00:03:50.832 --> 00:03:57.966 If you look in the book of Genesis and we have these verses listed in the notes handout, if you didn't get one of those, slip your hand out. 00:03:57.966 --> 00:04:00.432 Maybe we'll be able to get one to you now. 00:04:01.832 --> 00:04:05.165 But the way work began is really interesting. 00:04:05.165 --> 00:04:09.233 If you go back to the book of Genesis, in fact, there's a Bible teacher, Robert Lewis. 00:04:09.233 --> 00:04:10.532 He was a pastor. 00:04:10.532 --> 00:04:12.866 He did a lot of writing for men. 00:04:12.866 --> 00:04:19.500 And he said that when God put Adam in the garden, he gave him three things to do. 00:04:19.500 --> 00:04:20.300 He gave them. 00:04:20.300 --> 00:04:26.165 He gave him a will to obey, a woman to love, and a work to do. 00:04:27.132 --> 00:04:34.100 He put the man in the garden, gave him a will to obey, follow God's law, a woman to love someone, to share a life with, and then a work to do. 00:04:34.100 --> 00:04:36.632 In fact, they were given the work to do together. 00:04:36.632 --> 00:04:37.865 If you look here in your notes 00:04:37.865 --> 00:04:51.033 28, part of the command to them was to be fruitful, which requires them to work together toward that end, fill the earth, subdue it, and have dominion rule over the earth. 00:04:51.033 --> 00:04:52.432 Care for the earth. 00:04:52.432 --> 00:04:56.733 In chapter two, God took man, put him in the garden to work it and keep it. 00:04:57.800 --> 00:05:09.966 You know, part of his creative design is that people on this earth would have a role in caring for the earth and taking the shape of what is produced on the earth. 00:05:09.966 --> 00:05:11.766 And this was before the fall. 00:05:11.766 --> 00:05:14.966 This was all good work given at the beginning. 00:05:14.966 --> 00:05:17.966 All of it was a very good thing. 00:05:18.033 --> 00:05:19.833 Look at chapter two, verse 20. 00:05:19.833 --> 00:05:25.000 The man part of his work was to give names to all the livestock and the birds, and every beast of the field. 00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:27.632 So there was a variety of work given in the garden. 00:05:27.632 --> 00:05:30.399 Work was given good. 00:05:30.399 --> 00:05:31.399 But then here's what happened. 00:05:31.399 --> 00:05:32.365 The fall came. 00:05:32.365 --> 00:05:44.565 Adam and Eve rejected God's rule in their life and as a result, if you look in chapter three verses and we could go through that whole section, but just some of the key phrases that relate to what happened with work. 00:05:44.565 --> 00:05:45.632 Cursed is the ground. 00:05:45.632 --> 00:05:52.300 The ground became cursed at this point in pain, thorns and thistles, by the sweat of your brow. 00:05:52.300 --> 00:05:54.932 will your work be associated. 00:05:54.932 --> 00:05:57.432 Your work now will have added challenges. 00:05:57.432 --> 00:06:05.365 It won't be as easy as it was to get the results that you want, and so work was given as a good thing. 00:06:05.365 --> 00:06:07.233 Something for us to take part in. 00:06:07.233 --> 00:06:10.165 Something that we could help be a part of, contributing to the world. 00:06:10.165 --> 00:06:13.199 And yet now, because of sin, there are challenges to our work. 00:06:13.199 --> 00:06:15.966 That doesn't mean it's bad. 00:06:15.966 --> 00:06:19.165 And anybody who's worked any job has experience this. 00:06:19.165 --> 00:06:27.266 Even as hard as you're trying to do something good, challenges come up that seem to want to keep you from accomplishing anything good, and you've got to work through those. 00:06:27.266 --> 00:06:31.300 You've got to press into that, you've got to move forward. 00:06:31.300 --> 00:06:42.399 There's a couple of interesting things I think that happen as a result of this, because the tendency would be to think that because now that there are challenges with work, work must all be bad. 00:06:42.399 --> 00:06:46.899 But there I think there are two, I want to say positives that come out of that. 00:06:46.899 --> 00:06:49.233 Maybe that's not the best word. 00:06:49.233 --> 00:06:54.365 Two results that I think strengthen us by the fact that work has challenges. 00:06:54.365 --> 00:06:55.833 Work is harder. 00:06:55.833 --> 00:06:58.833 One is appreciation. 00:07:00.966 --> 00:07:07.165 I tend to appreciate things that I have worked for versus things that I haven't. 00:07:07.233 --> 00:07:10.565 Every parent can attest to this. 00:07:10.565 --> 00:07:16.966 In fact, the kids who are least appreciative are the ones who have the most given to them. 00:07:16.966 --> 00:07:18.533 It isn't that crazy, by the way. 00:07:18.533 --> 00:07:19.966 Shouldn't it be the other way? 00:07:19.966 --> 00:07:26.733 The more I'm given, the more grateful I would be, but it's almost always the opposite because you don't. But he said, but listen, what about all the families that depend on me? 00:11:38.799 --> 00:11:41.732 I mean, if I sell it, I don't know what's going to happen with them. 00:11:41.732 --> 00:11:44.033 These are people I love and care for. 00:11:44.033 --> 00:11:50.033 I've spent my life investing in this company with them, and if I sell it off, who knows what will happen. 00:11:50.033 --> 00:12:01.799 I don't know because of his care, because of his diligence, he created wealth not just for himself and he created a lot of wealth for himself. 00:12:01.799 --> 00:12:08.100 He created wealth for hundreds of families. 00:12:08.265 --> 00:12:10.633 There's so much power in that. 00:12:10.633 --> 00:12:13.633 The diligent creates wealth. 00:12:14.799 --> 00:12:20.666 In fact, one thing that's interesting, I think it all started for him around the idea of craftsmanship. 00:12:20.666 --> 00:12:28.066 29, do you see a man skillful in his work? 00:12:29.232 --> 00:12:31.966 He will stand before kings. 00:12:31.966 --> 00:12:34.832 He will not stand before obscure men. 00:12:34.832 --> 00:12:45.932 If you want to build a business, if you want to be one who is diligent in their work and creates wealth, even if it's just for you and your family, and it doesn't extend out to hundreds of families. 00:12:45.932 --> 00:12:47.232 Like that's not for everyone. 00:12:47.232 --> 00:13:00.966 Not everyone has that ability, but it starts with seeing whatever work you have as your craft, as your stewardship, as treating it well, as doing the best you can with what you have. you're given more responsibility, you're going to know how to handle the small thing, so you'll know how to handle the big thing 00:13:16.966 --> 00:13:26.500 10 that says, whoever is faithful with who causes poverty. 00:13:56.332 --> 00:14:06.700 Now the interesting thing about the lazy, slack, slothful person causing poverty is, of course, it causes poverty for themselves, but also for others. 00:14:06.700 --> 00:14:26.932 If I'm not effective in my job, if I'm not working hard in my job, if I'm wasting the money of my employer, then of course I'm causing poverty for them, then not only that, if I'm not doing my work now, I'm forcing someone else to pick up the slack, which of course reduces their productivity as well. 00:14:27.000 --> 00:14:28.932 The slack hand it's not. 00:14:28.932 --> 00:14:35.799 A lot of times we feel like the decisions we make only affect us, but oftentimes they affect many others around us. 00:14:35.799 --> 00:14:45.133 And I'm sure we could go around the room and get stories of people who have had to pick up the slack of other people in places you've worked, and that's not fun. 00:14:45.133 --> 00:14:46.200 It affects everyone. 00:14:46.200 00:14:56.232 --> 00:15:04.066 You know, it's not just about how it affects me, it also affects others around me. 00:15:04.066 --> 00:15:12.432 Part of the problem is I end up creating a situation now where others have to pick up the slack and possibly have to take care of things. 00:15:12.432 --> 00:15:13.832 I should have taken care of myself. 00:15:13.832 --> 00:15:15.832 Look at chapter 20, verse four listed here. 00:15:15.832 --> 00:15:18.832 The sluggard does not plow in the autumn. 00:15:19.365 --> 00:15:29.966 He will seek at harvest and have nothing, because I did not plow, because I did not tend, because I did not create in the season where I should have. 00:15:29.966 --> 00:15:31.566 And now when I need it, it's not there. 00:15:31.566 --> 00:15:34.566 And so now I'm depending 00:15:56.966 One of the problems is they become an excuse machine. 00:15:59.033 --> 00:16:04.200 You can come to them needing them to work, give them opportunities to work, present ideas about work. a lion. 00:16:36.533 --> 00:16:42.533 You see, these are on the absurd level, and maybe there might be. 00:16:42.533 --> 00:16:47.466 I guess there's a chance there could be even a mountain lion out dangerous.
