fix that. Like, and they can't fix it. God is the shepherd who goes after them, but he often uses us as the ones who to help to point them back to to him, not to shame them. We're not we're not there to shame them, but to help them see their way home. So we have that we have a we're on, you know, if we're on if we have that right mindset of humility and discipleship, we're gonna like God'll God will reveal those people to us. And so we actually have that opportunity and that that that great opportunity to come alongside and be on to to get on board with what God's doing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I think today a lot of times some of what the the devil will do or the or the deception we we believe is that, well, no one really believes in God anymore. You know, what I what I believe is is just this small,
Sharing Faith Without Shame
SPEAKER_01you know, at church, it's it's a smaller number of people every day, you know, we were a godly nation, no longer, et cetera, et cetera. You know, kind of this negative outlook, but it but just some of the stuff I've been reading and and the polls and et cetera, to some extent, you know, it's it's just numbers, but but at the same time, I think it shows is that it's really not there there is still a desire, a spiritual desire, knowing that I have a need. It's not just an outright, okay, I may not believe in Jesus per se or the Bible. I may not even know it nowadays because you know, maybe I haven't been told the Bible. But my my encouragement is is to look and realize is not not be persuad uh dissuaded from sharing the gospel because there is a hunger out there. And it sometimes it's because they just don't know. You know, a lot of people haven't heard of what the gospel is, who Jesus is, other than a curse word. And and then there's also some that maybe you know we'll get into that that do know who you know had shared what the gospel is and just need that encouragement to say, hey, what you're pursuing right now, you're lost. Like, how's that because sometimes I've had the conversations where it's just like, you know, they're sharing, and it's just like, well, how's that going for you? And then they just kind of look back at you and you go, Well, that's not going so well. Okay, well, let me share what worked has worked for me and is you know has given me life.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. We're gonna see in the next section the a picture of someone who like we saw it with the sheep, that they know that they're there's something off and they're that they can't find a way home, but now we're gonna see someone who a picture of someone who doesn't know, has no idea that like for at least for a while, and they're as they're going along, they everything's great. Like they don't know that they're lost. So we'll read verse we'll start starting in verse eight through ten.
The Lost Coin And Hidden Value
SPEAKER_02Jesus is continues saying, Or what woman having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it. And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost. Just so I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents. So we're gonna stop and reflect a little bit. The coin can represent people who are lost but are completely unaware of that condition. The woman's actions are deliberate. She's lighting a lamp, she's sweeping, she's searching carefully, and the lostness here is is actually blindness. Like we just don't know. There are people around us who just don't know that they're lost. People feel fine so until it's we can often say people feel everybody feels fine until a crisis, or you know, so until and then that crisis can reveal a need. And again, we see heaven rejoicing when when a sinner repents. God's joy is consistent across all forms of lost who come back to who who come to him. So then this parable is highlighting the spirit's work in awakening that awareness.
SPEAKER_00And I even see too, just the parable of the coins. Like there's value too. Like God values, every person has a value, and we should see that same thing as well in lost people, because it can be too easy to, you know, again, we've been through this in weeks where we can get that pharisaical type attitude and just Christian bubble and not see the lost and the value that God puts on those people too frequently. That can be our attitude. So, yeah, just as he moves into the coins, I see him bringing out like there is worth here in the lost and pursuing them as well. And we should have that same Christ-like attitude. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the value of it was about 10 days' wages for the uh denarium. No small amount. Which I mean, I don't know about you, but I I would be pretty stoked about that. I mean, I'm I'm I'm happy just when I get twenty dollars. I go, oh, I put that that that's where that went. Okay. Thank you, Lord.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, uh not only that, like with the value, I mean, the value is absolutely, but like one one thing I learned that Jewish wedding hand headbands, they used 10 silver coins. And so Jesus is saying, if you had 10 coins and you lost one, it might be he might be referring to this to this wedding tradition, right? Losing one and then walking around with nine on your headband, that would be socially humiliating. So like like it would be, of course, the what the the woman's gonna go searching for this coin, but it because it has value, because it has uh there's a need for it, like there's a value for it. It's and some people going back to the the you know the idea of lostness, there's many people in our community who feel no spiritual need until life potentially something something happens, and we have to be ready and compassionate to present the the gospel to them when the spirit opens their eyes, just reinforcing that point again. So moving on, we'll see the the longest
The Prodigal Son Read Aloud
SPEAKER_02section here. We'll we'll see two lost sons who one who is willfully lost and one who is self-righteously lost. So we're gonna read. It's a big chunk of scripture, but we're gonna read verses eleven to thirty-two because it gives us a whole picture of the story. And he said, There was a man who had two sons, and the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the share of the property that is coming to me. And he divided the property his property between them. Not many days later the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property and reckless living. And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. So when he so he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country who sent him into his fields to feed pigs, and he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, How many of my father's hired servants have more than enough food? More than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger. I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants. And he arose and he came to his father, but while he was a long way off his father saw him and felt compassion and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you I am no longer worthy to be called your son. But the father said to his servants, Bring quickly the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet, and bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let us eat and celebrate. For this my son was dead and is alive again. He was lost and is found. And they began to celebrate. Now the older son was in the field, and as he came he drew near to the house. He heard music and dancing, and he called one of his servants and asked what these things meant. And he said to him, Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and sound. But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him. But his but he answered his father, Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command. Yet you gave me a young yet you never gave me a young goat that I might celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him. And he said to him, Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It is fitting to celebrate and be glad. For this, your brother was dead and is alive. He was lost and he is found. And the story kind of ends here on a on a cliffhanger. We don't know what the the the older brother does. We were left to contemplate that, right? But Jesus is telling the story of two sons, both lost in different ways. The younger son rebels, he demands his inheritance, and wastes everything in reckless living. Then he then he comes into a crisis and he comes to himself, as Jesus says, and he returns home and and is f fully restored. But the elder brother resents this kind of grace, refuses the joy, and and and exposes his spiritual lostness as well. But the father is seeking both sons. Running to one and pleading with the other, revealing God's heart for both the rebels
The Older Brother And Unfair Grace
SPEAKER_02and those who are stuck in spiritual legalism and pride.
SPEAKER_00A whole lot to say, and and we could dig into so many avenues here, but I just, as you're reading through, like I kind of see the time that Jesus spends too. He doesn't spend a whole lot of time belaboring the youngest son's sin. He points it out, you know, he was reckless and rebellious, but then he spends a lot of time on what repentance looks like, the son coming to that recognition, repenting and the joy in repentance, and then spends an equal amount of time on the older son and dealing with that and begging him to come back. And I think it was a good way I put it, I heard it put, I think it was Tim Keller, maybe like sometimes we have to repent of our goodness. You know, we have to repent of thinking that because we have been good or religious that we deserve something and that we're better than the younger son in some way. So we typically think of repenting of your sin of all the bad things you've done, but for many people who think, you know, it's I think you mentioned Jonathan, like our culture and different whether we have a need but spiritual, you know, emptiness. I'm a pretty good person, you know, I haven't done anything that bad. And but no, you have to repent of that attitude as well, of thinking that you deserve something that you don't when you have the sin and that kind of posture towards God.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the at the start of the chapter again, when it got back to them grumbling, I think that's you know one of the things that should check us, you know, if we we notice that grumbling or that that spirit that's critical of others. I mean, there's probably appropriate places where you you need to provide feedback and be critical at times, you know. Because you know, obviously when the s the son rebelled, you know, it it wouldn't be wrong to say, yep, you rebelled and that's not right. But at the same time, the the heart of what God is getting after here is I think he's showing in contrast is how it shouldn't be that, oh, look at these sinners, but it's like, oh no, look at what God has saved. Like not not what isn't, but what should be or what has been and how that should be a a joyful thing, you know, because I think sometimes too, just in in the day-to-day of ministry, if you will, it can be difficult at times because it it's tough. And so you think, oh man, if these people just didn't uh deal with their issues, and you know, then I it'd be a little easier for me, right? And so I think sometimes when, you know, like a a Pharisee, it it's easy to say, well, I I don't want to be like a Pharisee. I think we got that, but at the same time I I kind of have to check myself because I think sometimes it's it's hard not to when people bring their their troubles and you got your own stuff you're dealing with, and it's easy just to go, well, kind of dismissive, and I I'm not gonna invest my time there because I don't have it. When God's like, well, they just came across your path, so kind of making it your deal to to deal with, right? And so I think it's don't be so quick to just dismiss that, oh, I'm I'm not the older brother. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_00Really good book I read a year or two ago. It's called Mission at Nuremberg, and it recounts the trials of the Nazi war criminals after World War II. And, you know, fascinating if you like history, but also it recounted the chaplain who, you know, because it was like Geneva Convention or whatever, you know, as as the victors, you have to minister, provide religious services to your captors. And so he drew this assignment where he had to go be part of being a chaplain to these Nazi war criminals. And you want to talk about a challenging job, but I think even for us, that can be confrontational of ten of these 17, according to this book, came to faith, you know, during these trials in his ministry and put their faith and trust in Christ. And that can be super hard for us in thinking that when we read all the atrocities that they committed, that how could God have grace on them? But that should not be our attitude, you know, like no, we are all sinners, and yes, unfortunately, is played out in greater consequences in reality for some, but we should praise God. And it was even like going to the gallows, you know, made me cry, like reading, you know, as a guy looked at the chapel and he's like, I'll see you again, you know, like I'll see you in heaven. And it's like to see that level of repentance and life change, even after all that is only the grace of God and should bring rejoicing, but a lot of times it brings revulsion to us. But it's where we have to check our hearts and remember, even in that book, again, kind of just man, so much you can I learned in it. A lot of the people who lived in Germany, you know, they didn't participate in the concentration camps, but they kind of knew about it and didn't do anything about it. And so, like, for us to say that we're any better, we might have been in the same situation as well and just kind of like turned a blind eye because we didn't want to bring any persecution on ourselves, but they were just as, you know, kind of lies of omission, lies of commission in terms of not doing those things. So anyway, fascinating book. You know, if anybody likes reading in history, it's a really good one. But my point being to build into what we're talking about is we should rejoice, you know, even if we're, you know, praise God, because we were in that position a lot as well. So it's a really good.
SPEAKER_02I mean, the elder like something that you're hitting on was I mean, something I had written down as well as the elder brother's reaction shows how grace can feel unfair if we be if we're if we're basing it on a merit-based performance, or if we're we're judging it like, you know, like, oh, I'm better than that guy. Why why is he why is you know, it's like if the person gets promoted above you and you've seen them screw up like a time and time again, and you can look at it and go, seriously, them? Like, but like it grace can feel unfair if we're ba if we have the wrong level of expectation for for why is that grace? Like why because and so you know, we need to be repentant and be guarded against our own selves being the elder brother. But one another interesting point that I that I s that jumped out to me was you know, in the first story, or the first part of the story, the sheep, the sh the sheep knows it's lost, and the shepherd goes after it. The coin it doesn't know it's lost, but it's val it has value and and it and the woman's looking for it. The the rebellious son no one goes after it. No one goes after him. Like he goes and he goes into rebel like rebellion, and there's like in the story, no one goes after him. Sometimes we have to get to the bottom of ourselves before we before we can come to that repentance, too. So if we're stuck, if there's something that we're stuck in that like we need to come sometimes, got sometimes we get to the bottom of it and then we we hit rock bottom and then we can then we go and then we can look up and say, Man, I've messed up.
SPEAKER_01Like there's an aspect of that, you know, when we ask Christ to come into our life, before we can do that, we have to acknowledge that he is king. Like there's that there's that level again, it's the humility we talked about a week ago. Part of that humility is to it is a proper understanding of my position before Christ. And and that uh reflects here just in the relationship then with others that we saw last week as well, and and being able to keep to be joyful and and not to grumble. Because the I was just talking with someone, and we'll get into this probably next week a little bit too as we start talking about money, but just sometimes people get a finite mindset. I mean in God's kingdom there there is no finite. It's an we should have an infinite mindset and not that, oh, if they have I don't. It's like, no, God like appreciate what God gave you today, rejoice in what he's doing in others, but don't you know, be careful not to put God in a box where it's like, well, if if he gets that, then I don't get this. Because I mean, some of that is is like this older brother who doesn't even call him his brother. He just goes your son. Like the disdain there to to not even acknowledge that. It's it's pretty, you know, it's pretty harsh.
The Cliffhanger Question And Closing
SPEAKER_02Well, as we've seen, Luke 15 can get gives us a really good picture of uh the God who is seeking saving and celebrating those who come to him. You know, whether we're whether we're lost and we're lost foolishly like the sheep, or unknowingly like the coin, willfully like the son, every sinner matters to to God. And the the the father runs towards those re who are who are rebels, pleads with the self-righteous. And the question for us is will we join in the father's joy? Or will we be like the elder brother who's standing outside? It's really the question.
SPEAKER_00And on the cliffhanger, will we go in? So that's the question we all have to answer. So well, Lifehouse family, thanks for joining us.
