00:03:49.861 --> 00:03:51.963 It's not what you expected, of course. 00:03:51.963 --> 00:03:52.897 How many have done this? 00:03:52.897 --> 00:03:56.968 I found an old box to put presents in, keep boxes around for when it's time to pack stuff. 00:03:56.968 --> 00:04:01.507 Person didn't really think about what it might mean or imply or communicate. 00:04:01.574 --> 00:04:05.777 Disappointment might have even been some tears shed in that moment. 00:04:05.944 --> 00:04:08.046 Disappointment. 00:04:08.046 --> 00:04:10.582 Disappointment comes in life. 00:04:10.582 --> 00:04:12.283 We're all going to face disappointment. 00:04:12.283 --> 00:04:16.488 It doesn't always come in the form of a a sweater or an article of clothing or a jacket. 00:04:16.488 --> 00:04:23.028 Sometimes it comes in the form, maybe a loss at school, a challenging relationship. 00:04:23.028 --> 00:04:31.103 Maybe a family member let you down, maybe a sports team let you down, maybe a relationship fell apart. 00:04:31.336 --> 00:04:35.440 Maybe you feel like God has let you down, disappointed you at times. 00:04:35.440 --> 00:04:39.110 One thing is for sure, though, in life you're going to face disappointment. 00:04:39.110 --> 00:04:41.880 How do we handle disappointment? 00:04:41.880 --> 00:04:46.619 I think in today's passage we're going to see a few different people in the ways they encounter disappointment. 00:04:46.619 --> 00:04:49.387 In fact, there's five ways we're going to look at today. 00:04:49.387 --> 00:04:54.158 Five different encounters with disappointment and how people reacted to them. 00:04:54.158 --> 00:04:55.894 And so turn to John, Chapter 18. 00:04:55.894 --> 00:05:02.600 If you have a church Bible that will be on page 850, if you don't have a Bible, we'd love to put a copy of the Bible in your hands. 00:05:02.600 --> 00:05:10.175 We have those out in the connection corner, slip out at any time and grab one The page numbers on the screen tie in to that specific Bible. 00:05:10.175 --> 00:05:16.415 We're going to start by reading just the first few verses here of 18 and verses 15 through 17. 00:05:16.482 --> 00:05:21.954 Get our bearings for the story today, John. 18 verses 15 through 17. 00:05:22.053 --> 00:05:24.822 Simon Peter followed Jesus. 00:05:24.822 --> 00:05:26.791 So did another disciple. 00:05:26.791 --> 00:05:32.230 Since that disciple was known to the high priests, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high Priest. 00:05:32.230 --> 00:05:37.136 But Peter stood outside at the door. 00:05:37.136 --> 00:05:45.677 So the other disciple who was known to the high priest, went out, spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, brought Peter in. 00:05:45.677 --> 00:05:45.944 All right. 00:05:45.944 --> 00:05:47.713 It's been a few weeks since we've been in John. 00:05:47.713 --> 00:05:49.380 So let me remind you of the context. 00:05:49.380 --> 00:06:03.795 We spent many months in chapters 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, going through the upper room discourse where Jesus was just meeting alone with his disciples, teaching them re-emphasizing things, washing their feet, teaching about service, likely having a Passover meal together. 00:06:03.795 --> 00:06:06.464 He does the high priestly prayer in Chapter 17. 00:06:06.464 --> 00:06:09.067 Then all of that ends and they walk out. 00:06:09.067 --> 00:06:11.970 They go to the garden and Jesus is betrayed. 00:06:11.970 --> 00:06:21.846 Judas shows up with soldiers, turns Jesus over to them, and this follows right on the heels of that Jesus was betrayed. 00:06:21.846 --> 00:06:24.415 He's taken away by soldiers. 00:06:24.415 --> 00:06:33.891 And I think what we see here in this first interaction, this first disappointment, because Peter and the disciples all in that moment were very disappointed. 00:06:33.891 --> 00:06:38.129 They had a picture in their mind of who Jesus was and what he would do. 00:06:38.129 --> 00:06:41.632 They thought he would take over, get rid of the Roman rule. 00:06:41.632 --> 00:06:52.610 More than likely, they thought he would set up his kingdom as the new David, the new king, and instead he's hauled off by a few soldiers and Judas. 00:06:52.711 --> 00:06:54.947 And he just willingly went along. 00:06:54.947 --> 00:07:03.454 He didn't stand up for himself, fight back, didn't calm the storm, use that same power against these men. 00:07:03.454 --> 00:07:06.591 There's disappointment in that moment. 00:07:06.692 --> 00:07:08.560 And so how does Peter react? 00:07:08.560 --> 00:07:16.267 And specifically in that moment, it says here, back in verse 15, Simon Peter followed Jesus and so did another disciple. 00:07:16.267 --> 00:07:16.901 They followed. 00:07:16.901 --> 00:07:22.641 But the other gospels, Matthew, Mark and Luke, they use the phrase they followed at a distance. 00:07:22.641 --> 00:07:26.278 In fact, that's the first reaction to disappointment we see here. 00:07:26.278 --> 00:07:30.148 Disappointment creates distance. 00:07:30.247 --> 00:07:34.119 I mean, if you've been disappointed in any relationship, it creates a distance. 00:07:34.119 --> 00:07:40.125 You back away from that person, whether that's a friend, a loved one, or whether that's Christ. 00:07:40.125 --> 00:07:43.461 Disappointment creates distance. 00:07:43.562 --> 00:07:50.035 Peter says, okay, I kind of want to know what's going to happen to Jesus, but I'm not all in like I was. 00:07:50.101 --> 00:07:54.773 And this this is the guy who said, I will follow you. 00:07:54.773 --> 00:08:00.678 I will die for you no matter what. 00:08:00.778 --> 00:08:02.346 But now he's disappointed. 00:08:02.346 --> 00:08:06.117 That resolve is just it's just gone. 00:08:06.218 --> 00:08:10.088 Now we notice here as well, there's another disciple with him. 00:08:10.088 --> 00:08:11.990 He's not alone in this moment. 00:08:11.990 --> 00:08:12.456 We don't know. 00:08:12.456 --> 00:08:17.528 Many of the disciples scattered, but at least these two say we're going to find out what happens with Jesus. 00:08:17.528 --> 00:08:20.899 In fact, it says so did another disciple. 00:08:20.999 --> 00:08:23.767 Now notice how it describes this disciple. 00:08:23.767 --> 00:08:25.737 That disciple was known to the high priest. 00:08:25.737 --> 00:08:27.939 He entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. 00:08:27.939 --> 00:08:30.274 That disciple was a little more on the inside. 00:08:30.274 --> 00:08:33.711 Whether he knew the high priest or someone in there. 00:08:33.711 --> 00:08:35.647 He was more connected than Peter. 00:08:35.647 --> 00:08:39.717 He had more access, was able to stay closer to Jesus. 00:08:39.717 --> 00:08:48.626 Peter stood outside the door, so the other disciple known to the high priest went out, spoke to the servant girl, kept watching the door, brought Peter in. 00:08:48.726 --> 00:08:50.461 Now, who is this disciple here? 00:08:50.461 --> 00:08:53.264 There's some debate about exactly who that is. 00:08:53.264 --> 00:08:56.533 I'm just going to say, first of all, we can't know 100% for sure. 00:08:56.533 --> 00:09:01.038 But I think the clues in the book of John point toward it being John the disciple. 00:09:01.038 --> 00:09:10.548 John often speaks of himself kind of in this mysterious way, the disciple whom Jesus loved, without naming himself, but clearly pointing to someone very close to Jesus. 00:09:10.548 --> 00:09:16.788 But when it says another disciple later in chapter 20, he's described that way as well as another disciple. 00:09:16.788 --> 00:09:20.792 And John, in the book of John, when he mentions people, he usually mentions him by name. 00:09:20.792 --> 00:09:25.964 He names people, even obscure, people like Malchus, the guy who got his ear cut off. 00:09:25.964 --> 00:09:28.966 He talks --he names Nicodemus, who goes to Jesus at night. 00:09:28.966 --> 00:09:31.568 He names Joseph of Arimathea, who comes to get the body. 00:09:31.568 --> 00:09:34.905 So he often names people, I think, as John. 00:09:34.905 --> 00:09:36.774 But I think there's something else here going on. 00:09:36.774 --> 00:09:43.280 And I hinted at this last week where you see a little bit of this rivalry between John and Peter throughout the book of John. 00:09:43.280 --> 00:09:47.785 You ever have these friends that it's a little bit of healthy rivalry with? Now the servant and officers had made a charcoal fire because it was cold and they were standing and warming themselves. 00:12:00.350 --> 00:12:07.024 Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself. 00:12:07.091 --> 00:12:15.533 What we see here first we see the servant girl who had let him in immediately recognize him, and she asks him, Are you one of his disciples? 00:12:15.533 --> 00:12:23.073 And the tone here in the grammar's kind of embedded, this tone of a little bit of hesitation. 00:12:23.073 --> 00:12:26.777 I'm a little bit just not exactly sure. 00:12:26.876 --> 00:12:31.014 Yet it also carries a little bit of the tone of a sneer. 00:12:31.014 --> 00:12:36.586 Could you really be someone who followed him? 00:12:36.687 --> 00:12:37.989 How dare you? 00:12:37.989 --> 00:12:46.062 Even just a hint of you would be that low of a person to follow him? 00:12:46.062 --> 00:12:56.506 I remember having a moment like this with a guy I was in a theology class with, and the teacher was teaching kind of an older view on a topic, maybe more of a legalistic fundamentalist view. 00:12:56.573 --> 00:12:58.775 And he taught it and he was fair with teaching it. 00:12:58.775 --> 00:12:59.677 But we leave the class. 00:12:59.677 --> 00:13:06.484 I go out with my friend, we sit down to eat our sandwiches at lunch, and I say, Can you believe that anyone would hold that position? 00:13:06.484 --> 00:13:13.356 Can you believe someone would be that backwards and legalistic and fundamentalist to hold that position? 00:13:13.423 --> 00:13:21.231 And he goes, Well, John, let me explain some reasons why someone might hold that view. 00:13:21.231 --> 00:13:30.140 And lo and behold, quickly I remembered, holy smokes, he comes from a very legalistic, fundamentalist background, and he was working through a lot of that. 00:13:30.140 --> 00:13:37.248 But what he did in that moment, he took my sneer, my condescension and he just graciously met me where I was. 00:13:37.248 --> 00:13:40.049 And he said, Maybe consider some other viewpoints. 00:13:40.049 --> 00:13:42.552 Have you thought about the other side? 00:13:42.552 --> 00:13:46.222 And he didn't really agree with that totally either. 00:13:46.322 --> 00:13:49.159 Just for a moment, he caused me to pause. 00:13:49.159 --> 00:13:56.900 Be fair, be kind, be honest with other people, not just sneer at him, put him in a box, cast him aside. 00:13:57.000 --> 00:13:58.601 You get a hint of that here with her. 00:13:58.601 --> 00:13:59.836 Are you really?
