There's a new tool coming for police departments, and it it makes a lot of sense when you think about it.
SPEAKER_03Something that our tax dollars are paying for?
SPEAKER_01I would imagine so. At least this is happening in uh, let's see, a police department in Washington State. I could see this really taking off at a lot of police departments though. So, what other language besides English do you speak?
SPEAKER_03Pig Latin.
SPEAKER_01You're really proof at this point. You are. You're doing great.
SPEAKER_03Took four years of French, can't remember a dang thing except for uh Je t'em Fromage. I love cheese.
unknownPerfect.
SPEAKER_01So if you happen to pull over someone, say from Montreal that was speeding on 86, you would literally be able to say, I love cheese to them, and they'd be like, Me too. We know they would say we wee. Yes, yes. Okay, so language barriers can be a problem because not everyone, and I know certain jobs require bilingual, but not everybody does it. I I don't speak, I really don't speak another language.
SPEAKER_03Oh yes. Um I didn't think either one of us did. Sign language, I can do a little sign language, actually.
SPEAKER_01Okay, but that that's actually somewhat helpful. But there are police departments that, well, you're going to get involved with uh, you know, it could be as simple as a pulling over for going too fast of someone that doesn't speak the language, there's a barrier there, and you have to deal with it. So they now have new tech that will help officers communicate across language barriers. Here you go.
SPEAKER_02Language set to Spanish.
SPEAKER_00Hello, I'm Officer Vanderhoek with the Renton Police. How can I help you?
SPEAKER_02Oh my god.
SPEAKER_01I want to report my car is stolen. How quick was that? Now that's awesome. That's quick.
SPEAKER_03Do you think up to this point that somebody, let's say somebody is of Indian descent, Middle Eastern, right? Sure. Do you think or they could be Chinese, they could be whatever. Pick any language, Ukrainian, doesn't matter. Do you think that they fake not knowing the English language to get out of tickets?
SPEAKER_01Maybe. Uh-huh. But but then there are parts of the country where we have had a bigger influx of immigrants. Yeah. And they may not uh, you know, really know the the I mean they might know a couple words. We all know a couple words. We all know the dirty words. Yeah. Or how to get to a bathroom. Yeah. Usually. Uh maybe, you know. I mean, it's uh it's tough.
SPEAKER_03But I don't I can't remember the French word for speeding.
SPEAKER_01I couldn't either.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I can look it up.
SPEAKER_01I can tell you the German word for diarrhea, but that's all I can do for that.
SPEAKER_03Dump inducer? I don't know. I just made that up.
SPEAKER_01Dump inducer's awesome. No, it's it's dirk fallen. Oh yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. Like dump inducer way better.
