Grasp the Bible

Digital Discipleship

Spring Baptist Church

Welcome to episode 235 of Grasp the Bible. In this episode, we will examine the topic of digital discipleship.

Key takeaways:

  • Technology isn’t just a tool we use; it’s a tool that uses us—or more precisely, it shapes our habits, expectations, attention, and relationships.
  • If we don’t anchor identity in Christ, we will anchor it in public approval, and that becomes a new form of slavery.
  • Sometimes what looks like a “spiritual problem” is also a formed habit problem—people are exhausted and overstimulated.
  • The challenge isn't to reject technology completely, but to use it in ways that honor God and build His kingdom.

Quotable:

We become what we repeatedly do.

Application:

  • The phrase "think on these things" means to calculate, consider carefully, or meditate on. It's an accounting term—we should carefully evaluate what we allow into our minds through screens.
  • The battle for your life is won or lost in your thought life. Guard your mind with the same vigilance you'd guard your home.
  • There is no "off the clock" for the Christian. Your social media isn't a "free zone" where different rules apply. The same Lord who sees you in worship sees you on Facebook at 11 PM.
  • You wouldn't let a thief into your house to steal your possessions. Why do you voluntarily hand him your phone and let him steal your hours?
  • Evaluate your screen time with one question:  Is this helping me love God and love my neighbor—or training me to love myself and the world?
