The Liz Callaway Show with Nick Summers, bringing you the voices that make you think right now on Talk 94.5.
SPEAKER_00All right, we were lucky enough to meet with Todd. I think it was Patty Kane that introduced us. Todd is the owner of the Voodoo Brewing Company in Myrtle Beach at Broadway at the beach. Good morning.
SPEAKER_02Morning, guys. Thanks for having me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So I have to ask you the first question. Some people think you were located somewhere else.
SPEAKER_02Yes, there this is a franchise, so there was another owner down in Myrtle's Inlet.
SPEAKER_00Oh, okay. That explains the mystery.
SPEAKER_02Yep. He had opened um about a year ago. Unfortunately, he had to close and rebranded as uh something else down there.
SPEAKER_00Okay, all right. So your Voodoo Brewing Company is at Broadway at the beach, and it's right by the Dave and Busters. You can see it from the street. You can park right there on the street. It has outdoor dining, indoor dining, entertainment, and um you are a veteran.
SPEAKER_02Yes, I spent 22 years in the Marine Corps. Uh grew up in New Jersey, and after 9-11, my brother and I went to the recruiter's office, signed up, went back home, told our parents, and left for boot camp.
SPEAKER_00Now, this is something that it runs in your family, right? The military service.
SPEAKER_02I've got several people who serve throughout the years.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because that would give me a heart attack as a mom. If both my sons came home and said, We did it.
SPEAKER_02They're very proud, but uh happy we did it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So what did you um what did you and what did your brother do?
SPEAKER_02Uh I was in reconnaissance. Uh my brother was an electrician. He spent uh one contract in the service, then he he got out, moved back home. But I enjoyed it, just kept on going. And eventually 22 years later, uh, hung up my hat and tried something different.
SPEAKER_00Okay, excellent. So uh we spoke to Tom Winslow yesterday of Winslow Law Firm, and um they're doing a Kentucky Derby event, uh, Hooves, Hats, and Hearts. So I just want to give them a shout out one more time because it's for Helping Hand. That's an organization we helped with our spring food drive. That's happening this Saturday at 4 p.m. Uh rain or shine, and um admission is free, but they'll have all sorts of uh derby-inspired games and they are collecting food during that event. And then when we asked you, hey, would you be um interested in supporting uh movers for moms for moms staying at the family shelter down in the city of Myrtle Beach? You said sign me up. So why do you like to do these uh community events?
SPEAKER_02Well, I think it's important to give back to the community, um, to get involved in the community. Um there's plenty of places around here to eat and drink at, so it's sometimes tough to stand out, but you know, there's a lot of different um organizations uh that just need some extra support, so we're just happy to give back.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. Well, I love that. Um so we always tie our anniversary party to the Movers for Moms because it's always before Mother's Day. And Two Men in a Truck does this event every year where they collect toiletry and beauty items um for moms uh to make gift baskets for Mother's Day, and then they let the kids pick out the gift baskets uh the day before Mother's Day, and then on Mother's Day morning, the children give their moms the basket they picked out, which I think is so cool. That's sweet. So, yeah, it really is. So Wednesday, May 6th, we're gonna be at the Voodoo Brewing Company at 5 30 p.m. And uh you're gonna be putting out a little bit of a buffet for us.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we'll have some of our um food items there, um, our wings, our bang bang shrimp, and our pub pretzels served with our beer cheese, our beer mustard that we make in-house.
SPEAKER_00That's awesome.
SPEAKER_01My wife had it says great.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I I can't wait. I love listen, I'm from New York and I miss those pretzels on the street.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I love those pretzels.
SPEAKER_00Do you do dirty water dogs?
SPEAKER_02Someone asked about that the other day. Uh we thought about bringing it in for a special because that is uh I love hot dogs.
SPEAKER_00Oh my gosh. I love Do you ever have a dirty water dog in Manhattan?
SPEAKER_01No. Remember we went there to go to the gene thing? We were going to, but we were late into the mustard? We did. Yes. We did have a property.
SPEAKER_00Did you put mustard on it? Yes, yes, yes, yes. Okay. Did you have a kanish?
SPEAKER_02No.
SPEAKER_00Do you serve canishes?
SPEAKER_02Not yet, but we always have specials, so it might be a good idea.
SPEAKER_00I'm asking me about things I don't have on the menu list. I'm just asking. Welcome to my world.
SPEAKER_01It's always about what you don't have, not what you do have.
SPEAKER_00So annoying. Uh, but you do have a signature drink. We had talked about a seven-year-itch drink, and you came up with one.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, my bartenders came up with uh the seven-year-itch drink. It'll be seven dollars, and it'll be vodka-based with elderberry and uh strawberry syrup.
SPEAKER_01Wait, so it's so it's health kind of based.
SPEAKER_02We try to stay healthy.
SPEAKER_01Right. So when I come the next day and I'm half in the elderberry, I'm gonna give you anti-itch cream for a gift.
SPEAKER_00Alrighty. Because you know, seven-year itch has a lot of negative connotations. It does? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay. All right.
SPEAKER_00Have you been married seven years?
SPEAKER_02Can you can you make can we double that?
SPEAKER_01Okay. Yeah. See me too. Can you make a drink with Calamine or something? That'd be great. I mean, you know, come on. We could try.
SPEAKER_00All right. So um, by the way, HTC is presenting this event, this Conway Ford Talk La Melodage event, and they're giving us an iPad to give away, Nick.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Isn't that awesome? I know. Sorry, I'm dealing with multiple things going on here.
SPEAKER_00So we have an anniversary party, but you get a chance to get the gift. From HTC. And you have a box set up there already.
SPEAKER_02We already have the box. We can start collecting items right now. So um stop on in, uh, drop it off in the box.
SPEAKER_00All right. Maybe this Friday when you go to karaoke.
SPEAKER_02Yes. Every Friday we have karaoke, starts at seven, so bring a gift, drop in the box, and then sing a song.
SPEAKER_00Okay. And um how how are the singers that are coming in?
SPEAKER_02Surprisingly very good. Um there's a lot of great singers that come in here. We have this really old gentleman that comes in. He's he sings really like Frank Sinatra songs, older songs. Uh-huh. He belts it out, sings a few songs, and leaves. It's it's great.
SPEAKER_00He just scratches his itch. There you go. To be a performer.
SPEAKER_02Probably Frank in display.
SPEAKER_00I wonder if it is. You never know. You never know. All right. And uh, you're having your own anniversary party as well.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we open May uh 10th of 2024. So we'll be having our two-year anniversary party on May 9th, right before Mother's Day. Um it'll be an all-day affair. We've got uh DJ from two to five playing 90s and early 2000s music.
SPEAKER_00Oh my.
SPEAKER_02That's my that's my era. Um my wife and I love that. We love that type of music. And then we have a live.
SPEAKER_00Wait, do you dance?
SPEAKER_02I can't dance, no.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so what nineties and two thousands, like like dance club music? Club music? Well, it's like house music?
SPEAKER_02A mixture of stuff, you know, in sync, some you know, some wrap. Wow. All the good stuff. They have some snap bracelets, some glow sticks.
SPEAKER_00Oh my gosh, yes. That's so funny. Yeah, it's a little it's a little um, you know, I kind of grew up in the 80s, early 90s. So um, but but you know what? We had all those slap bracelets and everything too. Okay, so that's going on, and then you have a classic rock singer from six to eight.
SPEAKER_02Yep, yep. So Keith, he's played at our uh place a few times. He's also played at uh other breweries around the Grand Strand. So cool. He's great.
SPEAKER_00All right. That's happening on May 9th. It's a Saturday, so it's kind of an all-day thing. Two to five with the DJ, six to eight. Do you have any specials going on that day?
SPEAKER_02Uh we'll have uh food and drink specials all day.
SPEAKER_00Okay. All right. So tell us what is on your menu. Like what can people expect? I mean, sometimes people go to a pub and they look for that traditional pub food.
SPEAKER_02So I like to say we have upscale pub food. We make everything in-house. Um, our burgers come in fresh. We actually came in second place for best burgers at Broadway at the beach.
SPEAKER_00Nice.
SPEAKER_02Um, it's a fresh patty, uh, not frozen. Come it's an Angus beef, ground brisket, ground chuck, and we get our buns from Benjamin's bakery. So a nice fresh product. We like to support local businesses. They've been doing this. They've been doing this for 30 years, so they know what they're doing.
SPEAKER_00Yes, absolutely.
SPEAKER_02Um, so our burgers are great. Um our pickle pizza is the most popular pizza that we saw.
SPEAKER_00All right, now you have to explain this because as a New Yorker, we don't put pickles on our pizzas.
SPEAKER_02If you like pickles, this is definitely one to try.
SPEAKER_00It's are they fried pickles?
SPEAKER_02Uh they're dill pickles, uh, but we bake them you know on the pizza. Oh. Um so it's pesto based sauce, mozzarella cheese. We put the dill pickles on top, put it in the oven, and then when it comes out, we dust it with some dill seasoning. Oh and it pairs very well with beer, of course.
SPEAKER_01See, I was always taught that the pickle and Italian stuff don't go together.
SPEAKER_00Well, when you bake it, listen, it's high. I will try it. No, no, I'm not really knocking. I know. I like it. I think we're gonna have to order that because you can still order from the menu when you come to our party. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Let's order that and try it.
SPEAKER_00All right, that's a deal.
SPEAKER_01Well, we have a couple of seven-year-itch drinks.
SPEAKER_00Well, you know what? When I had the bagel store, we had pickle soup. And it was the most popular thing ever. And the previous owner had it, and we didn't have it, and they were like, why don't you have the pickle soup? So we had to make the pickle soup.
SPEAKER_02So there's pickle fanatics out there.
SPEAKER_00Yes, they're good for you.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00All right. All right. What else do you want to highlight that's on your menu?
SPEAKER_02Uh, we're just happy to have people stop by um for all these events. Just follow us on social media. You can check out our events on our website. Um, we're always um, you know, doing different things.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I love it. And uh you have a great bar there to watch um games.
SPEAKER_02We do have a big projector that shines on our wall. So, you know, whether it's a big game, the horse race coming up, or just watching music videos.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Very cool. Tell us about the beer end of it. So you have the connoisseur of the beer, and Voodoo Brewing Company is the basis of the model.
SPEAKER_02Correct. So Voodoo uh Brewing Company is a franchise. They brew the beer for us in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Um I have 20 taps.
SPEAKER_00Have you been there?
SPEAKER_02I have not been to this to the site where they brew the beer. Okay. Um, one day, hopefully.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh we have 20 beers. Half of them will be about voodoo beers, and then I bring in guest taps from local breweries in North and South Carolina. Cool. Um, so they're always rotating. Um, we have our signature beers are always on tap, and then we have our uh voodoo beers that are seasonal ones as well.
SPEAKER_00This one sounds delicious.
SPEAKER_02The amber beer?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02From uh Side Hustle. Yeah, they're down in Hilton Head.
SPEAKER_00Cool. It has a caramel maltiness.
SPEAKER_01I like caramel.
SPEAKER_00Me too. I love caramel.
SPEAKER_01I like the IPAs. What are the IPAs you have IPAs you have again?
SPEAKER_02We have five different ones on tap now. Again, they're always rotating. Um my favorite is our good vibes, one of our flagship beers that we always have on tap. It's a West Coast style IPA at 7.3%. Um Thunder. What is this blue one? That blue one is the blue quencher from Low Tide Brewing Company down in Charleston. It's a seltzer, and people go crazy for it. It's only 5%. It's dangerously good. You can drink.
SPEAKER_00I was gonna say only 5%. That would knock me out, a couple of those. Okay, and she's a cheap date. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Don't judge by her.
SPEAKER_00No. Oh, what's this? Munkel Pilsner.
SPEAKER_02Uh yeah, Munkel Brewing Company, they're down in Charleston as well. And we've we bring in some of their uh different style beers. Right now we have the German Pilsner on tap.
SPEAKER_00Do you do like flights where people can try different things?
SPEAKER_02Yep, we have uh flight boards. You can choose up to six different ones. They're four-ounce tasers, so it's a good way to kind of sample a few before you commit to a full pour or share it with your significant other.
SPEAKER_00All right. Um and the Voodoo Love Child?
SPEAKER_02That's another one of our flagship beers. It's a triple uh Belgian beer uh with notes of strawberry, passion berry, and raspberry.
SPEAKER_00All right. Well, if you plan on engaging and uh partaking in some of these beers, you know.
SPEAKER_01Somebody's already looked ahead on the menu and said, Hey, I want to try this deviled egg flight thing you got going on.
SPEAKER_00That is very popular.
SPEAKER_02Yes, so um, you know, my my cooks are fantastic, and they they started this in December and it just kind of started taking off. And every month we come up with a signature egg flight. You get four different flavors, um, two of each flavor. And this month they were dyed different colors because of Easter. Um we'll be we'll be posting, you know, the new flavors probably today or tomorrow. Um and they're available all month long. And yeah, it they actually outsell our wings to believe it or not. I when I looked up our product mix, I'm like, you know, we're selling more eggs than wings. That's crazy. It's kind of crazy. And our wings are good, they're baked and fried and different sauces. But um I'm I can't wait to try the wings.
SPEAKER_01How many different sauces are available? How many different like flavors?
SPEAKER_02Uh we have a dry rub, a chili lime dry rub, and then we have four different um sauces.
SPEAKER_01Teriaki one of them?
SPEAKER_02No. You know, that's okay. We have a standard buffalo, uh, we have our good vibes barbecue, which we do add our good vibes beer to it and a few other.
SPEAKER_00I'm getting hungry.
SPEAKER_02I know. Me too.
SPEAKER_00I'm looking at this Pasta La Vista baby. No, I'm talking about wings now. Looking at his pizza.
SPEAKER_01What else with the others?
SPEAKER_02Uh a kickback, which is another spicy one that the my cooks came up with. Okay. And then a sriracha ranch.
SPEAKER_01Oh, you said the magic word for my wife. Sriracha. Sriracha, sriracha. Yeah. All right, I'm gonna try them all. Yeah. I'm not gonna eat the whole day so I can try a lot. Blue cheese or ranch. Ranch. Blue cheese.
SPEAKER_02Todd? Yeah, ranch. Blue cheese. I go both. I like to dip them both. I get both of them.
SPEAKER_01I don't dip wings in any any sauce. What? No, I eat them just as is. That's weird. No, it's not. You dip the fries in the ranch. No. I'm just telling you, that's what I do anywhere else. Anyway, I don't care. I don't care about that. I just want to try all the wings. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00All right. So I saw here you can join the VIP club. Tell me more about that.
SPEAKER_02Uh yeah, it's based it's on our website. So if you join, you know, you'll get uh offers, you know, to your email or or text message to you. And then you know, the more you order um online, you know, the more you can save.
SPEAKER_00What do you mean order online? I can order online.
SPEAKER_02Well, yeah, we have uh online ordering, so you can uh have DoorDash, you can order through DoorDash, or you can go to our website and order through our website and then uh either pick it up yourself or have a delivery uh to you for a small charge. I think it's like maybe five bucks.

Or you go to DoorDash and order it and pay higher fees. It's it's weird. I I know. Wow. Don't tell DoorDash, they'll cancel their deal. Hey, what is this? Did you already listen to us? SPEAKER_01We got like 10 people. We've lost the original eight. Um, what happened when 500 bucks by entering? Do we win a by writing a dish review? What? There's all kinds of fun stuff on your website.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's through Pop Menu, who who creates our website. So they're the ones who would um give that$500 uh gift card.

SPEAKER_02Yeah, we just need your social security number and bank accounts.
SPEAKER_01Okay, X out of there.

SPEAKER_02My wings are for breakfast. I checked the rule book. I know, right? You can have cold pizza anytime.
SPEAKER_00Yes, I love cold pizza for breakfast. So um, yeah.
SPEAKER_02For hours, uh we open every day at 11, and then during the week, right now we're we close at nine. Friday and Saturday, we close at 11, and Sundays we close at 8. But as we get busier, we might extend that you know a little bit to the right.
SPEAKER_01Oh, you even want the wedding anniversary, so we get little prizes for our wedding anniversary.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, a little invite. I like that. Yeah. Um, so if I came and sang, would you throw me out?
SPEAKER_02No, I sang and I uh no one threw me out.
SPEAKER_00So what did you sing?
SPEAKER_02Well, my business partner put me up to it. Um and so it's uh it was a Madonna song. Tell me it was like a virgin.
SPEAKER_00It was you totally turned in your man card.
SPEAKER_02It was the longest song. I felt like I was up there for a half hour.
SPEAKER_00That is so funny.
SPEAKER_01One and done, that was it. Never again. I I don't think I want to have discussions with you. Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_00That is so funny. Well, Todd, it's really great getting to know you. We met you over at the Veterans Cafe. Was that where we were?
