Update on Asian Longhorned Tick in Iowa

By Codi Vallery-Mills Six herds in Iowa have confirmed Theileriosis – a disease being spread by the Asian Longhorned Tick. A protozoan parasite carried by the tick, Theileriosis, infects red and white blood cells and can cause anemia in cattle, which can lead to death. The disease is reportable but not actionable, says Iowa State Veterinarian Dr. Jeff Kaisand. This means vets that witness the disease must report it to the state Department of Agriculture, but no action (like the closing of state borders) will happen.
