Death Space: Filling the Void
Death Space: Filling the Void
The Wind Phone with Film Director Kristen Gerweck
In March of 2011 a tsunami struck Japan resulting in the deaths of 20,000 people. To help cope with the trauma and grief, a wind phone was placed along the water's edge. A wind phone is a pay phone that's not connected with phone lines. They're meant to be spaces where people can have conversations with the departed to help with the grieving process. In her film, 'The Wind Phone' Writer and Director Kristen Gerweck captures the essence of Japan's wind phone. We spoke about her film, the challenges related to shooting a movie with such heavy subject matter and how Kristen brought her own grieving experience to the project.
