WEBVTT 00:00:00.500 --> 00:00:01.334 Hi, I’m John Majors. 00:00:01.334 --> 00:00:03.970 I'm the senior pastor at Valley View. 00:00:03.970 --> 00:00:10.275 This past week in our church, we had what I felt was a pretty significant moment for the church. 00:00:10.275 --> 00:00:19.152 And so we dedicated the entire Sunday morning service to talking about it, to unpacking it, to relating it to the life of our church. 00:00:19.219 --> 00:00:24.757 Unfortunately, we had a glitch in our recording system, and so we lost the first few minutes. 00:00:24.757 --> 00:00:30.597 So I'm going to take just a minute here to give you the context to set up where I was and the message. 00:00:30.597 --> 00:00:38.972 What happened was a week ago Monday, one of our members, Lynn Murray, he's 79 years old, he has Alzheimer's. 00:00:39.039 --> 00:00:40.539 Lynn Murray went out for a walk. 00:00:40.539 --> 00:00:49.082 That was a normal thing for him to do, but he got lost that day and his wife, Brenda, went to look for him and she couldn't find him. 00:00:49.082 --> 00:00:52.886 She spent hours driving around and she realized, I need help. 00:00:52.886 --> 00:00:54.320 So she called the police. 00:00:54.320 --> 00:00:55.588 They came to help. 00:00:55.588 --> 00:01:01.161 But then the word began to spread through our church that Lynn was missing and that Brenda needed help. 00:01:01.161 --> 00:01:08.534 And the way our church came together and rallied to serve them and love on them was so powerful. 00:01:08.534 --> 00:01:14.706 I wanted to make sure that we took the time to realize what happened and to celebrate that. 00:01:14.706 --> 00:01:23.882 In fact, the main way I thought we would apply that to our lives today was to unpack for sources of power to lean on when you need a miracle. 00:01:23.882 --> 00:01:29.155 Because Lynn and Brenda desperately needed a miracle in that moment. 00:01:29.155 --> 00:01:32.058 But I think all of us at times can say, I need a miracle. 00:01:32.058 --> 00:01:34.993 What our four sources of power you lean on in that moment. 00:01:34.993 --> 00:01:43.903 And so as the message begins, you'll see that I'm unpacking that first source of power, the power of community. 00:01:43.903 --> 00:01:48.040 We saw this community step up in a big way to love and serve them. 00:01:48.040 --> 00:01:50.742 Thanks so much for listening and for being a part of Valley View. 00:01:50.742 --> 00:01:54.379 So now let's join in the sermon where the recording started. 00:01:54.379 --> 00:02:03.322 And this was important, especially for Lynn and Brenda, because they didn't have family here, that they don't have children. 00:02:03.322 --> 00:02:05.024 Parents have passed on. 00:02:05.024 --> 00:02:09.962 Other family members either have passed on or don't live here. 00:02:10.028 --> 00:02:19.271 And so what if what if they didn't have a church community to lean on, but they had a life group that they'd worked hard to get connected there? 00:02:19.271 --> 00:02:22.675 They were involved in helping hands in homeless ministry. 00:02:22.675 --> 00:02:24.009 Deep connections there. 00:02:24.009 --> 00:02:26.712 And so they already had a network of connections. 00:02:26.712 --> 00:02:30.182 And by the way, we talk about this all the time here. 00:02:30.449 --> 00:02:36.188 Don't wait until you unique community to start building it and it'll be too late. 00:02:36.188 --> 00:02:49.669 I mean, maybe some people will show up, maybe not get connected into people's lives now so that when difficulties come, you're connected. 00:02:49.669 --> 00:02:53.306 It's too late at that point to try to build community. 00:02:53.372 --> 00:02:57.776 And that's not the only reason to build community, by the way, to help you when times are hard. 00:02:57.776 --> 00:02:59.812 That's but that's a good reason. 00:02:59.812 --> 00:03:01.580 That's a big reason. 00:03:01.580 --> 00:03:02.314 And they've done that. 00:03:02.314 --> 00:03:09.122 They've invested and the church knew about what was happening and we could come along, come alongside them. 00:03:09.122 --> 00:03:13.126 In that moment. 00:03:13.225 --> 00:03:17.330 There's a passage that reminded me just a little bit of what was happening here with this. 00:03:17.330 --> 00:03:19.932 Look at Matthew Chapter five. 00:03:19.932 --> 00:03:28.907 Turn to Matthew, Chapter five, Matthew chapter five, verse 14 through 16, and that's on page 76 and a church Bible. 00:03:28.907 --> 00:03:31.677 We have those in the connection corner if you want one of those. 00:03:31.677 --> 00:03:37.950 If you don't have a Bible page numbers on the screen or tied to that specific Bible to make it easy to find the passages. 00:03:37.950 --> 00:03:40.385 Matthew Chapter five. 00:03:40.453 --> 00:03:48.860 This is in the section called the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus is teaching to a large crowd and here's what he says. 00:03:48.860 --> 00:03:52.799 You are the light of the world. 00:03:52.799 --> 00:04:00.772 A city set on a hill cannot be hidden, nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. 00:04:00.772 --> 00:04:03.776 Instead, they put it on a stand so that it gives light. 00:04:03.776 --> 00:04:09.915 In all the house, we are called to be a light to the world, to shine the light into darkness. 00:04:09.915 --> 00:04:15.020 That's part of our calling as believers, as followers of Christ. 00:04:15.121 --> 00:04:16.322 But there's a reason for that. 00:04:16.322 --> 00:04:17.723 There's a purpose for that. 00:04:17.723 --> 00:04:24.096 The end goal is not just so that people talk about what great community value has. 00:04:24.163 --> 00:04:26.432 That's not the end goal. 00:04:26.432 --> 00:04:27.100 Here's what it says. 00:04:27.100 --> 00:04:30.103 Look back at verse 16 in the same way. 00:04:30.302 --> 00:04:32.305 Let your light shine before others. 00:04:32.305 --> 00:04:41.380 So that purpose, reason that they may see your good works and give glory to your father who is in heaven. 00:04:41.480 --> 00:04:42.915 That's the goal. 00:04:42.915 --> 00:04:43.949 Yes, we want community. 00:04:43.949 --> 00:04:57.930 Yes, we want to help out others so that in that moment when people see, in fact, people will know our love for Christ by our love for one another. 00:04:57.963 --> 00:05:06.172 And I think we saw the power of community at play in a way that said to others around us, because it wasn't just Valley View outlook in emergency workers, neighbors. 00:05:06.172 --> 00:05:15.947 There were tons of people that came out, but I think a lot of people went, What's up with that church in a good way? We pray when we meet. 00:07:48.233 --> 00:07:52.271 But I wanted an extra focus on that time. 00:07:52.338 --> 00:07:54.574 But Tuesday morning, I thought, we can't meet to pray. 00:07:54.574 --> 00:08:00.079 Tonight we're going to be out there doing something. 00:08:00.178 --> 00:08:04.750 And it's funny, I texted Phil, the chairman of the Elders, and he immediately, yes, I was thinking the same thing. 00:08:04.750 --> 00:08:05.851 A couple of others. Champion. 00:08:05.851 --> 00:08:07.319 Yes. Thinking the same thing. 00:08:07.319 --> 00:08:08.887 Feeling the same thing. 00:08:08.887 --> 00:08:12.124 Let's go put our boots on the ground. 00:08:12.190 --> 00:08:14.427 And so we go out, walk the road. 00:08:14.427 --> 00:08:26.505 So many again, we saw dozens, maybe 100 other people out, not just us, EMS workers, all kinds of people out, neighbors searching, searching. 00:08:26.605 --> 00:08:29.908 I got to be honest, it felt pretty overwhelming. 00:08:29.908 --> 00:08:38.250 I may not I felt like, how in the world are we going to find him? 00:08:38.317 --> 00:08:42.120 Brenda kept saying he he doesn't leave the roads when he goes for a walk. 00:08:42.120 --> 00:08:43.489 There's no way he'd leave the roads. 00:08:43.489 --> 00:08:45.691 But we've looked over all the roads. 00:08:45.691 --> 00:08:47.659 How are we going to find him? 00:08:47.659 --> 00:08:51.530 It felt incredibly overwhelming. 00:08:51.630 --> 00:08:58.504 And when I sat in her living room Tuesday night, she even acknowledged this is going to be a difficult night. 00:08:58.504 --> 00:09:07.580 In the first night, the low was 34 and I woke up thinking if he stayed outside, I don't know that I'm surviving that I like. 00:09:07.580 --> 00:09:13.919 I mean, just being without coffee in the morning would have been hard enough, let alone laying outside in the cold. 00:09:13.985 --> 00:09:20.225 But going into a second night, she said, this is going to be a harder night. 00:09:20.426 --> 00:09:22.360 But I know God is in control. 00:09:22.360 --> 00:09:25.932 And Brenda said that. 00:09:25.932 --> 00:09:32.104 And so I left there going, I want that kind of faith. 00:09:32.171 --> 00:09:37.643 But I also left her thinking and she acknowledged, we need a miracle and we need to pray. 00:09:37.643 --> 00:09:41.880 And she said, pray, pray, pray. 00:09:41.947 --> 00:09:44.115 And so many were. 00:09:44.115 --> 00:09:49.322 And we continued to pray, but were called to pray. 00:09:49.322 --> 00:10:00.899 In fact, James Ford, you can put the reference up on the screen, talks about you have not because you asked not recalled to pray, were called to ask. 00:10:01.167 --> 00:10:04.503 And there's a huge dynamic to prayer. 00:10:04.570 --> 00:10:05.403 It's not a formula. 00:10:05.403 --> 00:10:07.273 I ask you give me. 00:10:07.273 --> 00:10:08.441 No, no. 00:10:08.441 --> 00:10:09.774 But we are called to pray. 00:10:09.774 --> 00:10:11.143 I want to look at a passage in Mark. 00:10:11.143 --> 00:10:13.712 Turn to Mark Chapter five. 00:10:13.712 --> 00:10:24.255 There's a couple of stories in Mark Chapter five of Jesus Healing, Delivering Working miracles, doing miraculous things. 00:10:24.356 --> 00:10:33.832 And there's this one situation in Mark chapter five, verse 21, where we have an unexpected encounter. 00:10:33.832 --> 00:10:38.537 The person who wasn't supposed to come ask him for help, ask for help. 00:10:38.537 --> 00:10:42.774 Look at Mark chapter five, verse 21. 00:10:42.841 --> 00:10:51.750 And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him and he was beside the sea. 00:10:51.750 --> 00:10:57.523 Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue. 00:10:57.623 --> 00:10:58.758 These were not his friends. 00:10:58.758 --> 00:11:02.528 These were not the guys that were looking for wisdom from Jesus. 00:11:02.528 --> 00:11:04.263 He's the one who had it all wrong. 00:11:04.263 --> 00:11:07.099 He was the threat. 00:11:07.099 --> 00:11:12.804 But crisis came and one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jerry, is by name. 00:11:12.804 --> 00:11:25.618 Seeing him fell at his feet and implored him earnestly, sing My little daughter is at the point of death. 00:11:25.618 --> 00:11:33.491 Come lay your hands on her so that she may be made well and live. 00:11:33.591 --> 00:11:35.961 I'm desperate for a miracle. 00:11:35.961 --> 00:11:37.763 I'm desperate for you to move. 00:11:37.763 --> 00:11:40.466 I don't know what else to do. 00:11:40.466 --> 00:11:41.634 Will you just come? 00:11:41.634 --> 00:11:45.971 Just touch her to show up? 00:11:46.072 --> 00:11:47.206 He asked. 00:11:47.206 --> 00:11:50.076 And look what happens. 00:11:50.076 --> 00:11:55.980 And he went with him immediately. 00:11:55.980 --> 00:11:59.284 He went with him. 00:11:59.350 --> 00:12:05.924 Now, one difficulty of scripture is Jesus didn't heal everybody that was sick and hurt and needy. 00:12:05.924 --> 00:12:10.696 But in this moment, Jerry is asked and he went. 00:12:10.796 --> 00:12:12.331 Our call is to ask. 00:12:12.331 --> 00:12:14.700 James five says It's the effective prayer of a righteous man. 00:12:14.700 --> 00:12:21.941 Can not definitely always will, but can accomplish much. 00:12:22.041 --> 00:12:25.677 The call is to pray, and I know so many here were praying. 00:12:25.677 --> 00:12:33.351 And when you need God to show up, turn to prayer, turn to community, turn to prayer. 00:12:33.351 --> 00:12:35.086 And then the third source of power. 00:12:35.086 --> 00:12:49.701 I think we saw it play in this that I think especially stood out to me, was just people listening to the prompting of the Holy Spirit, the power of the prompting of the Holy Spirit. 00:12:49.701 --> 00:12:54.440 And I thought of three specific ways in this situation. 00:12:54.539 --> 00:12:59.812 So, Lynn, out Monday night, still not back out Tuesday night, still not found. 00:12:59.812 --> 00:13:15.193 We wake up Wednesday morning and I think probably many of us were thinking we're probably not looking for someone who's still alive at this point in my flesh. 00:13:15.193 --> 00:13:18.163 That's what I was thinking. 00:13:18.163 --> 00:13:27.072 Cold nights, 79 years old, Alzheimer's not shown up. 00:13:27.139 --> 00:13:35.114 Tuesday afternoon, we were wrapping up and a couple of staff members Jim, Andrew, Keith, Keith grew up in that area, Keith said. 00:13:35.114 --> 00:13:39.751 I know some wooded areas that I think we need to go look at tomorrow. 00:13:39.751 --> 00:13:42.620 And I thought, well, what are you, a detective? He was out in Ferndale. 00:14:11.417 --> 00:14:13.052 Okay, Andrew, whatever. 00:14:13.052 --> 00:14:16.054 Go ahead, please. 00:14:16.154 --> 00:14:19.024 Listening to the prompting of the spirit, I need to be in that area. 00:14:19.024 --> 00:14:22.027 I need to be ready. 00:14:22.126 --> 00:14:30.235 The second one just so happens that last week you may remember right down front we had someone join the church. 00:14:30.235 --> 00:14:34.340 Tyler Starnes and his family joined the church last Sunday. 00:14:34.340 --> 00:14:35.341 Just so happened. 00:14:35.341 --> 00:14:38.143 They joined the church last Sunday. 00:14:38.143 --> 00:14:42.914 Tyler works in emergency response and a lot of different layers. 00:14:42.914 --> 00:14:51.657 Just so happens that when we need someone in that field, it just so happens to join the church at Sunday. 00:14:51.657 --> 00:14:54.592 And so Tyler and Andrew are texting back and forth. 00:14:54.592 --> 00:15:00.633 We're able to know how when things are happening and keep updated as things go along. 00:15:00.698 --> 00:15:13.479 Inside communication, connection and who knows, maybe the Lord led Tyler here just for that moment. 00:15:13.544 --> 00:15:25.758 In fact, I think he said to someone, I joined the church Sunday and you're all new member initiation is pretty intense, right? 00:15:53.451 --> 00:15:55.888 Yeah. 00:15:55.888 --> 00:15:57.556 And. 00:15:57.556 --> 00:16:00.558 And he's alive. 00:16:00.658 --> 00:16:04.562 I mean, the first was a miracle. 00:16:04.562 --> 00:16:08.267 The second, I just couldn't believe it. 00:16:08.267 --> 00:16:10.001 I couldn't believe it. 00:16:10.001 --> 00:16:18.243 And I've heard a lady yesterday was trying to tell me how they reacted when they heard and just couldn't even finish the sentence. 00:16:18.309 --> 00:16:21.480 I couldn't stop thinking about it all day long. 00:16:21.480 --> 00:16:23.749 They found him. 00:16:23.749 --> 00:16:24.682 And you know how they found him?
