think I'm about as doomed as the planet in all these
Tannermovies.
Andithis one is the only one I really have a hard time seeing, like what soups could have
SupsThey create an intricate network of satellites to control the global climate and keep everyone safe.
TannerOh wow. That can't go wrong.
Andihow many hundreds of thousands of people in Southeast Asia died? So let's kill Tom hello and welcome to this episode of the I Should Have Known podcast, the trivia podcast that can't be trusted. Each week, our Quizmaster presents you with four big facts on a topic, but one of those facts is a lie. We are celebrating the earth this week by talking about its destruction. So our quizmaster is
SupsHello,
Andiand soups is doing disaster movies part two. So for last Earth Month, we also did disaster movies if you really are interested and wanna check it out. so he's going to be presenting us with the plots of four real disaster movies, but one of his plots is wrong. So join me, Andy, and our other host Tanner in trying to spot the lie among his plots. But the movie is real.
SupsThe movies real. So if you've seen the movie, don't tell me.
AndiI think it's safe to assume that I have not seen the movie as we've established. Long time asja have known, listeners would know that do you ever go to a movie Trivia night? Don't bring Andy. She will not be helpful. think I'm about as doomed as the planet in all these
Tannermovies.
SupsOkay, before we get going, let's get started with the low hanging fruit of the
Andiweek. Mm-hmm.
SupsWhich year did the movie 2012 release?
TannerOh
AndiThis is either like annoyingly low hanging or it's it's a trick. So I, think, I have to guess 2012.
TannerYeah. And I remember this from my episode, but I don't remember the year. It's gotta be 2012.
SupsIt's not, no, actually the movie came out in 2009.
TannerOh
Andiwow. Okay. So that kind of also makes sense if they're like, the world's gonna end in a few years. Guy.
SupsYeah. This movie had everything right? Earthquake, tsunamis, volcanoes. Yeah.
Tanneryou get every disaster in one movie. Yeah.
AndiOkay,
SupsMovie number one, the Impossible. the plot of the movie in December, 2004, there's a close knit family, Maria Henry and their three sons. begin their winter vacation in Kak, Thailand, it's the day after Christmas and you know, everyone's chilling. but suddenly terrifying row rises from the depths of the sea, followed by a wall of black water that destroys everything in its path. this movie is based on the tsunami.
AndiYeah, I was gonna say too, real
TannerBoxing Day Tsunami. Yeah. After Christmas. movie, 2004,
Andiwe, we talked about recently in a recent
Supsis correct. this movie is actually based on a real story. well, she's now a Spanish motivational speaker, Maria Balon. And this is something that happened to her and how like strangers came to like, help them. They all survived. this role character was played by Naomi Watts. The husband was Evan McGregor and the three sons, one of them was the debut film of Tom Holland.
TannerOh, spider-Man.
AndiOh yeah. We talked about him. Okay. Yes,
SupsYes.
TannerSounds like a really good disaster movie. It's got the realistic plot, right. It's they survive.
AndiYeah. So I guess if we're trying to Question mother, this is what happens in that story. Yeah. we definitely know the tsunami happened. Yeah. so that part's real. So that can't be the lie. And those are the years and the dates of that. Mm-hmm. I think maybe all her sons died or
Tannersomething. Yeah, it was so destructive, it's kind of surprising that the whole family
Andiyeah. I think if this is a lie, which I still have to hear the other three, but I'm like, the part of this story this lies is, oh, I bet some sons didn't make it. oh, the husband
Tannerdidn't make Oh yeah, yeah.
AndiHenry's out. I don't know. that's what I'm thinking. I did not say this movie. Okay. I know nothing about it other than the historical event. That. Apparently inspired it, so, okay. I can see where maybe the lie is, but I don't actually know.
TannerYeah. And the name doesn't really give anything. Right. The impossible. The impossible what? Like the impossibly large wave that's coming at us or the impossible that they survived. Like pretty vague name.
AndiTrue.
Tannerthink I kind of believe it so far. But we'll see.
SupsSo then let's move on to the second movie. Deep impact.
TannerOh, classic.
SupsSo because of international space agencies miscalculation, Mars is getting dangerously close to earth, and this means the end of all human.
Andigovernment, Sure.
Supsyeah. Yeah. What would happen. Yeah. The US government keep this incoming crisis under wraps because the president, he's kind of building a secret cave to put together like select Americans to survive But, a, crazy journalist discovers the And now the US President is forced to share this plan with the rest of the world, then suspended. Air Force Pilot is trained as an astronaut named Fish Tanner, and he recruits a crew who go to space and blast the two moons of Mars, hoping to change the trajectory of Mars coming towards Earth. And if they fail, of course, basically the Earth is destroyed
Andiexcept the bunker, apparently. I don't know how the President thinks the bunker is gonna really do
Tannermuch a Mars. safe
AndiIf Mars comes and wrecks the whole planet, I, I'm pretty sure even in the bunker you're gonna have problems. So,
Supsso the film released in 1998, and Stars Morgan Freeman, Robert Du. Leon It's the same summer when the other film with the very similar storyline came out Armageddon by Michael Bay.
AndiOh, I did see that movie. which
Tannermade
SupsBut according to astronomers, deep Impact is actually more scientifically Accurate than
Andithat. An entire planet could just shake its orbit,
Tannereven with Mars coming in to
Andiyeah. What?
SupsAnd so it has a 38% score on rotten tomatoes.
AndiOh boy. so not so good.
Supshas 44%.
TannerYeah. Yes. Sounds like you didn't even try with the fake name
Supsthere. No, no. All the movie names
Andiare the real, yeah. Right. So is this plot real? Hmm. Um,
TannerRight away it sounds super fake,
AndiI think I remember this movie. Existed.
TannerYes. I know it's a classic disaster movie came out around the same time as
AndiArmageddon. Yes. And has a similar plot. Yeah. So yeah, the whole thing that it's Mars and it's supposedly more scientifically accurate, like, The whole planet shook its orbit, a whole planet that formed when the entire solar system formed. Yep. Just shook its orbit and that you could just move its little dinky moons. Cuz Mars has dinky moons They're little like potatoes in the sky. We're talking about an entire planet.
Tannerand then you get this Air Force pilot, he's gonna save us
Andiall. Oh, but that part, that part sounds, no, that's fine. That's par for the course. Okay. That's par for the chorus for this kind of movie? No. That, that part's not suspicious at all. I think it could be just a regular
Tannerass. Okay.
AndiYeah.
TannerJust like arm. Okay.
AndiAnd then, yeah, also the whole idea of like this bunker, like this is silly. Like what is this? Weird
TannerThat's super sketchy.
AndiBut I don't know, man, this is hard. How do you know? I don't do movies,
Tannerso they're already so outlandish.
Andidon't know. Yeah.
TannerAll right. Okay. Halfway through,
SupsHalfway through. Movie number three, contagion
Tannerwith Gwyneth Ptro. And is Matt Damon in that too?
SupsOkay. Okay.
AndiAlright.
SupsSo when Beth Moff returns to Minnesota, from a Hong Kong business She feels sick, and so she's like, oh, must be jet lag. But two days later, she's dead. And the doctors tell her shocked husband played by Matt Damon that they have no idea what. So the Beth m h of course, is going Paltro.
Andioh wait, Gwyneth Ptro dies in like the first act. Yeah. Oh, okay. So who, so she's not actually really in that movie,
Tannerdies right away
Supsway.
AndiGreat. that was a very costly cameo.
TannerYeah.
SupsAnd then soon many others start to exhibit the same symptoms. And before you know it, a global pandemic explodes. Everyone's quarantining. doctors try to contain the lethal microbe, but American society begins to collapse as a blogger starts sharing some conspiracy theories. Jude Law, placed this character he starts blogging about the virus. He says that he cured himself of the virus using a homeopathic cure. So people start looking for this cure across pharmacies in the US
AndiDo real. shut it down. This one is not a real movie. This is just real life. And soups is saying This was a movie and put Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow in it
Tannerfor Oh, it's so real.
AndiYeah, He's just describing what happened during the Covid Pandemic and then is like, yeah, this was a movie before covid. I'm like, Uhhuh? Yeah, sure. Soups.
TannerYou could just recite the plot from memory, like what happened? Oh, this person
Andiyou. I'll tell you. did. the president pretend to not
Supsbe sick
AndiYeah. Yeah. And then very dramatically take his mask off.
TannerIs this blogger actually like podcaster
AndiRight. Is was these horsey, worm was the medicine that they were talking.
SupsUm, have to
Andiwatched
Tannerit's scary how accurate it is if it's
Andireal. Honestly, it it's like frustrating at how predictable all of it was. Yeah. But then somehow no one predicted any of the actual
TannerMm-hmm. Like this guy did the research, these script writers, they looked this stuff up. Yeah. They figured out what would happen, what
Andiwhat should happen. And then people literally did all the things they
Tannersaid
Andithen, I think soups is just, you know, he's just pulling our legs. Yeah. This is like, contagion is, it's an entirely different virus. It's an entirely different
TannerRight.
Andiyou know, a a disaster movie. I'm expecting like 28 days later, I'm expecting people to go full face eating zombie on people. So like, just like cuff cuff, I'm in the hospital and I
TannerNo, that's not movie. She needs to be like suffering with like the bubonic plague for like weeks And
AndiAnd they're like, are we gonna get a vaccine in time
TannerOh no.
AndiYeah. What's the treatment? Who, yeah. Like I don't know how dramatic this movie sounds. Yeah. Doesn't sound very
Tannercan make it better.
SupsAll right, then onto the last movie movie number four, geo Storm. the Earth has gone through a lot of natural disasters, right? There's been suddenly a rise in an unprecedented series, So the world's leaders, they come together. They're like, we gotta solve this problem. They create an intricate network of satellites to control the global climate and keep everyone safe.
TannerOh wow. That can't go wrong.
AndiYeah,
SupsBut now something
Andihas gone wrong.
Tannercourse,
SupsThe system which was built to protect the earth malfunctions and starts attacking Earth and now, Race against time to uncover what the real threat is before a worldwide geo storm wipes out everything.
AndiOh Some high
Supsmore disasters strike around the world. There are tornadoes in Mumbai, a major heat wave in Moscow, a mega tsunami in Dubai, hailstones in Tokyo. And so of course, the hero, is Jared, but, He's a scientist who races against time. The movie released in 2017
TannerHmm.
AndiThat's fairly recent.
TannerYeah. It sounds like they ran out of natural disasters and they're like, oh, we're gonna control
Andithe world. Let's, and then they all let's do all of them. Yeah. Honestly, this one sounds pretty real as a movie, right? Like this sounds like the plot of a movie that somebody would write. Yeah. And then it's harder to see where maybe soups, fudged something, cuz it kind of just is like, yeah, okay. There's just Magic science makes Super Storm in that we just want big super storm drama. And then ARD Butler seems like an obvious choice for the, you know, white man superhero who's gonna save us all. So, yeah, I mean, this one is the only one I really have a hard time seeing, like what soups could have
TannerYeah, but also a lot of it, it seems like those attention grabbing headlines, you know, like tornadoes in Mumbai and hail in Tokyo, like that's just scratching the surface of the actual plot. I feel like, you know, like that would be one scene. So like if I was to make up a movie, I would do that same thing. I would say like it has this and that and this. But I think the underlying plot is really, really creative.
Andiyeah, this one sounds like this is a movie and this is what it's like. Mm-hmm. I don't see as many places where soups could have made something up.
TannerOkay. I'm still on the fence about it though. I gotta hear all four of them again before I pick.
AndiYeah.
SupsOkay, so the four movies were movie number one, the Impossible. Movie number two, deep Impact, movie number three, contagion and movie number four, geo Storm.
Andione of those has a slightly changed plot where the plot is not what you said it was. I have not seen any of them, So
TannerI've seen some scenes from some of them. Okay. But not all of them. So I'm still. Curious about which one is a
AndiSo which one do you think,
TannerI think number one sounds perfect. Sounds exactly right. deep impact sounds so outlandish. kind of leaning towards that one. Contagion. Yeah, I've heard of that one. I'm pretty sure it's scarily accurate to the covid situation. And the fourth one I'm really thrown by because I have not heard of this, and it's got like all the disasters, so I'm leaning towards that one.
AndiOh, okay. You think soups just like threw everything at this, and change the plot into just like it's every
TannerYeah. But the real movie's like one disaster.
AndiSure. Okay. I am gonna go with one of the kids. Died in the first one. Oh, nice. Yeah. I wanna kill one of the kids.
TannerSo you believe that the second one has Mars?
AndiHonestly, no.
Tannerwant the
Supskids to
AndiNo. I just think it's like, the lie's gonna be something more subtle.
TannerOkay.
Andiit was too feel good for a disaster movie and especially a disaster movie based on reality. and also kind of icky if it's like, look, this white family all lived, but then like how many hundreds of thousands of people in Southeast Asia died? So let's kill Tom
Tannerall right?
Supsin his debut film.
AndiYeah, yeah. Alright. I don't know.
TannerOkay. Yeah, I think it's. Fourth one, although I really, really don't think that it's Mars in the second one, but I think it's the fourth one cause I don't know what geo storm is about.
SupsOkay. All right. Okay. We've got impossible and we've got geo storm. Both of you are right in your own way, let's put it this it's not Mars. It's a comet that's coming. Oh
AndiOkay. sure that that's much more realistic. And you did say how people are like, yeah, the science makes more sense cuz it's like Mars, an entire planet got dished.
Supsbut geo strong. No, a hundred percent.
TannerWow. Gerard Butler has to
Supssolve problems at once. Yeah.
AndiAnd basically you mean
Supsif Yeah. That saw that movie. Yeah. But contention is basically, That's Covid.
Andidon't like that. I don't
SupsThe whole film is just Covid. And it came out in like 2011.
AndiSo it's not Mars. I mean, that makes sense. And that's also like the most famous, I think, of the four that we had just talked about. so Deep Impact really is even more like Armageddon than you mentioned and it came out like the same time. Well, that's very funny. But also I feel really bad for Over Made it because you know, like you get overshadowed by Armageddon
TannerYeah, That's
Anditrue. Okay. Well, dang. but I guess I should have known.
TannerI should have known. all
AndiThanks for listening to this episode of the I Should Have Known podcast. We'll be continuing our Earth Day theme for the rest of the month. I think we have one more episode with that coming and if we could ask you for a favor, can you do the podcast version of Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and give us a five star rating wherever you listen to podcasts, cuz it really helps us out. And It would leave a deep impact in our hearts and as always, thanks.
TannerDamn Damnit Tinner.
