THE DECEITFUL HEART
Jeremiah 17:9-10 ---- “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?
We hear and read of romantic things that supposedly flow from our ‘hearts’. And as nice as that sounds, from that same ‘heart’ flow thoughts of hatred, revenge and bitterness! From the same ‘heart’ which the words I LOVE YOU ‘flow from’…also comes the words I HATE YOU SO MUCH! Now, IF you listen to my podcast you will hear me tell you that the only thing that ‘flows’ in and out of our human hearts is blood! None of those romantic and/or evil thoughts or actions come from our hearts! They all come from either our spiritual minds or are sinful flesh. In the Bible, the word ‘heart’ is metaphorical for the inner, invisible spiritual and fleshy part of our triune body. Which is all run by our minds. This inner, spiritual/fleshy invisible part of our body is where are feelings, logic and behaviors come from. Our physical hearts have nothing to do with ‘producing’ our spiritual and fleshly thoughts or emotions. All of our spiritual and/or fleshly thoughts, behaviors and emotions ‘flow’ from our minds…not our hearts!
So in the Bible, when the word heart is used it is referring to our inner spiritual and/or fleshly thoughts or feelings….which again all come from our minds! So with that said…do you know WHY Eve was lead astray? She listened to her heart (i.e. her feelings) instead of her brain as the serpent was talking to her? Do you know WHY Aaron got involved with idol worship? He listened to his feelings instead of His head when the rebellious Israelites started pressuring him!! Again, the Bible says that the human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Do you know what kept Moses from entering the Promised Land! His angry feelings! Moses definitely wasn’t using his brain when he chose to strike God! So, why did David molest Bathsheba? He ‘listened’ to a lust feeling that he was having. Take King Solomon. Supposedly the wisest man (besides Christ) who ever walked this planet totally fell apart biblically as he got older! And what happened to the great mind of the intellectually wise Solomon? He too ‘ignored’ what his brain was telling him…and allowed his love/lust feelings (for all his foreign wives) (that he should not have had in the first place) to totally ‘take him away from’ doing the righteous things of the Lord! Why was the Apostle Peter always sticking his spiritual foot in his mouth? After all, wasn’t it Peter’s sincere ‘heart’ that was telling him to say the things that he said to Yeshua? Well, Peter kept ‘failing’ spiritually because he was ‘thinking’ with his emotions and not his logical spiritual brains!
The Good and Gracious Lord told the Jews, “I set before you laws, commandments and teachings which either ‘lead to’ to life or death”! God then goes on to say, “Choose to ones that lead to life!” Sadly, IF you know your OT Scriptures…most Jews chose the commandments, laws and teachings that led to death! Now why would anyone…saved or otherwise…doing something as stupid as that? Well, it happened because they ‘listened to’ their fleshly feelings…and choose to do what felt good, or looked good, or ‘tasted good’ or even seemed good…instead of doing what they knew the Lord wanted them to do! Even what happened to Yeshua Christ happened because Jewish people…who should have known better…listened to their hearts (i.e. feelings) instead of their brains!
Again, for the millionth time…emotions can be a good thing…IF they are ‘kept in check’ with self-control and 'balanced out' with a faithful obedience to the Truths of Scriptures!
