SPEAKER_01

That's right. She makes us think at every staff meeting. It's Chelsea Renee from Easy. What's your numbers there? I'm so bad at this. I can't even remember our own numbers.

SPEAKER_02

I know. We're right down the hop.

SPEAKER_01

See, that's what makes us so bad. Yes, you're 105.9 and 107 100.7.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, yes. 105.9 Myrtle Beach, 100.7 Georgetown.

SPEAKER_01

All right. So tell us, what do you do over there, Miss Chelsea Renee?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, it's uh a lot, you know, uh program director, on air personality, also production director. Look at that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's a lot. You got a lot of titles. You must do, you must be so busy.

SPEAKER_00

Special whipcracker. You got a spot new today.

SPEAKER_01

No, no, she doesn't say that. She says, where is it?

SPEAKER_02

No, it's a lot nicer than that.

SPEAKER_01

Please put it in there. Um, yeah, so Chelsea Renee was telling us at a staff meeting that she's going to get locked up, and none of us were surprised.

unknown

None at all.

SPEAKER_00

But I was ready to bring in like a bottle tequila and a cake and a file to get and you were like, no, I don't do that anymore.

SPEAKER_02

I quit. And then I added four a good calls, and everybody was like, oh, that's right.

SPEAKER_01

So um, so tell us a little bit about how you got roped into this.

SPEAKER_02

So we learned about neighbor to neighbor and what they did in our area last year. So on Easy Radio, we have a feature called Myrtle Beach Cares where we highlight groups in the area that are just doing good, trying to get their information out there, people to help them, or if somebody needs help. And we had highlighted neighbor to neighbor. And when I heard about what they did, it was uh I just really connected with it because of some past experiences. And so when I heard about this event coming up, I was like, yeah, sign me up, lock me up, lock me up, lock me up. So we're gonna lock Chelsea up when?

SPEAKER_01

It's going to be tomorrow. Cinco de Mayo. Cinco de Mayo. Yeah. Look at you. Yeah. So I want to. But so what time does this start?

SPEAKER_00

Wait, so I was writing on the tequila.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. I mean, maybe later after the lockup. When we get her, break her out of jail. So it's gonna cost us$500 to get you out of jail, but it's all for a good cause. So explain the process and then we'll talk to Shauna, who you brought in today from Neighbor to Neighbor, to learn more about what they do and why this is such a good cause.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, so tomorrow I'm going to be at just a really awful place to be locked up at Grand Stran Brewing.

SPEAKER_00

No wonder you don't need to my alcohol. Yeah, you don't need me to bring alcohol. You'll have your own.

SPEAKER_02

And I'll be there starting at nine o'clock, and I'm not gonna be able to get out until I meet my bail. So I'm gonna be texting people because I'm a millennial. I'm gonna be texting, I'm gonna be emailing, posting on social media. Facebook Living from jail? Yeah, that's it. Did they allow that? Yeah, they would allow that. Okay. They would allow that. Begging? Yes, begging. Any amount? Any amount. Even if it's just a dollar, I will take it. That you know, adds to the total.

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely. And you only need 500 of those dollars to break you out. And uh I did post the link on our Facebook page, our talk radio page, because neighbor to neighbor is a wonderful organization. We've talked to them many times over the years here. But not only that, um when you click on the link, it's really in for uh Palmetto Giving Day, and in many cases there's a match. Yes.

SPEAKER_02

Sometimes yes, uh 25,000. Uh I learned about that in our little kind of QA so that I knew exactly how this was all going to work.

SPEAKER_01

And that's why we wanted to save it for Palmetto Giving Day. So it kind of you amplifying that message of the match. Well, you brought someone along with you. Uh this is Shauna Austin from Neighbor to Neighbor, and she is the program manager. Good morning. Good morning. Thank you so much for coming. Thank you. So tell us a little bit about what neighbor to neighbor does.

SPEAKER_03

Neighbor to neighbor, uh, we're a local nonprofit. We service Ori, Georgetown, and Williamsburg counties. We provide free medical rides, relieve isolation by friendly phone calls and companionship to our neighbors that are older adults, adults with disabilities, and veterans. Okay. So um I know you have an office, I've seen it somewhere. We do. It's at the 350 Hilton Road, right by the tanker outlets.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, okay. I know I've passed it. Um, okay, so if people are interested in doing volunteer work, what are some of the roles that they can have?

SPEAKER_03

Um they drive um uh for um they just pick up our rides. Um we send out a calendar each week to them and um they pick up um rides that people are in in need of medical rides. Um and they also call um family. Um our volunteer our clients that uh don't have family in the area and they need um just a friendly phone call or um companionship to our volunteers go into houses and um do puzzles or um just entertain them and make them break up the day. Yeah, make them feel they're not alone.

SPEAKER_01

So some of the things that I've known is, you know, first of all, you know, all of this is kind of like a well visit as well, you know, just to check in with people. But um what we've learned, what I've learned unfortunately, when people are alone day in and day out, a TV does not stimulate the brain enough to um warrant uh cognitive um I guess uh wellness. And so when you're not talking to people and not having a back and forth conversation, whether it be on the phone or definitely in person, not having that human interaction, you literally start to lose your mind.

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Um and it is that cognitive decline, those your ears aren't hearing human speech, you're not communicating, and so it actually speeds up decline where there wouldn't maybe be any. Yes. And and not to not to mention the mental health part of it. The mental health declines. Yeah. So if you're someone who's looking to do something um, you know, with your time and something constructive, neighbor to neighbor could be a great thing. I mean, uh, people drive their own car. Um, you can donate an hour, you can donate more than that, more times a week, but even one day a month or whatever, because um one of the things that I know about it is people are like, Well, you mean I have to stay and wait for the medical appointment? No, you don't.

SPEAKER_03

No, they can just drop off, run an errand or do their own grocery. We also um will take them grocery shopping so they can go in, the volunteer can do their own grocery shopping while they're um waiting for somebody to do their essential um grocery shopping for the week.

SPEAKER_01

So it's uh it's a very flexible way to participate in helping um people and like you said, you could be uh like a designated caller where you call people up and um just have a conversation, check in or go for a visit.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, we are always looking for volunteers, they are very essential, very important in the community.

SPEAKER_01

And if you know someone who's in need of this type of service, how do you qualify for it? And what is the vetting process of the people that are visiting the recipients?

SPEAKER_03

Um we do a an extensive um background check and um uh fingerprinting, but um we do um service uh you have to just be an older adult that is fifty-five and older, um a veteran or um adults with disabilities.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. So it's not a financial need. No. It's just uh you can call yourself and ask for it or a loved one can.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, that is correct. And we have a simple application that you just simply fill out um and um then they can just start requesting rides or um companionship. What's the um like the radius that you guys service? What's the area? We service Ori, Georgetown, and Williamsburg County. Oh wow, so like a 4,000 client.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

That's a lot. How many clients do you have? We have uh 1,100 clients and 200 volunteers. So it sounds like you need more volunteers. We need more volunteers, it's very essential.

SPEAKER_01

So w how important is this Palmetto Giving Day for the financial part and the financial need of neighbor to neighbor? How do you normally get your financing?

SPEAKER_03

Um we mostly get from uh we get a lot from donors. Um we do get some um you know, the match is very important to raise that that dollar. Um so we do get the match from uh the B Bonell Foundation. Um we do to get other assistance um from other government agencies. Um but we uh don't have, you know, the the donor is such an important um necessity because we have restricted funds and non-restricted funds. So our restricted funds you have to do, you know, it has to go down to program for certain things. Yeah. And then the unrestricted is the the most important.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. It gives you flexibility on how to support the program and all that. All right, so tell me more about this match. So if you guys raise how much tomorrow? It's two days long? Yeah, it's 36 hours. 36 hours for Palmetto Giving Day. And how much do you have to raise to get the match? Or is it up to? I believe it's 25,000. You have to get to 25,000 to get matched 25,000. I believe so. But our goal is sixty. Oh, okay. What have you reached in the past?

SPEAKER_03

We were at 55 last year. Okay. And I think the year before it was 35. Did you get the match last year? Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. That's awesome. That's a huge boost. Okay, so um Chelsea Renee is part of this. So tell us about this lockup event.

SPEAKER_03

Um, the lockup event is um it's at Grand Strand Brewery on uh Tuesday, May 5th, from 9 to 1. And it's just a a playful jail and bail um where all of um the people that are getting locked up have a certain amount of bail, anywhere from three to five hundred dollars. Um, you went some you went full out.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I think I think that they tried to set everybody at 500 because that right there, if if everybody involved reaches the plea bargain down to a couple hundred. If everybody reaches the five hundred, I I mean, I'm not I'm not great at math, but I think that's like half of their goal right there.

SPEAKER_00

It's okay. We don't do math on this show.

SPEAKER_01

I'm so glad. Thank heavens. We're dumb DJs with this deck. Um okay, so so 500 is your goal. And um, and then these people are gonna be locked up. There's a link that I did share on the page. Now, people don't have to literally go to the Grand Strand Brewery, but they can.

SPEAKER_02

Um I think it's probably best and easiest to donate online. Okay. On through that link, which you can check it out now, learn a little bit more about neighbor to neighbor yourself. And then tomorrow that's when the donation part of the link goes live. Okay. And you can donate then um you can even choose your own amount.

SPEAKER_01

But what they put here was fifty dollars provides two to three essential medical rides.$150 donation delivers a month of groceries to a homebound senior, two hundred and fifty dollars connects a neighbor to care and companionship, five hundred dollars supports a full week of coordinated transportation, and fifteen hundred dollars keeps an entire community corridor moving for a month. What does that mean? Community corridor.

SPEAKER_03

Um just keeps us action and our volunteers moving um and um providing those essential rides.

SPEAKER_01

So um the people that are providing the rides, I mean, obviously they're using their own vehicle, their own gas, um, their own time.

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

And is there any qualification other than a clean driver's license, I'm assuming?

SPEAKER_03

Um, but yeah, a clean drive uh driving record, um, and just somebody that wants to um get a lot out of it's very rewarding and I get uh and give back to your community. Okay.

SPEAKER_01

All right, we if you want to find out more about uh neighbor to neighbor, it's very easy to do. Of course, neighbor to neighbor has a website and they also have uh Facebook page. But I did post the link to Palmetto Giving Day for Chelsea Renee's um actual donation page, which will go live for donations tomorrow. Um and Palmetto Giving Day is going on for 36 hours, and there are many other wonderful organizations. So if you decide you're gonna donate something, you can split it amongst a mut a bunch of different ones. But today we're featuring neighbor to neighbor, and Chelsea Renee is locked up tomorrow at the Grand Strand Brewery in the city of Myrtle Beach from 9 to 1. Please bail me out.

SPEAKER_02

I want to be able to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

SPEAKER_00

You know what? We've uh we've this radio station needs to be something different. We've talked about it before. So we have people that have actually stuck with this station, and then you know they'll listen to you later. Yeah. They're listening now and they've said, oh, we got Nene. We got her, we got her, we're gonna help her out. Thank you.

SPEAKER_02

Thank you so much.

SPEAKER_00

Julie in particular. Yes, thank you so much, Julie.

SPEAKER_02

I reached out to Julie asking if she would potentially bail me out, and so and I knew I could count on Julie.

SPEAKER_00

And a few people are saying leave Glenn locked up, so I don't know why. What's going on with that?

SPEAKER_02

So Glenn is also locked up? He's not, but I can always throw him in with the. I'll just bring him along with me. That's a good idea. Will you be broadcasting live from there?

SPEAKER_01

Not broadcasting live except for maybe some Facebook Facebook Live. All right, well, we'll follow you tomorrow. Like I said, I did post the link for Chelsea Renee's um donor page uh right on our talk radio page. Anything else you'd like to add, Shauna?

SPEAKER_03

I just wanted to thank you so much for having me today. Yeah, my pleasure. Um please reach out to neighbor to neighbor at n2ncarolinas.org. All right.

SPEAKER_01

What's the phone number there if people want to call? 843-839-0702. All right. Very good. All right, Chelsea Renee and Shauna Austin from Neighbor to Neighbor. Thank you so much. Oh, thank you so much for coming in. We're gonna get you to that 500. I hope so. We'll be promoting it tomorrow because we'll be on the air for that final hour. It will be your first hour. Yes, thank you. Thank you.

SPEAKER_00

All right. Because we need to get you out so you can, you know. Celebrate. Celebrate tomorrow. Right. That very important Mexican holiday.

SPEAKER_01

All right, thanks, ladies. We'll be back in a moment.
