and then topics, and we're going to wrap it up by looking at probably the best known chapter in Proverbs, especially for the women. 00:00:26.100 --> 00:00:34.399 If you've been in any women's study at any time, you've looked at the Proverbs 31 woman, the excellent wife, it's a familiar section for many. 00:00:34.399 --> 00:00:39.066 It holds up a high standard for the Excellent Wife. 00:00:39.066 --> 00:00:44.500 In fact, in our home, I often refer to Julie as a Proverbs 32 woman. 00:00:44.500 --> 00:00:46.165 There is no chapter 32. 00:00:46.165 --> 00:00:49.466 But what I mean by that is she excels the Proverbs 31 woman. 00:00:49.466 --> 00:00:52.732 She goes beyond the Proverbs 31 woman. 00:00:53.232 --> 00:00:56.265 It's just a way for us to well, for me to say, I love you. 00:00:56.265 Proverbs 31. 00:01:01.932 --> 00:01:07.165 But here's the thing about Proverbs 31 it's not just only the excellent wife. 00:01:07.165 --> 00:01:16.132 In fact, there's a front part to chapter 31 that I think is important to address today because I think the way it wraps up the whole book of Proverbs. 00:01:16.132 --> 00:01:19.233 In fact, if you have an outline, you should have received one coming key thing to understand about the Book of Proverbs, and especially chapter 31, is how it points backward and forward. 00:01:34.066 --> 00:01:47.599 That's what that blank on the page there at the top of the outline, Proverbs 31 points both backward and forward, backward, meaning it points backwards across the entire book of Proverbs. 00:01:47.599 --> 00:01:54.165 And you're going to see, as we look at chapter 31, a bunch of different themes that came up all throughout the book. 00:01:54.165 --> 00:02:02.566 This is almost a poetical summarization of the Book of Proverbs, almost personifying a lot of the highlights of the book all together. 00:02:02.566 --> 00:02:12.099 So it's pointing backwards across the book, but it's also pointing forwards to a greater reality of a truer wisdom that none of us can attain to merely by reading the Book of Proverbs. 00:02:12.099 --> 00:02:13.699 And we'll get to that. 00:02:13.699 --> 00:02:19.966 But it's important to understand it's not just only about a king, which is the front part of the chapter. 00:02:19.966 --> 00:02:26.699 It's not only just about an excellent wife, but it's about a greater picture of wisdom to come. 00:02:27.099 --> 00:02:35.566 Now, I think this is why I hope to handle Proverbs 31 a little differently today is because I think it is seen in two big sections. 00:02:38.165 --> 00:02:44.199 A section addressed to a king in the first nine verses and a section addressed to the excellent wife at the end. 00:02:44.199 --> 00:02:48.032 And I think it's important to see both of those together in context. 00:02:48.765 --> 00:02:51.765 You know, much of the book of Proverbs stands alone. 00:02:51.765 --> 00:02:57.633 You even think of a proverb as a short, pithy statement, a sentence or two that stands alone. 00:02:57.633 --> 00:03:01.765 It doesn't have to have the verse before it or the verse after it to explain it. 00:03:01.765 --> 00:03:18.099 Most of the book of Proverbs is that way, but here at the end we have these two long sections, nine verses, 22 verses that fit together, that are a longer section that stand apart almost from the rest of the book of Proverbs. 00:03:18.099 --> 00:03:19.500 That's why we're calling this message. 00:03:19.500 --> 00:03:22.900 And you see here at the top Proverbs 31, A king and his bride. 00:03:24.233 --> 00:03:27.300 Because this chapter addresses both together. 00:03:27.300 --> 00:03:31.099 And I think it's helpful to see these in context that helps us point it forward. 00:03:31.099 --> 00:03:33.966 So let's first start by talking about the King. 00:03:33.966 --> 00:03:36.966 Look at Proverbs 31 verse one. 00:03:36.966 --> 00:03:42.233 The words of King Lemuel, an oracle that his mother taught him. 00:03:43.400 --> 00:03:45.765 So we don't know who King Lemuel was. 00:03:45.765 --> 00:03:47.099 There's speculation about him. 00:03:47.099 --> 00:03:49.066 I don't think he shows up anywhere else in the Bible. 00:03:49.066 --> 00:03:51.665 We're not exactly sure who he is. 00:03:51.665 --> 00:04:02.432 But what is interesting here is that these are words that are captured, that he remembered that his mother taught him, which also stands apart from the rest of the book of Proverbs. 00:04:02.432 --> 00:04:07.966 The first nine chapters in particular were often very much so a father to his son. 00:04:07.966 --> 00:04:09.165 My son, my son, my son. 00:04:09.165 --> 00:04:11.000 We saw it over and over again. 00:04:11.000 --> 00:04:15.000 Then we do also see, though, father and mother instructing the son together. 00:04:15.000 --> 00:04:19.733 And now here at the end of the book, we see words just from the mother. 00:04:21.033 --> 00:04:25.865 Now what this hints at is somewhat of the life span of a king. 00:04:25.865 --> 00:04:29.865 He starts out as a young boy in the home, being instructed by both father and mother. 00:04:29.865 --> 00:04:35.333 But oftentimes the prince becomes the king because the father has passed on. 00:04:35.333 --> 00:04:49.132 And now the son who was under his mother's rule has now become her king, her ruler, and her words later in life are going to stand out differently than they did earlier on. 00:04:49.132 --> 00:04:53.533 You know what I'm talking about when mom's instructing you as a young kid, you're not always listening. 00:04:53.533 --> 00:04:57.533 But later on you might remember back and go, Man, she had something good to say. 00:04:57.533 --> 00:05:00.533 These are the things that stood out to me. 00:05:00.533 --> 00:05:07.665 I also think this highlights maybe some of the nature of the relationship that might be slightly different between a mother and her son. 00:05:08.766 --> 00:05:11.500 You know, a lot of times a father might be harsher, more direct. 00:05:11.500 --> 00:05:13.000 Of course, mothers can be, too. 00:05:13.000 --> 00:05:17.399 I'm speaking in generalities, but oftentimes they may even instruct the son together. 00:05:17.399 --> 00:05:24.966 And then later, though, she might be able, in a tender way, to pull him aside and appeal to him in a more tender fashion. 00:05:24.966 --> 00:05:29.266 In fact, look at some of the words that are used here, she says in chapter two. 00:05:29.266 --> 00:05:31.466 What are you doing, my son? 00:05:31.466 --> 00:05:32.533 What are you doing? 00:05:32.533 --> 00:05:34.632 Son of my womb? 00:05:34.632 --> 00:05:35.800 We say that differently. 00:05:35.800 --> 00:05:39.100 Look, I carried you around for nine months. 00:05:39.100 --> 00:05:40.365 All that I've done for you. 00:05:40.365 --> 00:05:42.065 Would you listen to what I have to say? 00:05:42.065 --> 00:05:45.000 You have no idea how much I've sacrificed for you. 00:05:45.000 --> 00:05:47.033 Son of my womb! 00:05:55.199 --> 00:05:57.833 I want them to pay attention to what I'm about to say. 00:05:57.833 --> 00:05:59.000 I'm trying to correct him. 00:05:59.000 --> 00:06:01.665 It's obvious I'm not approving of what they're doing. 00:06:01.665 --> 00:06:05.466 In fact, many translate this phrase just as listen. 00:06:05.466 --> 00:06:07.100 Listen to what I'm about to tell you. 00:06:07.100 --> 00:06:07.966 And she repeats it. 00:06:07.966 --> 00:06:09.199 Listen, listen, listen. 00:06:09.199 --> 00:06:12.199 I'm really trying to get your attention. 00:06:13.399 --> 00:06:17.865 And she's going to give him instruction in three key areas. 00:06:17.865 --> 00:06:22.966 In fact, here at the top of your notes, three ways a king is called to serve his people. 00:06:25.233 --> 00:06:30.132 What she wants to do is to make sure he understands that his role is different. 00:06:30.132 --> 00:06:32.233 A king is not called to serve himself. 00:06:32.233 --> 00:06:34.033 He's called to serve others. 00:06:34.033 --> 00:06:35.333 Don't forget that. 00:06:35.333 --> 00:06:37.065 Don't forget your calling. 00:06:37.065 --> 00:06:42.600 Don't forget who you are in the midst of everything else that comes with being a king. 00:06:42.600 --> 00:06:46.300 Don't forget she's appealing to his heart. 00:06:46.300 --> 00:06:49.966 She's appealing to him from her role as a mother. 00:06:49.966 --> 00:06:54.565 And those words stuck with him and he captured them later. 00:06:54.665 --> 00:06:56.432 Now let's see what these three things are. 00:06:56.432 --> 00:06:58.766 Three ways a king is called to serve his people. 00:06:58.766 --> 00:07:04.199 First, a king is called to serve through self-control. 00:07:04.199 --> 00:07:04.966 Self-control. 00:07:04.966 --> 00:07:08.966 Look at verse three do not give strength. 00:07:08.966 --> 00:07:14.399 Do not give your strength to women or your ways to those who destroy kings. 00:07:14.865 --> 00:07:19.365 The implication being giving your strength to women who do destroy kings. 00:07:19.365 --> 00:07:21.500 And of course, this is a key theme. 00:07:21.500 --> 00:07:27.100 The emphasis here is not just general self-control, but specifically sexual self-control. 00:07:27.100 --> 00:07:29.932 That was a key theme all throughout the first nine chapters. 00:07:29.932 --> 00:07:37.300 It shows up over and over again in the book of Proverbs, and it's being brought together here, specifically emphasizing that to the King. 00:07:39.100 --> 00:07:44.865 Understand that your role is not meant to be just merely for self gratification. 00:07:44.865 --> 00:07:52.065 It's meant to be about serving others, which means you practice self-control, especially in the area of sexuality. 00:07:53.132 --> 00:07:57.233 Now, by the way, this command isn't just for kings. 00:07:57.665 --> 00:07:58.966 This applies to all of us. 00:07:58.966 --> 00:08:05.199 We know that the book of Proverbs is directed at all of us, and especially the way this last part of the book is structured. 00:08:05.199 --> 00:08:09.199 It's not just only for a king and only for a random, excellent wife. 00:08:09.199 --> 00:08:13.365 It's meant to summarize all the teaching that's showing up. 00:08:13.365 --> 00:08:17.966 And so we look at this and we think, how does this apply to us as well? 00:08:18.365 --> 00:08:23.399 Because reality is we all are going to struggle in the area of sexual self-control. 00:08:23.533 --> 00:08:30.300 But the call is not to just gratify self, but to serve others. 00:08:30.300 --> 00:08:34.666 This would have been a temptation, though, especially prominent for kings. 00:08:34.666 --> 00:08:39.332 This happened, in fact, when Israel said to Samuel, we need a king. 00:08:39.332 --> 00:08:40.966 All the other people around us have a king. 00:08:40.966 --> 00:08:41.932 Look how great they are. 00:08:41.932 --> 00:08:44.166 We want to be great like them. 00:08:44.166 --> 00:08:47.466 This upset Samuel, God said, look, they're not rejecting you. 00:08:47.466 --> 00:08:49.700 They're rejecting me. 00:08:49.700 --> 00:08:51.166 And Samuel gave them this warning. 00:08:51.166 --> 00:08:52.899 13. 00:08:52.899 --> 00:08:55.232 Just so you know, here's what a king is going to do. 00:08:55.232 --> 00:08:57.566 Be aware you're asking for a king. 00:08:57.566 --> 00:08:58.633 Here's what you're going to get. 00:08:58.633 --> 00:09:03.200 He will take your daughters to be cooks and bakers and perfumers. 00:09:03.200 --> 00:09:04.133 The text goes on. 00:09:04.133 --> 00:09:08.332 And of course, I think the subtlety here is that's not the only reason he's taking them. 00:09:10.066 --> 00:09:20.666 In fact, we saw Solomon take many, many, many wives, even though what's interesting, even though the command of Scripture, if you look at Deuteronomy 00:09:20.666 --> 00:09:26.700 17 here, prior to that, you know, a king should not acquire many wives for himself. 00:09:26.700 --> 00:09:27.533 And here's why. 00:09:27.533 --> 00:09:30.365 It's not just about sexual self-control. 00:09:30.365 --> 00:09:33.100 It's not just about what I do with my own body. 00:09:33.100 --> 00:09:40.265 And what's underneath that, what's root behind that, what's core to that 00:09:41.365 --> 00:09:48.299 17, he shall not acquire many wives for himself, lest his heart turn away. 00:09:49.700 --> 00:09:53.399 The core issue here is not just what I do with my body. 00:09:53.399 --> 00:09:56.399 The core issue is a spiritual issue. 00:09:57.466 --> 00:10:04.832 What does this do with your heart when you reject God's law and direction around sexuality? 00:10:06.966 --> 00:10:08.466 His heart will turn away. 00:10:08.466 --> 00:10:11.932 If you continue down that path, your heart will turn away from God. 00:10:11.932 --> 00:10:13.133 You've got no other choice. 00:10:13.133 --> 00:10:19.432 You have to block him out of your life to continue to ignore his law and to just satisfy self. 00:10:19.432 --> 00:10:32.265 And we saw that, of course, with Solomon, of course, the guy who wrote much of the book of Proverbs that we've been discussing, often called one of the wisest people to ever live. And what happened? 00:10:32.265 --> 00:10:44.600 He ends up turning away from God because his heart is drawn away by the many foreign wives that came into his life and over time eroded his faith. 00:10:45.332 --> 00:10:55.765 The core issue here is spiritual leadership, and the King is called to lead his people spiritually, not to just give himself over to whatever whims he has. 00:10:55.765 --> 00:11:10.765 And each of us, you know, we're called not to just give ourselves over to whatever we feel we're called to lead spiritually, to lead whoever God has put in your life to lead, whether that's someone you're overseeing in an area of ministry or at work or in your family. 00:11:10.765 --> 00:11:18.600 But that's part of why we practice self-control, so that we might point others to Christ. 00:11:18.765 --> 00:11:21.666 So that's the first thing she says to him practice sexual self-control. 00:11:21.666 --> 00:11:24.332 Second, lead with a clear mind. 00:11:24.332 --> 00:11:27.332 Look at verse four through seven. 00:11:27.700 --> 00:11:42.700 It is not for kings O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, or for rulers to take strong drink, lest they drink and forget what has been decreed, and pervert the rights of all the afflicted. 00:11:42.700 --> 00:11:47.033 Give strong drink to the one who is perishing, and wine to those in bitter distress. 00:11:47.033 --> 00:11:53.100 Let them drink and forget their poverty, and remember their misery no more. 00:11:53.100 --> 00:11:56.299 Serve through self-controlled lead with a clear mind. 00:11:56.299 --> 00:12:04.932 Now when we talked about we had a whole message on self-control in Proverbs, and we made clear that it's not a sin. 00:12:04.932 --> 00:12:09.765 Biblically, the Bible never says anywhere that it's a sin to drink alcohol. 00:12:10.365 --> 00:12:12.466 It is a sin to be drunk. 00:12:12.466 --> 00:12:16.533 And here the emphasis especially is on the role of the leader. 00:12:17.566 --> 00:12:19.799 The leader is called to a higher standard. 00:12:19.799 --> 00:12:24.299 The leader is called to make sure that his mind is sharp, his mind is clear. 00:12:24.299 --> 00:12:29.200 His mind has not been clouded by things like alcohol, for instance. 00:12:30.232 --> 00:12:45.666 Again though, it's not just for him to make sure he's using self-control just for his own means in life, but the point is, so that he can serve others well, he's called to have a clear mind, a clear heart, so that he might serve others well. 00:12:45.666 --> 00:12:54.000 In fact, one of my favorite verses along these lines, because it's not just about what we consume, what liquid beverage we consume, but about everything we consume. 00:12:54.000 --> 00:12:58.566 It's either making your mind stronger or clouding your mind.
