Mindful Minds entered my life in a time when I was at my loneliest and my most depressed.
In so many ways, this project saved my life. It gave me purpose, It gave me a reason to stick around.
I turned 25 this week, and I don’t recognize the 21 year old who sat down at her computer and googled, “how to start a podcast.”
In the last 4 years, she has grown and healed and gained so much confidence and peace and joy.
She has interviewed her heroes and learned from strangers.
I am so proud of her, and so proud of this community.
Thank you for your kindness and your support with this decision. Thank you for cheering me on and for accepting my decision to rest.
The fact that so many strangers have rallied around me and encouraged me for the last 3 years is unreal.
I am so proud of you all and how you’ve chosen to grow and heal.
I hope you know that it’s okay to rest too.
To my 67 guests: you have changed my life. You listened, you taught, and I am so honored to have continued to connect offline with so many of you. You made this podcast. Your expertise is what spearheaded this vision.
To the 48 countries, and 821 cities. To the thousands and thousands of listeners. Thank you thank you thank you. You turned a hobby into a community.
And one last time: to end our time, unclench your jaw, take a deep breath, and remember: you can always learn, you can always grow, and you can always choose to live your life in a more mindful way.
Goodbye for now,
Fina

Welcome to the LAST guest episode of Mindful Minds!! As a little thank you, I have released my religious trauma sticker collection!! You buy the stickers on Etsy here!
This week we have a super special guest. I am so excited to welcome Dr. Laura Anderson (she/her) to the podcast!! Dr. Laura’s work has been so impactful in my personal deconstruction journey, and it was such an honor to have her on the show.
Dr. Laura Anderson (PhD, Saybrook University; LMFT) is a therapist, trauma resolution and recovery coach, writer, educator, and creator who specializes in complex trauma with a focus on domestic violence, sexualized violence, and religious trauma. Laura has a private practice in Nashville, Tennessee, and is the founder and director of the Center for Trauma Resolution and Recovery, an online coaching company where she and the other practitioners work with clients who have experienced high demand/high control religions, adverse religious experiences, cults, and religious trauma.
In 2019, Laura cofounded the Religious Trauma Institute with the goal of providing trauma-informed resources, consultation, and training to clinicians and other helping professionals who work with religious trauma survivors.

Trigger warning: homophobia/transphobia, ableism, racism, the death of a young child & healing culture trauma, suicide, religious trauma, self harm (and scarring) and depression, and exorcisms/demonic expression
This week we have the lovely Kelley, Kelly Anne, & Emma (she/her) of @womanbeingpodcast on to talk about coping with the harm done while a part of fundamentalist evangelicalism. For many, including myself, it is a hard pill to swallow to come to terms with how you caused direct and indirect harm while in religion. It is easy to get defensive and can be really tricky to talk about. In this episode, we unpack the events that impacted us and were a catalyst to start deconstructing, how to take accountability, and how we've learned to sit in the nuance.
Woman Being is a community of people who host conversations in order gain perspective and see the humanity in others. This project was birthed out of a close group of friends getting lost in conversation so enriching that we decided to extend the invitation in the form of a podcast. They hope that as they explore this big, messy world and dive into the gray that you’ll find some gold in the midst of it too.
You can find Woman Being on social media @womanbeingpodcast , on all streaming platforms, and online here.

Apologies for some of the weird audio in this episode! We had a few technical difficulties while recording :-(
This week we have Kirah (she/her) of @thestrology on to talk about all things astrology! For a lot of people who grew up in religion, astrology was OFF limits. In this episode, we discuss the roots and realities of astrology, along with how to use it to heal.
Kirah is a professional astrologer and astrology teacher and consultant whose practice is rooted in the Hellenistic tradition. As a queer Black astrologer, Kirah is passionate about intersectionality and accessibility for those who want to learn astrology.
If you want to follow Kirah or work with her, you can find her online @thestrology and at thestrology.com as well as her podcast, Cosmic Guidance For All! You can also check out her private group, @joveshouse.

BUCKLE UP B*TCHES!!!
In this episode, we breakdown the 2016 Pure Flix film, "I'm Not Ashamed." This movie covers the story of Rachel Joy Scott and the 1999 Columbine Shooting: with lots of Christian propaganda and historical inaccuracy mixed in.
Come along with me as I cringe and critique this monstrosity of a movie.
Quick trigger warning for folks: talk about school shootings & gun violence, SA, su*cide, depression, addiction, ableism, purity culture, and overall patriarchal Christian misinformation.
Also also - if you haven't listened to ep 79, please listen for a MAJOR update on Mindful Mind's future.
xoxo Fina

Please listen to the beginning of this episode for a major update. I cannot thank you all enough for the last 3 years. You have changed my life. Thank you.
Trigger warning: homophobia, transphobia, self-hatred, discrimination, hate crimes, mental health distress, addiction, suicide, counseling abuse, emotional abuse, sexual assault & investigations, brief talk about school shootings via Columbine, graphic description of suicide (time stamp: 1:02:00-1:07:00).
This week we have the incredible Erin Green (She/They) of REAP (Religious Exemption Accountability Project) on the podcast to talk about homophobia and discrimination at Christian Colleges.
Erin (She/They) is the Campus and Alumni Organizer for REAP. They are an affirming biblical scholar and LGBTQIA+ activist. Erin has a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies from Azusa Pacific University and an M.Div. from San Francisco Theological Seminary.
If you listened to episode 24, we talk quite a bit about REAP. REAP fights for the safety, bodily autonomy, justice, and human rights of LGBTQIA+ and other communities marginalized at many predominantly white, taxpayer-funded religious schools and colleges. Using campus organizing, storytelling through podcasting, documentary film, and speaking and preaching on campuses throughout the country, REAP empowers students, faculty, staff and alumni at these institutions to advocate for human rights, while shining a light on the dangers and abuses of a major educational pipeline of white Christian Supremacy.
If you want to follow REAP and learn more about what they’re doing and how to support it, you can visit them online here and follow them @REAP_lgbtq . You can also reach out to REAP if you are a queer student who is facing discrimination or hatred in a religious school. REAP is also releasing a podcast called, “On God’s Campus,” soon so keep an eye open for that! Lastly, if you want to follow or connect with Erin directly, you can follow them at @_runningerins_ .

Content warning: talk about abortion
This week we have Ariana (she/her) on to talk about abortion rights and voting! Today is Election Day, and although we have been on a pause, I felt that it was important to share this episode today. Ariana worked for Vote Pro Choice at the time of recording, but is now working for a Texas abortion fund! We are so grateful to her for coming on and we are cheering her on at her new position!
Vote Pro Choice (@voteprochoice) mobilizes the nation’s prochoice majority to elect prochoice champions who protect and expand reproductive freedom at every level of government. Their digital-first tools have engaged over 50 million prochoice voters and helped elect hundreds of prochoice champion candidates.

Content warning: We talk about blood, surgery, and medical procedures in this episode!
This week we have Isabella (she/her) of @letstalkperiodau to talk about all things menstrual care & chronic illness! This is unlike any other episode we have done, but I felt like it was a really important topic to touch on.
For many of us who grew up in religious environments, we didn’t learn about our bodies or how to know if something is wrong. In this episode, we talk a lot about PCOS and Endo, and how to treat these conditions, how to recognize them, and how to push against the cultural taboos. I learned SO much in this episode, and to be honest, was quite surprised by how much I didn’t know.
Isabella’s IG account, @letstalkperiodau, is a great educational resource, especially for ex-religious folks. She also has her amazing podcast, Let’s Talk, Period, which is available on all streaming platforms! If you are looking for more education resources, you can also find her blog here, her website here, her mentoring information here, and her Tik Tok here!

TW: SA, purity culture, misogyny, sexual shame, mass shooting (time stamp: 24:00-27:40), high control religious abuse, queerphobia & homophobia
This week we have Blair (she/her) of @talkpuritytome on the podcast! Blair has been breaking barriers in the purity culture space for a while now, and was a major pillar of my own deconstruction.
In this episode, we are talking about YOUR purity culture experiences! A while back, I asked my IG audience to finish this statement: “Purity culture made me ______.” So this week, we are sifting through your experiences and breaking down the harm that purity culture has done.
Blair’s account (@talkpuritytome) is an amazing educational resource for folks deconstructing purity culture. You can also find Blair on Tik Tok and Twitter as well as IG!

TW: sexual assault, domestic violence, violence against pregnant persons
We are back, for the THIRD time, with my two favorite people, Moji Alawode-El & Marie Khan. These two are not only kickass abortion activists and educators, but they are also such amazing humans.
Moji Alawode-El (she/her) is the marketing manager at Abortion Access Front (@abortionfront) and one of the hosts of Feminist Buzzkills Live! Podcast. Marie Khan (she/her) is the Director of Programs at Midwest Access Coalition (@midwest_access_coalition).
In this episode, we go over the legislation that has bene introduced, the status of abortion pill access, the violence that has been committed, and the harm that has been done since Roe v Wade was overturned in 2022. If you are seeking a more comprehensive episode on abortion, check out episode 33 or episode 45 for a breakdown of when Roe fell.
Marie & Moji also talk about some next steps for folks who are seeking to support abortion access, care, and providers.
- PAY ATTENTION TO ELECTIONS! Please research your special and local elections. Voting for abortion access happens year round, not just in November.
- Support new abortion clinics and clinic expansions! Valley Abortion Group in New Mexico is new and needs your support!
- Show up and support your local abortion clinics!
- Don’t forget about mutual aid groups!
- Recognize your privilege and help support intersectional rights too!

TW: religious trauma & abuse, going no contact, abusive parental relationships, purity culture, child abuse, high control religious abuse, sexual assault, cult environments
This week we have Hannah Beck (she/her) on the podcast to talk all things no contact.
Hannah is a 22 year old recent college graduate who gained notoriety on TikTok in 2020 for fleeing an extremist religious group and going “no contact” with her abusive parents. She uses her platform to discuss how she navigates mental health issues, religion, being a college student, and queerness amidst overcoming many obstacles! You can find Hannah on Tik Tok and IG @Hannahaha424 !
Many of you have reached out to me about your journeys with going no contact and have asked for advice. I wanted to have Hannah on to answer some of those questions and help create a safe space to talk about these types of dynamics. If you are someone who has chosen to go no contact and are navigating that painful experience, you’re not alone and your needs are important. You deserve safety, acceptance, and self love.

TW: Overall really intense talk of sexual assault, sexual abuse, purity culture trauma, narcissistic abuse, spiritual abuse, child abuse, child mol3station, religious trauma, physical abuse via corporal punishment, sexism & misogyny, victim blame, SEVERE TW for episode 4 regarding the talk of Josh Duggar’s child p0rn case
Hi all - welcome to my review and breakdown of the Amazon Prime docu-series, “Shiny Happy People.” Shiny Happy People covers the fundamentalist Christian cult, IBLP, and how that cult harms folks. It centers primarily on the Duggar Family, known for TLC’s reality show: “19 Kids & Counting,” and how IBLP impacted their children.
In this episode, I focus primarily on how IBLP and fundamentalist Christianity as a WHOLE is intrinsically misogynistic, manipulative, abusive, and narcissistic. If you are a survivor of religious abuse, this episode may be triggering or emotional for you. Please take care of yourself and prioritize your mental well-being and healing.
Let’s dive in….

TW: religious trauma, high control religious environments, religious abuse, religious shame, spiritual abuse, cult environments, sexual assault, sexual abuse, rape, misogyny, patriarchal ethical issues within the church
This week we have an enlightening conversation with Katherine Spearing (she/her) of @uncertainpodcast and Tears of Eden. Tears of Eden “seeks to empower survivors to connect with their own agency to pursue the healing process from Spiritual Abuse. Tears facilitates connection to other survivors and provides language and resources to name the experience of Spiritual Abuse.”
We have spoken about religious trauma a TON but we have yet to dive deep into spiritual abuse. Katherine brought such an amazing perspective to the podcast in such an educated and thoughtful way.
If you want to check out Katherine’s work you can find Katherine online @katherinespearing and on her website. And if you want to follow Tears of Eden, you can find them online @uncertainpodast and on their website AND you can learn more about their in person retreat here.

TW: eating disorders (binging & restriction), ableism, self-harm & suicide (15:30-17:00), fatphobia & unrealistic beauty standards, brief mention of SA, body hatred, diet culture, orthorexia
This week on Mindful Minds we have Asher Seruya (they/she) of @badashtherapy on the podcast to talk all things ADHD + Eating Disorders. Asher is a psychotherapist, illustrator, and writer who specializes in unpacking eating disorder recovery, weight stigma, Jewish identity, and complex trauma. They brought such amazing insight on the intersection between ADHD & Eating Disorders, and how popular culture and the world’s approach to neurodivergence acts as a catalyst with disordered eating.
As someone recovering from an ED, this episode was so helpful and validating for me — and I hope it’s the same for you.
If you’d like to follow Asher and keep up with their work, which I would HIGHLY recommend, you can find her at @badashtherapy on IG and on their website for therapy services. You can also purchase art from their AMAZING Winter/Spring ’23 Collection here.

TW: perfectionism, mental health struggles, self-worth struggles/negative self-talk, eating disorders, fatphobia
Does anyone else identify as a recovering perfectionist? Because I sure do.
This week we have an affirming conversation with Dr. Menije (she/her) about perfectionism. Perfectionism is so rooted in our culture, and tends to be a common thread throughout a lot of mental health issues.
For me, with my background in religion, I feel that perfection is the root of so many of my anxieties and insecurities, and I’m sure many of you relate. In this episode, we cover the reality of what perfectionism is, how to approach it, and why it’s so pervasive.
If you want to learn from Dr. Menije and follow her work, you can find her on IG @dr.menije . You can also find her courses, blog, and free resources on her website!

TW: purity culture trauma, sexism/misogyny, rape/sexual assault/marital rape (53:30-1:03:45) & (1:07:30-1:20:00), abusive relationships, coercion, manipulation, controlling dynamics, abuse of power, church abuse, brief mention of suicide
Alright, we heard you! We received such an overwhelming ask for this topic and specifically, for us to bring back the AMAZING Sarah (she/her) of @deconstructingpurityculture to chat with us - so here we are! Buckle up for an almost 2 hour deep dive into part 2 of our purity culture.
If you haven’t listened to our first episode with Sarah, I would highly recommend it. We talk about all things purity culture from how it can lead to marital abuse to how the lack of consent education teaches adults not to have boundaries.
In this episode, we dive DEEP into how purity culture and evangelicalism leads to abusive relationships. We talk about how the lack of privacy and oversharing, the authoritarian nature of pastoral leadership, and the intense coercion within the church lead to abuse, assault, and authoritarian romantic relationships.
If you want to learn from Sarah and follow her wonderful content, which I would HIGHLY recommend, you can find her on IG @deconstructingpurityculture . You can also find more of her podcast appearances and more resources on her linktree.
Sarah also mentioned Reclamation Collective as a therapy resource for religious trauma! I also mention my religious trauma & mental health resources, which you can find here.

TW: rape, pro-life propoganda, racism & inequity towards BIPOC, medically assisted suicide, adoption trauma, white savioirism, Christian supremacy, religious trauma
Alright y'all, buckle up. This week we have the incredibly intellectual and insightful, Ellie Coburn (she/her), on for a MASSIVE convo about white saviorism, weaponized adoption, abortion access, and Christian supremacy. This is a pretty lengthy and incredibly important conversation.
For those of us who grew up in evangelical communities, we are all too familiar with the Christian supremacy and pro-life propaganda that is engrained in adoption conversations. Ellie is someone with personal experience as a foster care parent and adoptive parent, and she has wildly valuable opinions on the topic. If you grew up in mission culture and have been taught that you are meant to “save,” this is the conversation for you.
If you want to learn more from Ellie or connect with her, you can connect with her on Instagram @elliecoburn. She also wanted to share a few literary resources for you all!
- Torn Apart by Dorothy Roberts
- Shattered Bonds by Dorothy Roberts
- Jesus and John Wayne by Kristin Kobes Du Mez
Ellie also speaks about a phenomenal article from the Washington Post written by an adult Korean American adoptee, Cynthia Landesberg, centering on the harm that is done by using adoption as a solution to abortion.

TW: fatphobia, racism, eating disorders, systemic racism, verbal violence against brown & black fat bodies, religious trauma regarding fatphobia, dieting, food apartheid, ableism
Happy Black History Month friends! This month we have two amazing conversations covering intersectionality within the disabled activism community and the eating disorder community.
Last week, we had Iman (she/they) of @Disabled.BIPOC to chat about the importance of intersectionality within disabled activism, so if you missed that episode, go check it out!
But this week, we have the AMAZING Brianna Theus (she/her) of @thecelestialliferd on to have an intersectional conversation about eating disorders. This conversation is truly one of a kind, and was SO educational and insightful. Brianna is so eloquent and such a great teacher, and it was such a pleasure to learn from her.
In this episode, we unpack how food apartheid, religious upbringings, income disparity, and racism can impact one’s susceptibility to developing an ED or their ability to recover from one.
If you want to learn more from Brianna, and I would HIGHLY recommend it, you can find her on IG @thecelestialliferd and online here (thecelestiallife.com). If you want to work with Brianna, she has her own private practice, where she practices from an anti-diet and weight-inclusive lens. She is based in Connecticut and does take insurance here!
If you are struggling with an eating disorder and feel that you are not worth seeking help or are not sick enough to seek help, please know that you are worthy of help and recovery and your feelings and struggles are valid. You can seek help at the NEDA hotline (800) 931-2237 . You can also search for an ED therapist online at psychologytoday.com & inclusivetherapists.com .

Welcome to our last episode of Deconstruction January! If you are just joining us, welcome! This is the last episode of this themed month, but don’t worry, we will continue talking about deconstruction year round. I just wanted to dedicate some specific time to really unpack it. If you are looking for more constant deconstruction content, check out my Tik Tok, @fina__bina !
We spent the first half of January deep diving into mega churches, and now we’re diving into the other most requested topic: purity culture.
To have this conversation, we have the amazing Sarah (she/her) of @deconstructingpurityculture . Sarah and I come from really similar backgrounds and in this episode, we talk about all things purity culture from how it can lead to marital abuse to how the lack of consent education teaches adults not to have boundaries.
If you want to learn from Sarah and follow her wonderful content, which I would HIGHLY recommend, you can find her on IG @deconstructingpurityculture . You can also find more of her podcast appearances and more resources on her linktree.
We also quote Jessica Valenti, which I would also really recommend reading her work and her book, The Purity Myth.

TW: religious trauma, church trauma, peer pressured emotional trauma, coercion, manipulation, sexual abuse/assault, abuse of power, purity culture trauma, sexism, cult-like behaviors, miracles + healings trauma
Happy New Year all! I hope your 2022 was peaceful and mindful, and if it wasn’t, I hope you are able to find that in 2023. I wanted to welcome you to 2023 with a special 2 part series. I received a lot of feedback recently about deconstruction and religious trauma, and how so many of you wanted to talk about these topics. Specifically, after a megachurch series I posted on my Tik Tok, you all expressed a sincere interest in talking about the coercion and abusive nature of megachurches. So, let’s talk about it.
Yesterday I released part 1 of this mini-series, and if you haven’t listened to that episode, it gives some great context for this conversation. We chat about healing culture, the capitalism of Christianity, and the fabrication of supernatural occurrences.
In this episode, we dive into the beast that is megachurch & mega-pastor production including tours, conferences, and altar calls. We also go in quite a bit, on the similarities between charismatic Christianity and cults, including some conversation surrounding purity culture and blind obedience. And lastly, we talk about how blind obedience and respect for authority leads to a lack of true accountability and therefore leads to abuse and the misuse of power. We also talk a little bit about how the urge to forgive all and wipe one’s slate white as snow leads to a cycle of abuse.
