Brexit and Northern Ireland: the stirring of a painful past in today’s communities.
Two murders this year have sent shocking echoes of Northern Ireland past: that of Lyra Mckee, attributed to the “New IRA”, and the other of Ian Ogle attributed to the UVF. With Brexit approaching the risk that Northern Ireland’s painful past could be back in the present is on the rise. Matthew McGregor talks with Matthew Collins about his recent interview with East Belfast figures close to the leadership of the UVF in East Belfast. These figures are in a position to give a real insight into the group’s motivations and plans. The two Matthews discuss how Brexit is uniquely placed to drive a wedge between communities.
