00:05:32.266 --> 00:05:36.500 We have the appearance of being a good person, pure on the outside. 00:05:36.500 --> 00:05:38.766 But how do we pursue purity of the heart? 00:05:38.766 --> 00:05:40.033 Here's the first step. 00:05:40.033 --> 00:05:46.500 Number one make sure that what you heard is what is true. 00:05:46.500 --> 00:05:49.065 Make sure that what you heard is what is true. 00:05:49.065 --> 00:06:06.665 So Jesus says to them, you've heard that it was said, of course, what he's commenting on by saying that is that most people at that time receive their biblical teaching through others, by others teaching them the language that the Bible was written in the Old Testament scriptures was Hebrew, and that wasn't most people's first language. 00:06:06.665 --> 00:06:13.300 Their first language would have been Aramaic, which the Babylonian Assyrian Empire had established as the main language throughout that whole empire. 00:06:13.300 --> 00:06:16.266 That's what most people in Israel at the time spoke. 00:06:16.266 --> 00:06:20.199 Second language might have been Greek, because that was kind of the main trade language. 00:06:20.199 --> 00:06:23.233 Hebrew would have been important to them as well, but most people didn't read it, speak it. 00:06:23.233 --> 00:06:29.865 So you had to depend on the local rabbi to read it to you, to tell you what it meant, so that you can understand. 00:06:29.865 --> 00:06:31.500 You had heard that it was said. 00:06:33.300 --> 00:06:36.632 The challenge, though, that Jesus is addressing here with the Pharisees. 00:06:36.632 --> 00:06:38.300 And we saw it in Matthew chapter 23. 00:06:38.300 --> 00:06:41.665 Woe to you hypocrites, you blind guides. 00:06:42.899 --> 00:06:51.632 The problem was that the teachers, the ones who were supposed to be the most spiritual, were the ones that were now taking the law and making it mean what they wanted to serve their own purposes. 00:06:51.632 --> 00:06:53.233 They weren't stewarding it well. 00:06:53.233 --> 00:06:57.500 So you've heard that it was said, do not commit adultery. 00:06:57.899 --> 00:07:03.199 But I'm going to tell you that there's more to it than just keeping that surface level law. 00:07:04.600 --> 00:07:11.865 In fact, what Jesus is pressing at to is that everyone and this has been a challenge in the history of the church in general. 00:07:11.865 --> 00:07:14.266 Everyone needs to be in God's Word on your own. 00:07:14.266 --> 00:07:16.632 You can't only depend on what others say. 00:07:18.065 --> 00:07:27.233 Martin Luther addressed this when he started the Protestant Reformation in the 1500s, opposing the Catholic Church at the time, that was just only about-- they were the ones who were in control. 00:07:27.233 --> 00:07:28.266 They knew the Bible. 00:07:28.266 --> 00:07:29.100 No one else did. 00:07:29.100 --> 00:07:30.600 In fact, they took the Hebrew. Greek. 00:07:30.600 --> 00:07:34.833 That's what the Bible was originally written in Hebrew, the Old Testament, Greek, the New Testament. 00:07:34.833 --> 00:07:39.665 They had it all translated into Latin, which no one knew at the time. 00:07:39.665 --> 00:07:40.432 No one spoke. 00:07:40.432 --> 00:07:41.766 All the services were in Latin. 00:07:41.766 --> 00:07:43.199 No one understood it. attractive, but my gaze became fixated on them to the point now where I'm letting my thoughts go places they shouldn't. 00:13:03.299 --> 00:13:07.966 Also notice, he makes it clear, looks at a woman It sounds like our word scandalized. 00:13:17.066 --> 00:13:20.066 The Greek word sounds just like that. 00:13:20.265 --> 00:13:20.966 And it. 00:13:20.966 --> 00:13:23.566 Matthew uses that word a phrase, this scandalize, this intent, lustful intent. 00:13:55.466 --> 00:14:06.000 He's speaking to a deeper issue that I'm going to get to when we get into the third point, this phrase can also be
